Everything HC Buzz Williams, Pharrel Payne and Zhuric Phelps said after 70-66 win over Purdue

Texas A&M head coach Williams, Phelps, and Payne had to say after 70-66 win over Purdue at the Indy Classic

Texas A&M head coach Buzz Williams intentionally scheduled his non-conference games, and after an early season stumble against UCF, the Aggies have won 9 of the next ten games.

No. 11 Purdue was the latest victory after a 70-66 win where the Aggies played smothering defense and shot the best they have all season long. A big key to the win was the efficiency of junior transfer Pharrel Payne, who went 6-6 for 16 points and pulled down nine rebounds. He discussed where he felt the team stepped in the right direction in this game.

“I would say communication is who we are we take a lot of pride in that I think defense is what we would say makes our team go so that’s a big thing for us.”

Buzz has caught some flack over the last few seasons as a team that hasn’t really put together a full year of constant play. However, they are off to a much better start this year and they have gotten much better at closing out games and their maturity is showing when they get in tough spots.

“I think our guys through the schedule we’ve played through their maturity through their experience. I think they’re beginning to have maybe a little bit of peace and being uncomfortable.”

Saturday morning’s Indy Classic was meant to be a neutral site game featuring No. 17 Texas A&M against No. 11 Purdue. However, it turned out otherwise. With Purdue located about an hour from Gainbridge Fieldhouse, the game was not just physical, but also hostile.

The Aggies were unfazed and shook off a sloppy first half where they committed several turnovers but still had a lead going into halftime. Out of the locker room, they seemed to have more intensity and were able to gain a sizeable lead that Purdue could not overcome with a final score of 70-66 for another Quad 1 win for A&M.

The Aggies are on a roll, having won five in a row. They started with a ranked Ohio State team, followed by wins over Creighton, Rutgers, Texas Tech, and now Purdue. When completely healthy, Texas A&M is a perfect 9-0 and could head into SEC play at 11-2 with a ton of momentum.

Watch: Former Aggie star gives post game speech after Texas A&M’s win over Purdue

Current Indiana Pacer and former star Texas A&M guard Quenton Jackson stopped by the locker room after Texas A&M’s 70-66 win over Purdue

Texas A&M (9-2) has won five in a row after defeating No. 11 Purdue (8-3) in what should be considered a road game instead of a neutral-court matchup during Saturday’s Indy Classic.

Defeating the Boilermakers 70-66, A&M’s prolific defense never wilted. At the same time, the Aggies saw minor improvement from beyond the arc and enhanced play from junior big man Pharrel Payne, who finished with 16 points and nine rebounds in his best game with the program.

While A&M’s average offense can only improve heading into SEC play, if the defense continues to suffocate opponents and neutralize consistency from beyond the arc, the team can beat anyone on any given day.

The Aggies have won five consecutive games, and every victory has been against a major conference opponent, including Ohio State, Creighton, Rutgers, Wake Forest, Texas Tech, and now Purdue. If each team listed meets preseason expectations, we’re talking about four to five Quad 1 victories in nonconference play.

After the game, former Texas A&M star guard Quenton Jackson, currently on the Indiana Pacers’ 2024 roster, met the team in the locker room to congratulate the Aggies on the signature win. Here is Jackson’s post-game locker room speech:

Instant reaction to Texas A&M basketball’s 70-66 win over Purdue

Texas A&M picks up another Quad 1 win over a tough Purdue team on the road

Texas A&M (9-2) came on strong in the second half to beat No. 11 Purdue (8-3) by 70-66 in the Indy Classic at the Gainbridge Fieldhouse

At times, the distinction between solid defense and careless basketball is subtle, evident in this game. The first half featured numerous turnovers, particularly by A&M, which tallied double-digit mistakes. This allowed Purdue to stay competitive, gaining momentum from beyond the arc with four crucial three-pointers and some quick fast-break scores.

