Cardinals could reunite with Ravens DL Calais Campbell

Could the Cardinals re-unite with one of their former icons in Calais Campbell?

There is one player remaining in the NFL from the Arizona Cardinals’ incredible Super Bowl run during the 2008 season, which feels like an eternity ago.

Calais Campbell, a rookie for that team led by Kurt Warner and Larry Fitzgerald, announced he will be returning for his 15th NFL season. He is set to be an unrestricted free agent.

Campbell was with the Cardinals until 2017, where he was not re-signed in free agency and went to Jacksonville, where he helped create the iconic ‘Sacksonville’ defense. He has since become a favorite amongst the Baltimore Ravens, his team the past two seasons.

Ravens general manager Eric DeCosta has spoke highly of Campbell, but with only a few days to go until free agents can negotiate with other teams, the Cardinals will likely be able to make their pitch.

The Cardinals have signed aging defensive lineman and pass rushers before. They did so with Dwight Freeney and Terrell Suggs, both of which were within a year of retirement. Campbell would be a fantastic addition for the locker room, run defense and for public relations. The fans in Glendale always loved Calais.

Two years ago, Campbell signed a two-year, $25 million dollar deal with the Ravens. It would be surprising if he inked the same annual salary this offseason, but his continued high-level play will net him a nice payday.

Rush defense, particularly during the second half of the season, was a crutch for the Cardinals. While Campbell certainly wouldn’t be a long-term solution, he is still a valuable rotational player and is worth double that as a leader.

In his career, Campbell has never played less than 12 games. He has steadily been available for each of his three teams, something the Cardinals would greatly benefit from. When healthy, however, a fully-loaded interior front would feature Campbell, J.J. Watt and Zach Allen. Perhaps the Cardinals would consider adding to that list in the first round of the draft. Keim has long sought his long-term answer at defensive tackle (most recently Derrick Brown in 2020) and having Campbell aboard would do wonders for a rookie.

Campbell is still a good player. He’s beloved by the community. He never wanted to leave the team in 2017, and would fit the model of a leader of men that the front office sought last offseason. What’s not to like?

The Cardinals should absolutely give Campbell a call.

Ravens announce Calais Campbell trade and one-year contract extension

The Baltimore Ravens make the trade for Calais Campbell official and announce a one-year contract extension as well.

As previously reported, the Baltimore Ravens pulled off a trade with the Jacksonville Jaguars for defensive end Calais Campbell. The Ravens finally announced the terms of the trade, noting the fifth-round pick they gave up for Campbell was the one they received from the Atlanta Falcons in return for tight end Hayden Hurst. Baltimore also announced a one-year extension for Campbell, which will keep him under contract with the Ravens through the 2021 season.

While the exact terms of Campbell’s contract extension weren’t revealed, Baltimore likely arranged it to give them a little more breathing room on their 2020 salary cap. Before extending Campbell, the Ravens had just $5.26 million available, $5,260,779.

Campbell will help Baltimore with their interior pass rush, hopefully freeing up outside linebacker Matthew Judon to get more pressures and sacks. Last season for the Jaguars, Campbell posted 6.5 sacks, 25 quarterback hits, 33 total quarterback pressures, and 10 tackles for a loss. Over the last four years, Campbell has accounted for 39.5 sacks and has found the end zone three times returning fumble recoveries.

Report: Ravens finalizing 2-year deal with Calais Campbell worth $27M

The Baltimore Ravens pulled off the trade for Jaguars DE Calais Campbell but now need to get his 2020 salary cap hit under control.

The Baltimore Ravens are set to trade with the Jacksonville Jaguars for defensive end Calais Campbell, helping patch up one of their biggest holes this offseason. Now they’re finalizing a new contract with Campbell to keep him in Baltimore.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Ravens are working on a deal that will pay Campbell $27 million over the next two seasons, with $20 million guaranteed. Though there is no formal breakdown of how that’s split out, it’s likely going to be a smaller cap hit than the $15 million Campbell is currently owed for the 2020 season, according to Over The Cap.

If the contract plays out exactly at those numbers, it would give Campbell an average of $13.5 million per year with $10 million a year guaranteed. That would tie him for 15th most in APY and tied for second-most in guaranteed money per year among defensive ends, according to OTC.

The Ravens likely wouldn’t have pulled the trigger on a trade with Campbell given his large 2020 cap hit unless they were confident they could get either a contract extension or new deal worked out. When combined with the nearly $16 million Baltimore is set to pay on the franchise tag for outside linebacker Matthew Judon, it would eat up most of the Ravens’ available salary-cap space for this season.

Getting Campbell on a more cap-friendly deal for the 2020 season would mean Baltimore can still be very active in free agency if they wish. Before trading for Campbell, the Ravens were set to have a little more than $19 million available for this season and with some potential cost-cutting moves still to make like extending Judon or cutting cornerback Brandon Carr before his roster bonus is due.
