Steelers signing offensive tackle Calvin Anderson

The Steelers addressed offensive line concerns by signing Calvin Anderson following Troy Fautanu’s injury.

After reports of Troy Fautanu’s knee injury came out, Steelers fans wondered what potential signing Pittsburgh would make to alleviate some of the damage to the offensive line depth.  While Broderick Jones bounced back in a big way in Week 3 from his benching in Week 2, depth on the offensive line is now a concern.  However, it has been confirmed that 28-year old offensive lineman Calvin Anderson was brought in for a workout, and subsequently signed with the Steelers on Monday.

The workout was likely to identify if Anderson was in good health, as the offensive tackle has struggled with injury concerns and serious health issues his 2023 season as a Patriot.

While it’s safe to say that the Steelers’ offensive line room will benefit greatly, it appears that Calvin Anderson is also excited to put his helmet and pads on for the black and gold.  Steelers nation will welcome the 4-year player with open arms, as the beginning of the 2024 season is shaping up to be a fantastic start.

Steelers signing former Broncos offensive tackle

The Steelers are signing former Broncos offensive tackle Calvin Anderson after losing Troy Fautanu to a knee injury.

The Pittsburgh Steelers are signing veteran offensive tackle Calvin Anderson, 28, after losing Troy Fautanu to a knee injury, according to a report from NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo.

Anderson (6-5, 305 pounds) entered the league as an undrafted free agent out of Texas with the New England Patriots in 2019. After being waived by the Patriots, Anderson was picked up by the New York Jets, who placed him on their practice squad to begin the 2019 season.

The Denver Broncos signed Anderson off the Jets’ practice squad to their active roster four games into the 2019 campaign. He went on to spend the next three seasons with the Broncos, serving as a backup swing tackle.

Anderson dressed for 41 games in Denver, earning 12 starts. After his contract expired with the Broncos in 2023, Anderson returned to the Patriots. He appeared in five games last fall, earning two starts. New England released him from injured reserve in August and Anderson will now get a fresh start in Pittsburgh.

After losing Mike McGlinchey to a knee injury, Denver brought in tackles Braeden Daniels and Cameron Fleming for workouts but did not sign either of them. Alex Palczewski started in the place of McGlinchey on Sunday and he played well, so the Broncos seem set at the position for now.

Recently released OL Calvin Anderson posts goodbye message to Patriots

Calvin Anderson bids farewell to New England

The New England Patriots released veteran offensive lineman Calvin Anderson from injured reserve last Friday. He took to X over the weekend to thank Patriots fans on social media.

Anderson signed a two-year contract with New England last March. He had a scary incident in the offseason as he had contracted malaria while doing philanthropic work in Nigeria. He was placed on injured reserve last November after suffering a heart contusion in practice.

Anderson was officially placed on injured reserve again in August, which would have ended his season.

The tackle played in 53 offensive snaps in the preseason, but he did not play in the preseason finale against the Washington Commanders.

“Thank you New England! I retain nothing but love and appreciation for the @Patriots, my teammates and the incredible fans for this chapter,” Anderson posted. “I genuinely wish I could’ve had more of an impact, but everything happens for a reason. I’ll always be a supporter.”

The offensive line has been a trouble spot for the Patriots in recent years. There was hope that Anderson could either contribute as a starter or add veteran depth to the roster.

The Patriots will now have to find that hope elsewhere on the team.

Patriots release veteran offensive lineman from injured reserve

Patriots announce release of veteran offensive lineman

New England Patriots veteran offensive tackle Calvin Anderson was released from injured reserve.

The team confirmed the news on Friday.

There was hope that Anderson could serve as a depth option or a possible starter for the Patriots along the offensive front. It has been a revolving door for the team at the tackle positions throughout training camp, and it always felt like an open competition.

Anderson had a near-fatal bout with malaria last year while doing philanthropic work in Nigeria. He then suffered a heart contusion in a practice session that ended in him going on injured reserve.

The 28-year-old offensive tackle was hoping this year would be different.

The injury release gives Anderson an opportunity to sign with another team when he’s ready to play.

Meanwhile, the Patriots will continue trying to solve their ongoing issues at tackle. Vederian Lowe, who has worked in at left tackle, has been banged up, and the team has been working Mike Onwenu in at right tackle and right guard.

It’s a mix-and-match session that hopefully leads to the team settling on something that works.

Patriots announce seven injury moves ahead of roster cut deadline

This is potentially good news for DT Christian Barmore

The New England Patriots made multiple injury transactions ahead of Tuesday’s 53-man roster deadline.

They placed wide receiver Kendrick Bourne, guard Cole Strange and linebacker Sione Takitaki on the reserve/physically unable to perform list. Defensive tackle Christian Barmore was placed on the reserve/non-football injury list.

Linebacker Marte Mapu, defensive tackle Armon Watts and offensive tackle Calvin Anderson were placed on injured reserve.

Barmore and Mapu are both designated for returns. So the Patriots defense could be getting a huge lift down the road with the two players potentially coming back.

