NASCAR has made several tweaks to the format for the Busch Light Clash at the L.A. Coliseum, which will be the third edition of the exhibition event.

Cup Series teams will take to the track for the first time Saturday, February 3, for a combined practice and qualifying session. The field will be split into three groups and each group will have three sessions on track. However, there will not be single car qualifying and a driver’s fastest lap from the final practice session will determine the lineups for the heat races.

There will be four heat races of 25 laps. The top five drivers from each heat race will advance to the Clash.

The heat races will take place Saturday instead of Sunday. The Sunday, Feb. 4, events will be the last chance qualifying race and the Busch Light Clash.

NASCAR also made the move to one last chance qualifying race (75 laps) instead of two races of 50 laps as in years past. And the field size for the Busch Light Clash has been decreased by four as only 23 drivers will make the field versus 27 from last year.

The Busch Light Clash at the Coliseum will be 150 laps and only green flag laps will count. The race must finish under green.

USC Heisman Trophy winner Caleb Williams named starter for NASCAR race

Caleb Williams was named the starter in a sport other than football.

USC quarterback Caleb Williams, the 2022 Heisman Trophy winner, has been named the honorary starter for the Busch Light Clash at the Los Angeles Coliseum on Sunday, Feb. 5.

He’s the latest addition to a star-studded event that includes the top drivers and cars of the NASCAR Cup Series, and performances by hip hop icons Cypress Hill and Wiz Khalifa.

NASCAR made the announcement regarding The Busch Light Clash at the Coliseum on Sunday evening. Williams will wave the green flag for the race that will take place in two weeks.

Williams became the eighth player in USC’s storied history to win the Heisman Trophy. He led the nation with 42 touchdown passes and threw for 4,537 yards for a team that won 11 games. Moreover, Williams’ elusiveness made him a threat on the run. He rushed for 442 yards and six TDs

The Bush Light Clash at the L.A. Coliseum will start at 8 p.m. Eastern on Feb. 5 and will be televised by Fox.
