Three Notre Dame Hockey Players Honored by Big Ten

It’s hard to remember now, but the Notre Dame hockey team’s season ended before sports were shut down.

It’s hard to remember now, but the Notre Dame hockey team’s season ended before sports were shut down. With everything going on, people surely forgot that Big Ten honors still had to be distributed. That finally happened Monday.

Junior defenseman Matt Hellickson and senior goaltender Cale Morris both were named Honorable Mention All-Stars. Senior forward and team captain Cal Burke became a Big Ten Sportsmanship Award honoree. A media voting panel and conference coaches selected the honorees.

Eleven of Rogers’ 16 points came on assists. He tied with Nick Leivermann for most goals on the team by a defenseman with five and had a team-leading three game-winning goals.

Morris ended his career with the top save percentage in program history (.931) and second all-time in wins (58) and goals-against average (2.18).

Burke won a Big Ten Sportsmanship Award for the second year in a row. He also was a finalist for the Senior CLASS and Hockey Humanitarian awards.

Notre Dame Hockey: Cal Burke Signs With Colorado Eagles

Just because sports aren’t going on doesn’t mean sports aren’t going on.

Just because sports aren’t going on doesn’t mean sports aren’t going on. Though not nearly as big a story as Tom Brady leaving New England, it’s worth mentioning that Cal Burke, a senior captain for Notre Dame this past year, has signed a standard player contract with the Colorado Eagles of the AHL for the 2020-21 season. And yes, they’re affiliated with the Colorado Avalanche for those ignorant of minor league hockey.

In his final season for the Irish, Burke recorded seven goals and 14 assists over 37 games. He was a finalist for the Hockey Humanitarian Award for the second straight year and also was one of 10 finalists for the Senior CLASS Award. The Business Analytics major will graduate from the Mendoza College of Business.

While helping the Irish get to the Frozen Four in 2017 and 2018 and win three straight Big Ten championships, Burke played 146 games and scored 88 points, 36 of them for goals.

Notre Dame Hockey: O’Leary Signs With Hartford

Notre Dame barely has finished skating for 2019-20, and already, someone on the past season’s team is getting a professional opportunity.

Notre Dame barely has finished skating for 2019-20, and already, someone on the past season’s team is getting a professional opportunity. Mike O’Leary has signed a contract with the Hartford Wolf Pack of the AHL. He will be joining fellow former Irish forward Steven Fogarty on the Wolf Pack’s roster.

O’Leary, who will graduate from the Mendoza College of Business in May with a Management Consulting degree, is coming off a season in which he recorded a career-high 23 points. He had a hot start to the season in October, sharing the national lead with Cal Burke in points (2.75) and assists (1.75) a game. He had multiple points in all four games the Irish played during that month, finishing it with 11 points and being involved with the game-winning goal in three of the four games.

O’Leary was a member of three Notre Dame teams that won three Big Ten titles. He finished his collegiate career with 57 points, including 20 goals, in 151 games.

Notre Dame Hockey: Irish Hope for Win Over Wolverines

After going 0-1-1 at home against Minnesota, Notre Dame will face a Michigan team that had a 9-2 scoring advantage in two wins over Michigan State last weekend. The two games between the Irish (12-12-6, 7-8-5-3) and Wolverines (15-12-3, 10-8-2-1) will take place Friday and Saturday in Ann Arbor. With the teams separated by seven points in the Big Ten standings and only two weekends of the regular season remaining, now is the time for these teams to make their moves.

These games likely won’t be determined by time spent in the penalty box. Notre Dame’s 7.4 penalty minutes a game are the fourth fewest in the country. Michigan isn’t far behind at sixth (8.2).

Much of Notre Dame’s season has hinged on the offensive success of Alex Steeves and Cal Burke. When Steeves notches a point, the Irish are 8-3-3. That record is 7-2-4 with Burke in the scoresheet. When Burke scores a goal, the Irish have a 6-1-0 record.

Cal Burke is a true ambassador not for Notre Dame, but all of college hockey. That fact is even more certain after the senior captain was named one of five finalists for this year’s Hockey Humanitarian Award on Wednesday. This is the second consecutive year in which Burke has been nominated for the award.

Burke’s involvement off the ice at Notre Dame includes the Fighting Irish Fight for Life program, the Rosenthal Leadership Academy and the Student Athlete Advisory Council, within which he serves on a mental health sub-group. He also helped develop and launch the Irish Strong Initiative.

All five nominees’ favorite charities will receive a donation from the award’s foundation The winner will be honored during a ceremony at the Frozen Four on April 10.

A struggling Notre Dame needed a spark against Wisconsin on Saturday, and it came from Alex Steeves. The sophomore forward scored a power-play goal to open the Irish’s scoring, then collected three assists for a career-high four points in a 5-2 win.

Notre Dame (11-4-4, 6-7-3-2) got back to .500 by going 3 for 7 on the power play. Aside from Steeves’ tally, Cal Burke got what proved to be the game-winning goal, and Michael Graham made it a 4-2 advantage midway through the third period. The special teams did allow a shorthanded goal to Roman Ahcan, but it merely was a footnote in the end. An even-strength goal from Charlie Raith, and an empty-netter from Tory Dello.

One night after not lasting to the end of the game, Cale Morris bounced back with a 35-save performance. Eight of those saves came in a first period in which neither team scored. Jack Berry had 32 saves for the Badgers.

Twenty NCAA men’s ice hockey student-athletes were named candidates for this year’s Senior CLASS Award. Two of them, Cal Burke and Cale Morris, represent Notre Dame.

The Senior CLASS Award is given annually to an NCAA Division I senior who has notable achievements in the following areas: competition, classroom, community and character.

The field of 20 candidates will be cut in half to 10 in February, and those 10 finalists will be on the official ballot. Fans, media and coaches all will have the opportunity to vote. The winner will be announced at the Frozen Four in April.

Burke, the Irish’s captain, has been very active in the community at-large and won the Compton Family Leadership in Service Award last year.

Morris, a rare goaltender who serves as alternate captain for the Irish, is involved along with the rest of the team in the Fight for Life program and also volunteers with the Indiana Youth Hockey League.

Both Morris and Burke earned Academic All-Big Ten honors in each of the past two years.

No. 14 Notre Dame suffered a surprising 3-0 defeat to Michigan on Friday despite allowing only 18 shots on goal. The Irish (10-8-3, 5-4-2-1) were unable to solve Strauss Mann, who stopped all 32 shots he faced, requiring the Wolverines (8-11-2, 3-7-1-0) to score only one goal for the win. That came when Nick Pastujov scored 18 seconds into a first-period power play. Nick Granowicz scored early in the third period, and Jacob Hayhurst added an empty-netter much later.

Notre Dame had three chances on the power play over the first and second periods but were unable to capitalize. Cale Morris, the reigning Big Ten First Star of the Week, made 15 out of a possible 17 saves.

The Irish’s best chances to score came on a wide-open attempt in the slot from Mike O’Leary and a net-front backhander from Cal Burke. However, Mann was able to prevent those and all other Notre Dame opportunities.

This two-game conference series in South Bend will conclude Sunday.