Despite the turnovers, Texas A&M forward Pharrel Payne and guard Hayden Hefener made a few clutch baskets near the end of the half to tie the game. Then the Aggies do what they are known for, and Zhuric Phelps and Henry Coleman went 3-4 at the free-throw line to take a 38-35 lead into the locker room.

In the second half, Texas A&M transformed into a defensive powerhouse reminiscent of the 1985 Bears, putting Purdue on its heels. Every shot faced intense pressure, and A&M capitalized by sinking shots, igniting a 12-0 run that led them to a 62-52 advantage with under five minutes remaining. The Boilermakers rallied back to narrow the gap to six points, but it was too late for a comeback, allowing A&M to secure a 70-66 victory.

GAME NOTES:

  • Pharrel Payne went 6-6 for 16 point and 9 rebounds
  • The Aggies out rebounded Purdue 34-23
  • 44% FG / 40.9% 3PT / 70.8% FT

Texas A&M Basketball vs Purdue: Channel, time, streaming info

Watch Texas A&M vs Purdue game today. Here’s how to watch, time, TV schedule, live streaming info, and game odds.

The No. 17 Texas A&M men’s basketball team (8-2) will travel to Indianapolis to face the No. 11 Purdue Boilermakers (8-2) at the Gainbridge Fieldhouse on Saturday morning in the Indy Classic.

This game is crucial for both teams aiming to secure a non-conference Quad 1 victory to enhance their resumes. Texas A&M has been on a winning streak, despite shooting just above 40%. Their aggressive play often disrupts opponents, leading to poor shot choices. However, this defensive approach can also result in a number of open three-point attempts for their rivals.

Head coach Buzz Williams will have to be careful with how he wants to deal with a Purdue team that shoots a lot of three and shoots them well. They have shot over 200 from beyond the arc at almost 41%, close to the Aggies’ regular shooting. Either way, this is shaping up to be a classic matchup among two top 25 teams.

Texas A&M HC Buzz Williams hopes a tough non-conference schedule pays dividends

The Aggies’ tough non-conference schedule will keep them in the front of the selection committee at the end of the season

After ten games, we have a baseline for the 2024 Texas A&M basketball team. They are an aggressive team on offense and defense looking to score around the rim and rack up fouls in their favor. When they can’t get to the rim, they settle for jump shots where they are currently shooting below 40% for the season.

So far, the formula is working, with the Aggies holding an 8-2 record after beating Texas Tech on the road. Coach Buzz Williams has made comments in the past about the selection committee, but over the last few seasons, instead of complaining, he has scheduled tough non-conference games.

“When it all unfolds, I feel really good about how many Quad I and Quad II games we’ll have on our resume. Playing five neutral sites in two and a half weeks might be going overboard, but I hope that math will work for us.”

That math is working early, and the Aggies a riding a four-game winning streak with a Quad 1 win, two Quad 2 wins, and a Quad 3 win that might bump to a Quad 2 win later in the year. But we know it’s a long season, and the hope is that the teams played early in the year get better, bumping them up to Quad 1/2 games when it’s all said and done.

Texas A&M will travel to Indiana to face No. 6 Purdue on Saturday, Dec. 14, for an early 11:00 a.m. CT tip-off. The game will air on CBS.

Here are the best photos from Texas A&M’s 57-44 win over Wake Forest

View some best photos from Texas A&M’s 55-44 win over Wake Forest

Texas A&M’s defense was on full display in the second half of the game against Wake Forest. It was so dominant that even the announcers blamed the turnovers that A&M committed in the first half for Wake Forest’s inability to find an offensive footing.

While the Aggies once again shot below 40%, they held the Deacon Demons to 18 points in the second half, leaving them scrambling on offense. The A&M big men have stepped up the past few games as guards Zhuric Phelps and Manny Obaseki have struggled to score. Henry Coleman III is off to his best start since his freshman year with 11.1 points and 6.4 rebounds through the first nine games

All of the pieces are there for A&M, and the proof is that they can have objectively bad shooting while still winning games against quality teams. The Wake Forest win can be a good Quad 1 win in the future when the selection committee starts flexing its power.

