Everything Coach Buzz Williams had to say after 57-44 win over Wake Forest

Here’s everything head coach Buzz Williams had to say ahead of Texas A&M basketball’s home win over Wake Forest

Texas A&M gets another quality win over a game Wake Forest team. After a first half marred with turnovers, the Aggies cleaned up their game and found a way to come out victorious at Reed Arena.

The hallmark of the Aggie team is their defense and intensity throughout the game. Although their scoring has seen better days, even while shooting around 40%, they are winning quality games. On top of playing lights-out defense, they are grabbing many rebounds and getting to the free-throw line. Their experience and aggressiveness have played a major role in Tuesday’s win

“We had to have a lot of endurance just to hang around. We only fouled them six percent of the time. That’s the lowest number we’ve ever had. We were getting stops without fouling.”

Below, you can watch the entire post-game conference.

Texas A&M will go on the road to Fort Worth, TX to face Texas Tech at Dickies Arena at 2:00 pm CST on Dec. 8. The game can be watched on ESPN2.

Instant reaction to Texas A&M basketball’s 57-44 win over Wake Forest

Texas A&M pulls away late to move to 7-2 on the season after beating Wake Forest at Reed Arena

Texas A&M (7-2) came on strong in the second half to beat Wake Forest (7-3) in the SEC/ACC Challenge at Reed Arena.

The best way to describe this game is “out of sync.” Neither team performed well in the first half, with the Aggies committing an unacceptable 14 turnovers. Wake Forest struggled to execute their offensive plays, resulting in a shooting percentage of less than 30%. Fortunately for Texas A&M, their strong defense allowed them to take a narrow 29-26 lead into the locker room.

A&M intensified its defense in the second half, limiting Wake Forest to just 18 points. While the Aggies didn’t significantly improve their shooting, Andersson Garcia and Henry Coleman played crucial roles in gradually expanding their lead as the half progressed. Garcia recorded 16 rebounds and contributed five points, while Coleman added 10 points to the team’s efforts.

At this point, we know who this Aggie team is until they show us something different. It’s a team that will sub 40% shooting team that plays relentless defense, and grabs every offensive rebound in sight. Coach Buzz Williams can’t shoot the ball for his guys but before it gets too late, they need to find a way to capitalize on playmakers on the team.

Instant reaction to Texas A&M basketball’s 80-77 win over Rutgers

Texas A&M holds off Rutgers to take fifth place in the Players Era Festival Tournament

Saturday afternoon, No. 20 Texas A&M Aggies (6-2) defeated the Rutgers Scarlet Knights (5-3) in their final game to take fifth place in the Inaugural Players Era Festival Tournament at the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas, NV.

It’s still early and Coach Buzz Williams always gets his team whipped into shape if conference ball starts. They have a clear identity on both sides of the ball and the staff knows exactly what they want to do. However, the win against a good but inexperienced Rutgers team was another poor shooting night. It was another game where they shot below 40% in the first half and under 80% from the free-throw line.

Rutgers young guns Dylan Harper and Ace Bailey gave them all they could handle for a combined 42 points and 13 rebounds, keeping the Scarlet Knights in the game and even taking the lead a few times. The Aggies were led by All-SEC guard Wade Taylor, who scored 24 points, while Solomon Washington, Henry Coleman III, and Manny Obaseki all pitched in with 11 a piece.

A&M has all the right pieces and has been put in a great position to be 8-0 against quality competition. They are buying into what Buzz is selling and for the most part, it’s working.

However, they have to reward their coach by finishing shots and closing out teams earlier. The SEC is too competitive to leave points on the court on makeable shots.

They continue to look the part of a top-25 team but if they want to make some noise late in the season, the shooting percentage have to improve dramatically. Still the Aggies showed their resiliency holding off a dangerous team for an 81-77 win to close out their time in Las Vegas.

Texas A&M forward Rob Dockery no longer with the basketball team

Reports from Gig247 confirm Texas A&M basketball’s forward Rob Dockery is no longer on the team.

On Friday afternoon, Andrew Hattersley of Gig247 confirmed with an athletic department spokesperson that Texas A&M small forward Rob Dockery is no longer part of the team. The redshirt sophomore saw action in the first two games before logging zero in the last two.