This is a positive sign for Barmore in particular considering he’s out indefinitely after being diagnosed with blood clots. There is no clear timetable for his eventual return, but this latest designation leaves the door open for him to return this season.

That’s great news for a Patriots defense that heavily depends on his presence up front to win in the trenches.

Report: Patriots agree to renegotiated deal with OT Calvin Anderson

The Patriots and OT Calvin Anderson agreed to a renegotiated deal on Thursday

The New England Patriots and offensive tackle Calvin Anderson agreed to a renegotiated contract on Thursday, according to ESPN’s Field Yates.

Anderson’s deal will be reduced from $3.35 million in the process.

ESPN’s Mike Reiss projects Anderson to be in the mix for a swing tackle role, placing him fourth on the depth chart. This news comes after de facto general manager Eliot Wolf indicated Chukwuma Okorafor would be in line to be the team’s starting left tackle, if the season started today.

Anderson was signed as an unrestricted free agent by the Patriots in March 2023. He appeared in five games last season with two starts, adding depth to the Patriots’ line in the process. He played for the Denver Broncos prior to his time in New England.

The Patriots will have several decisions to make on the offensive side of the football, with the NFL draft quickly approaching. At the very least, this helps solidify the offensive line unit as a whole and brings back a player familiar with the organization.

Patriots coach Bill Belichick discusses offensive line injury woes

Bill Belichick commented on the offensive line struggles for the Patriots this season

The New England Patriots have had problems at the offensive line position, as injuries and inconsistent play have marred the unit throughout the year.

Patriots coach Bill Belichick offered his thoughts on how things have unfolded along the offensive front, when speaking with media members.

“That’s not the way we thought it would happen when we acquired some of the guys at the beginning of the year…but it is what it is,” said Belichick, via Patriots.com’s Evan Lazar.

The offensive line has been decimated by injuries. Calvin Anderson and Riley Reiff were free agent pickups, while Connor McDermott was re-signed this year as a free agent.

Injuries have made it difficult for the Patriots to build any form of consistency. At one point in the season, the Patriots’ entire offensive line was dealing with injuries.

This was simply a case of the Patriots rolling the dice and things not working out. It was something the usually-prepared Belichick could not foresee.

Patriots announce veteran offensive lineman being placed on injured reserve

Patriots offensive tackle Calvin Anderson has been placed on injured reserve.

The New England Patriots announced they have placed veteran offensive tackle Calvin Anderson on injured reserve. Anderson has not practiced the past couple days, and he was out of Friday’s practice with an illness.

He appeared in six games and started at right tackle for the first two games of the season. However, he hasn’t played recently, and he has been inactive for the past two games.

The offensive line has struggled from inconsistency this season. Getting every starter healthy at once has been a challenge on the unit, and New England has had to go with several different line combinations.

Anderson might no longer be the starter in New England, but he did help with the depth on the unit. So his absence is another hurdle the team will have to leap in a season plagued with injuries from the start.

Patriots injuries stacking up at key positions at Wednesday’s practice

The New England Patriots were missing several key players on Wednesday.

The New England Patriots were missing several key contributors at practice on Wednesday. Wide receiver DeVante Parker, offensive tackle Trent Brown, offensive tackle Calvin Anderson and tight end Pharaoh Brown were all missing, per NESN’s Zack Cox.

Parker left Sunday’s game against the Miami Dolphins with a head injury, and Trent Brown has been playing through multiple injuries, including knee and ankle issues.

Parker’s absence is notable in particular, and it could pave the way for more snaps for players like rookie wide receiver Kayshon Boutte. On top of that, Kendrick Bourne is out for the rest of the season with an ACL injury. Depth at wide receiver is becoming thin. So Parker’s absence will be worth monitoring in particular.

Trent Brown has also been one of the most productive players on the Patriots’ offensive line this season. He has been playing at a high level in recent weeks.

Meanwhile, Pharaoh Brown’s injury is notable, given that he has become a key cog in the New England offense. Brown caught two catches for 33 yards against the Miami Dolphins on Sunday.

New England’s season has been an uphill climb. These injuries will be worth monitoring, as they could potentially further complicate things for a 2-6 team that has already hit rock bottom eight games into the season.

Patriots stock watch: Who’s up, who’s down heading into Week 3?

Who’s stock is up and who’s stock is down for the Patriots?

The New England Patriots have a conundrum on their hands. They are an improved football team from last season, but they’re still sitting at 0-2 on the year ahead of Sunday’s meeting with the New York Jets.

A big reason for those struggles has been the hellacious regular season schedule. The Patriots faced two potential Super Bowl contenders right out of the gates in the Philadelphia Eagles and Miami Dolphins.

They still lack explosive offensive talent, but other players have stepped up on both sides of the ball to give them a chance to compete and stay in games. Today, we’re taking a look at several players and checking in on their stock with the team heading into the Week 3 matchup with the Jets.

Who’s stock is up and who’s stock is down for the Patriots?