Everything Coach Buzz Williams had to say after 57-44 win over Wake Forest

Here’s everything head coach Buzz Williams had to say ahead of Texas A&M basketball’s home win over Wake Forest

Texas A&M gets another quality win over a game Wake Forest team. After a first half marred with turnovers, the Aggies cleaned up their game and found a way to come out victorious at Reed Arena.

The hallmark of the Aggie team is their defense and intensity throughout the game. Although their scoring has seen better days, even while shooting around 40%, they are winning quality games. On top of playing lights-out defense, they are grabbing many rebounds and getting to the free-throw line. Their experience and aggressiveness have played a major role in Tuesday’s win

“We had to have a lot of endurance just to hang around. We only fouled them six percent of the time. That’s the lowest number we’ve ever had. We were getting stops without fouling.”

Below, you can watch the entire post-game conference.

Texas A&M will go on the road to Fort Worth, TX to face Texas Tech at Dickies Arena at 2:00 pm CST on Dec. 8. The game can be watched on ESPN2.

Instant reaction to Texas A&M basketball’s 57-44 win over Wake Forest

Texas A&M pulls away late to move to 7-2 on the season after beating Wake Forest at Reed Arena

Texas A&M (7-2) came on strong in the second half to beat Wake Forest (7-3) in the SEC/ACC Challenge at Reed Arena.

The best way to describe this game is “out of sync.” Neither team performed well in the first half, with the Aggies committing an unacceptable 14 turnovers. Wake Forest struggled to execute their offensive plays, resulting in a shooting percentage of less than 30%. Fortunately for Texas A&M, their strong defense allowed them to take a narrow 29-26 lead into the locker room.

A&M intensified its defense in the second half, limiting Wake Forest to just 18 points. While the Aggies didn’t significantly improve their shooting, Andersson Garcia and Henry Coleman played crucial roles in gradually expanding their lead as the half progressed. Garcia recorded 16 rebounds and contributed five points, while Coleman added 10 points to the team’s efforts.

At this point, we know who this Aggie team is until they show us something different. It’s a team that will sub 40% shooting team that plays relentless defense, and grabs every offensive rebound in sight. Coach Buzz Williams can’t shoot the ball for his guys but before it gets too late, they need to find a way to capitalize on playmakers on the team.

Instant reaction to Texas A&M basketball’s 80-77 win over Rutgers

Texas A&M holds off Rutgers to take fifth place in the Players Era Festival Tournament

Saturday afternoon, No. 20 Texas A&M Aggies (6-2) defeated the Rutgers Scarlet Knights (5-3) in their final game to take fifth place in the Inaugural Players Era Festival Tournament at the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas, NV.

It’s still early and Coach Buzz Williams always gets his team whipped into shape if conference ball starts. They have a clear identity on both sides of the ball and the staff knows exactly what they want to do. However, the win against a good but inexperienced Rutgers team was another poor shooting night. It was another game where they shot below 40% in the first half and under 80% from the free-throw line.

Rutgers young guns Dylan Harper and Ace Bailey gave them all they could handle for a combined 42 points and 13 rebounds, keeping the Scarlet Knights in the game and even taking the lead a few times. The Aggies were led by All-SEC guard Wade Taylor, who scored 24 points, while Solomon Washington, Henry Coleman III, and Manny Obaseki all pitched in with 11 a piece.

A&M has all the right pieces and has been put in a great position to be 8-0 against quality competition. They are buying into what Buzz is selling and for the most part, it’s working.

However, they have to reward their coach by finishing shots and closing out teams earlier. The SEC is too competitive to leave points on the court on makeable shots.

They continue to look the part of a top-25 team but if they want to make some noise late in the season, the shooting percentage have to improve dramatically. Still the Aggies showed their resiliency holding off a dangerous team for an 81-77 win to close out their time in Las Vegas.