On a team full of 6’7″ forwards and a veteran lineup getting on the court as a redshirt freshman was going to be tough. While we do not know why Dockery is no longer with the team the eye test would say playing time might have played a slight role. The former Washington, D.C. All-State forward averaged 14 points, 6 rebounds, and 3 assists choosing Texas A&M over schools like Maryland and Rutgers.

A&M has a challenging road test when they travel to Las Vegas for the Player Era Festival Tournament where they will open up with Oregon and No. 14 Creighton. Game one will be on Nov 26 at 3:30 pm CST and can be seen on TBS.

Here are the best photos from Texas A&M’s 71-54 comeback win over Southern

Here are some of the best photos from Texas A&M’s 71-54 win over Southern

Texas A&M plays a very aggressive brand of basketball, and with that comes a few gaps on both sides of the court that the Aggies need to clean up heading into the Players Era Festival Tournament.

As you know by now, A&M played a horrible first half that could get them in trouble as they start to play more Quad 1&2 teams in the next few weeks. On offense, they have to hit their free throws. They are doing an elite job getting to the rim and drawing fouls, but they barely shot 50% against the Jaguars.

Then they had an unusual issue of not being able to finish near the basket and they should have scored closer to 90 points. Especially, since they had 29 offensive rebounds in the contest. However, the second half is more of what we should be accustomed to, seeing as the team starts to gel with the handful of new players added to the team.

Below are some of the best photos from the game.

Instant reaction to Texas A&M basketball’s 71-54 win over Southern at Reed Arena

The Aggies bounce back after sluggish first half to blow past the Southern Jaguars

The No. 23 Texas A&M Aggies (4-1) survived a poor shooting first half in Reed Arena to beat the Southern Jaguars (1-4) 71-54, as the Aggies’ second-half explosion finished out their first home stand of the season.

It’s too early in the season to worry about trap games, but A&M had one of the most sluggish starts to a game I’ve seen in recent history. They shot a horrendous 22.9% from the field and 50% at the free-throw line. After the first 20 minutes rolled off the clock, the Aggies went into the locker room down 14 points to the unranked Jaguars.

Whatever head coach Buzz Williams told his team during halftime must have resonated because the Aggies came out with a burst of energy.

A&M took their first lead since early in the first half on a Jace Carter layup, putting them up 45-44. They went on a 28-5 run and expanded their lead to 53-44. Zhuric Phelps, Wade Taylor, and Andersson Garcia all finished in double figures, playing a much more efficient game in the second half.

A&M shook off a slow start to round themselves into shape and get back to Buzz Williams’ brand of basketball. Swarming defense and aggressive drives to the basket put the Maroon & White back in control of the game, allowing for some good work before they head out of town for the Players Era Festival.

Best Photos from Texas A&M’s 78-64 win over Ohio State

Here are just some of the best photos from Texas A&M’s 78-64 win over Ohio State on Friday night

Texas A&M (3-1) has not played up to its potential against ranked competition during nonconference play under head coach Buzz Williams, but with what looks the best team he’s had during his sixth season with the program, Friday’s 78-64 win over No. 21 Ohio State sent clear message to the rest of the SEC.

Coming into the game, Ohio State’s 3-point shooting success took a step back after facing Texas A&M’s elite peremeter defense, holding the Buckeyes to 26% from byond the arc. However, A&M’s shooting wasn’t much better, but credit to the guard trio of Wade Taylor (15 points), Zhuric Phelps (14 points) and Manny Obaseki (15) for driving the paint and sutaining fouls.

Getting to the line on what felt like every possession, the Aggies shot 80% from the stripe, make 32 of 40 attempts which kept the double digit intanct throughout the second half.

After the game, head coach Buzz Williams noted that he offense is still finding its identity, which is a good sign with games against Oregon, Creighton, and Purdue upcoming.

Here are the best photos from No. 23 Texas A&M’s 78-64 win over No. 21 Ohio State.

