The Clemson Insider has the latest on a running back in the 2022 recruiting class, who received a highly-anticipated offer from Clemson on Thursday night.

Parish Episcopal School (Dallas, TX.) three-star RB Andrew Paul announced the offer from the Tigers on social media late Thursday.

We spoke with his head coach, Daniel Novakov, to get the latest on Paul’s recruitment after receiving the offer that he had been waiting for.

“I think Clemson is one of those premier programs,” Novakov told TCI.” Anytime you get an offer from a place like that, I think it kind of legitimizes you as a star amongst stars. I think it’s one of those top-notch programs that all kids aspire to be recruited by.”’

Novakov was able to connect with Clemson running backs coach C.J. Spiller, who told Paul’s head coach that they were going to be offering the talented back.

Obviously, Clemson didn’t need to do that, but Novakov appreciated the Tigers’ “old school” way of doing business.

Of course, he had a chance to speak with Paul after the offer came in.

“Oh man, I think he’s super excited,” Novakov said. “From talking to him and just from how his texts came across, it seems like he’s super, super excited.”

Paul will be officially visiting Clemson the weekend of Jan. 22 and also plans to take an official visit to the University of Michigan. He’s taken one official thus far and that was to the University of Colorado.

Since the start of the month of November, Paul has seen his recruitment take off. He’s earned offers from Cal, Michigan State, Auburn, Houston, Purdue, SMU, Washington State, TCU, Michigan and most recently the University of Notre Dame.

With National Signing Day less than a month out, Paul’s weighing his options as he looks to find his next home. It’s pretty clear that his coveted Clemson offer holds some weight.

The latest on 2022 Lone Star State RB target

The Clemson Insider caught up with the head coach of a running back in the 2022 recruiting class that Clemson has expressed interest in, as a possible fallback plan for Trevor Etienne.

Clemson has been mentioning Andrew Paul, a three-star running back out of Dallas’ Parish Episcopal School.

“What they told us is they have a lot of interest in him, but they haven’t offered him because of [Travis] Etienne’s little brother,” Paul’s head coach, Daniel Novakov, told TCI. “I’m not sure how many backs they’re taking in this class, but I know they’re definitely interested. [C.J.] Spiller was at the game and then I’ve been talking with [Brandon] Streeter too. I’ve heard from both of them, I don’t know where they stand with it, but that’s my understanding of it.”

Clemson was in attendance for one of Paul’s playoff games earlier last month. Novakov assumes that signifies they’re pretty interested. Streeter, Clemson’s newly-minted offensive coordinator, followed that up by saying that they were definitely interested in Paul and that they’re still in the market for him, Novakov said.

Novakov is unsure of whether Paul plans to take an official visit to Clemson. He doesn’t think Paul has figured out where he’s going. He’s taken an OV to Colorado, so he has four remaining and there are only three weekends remaining before the signing period.

Since the start of the month of November, Paul has seen his recruitment take off. He’s earned offers from Cal, Michigan State, Auburn, Houston, Purdue, SMU, Washington State, TCU and the University of Michigan.

“A lot of kids get frustrated because they feel like they should have certain offers at certain times,” Novakov said. “Instead of him worrying about that, he just went to work.”

“He was definitely really good last year,” Novakov added. “He was an all-state running back last year. So, it’s not like he came out of nowhere. I just think he worked really hard and then also, he got a lot of confidence his senior year and became the man. He definitely worked his butt off. The improvement I saw from junior to senior year — I mean he was really, really good as a junior — but the improvement I saw, you very rarely see that and I think it was a testament to what he was able to do in the weight room and also working outside with his trainer.”

This past season, Paul put together an otherworldly performance that left his head coach imagining if this was what it was like to watch Bo Jackson in high school.

“For a single season, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a more dominant performance by one player at a single position than what he was able to do last year and it was really the last eight games, to be honest with you too,” Novakov said. “It was really pronounced.”

Paul rushed for 2,612 yards and added 41 touchdowns as a senior at the Parish Episcopal School.

