UFC London, Cage Warriors 113 at risk with U.K. set to announce ban on public gatherings

UFC London and Cage Warriors 113 could be forced behind closed doors or postponed with the U.K. set to announce a ban on public gatherings.

Following today’s UFC on ESPN+ 28, the next two major events on the MMA calendar may both be forced into changes, with the U.K. government set to introduce new laws banning mass gatherings in a bid to curb the ongoing coronavirus outbreak.

UFC on ESPN+ 29 is scheduled to take place at London’s O2 Arena on Saturday, March 21, with Cage Warriors 113 due to take place at the arena’s smaller venue, indigo at The O2, the day before.

Both UFC president Dana White and Cage Warriors president Graham Boylan previously stated that their promotions’ respective events would go ahead as planned, but news emerging from the U.K. Saturday may force both organizations to change their plans.

So far the U.K. government, headed by Prime Minister Boris Johnson, has been an outlier in its approach to the coronavirus crisis. While other nations have issued bans on public gatherings, closed schools and – in the case of Italy – issued curfews, Johnson’s government has instead looked to minimize change, as they have moved their response level out of the “Contain” phase to the “Delay” phase, with citizens exhibiting symptoms told to self-isolate for seven days, regardless of whether they have traveled to affected areas.

However, the government’s stance on the issue has attracted widespread criticism from opposition parties and members of the public, who have questioned the country’s response as insufficient.

But that could soon be about to change, with a government source telling news agency Reuters that plans were being formulated to curb mass gatherings beginning next week.

“Ministers are working with the chief scientific adviser and chief medical officer on our plan to stop various types of public events, including mass gatherings, beginning next week,” the source said.

The English Premier League, the U.K.’s largest and most financially significant sports league, has suspended all matches until April 4, while the London Marathon, originally set for April 26, has been pushed back to Oct. 4.

The introduction of an official ban on mass gatherings could potentially impact a host of major U.K.-based events in the summer, including the Wimbledon tennis championships, the Grand National horse race, English soccer’s FA Cup final and the Glastonbury music festival. If introduced this week, the Cage Warriors and UFC events set for March 20 and 21 could potentially be among the first events affected.

With the fighters for both events likely to either already be in London, or en route from overseas, the promotions may decide to hold their events as behind-closed-doors shows. White had already hinted at that possibility during an appearance on ESPN’s SportsCenter, saying that, as things stood Friday, fans will still be admitted to the event, but if local authorities determined between now and fight time to close the event to fans, the company would comply.

Cage Warriors president Boylan, meanwhile, told MMA Junkie Thursday that the organization would be guided by the venue, saying, their approach would be “business as usual until we hear otherwise from the venue.”

Cage Warriors 113 lands third title fight as Jones, McColgan face off for vacant lightweight belt

After their respective opponents withdrew from the event, Mason Jones and Joe McColgan will now fight for the vacant lightweight title at Cage Warriors 11.

Cage Warriors lightweight contenders [autotag]Nathan Jones[/autotag] and [autotag]Joe McColgan[/autotag] had hoped to emerge victorious from their respective fights at Cage Warriors 113 and earn themselves a shot at the lightweight title. Now the pair will face off with the vacant title up for grabs.

Wales’ Jones (8-0) was set to face Danilo Belluardo, while Northern Ireland’s McColgan (6-2-1) was scheduled to take on Rafael Macedo, but after both opponents withdrew from the event through injury, Cage Warriors president Graham Boylan matched the two contenders head to head, with the promotion’s vacant 155-pound title on the line.

McColgan has lost just once in his last six fights for the promotion – to new UFC signing and former 155-pound champ Jai Herbert – with two first-round submission finishes sandwiching a draw with Mehdi Ben Lakhdar that was awarded Cage Warriors’ 2019 Fight of the Year.

Jones, meanwhile, is undefeated and heads into the event after picking up notable wins against Belgian contender Donovan Desmae and Finnish veteran Aleksi Mantykivi.

The pair now will face off for the coveted title, which has been held by the likes of Conor McGregor, Stevie Ray, Chris Fishgold and Herbert, who all subsequently went on to sign for the UFC.

The event is all set to continue in its original form, with paying fans set to be admitted to the Indigo at The O2 on fight night. MMA Junkie reached out to Boylan for an official update, with the Cage Warriors president saying their promotion’s approach is “business as usual until we hear otherwise from the venue.”

Paddy Pimblett gets third new opponent for Cage Warriors 113 as Decky Dalton steps in

Coronavirus concerns in Italy meant Paddy Pimblett’s original (second) opponent, Davide Martinez, could not travel to London.

Former Cage Warriors featherweight champion [autotag]Paddy Pimblett[/autotag] now has a third new opponent for the promotion’s return to London.

Pimblett (14-3) was originally booked to face Belgian contender Donovan Desmae on the upcoming Cage Warriors 113 card on March 20, but injury to the Belgian contender forced the promotion’s matchmaker, Ian Dean, to find a replacement, with Italian Davide Martinez drafted in to face “The Baddy.”