No. 23 Texas A&M defeats No. 21 Ohio State 78-64 behind an elite defensive effort

Texas A&M is now 3-1 on the season after defeating No. 21 Ohio State on Friday night

Texas A&M (3-1) played some of its best defensive game of the season in Friday’s ranked home matchup vs. Ohio State on Friday night, as the Aggies hosted and defeated the 2-0 Buckeyes 78-64, who recently defeated the Texas Longhorns.

Still establishing their offensive identity, especially with senior guard Zhuric Phelps now in the lineup, head coach Buzz Williams knew that the Aggies would be to play air-tight perimeter defense against one of the best 3-point shooting teams in the county as the Buckeyes entered the game shooting nearly 50% from beyond the arc.

Williams utilized the deepest roster he had ever had at his disposal throughout the night as the Aggies held Ohio State to 34% shooting (20-59) and 26% from three. A&M’s shooting night wasn’t any better, finishing 39% from the field and 38% from three.

However, the Aggies won this game at the free throw line, shooting 80% from the stripe, while the senior guard Manny Obaseki (15 points), Wade Taylor (15 points), and Zhuric Phelps (14 points) made several tough shots to keep the big lead intact in the second half.

Texas A&M’s guard play looks the part, with Taylor, Phelps, and Obaseki showing physicality in the paint and making their open shots. Still, center Pharrel Payne’s play next to Andersson Garcia (5 points) and Henry Coleman (12 points) has taken the Aggies’ defense to the next level, as the junior’s two blocks mirrored former Aggie forward Robert Williams, especially from an athleticism standpoint.

This is with “Buzz Ball” to the fullest extent, as the Aggies have shown to be the better team in rock fight-style defensive battles during his tenure.

At the same time, A&M’s shooting and offensive game plans need to improve, but this was a huge win that won’t be forgotten in early March.

Note: Texas A&M’s 3-point shooting plan will continue to involve former Nebraska guard CJ Wilcher (, who made two of his three outside attempts, displaying a solid stroke and the ability to create space.

Texas A&M will host Southern (0-3) on Wednesday, Nov. 20 at 7:00 p.m. CT. The game will be available to stream on SEC Network+ or ESPN+

Texas A&M vs Ohio State predictions, picks, odds

Odds courtesy of BetMGM as of Friday, 11/15

This game could go either way and it will come down to who will hit their free throws. I see this as an extremely physical game that’s going to put both teams on the line a lot through four quarters. I believe Wade Taylor will have a monster game allowing them to pull away late and maintain a single digit lead to close out the contest.

Prediction: Texas A&M 75 – Ohio State 71

Odds: Texas A&M by 5.5

O/U: 147.5

Texas A&M basketball will need to lean on Andersson Garcia and Zhuric Phelps

Texas A&M head coach Buzz Williams talks about the qualities that Andersson Garcia and Zhuric Phelps bring to the Aggies

On Monday, Head Coach Buzz Williams gave his thoughts about the big win over Lamar in their bounce-back victory in their home opener. Buzz’s big advantage this season is the returning experience led by senior guard Wade Taylor IV.

Senior forward Andersson Garcia and senior guard Zhuric Phelps have very important roles this year, and Wade Taylor will need to lean on these two to help relieve some of the stress on the offense side. Former SMU guard Phelps has made an immediate impact, averaging 17 points and 63.6% from the field. He also had six steals in his first two games in the Maroon & White.

Garcia, better known as “The Dominican Dennis Rodman,” is somewhat of a cult hero in Aggieland. When he is not grabbing rebounds, he is playing in the band or knocking down game-tying three-pointers in the postseason. He is the top offensive rebounder in the SEC and has been working on this jump shot, turning himself into a double-double machine.

Below are a few comments from Buzz Williams about how Garcia and Phelps have already significantly impacted the last two games.

“Andersson Garcia is really bright. How he processes rebounding is savant-ish. He is a much more confident shooter than he has ever been because of the work he’s put in. He can shoot.”

“Not only does Zhuric impact our team, but he’s going to make the game easier for the other four guys on the floor. I think he has a very high ceiling. He’s a great on-ball defender and that changes our team. I don’t think he’s close to his ceiling yet.”

No. 23 Texas A&M will host No. 21 Ohio State on Friday, Nov. 15. The game will air on SEC Network at 8:00 p.m. CT.