“It makes life pretty easy when you know you got somebody like that you can rely on when you need to,” he said. “When everything’s not going right, you just hand him the ball and he’s gonna make everything go right. Certainly makes it a lot more comfortable when you’re game planning, knowing that you got him back there.”

Paul kind of reminds Novakov of former Notre Dame running back Ricky Waters. He has that same slashing ability. Paul is big, but he’s not just a big power back. He can run away from people, he can make you miss, he can catch the ball out of the backfield.

The unique thing about Paul is his size and how he’s very versatile. Novakov said that he’s heard people compare him to Adrian Peterson because Paul’s that same type of slasher, who can run away from you and not just three yards a cloud of dust.

Clemson remains pretty interested in the fast-rising running back prospect, but Etienne, obviously, remains a priority target for the Tigers in this recruiting class.

“I just want him to go somewhere where he’s gonna be happy,” Novakov said. “That’s all I care about…I just want him to go somewhere where he’s gonna get to play, run the ball and be happy.”

Update after Clemson’s latest visit to Arch Manning’s school

As The Clemson Insider reported on Wednesday night, Clemson quarterbacks coach Brandon Streeter and running backs coach C.J. Spiller were set to visit Isidore Newman High School (New Orleans) – the home of five-star quarterback Arch Manning – at 7:30 a.m. Thursday.

Streeter and Spiller couldn’t talk to Manning directly at the school due to NCAA rules, but they had a great visit with Manning’s head coach at Isidore Newman, Nelson Stewart, on Thursday morning.

It was Clemson’s second visit to Isidore Newman in as many weeks, as Streeter also traveled to the school last week to check on Manning, but Thursday marked Stewart’s first time meeting Spiller.

“One of my favorite college players ever,” Stewart told The Clemson Insider. “Always love seeing coach Streeter. Sat and got a chance to talk for an hour or so about football, bowl game, and rehashed some recruiting stories. Great guys!”

Streeter and Spiller conveyed confidence to Stewart in the plan that Dabo Swinney has for his coaching staff moving forward.

“They were just very confident that Dabo always has a plan,” Stewart said. “They were excited about the future.”

Manning camped at Clemson this past June and returned to campus for the Florida State game on Oct. 30.

When might Manning make it back to Tiger Town?

“They hope January but (we) will see,” Stewart said. “He’s in basketball (season) right now.”

Clemson extended an offer to Manning — the nation’s No. 1 overall prospect in the 2023 recruiting class — this past June when Arch was on campus for the Swinney Camp.

After Clemson legend C.J. Spiller was formally inducted into the 2021 College Football Hall of Fame Class on Tuesday night in Las Vegas, another Clemson legend – Travis Etienne – showed love and gratitude to Spiller in a Twitter post on Wednesday.

Before being named Clemson’s running backs coach on Feb. 5, 2021, Spiller served as an unpaid coaching intern for the Tigers during the 2020 season and had a front-row seat to watch Etienne’s final year at Clemson, when Etienne became the ACC’s all-time leading rusher and the NCAA FBS record holder for most career games scoring a touchdown (46 of his 55 career games).

Spiller, who still holds ACC single-season and career records for all-purpose yards (posting 2,680 in 2009 and finishing his career with 7,588), became Clemson’s eighth inductee in the College Football Hall of Fame. He joined four coaches (John Heisman, Jess Neely, Frank Howard and Danny Ford) and three players (Banks McFadden, Terry Kinard and Jeff Davis).

Clemson is set to visit the school of five-star quarterback Arch Manning for the second time in as many weeks.

On Tuesday of last week, Clemson quarterbacks coach Brandon Streeter stopped by Isidore Newman High School in New Orleans to check on Manning, the nation’s No. 1 prospect in the 2023 class regardless of position.

The Clemson Insider has learned that Streeter will be back at Isidore Newman on Thursday, and this time, he will be accompanied by running backs coach C.J. Spiller. They are scheduled to meet with Manning’s head coach, Nelson Stewart, at 7:30 a.m., per Stewart.