However, with the ongoing coronavirus crisis hitting Italy particularly hard in recent weeks, travel restrictions meant Martinez was unable to fulfill his booking at the Indigo at The O2, as Dean hit the phones again to find a third opponent for Pimblett.

Now the promotion has confirmed its search was successful, with [autotag]Decky Dalton[/autotag] agreeing to step in on nine days’ notice for the matchup, which takes place the day before the UFC’s return to London in the main O2 Arena on March 21.

Dalton (10-4), a 10-year veteran fighting out of Belfast, Northern Ireland, picked up a victory and the Cage Conflict featherweight title with a first-round standing arm-triangle choke this past Saturday. Now “The Diamond” will make an instant turnaround to face Pimblett in London.

Paddy Pimblett gets new opponent for Cage Warriors 113 as Davide Martinez steps in

Former Cage Warriors featherweight champion Paddy Pimblett has a new opponent for Cage Warriors 113 in London.

Former Cage Warriors featherweight champion [autotag]Paddy Pimblett[/autotag] has a new opponent for Cage Warriors 113.

“The Baddy” was all set to face fellow lightweight contender Donovan Desmae on Mar. 20 at the Indigo at The O2 in London. Now he will take on in-form Italian prospect [autotag]Davide Martinez[/autotag], who has stepped in on just over a month’s notice to face the Liverpudlian fan-favorite. The event will be streamed live on UFC Fight Pass.

Pimblett (14-3) has seen his last two scheduled bouts fall through, with Joe Giannetti failing to make weight at Cage Warriors 111 and Desmae withdrawing from the upcoming Cage Warriors 113 event due to personal reasons.

But Pimblett will remain on the card and face promotional debutant Martinez (8-2) at the showcase event, which is set to take place the night before UFC on ESPN+ 27 in London. Martinez heads to England riding a six-fight win streak, and “Ispanico” is looking to score a big-name scalp on his Cage Warriors debut.

Pimblett, who hasn’t fought since September 2018, said he’s grateful to his new opponent for stepping in to keep his fight on the card.

“I hope he’s ready for a scrap come fight night, because I’m coming to make a statement,” he said.

“I’m happy to have a new opponent to focus on, and want to thank Davide for taking the fight as he’s the only person to actually want to fight me. Everyone else talks the talk but doesn’t walk the walk.”

The event will feature a fight for the interim featherweight title, with rising French star Morgan Charriere set to face an opponent to be named in due course, while his fellow countryman, Samir Faiddine, will put his flyweight title on the line for the first time against Englishman Luke Shanks.

Cage Warriors 113: French contender Morgan Charriere lands interim title shot in London

Morgan Charriere will get his first shot at gold when he competes for the interim featherweight title at Cage Warriors 113 in London.

[autotag]Morgan Charriere[/autotag], one of the best rising talents to come out of France, will get his first shot at a significant title when he returns to action at Cage Warriors 113 in London.

Current 145-pound champion Mads Burnell originally was set to compete in London. But with the Dane unable to fight, Cage Warriors officials have booked top contender Charriere (15-7-1) in an interim featherweight title bout at the Indigo at The O2 on March 20. His opponent is still to be announced.

Charriere has impressed with a string of eye-catching performances, but none garnered more attention than his knockout of former featherweight champion Dean Trueman at Cage Warriors 109.

That victory won him the fan-voted Cage Warriors “Knockout of the Year” award with 96.1 percent of the 41,000 votes cast, and cemented his position as the top contender in Cage Warriors’ featherweight division. Now the 24-year-old will challenge for gold in London.

Charriere’s addition to the London event gives the top of the fight card a distinctly French flavor with fellow countryman and Cage Warriors flyweight champion Samir Faiddine set to make the first defense of his title against Luke Shanks in the main event.

The card, which will be streamed on UFC Fight Pass, also features Liverpudlian fan favorite Paddy Pimblett, undefeated Welsh lightweight contender Mason Jones and rising Irish prospect Ian Garry.

Cage Warriors 113 lineup builds with UFC vet Danilo Belluardo vs. Mason Jones

The lineup for Cage Warriors’ March return to its home stomping ground of London continues to grow with the addition of several new fights, including one with a UFC veteran.

Nathan Jones

Jones was the Cage Warriors “Fight of the Year” in voting done by the promotion’s fans in 2019. The 24-year-old Welshman went 2-0 in 2019 with decision wins over Donovan Desmae and Aleksi Mantykivi. In 2018, he went 4-0 with three wins by stoppage.

Italy’s Belluardo will be Jones’ most experienced opponent yet. After a six-fight winning streak, he signed with the UFC in 2019. But he lost both his fights with the promotion by TKO to Joel Alvarez and Mark Madsen. Now he’ll try to snap his skid in his Cage Warriors debut.
