A former Nebraska baseball player earned his first win on the MLB level Saturday night. Cade Povich took the mound for the Baltimore Orioles against the Texas Rangers in his fifth start of the season and snatched his first career win after throwing for 5.0 innings.

Baltimore hung on to win in a 6-5 battle, cranking out four runs after Povich finished his night on the mound. Through his 5.0 innings, Povich threw 86 total pitches on the night and delivered a solid outing in his first career win.

Povich delivered three total strikeouts on the night and surrendered five hits and two home runs, giving Texas a 2-1 lead heading into the bottom of the fifth. The first home run occurred on Povich’s seventh pitch but threw lights out until the fifth when he coughed up the second home run.

On the season, Povich now stands with a 1-2 record through five games and 26.2 innings. He currently holds an ERA of 4.05 and 17 total strikeouts.

The Nebraska baseball team experienced a wild Monday night in Major League Baseball, with three former Huskers taking the mound for their respective teams. Matt Waldron, Cade Povich and Spencer Schwellenbach all earned a start on Monday evening.

Matt Waldron led the way on the night in his 16th start this season, pitching 6.0 innings for the San Diego Padres against the Washington Nationals. He finished the night with eight strikeouts while allowing five hits and two runs off 107 pitches.

On the season, Waldron has 84 strikeouts across 89.1 innings and has an ERA of 3.43. He received a no-decision in the Padres win.

Cade Povich started his fourth game for the Baltimore Orioles this season, facing off against the Cleveland Guardians on a late afternoon Monday. Povich pitched 5.2 innings and threw five strikeouts while allowing seven hits and three runs off 92 pitches.

On the season, he’s pitched 21.2 innings, thrown 14 strikeouts, and has an ERA of 4.15. Povich currently has a record of 0-2.

Spencer Schwellenbach earned his fifth start of the season and his second against the Washington Nationals. He pitched 5.0 innings for the Atlanta Braves and threw six strikeouts but allowed eight hits and four runs off 86 pitches.

On the season, Schwellenbach now holds a record of 1-3 on the season. He has thrown 25 strikeouts and has a 5.40 ERA across 26.2 innings.

Povich stepped to the mound first, pitching for the Orioles in his second career start. Schwellenbach, meanwhile, earned his third career start for the Braves on the night. Both pitched for 6.0 innings.

Baltimore ended the night with the win, taking down Atlanta 4-2 thanks to Povich’s outing. Povich threw 89 total pitches on the night, 63 strikes, and tallied six strikeouts while surrendering five hits and no runs. Schwellenbach also threw 89 pitches, 62 of them strikes. He threw three strikeouts and coughed up four hits, two runs, and two walks.

Povich has eight strikeouts through two games, 11.1 innings, and 189 pitches. Schwellenbach, now through three games, 262 pitches, and 15.2 innings, has thrown 12 strikeouts.

A former Husker pitcher took the mound on Thursday afternoon in his MLB debut. Cade Povich started for the Baltimore Orioles in their showdown against Toronto Blue Jays.

Povich made his start following three seasons in the Minor League after being drafted by the Minnesota Twins in 2021. Minnesota traded Povich to Baltimore in 2022.

The Bellevue, Nebraska native has put up impressive numbers this spring at Triple-A Norfolk, posting a 5-1 record in 11 starts with a 3.18 ERA and 75 strikeouts in 56.2 innings.

Povich pitched through 5.1 innings and faced 25 batters in his start for Baltimore and finished the day throwing two strikeouts. He surrendered five hits, four walks, and six runs. Povich shut out the Blue Jays through the first two innings before Vladimir Guerrero Jr. hit a three-run home run in the third.

Povich surrendered one run in the fourth before shutting out Toronto in the fifth. However, he coughed up two more runs in the sixth, increasing the Blue Jays’ score to 6-1. Baltimore scored four runs across the final two innings but came up short with a 6-5 loss.

He is the 41st Nebraska baseball player to reach the Major Leagues and the third this season. Spencer Schwellenbach and Trenton Brooks both debuted in late May.

A former Nebraska baseball player made his AAA debut last week. Pitch Cade Povich made his debut for the Norfolk Tides of the International League on Friday night.

Povich had a rough outing as he only threw 2.1 innings while surrendering four runs. Norfolk is the AAA affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles.

Povich pitched at Nebraska during the 2020 and 2021 seasons and was a first-team All-Big Ten in 2021. He would post a record of 6-1 with an ERA of 3.11 in 81 innings.

He was taken in the third round of the 2021 MLB draft by the Minnesota Twins. Povich was traded to Baltimore in the 2022 trade for Jorge Lopez.