Manning isn’t allowed to speak with college coaches directly at his school due to NCAA rules, but Streeter had a great visit last week with Stewart.

Manning visited Clemson to participate in the Dabo Swinney Camp this past June and returned to Tiger Town for the Florida State game on Oct. 30. Clemson hopes to get him back on campus after the season is over so he can take an even deeper dive into the Tigers’ program and see what they are all about.

Clemson extended an offer to Manning — the son of Cooper Manning, grandson of former Ole Miss and Saints quarterback Archie Manning and nephew of NFL greats Peyton and Eli Manning — this past June when Arch was on campus for the Swinney Camp.

Gesture from one of Spiller’s players meant the world to him this week

Clemson legend and current Tigers running backs coach C.J. Spiller was honored in Las Vegas on Tuesday night for his induction into the College Football Hall of Fame.

In an interview with the National Football Foundation, Spiller was asked about being a coach now and what it’s like to be on a coaching staff, trying to teach his players what he was taught when he was a player.

“It’s different,” Spiller said. “But it’s a tremendous honor that I take great pride into because you’re having an opportunity to have an impact on a young man’s life and kind of shape him into the young man that he can go off and be successful – not only in the game of football, but give him the tools that he’ll need for life itself. So, that’s the thing that I really enjoy.”

Spiller — one of the most decorated and beloved players in Clemson history from his four-year career as a running back for the Tigers from 2006-09, who went on to have an eight-year NFL career (2010-17) after being the ninth overall selection in the 2010 NFL Draft by the Buffalo Bills — shared a nice story about a text he received from Clemson freshman running back Will Shipley to congratulate him on his College Football Hall of Fame induction.

“I was actually texting Will Shipley last night, and he was texting and congratulating me,” Spiller said. “You never really know how your players really perceive you until they tell you. So, for him to send that text last night, it meant a lot to me.”

Spiller became Clemson’s eighth inductee in the College Football Hall of Fame, joining four coaches (John Heisman, Jess Neely, Frank Howard and Danny Ford) and three players (Banks McFadden, Terry Kinard and Jeff Davis). At the time of his selection, Spiller became one of only 1,038 players and 223 coaches have been immortalized in the Hall, putting him in the top 0.02 percent of those who have played or coached the sport.

Spiller’s historic college career culminated with a senior season in 2009 in which he finished sixth in Heisman Trophy voting after winning ACC Player of the Year and being selected as a unanimous first-team All-American. He became the first player in the history of the Walter Camp All-America team to be first or second-team All-American at two positions in the same year.

Clemson offer would be ‘dream come true’ for versatile athlete with connection to Spiller

The Clemson Insider recently caught up with this versatile class of 2023 prospect with a longstanding connection to Tigers running backs coach C.J. Spiller.

Spiller and Bradford High School (Starke, Fla.) athlete Manny Covey are practically family, even though they aren’t biologically related.

Covey is adopted and has been with his family since he was about 4 years old, according to his father, Rich, whose oldest adopted son is first cousins with Spiller.

Spiller has called Manny his “little cuz” ever since they can remember, and the two have developed a special relationship over time.

“At the end of the day, he is family more than anything,” Manny told The Clemson Insider recently.

Manny and his family lived in Anderson County from 2009-16 before moving back to Florida, and Rich has attended the Dabo Swinney Football Camps with his sons on plenty of occasions over the years, dating all the way back to Swinney’s first year as the Tigers’ head coach.

When Manny participated in the Swinney Camp this past summer, he worked out for and was coached by wide receivers coach Tyler Grisham. The do-it-all athlete, who also plays baseball, sees action at running back, slot receiver, kick returner and punt returner on the gridiron. As a junior this season, Manny totaled more than 1,100 all-purpose yards and 12 touchdowns.

Grisham and the Tigers are looking at the 5-foot-11, 175-pounder as a slot receiver.

“He likes how explosive and shifty I am,” Manny said of Grisham.

Manny returned to Clemson during this season as an unofficial visitor for the Tigers’ game against Florida State on Oct. 30.

“I loved it,” he said. “The atmosphere, the fans. I liked Tiger Walk, that was pretty cool. What stood out to me the most was the fans and how they support their team, especially during Tiger Walk, and how they were cheering them on before the game even started.”

While on campus for the game-day visit, Manny had the chance to speak with several coaches, including offensive player development coach Tajh Boyd, Grisham and of course Spiller.

“It was good,” Manny said of catching up with Spiller during the visit. “We just talked about family and the game I had that Friday.”

Manny has also visited North Carolina and UCF this season. In addition to Clemson, the Tar Heels have been showing substantial interest, along with schools such as Iowa State, Memphis, Georgia State and Temple among others.

An offer from the Tigers in the future, Manny said, would be “a dream come true.”

“It would be awesome to get an offer from Clemson,” he said, “or to even play for Clemson.”

What stands out the most to Manny about Clemson?

“The graduation of players from the program, winning tradition and feeling of family,” he said.

College football’s highest honor ‘pinnacle of everything’ for Spiller

C.J. Spiller has officially reached college football’s peak.

Before he was Clemson’s running backs coach, Spiller excelled at the position during his playing days at the Tigers. Throw in his special teams wizardry, and Spiller was one of the best the sport has ever seen with the ball in his hands.

With his induction into the College Football Hall of Fame, he’s officially recognized as such. Spiller will be enshrined with the rest of the 2020 and 2021 classes during the National Football Foundation Annual Awards Dinner late Tuesday in Las Vegas.

Spiller is one of 13 former players and coaches who are part of the 2021 class. Other notable class members include Tony Romo (Eastern Illinois quarterback), Carson Palmer (Southern Cal Heisman-winning quarterback), Dan Morgan (Miami linebacker), Darren Sproles (Kansas State running back) and Bob Stoops (former Oklahoma coach).

“I think this is at the pinnacle of everything,” Spiller said before the event. “I think everything I set out to do at a young age when I started playing the game of football, this would be right at the top.”

Spiller, who got the nod in just his second year of eligibility, is the eighth inductee in the history of Clemson’s program and the fourth player to earn the distinction. A former blue-chip recruit, he began his collegiate career in 2006 after being recruited out of Lake Butler, Florida, by his position coach turned boss, Dabo Swinney.

The rest is history.

A 5-foot-11, 200-pounder with track speed to boot, Spiller became one of college football’s most dynamic players during his four seasons with the Tigers. He piled up 7,588 career all-purpose yards – still the third-most in FBS history – and returned seven kickoffs for touchdowns, an NCAA record.

His senior season in 2009 was his best. Spiller rushed for 1,212 yards, had 503 yards receiving and returned five kicks (four kickoffs, one punt) for scores, accounting for more than 2,600 all-purpose yards and 22 touchdowns that season. The ACC Player of the Year and a unanimous first-team All-American, he also finished sixth in the Heisman Trophy voting.

Spiller was then taken ninth overall by the Buffalo Bills in the 2010 NFL Draft. He played for five teams over eight NFL seasons before eventually returning to coach at Clemson, where he’s in his second season on Swinney’s staff.

But none of his players will ever wear No. 28 while donning the orange and purple. Spiller’s jersey number has been retired.

“When I was young, I wrote down all of my goals of what I wanted to accomplish as a player going from high school to college into the pros,” Spiller said. “The thing I always wrote down was I always wanted to be known as one of the best to leave each stop I had along the way. And now, to be considered one of the best at Clemson, it means a lot not only to me but my family, my teammates and my university.”

As for why he ultimately decided to play for what were Tommy Bowden’s Tigers at the time when he had his pick of the college litter – beyond wanting to go somewhere that reminded him of his small hometown in Florida – Spiller said it was the people that sold him on Clemson.

“It was the only visit I went on where I called back home and told my mom that I think I could come for three or four years,” Spiller said. “And I had been to some very prestigious institutions on my official visits, but it was something different when I got up to Clemson that made me make that phone call back home and tell her that. And when I got there, they lived up to it.”
