Sixers send Buddy Hield in sign-and-trade deal to Warriors for draft pick

The Philadelphia 76ers send Buddy Hield to the Golden State Warriors in a sign-and-trade deal for a draft pick.

The Philadelphia 76ers and the Golden State Warriors began talks on a sign-and-trade deal in recent days to send Buddy Hield to The Bay. The Sixers acquired Hield from the Indiana Pacers at the deadline as they expected to add him to Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey.

Unfortunately, the Hield acquisition didn’t work out the way they had hoped. President of Basketball Operations Daryl Morey admitted that the Hield addition didn’t work out the way he had hoped after the Round 1 elimination loss.

Now, Hield will head to the Warriors. In return, the Sixers will get a 2031 second-round pick via the Dallas Mavericks.

In 32 games for the Sixers after the trade, Hield averaged 12.2 points, 3.2 rebounds, and 3.0 assists. He shot 38.9% from deep on 6.6 attempts, but he struggled at times to find his rhythm.

Now, he will look to find it again with the Warriors. The good news for the Sixers is they are able to get something in return for him.

What comes next for Sixers-Warriors sign-and-trade deal for Buddy Hield?

What comes next for the Philadelphia 76ers and the Golden State Warriors in the Buddy Hield sign-and-trade?

Buddy Hield appears ready to leave the Philadelphia 76ers for the Golden State Warriors as the teams are currently in deep talks on a sign-and-trade deal for the sharpshooter.

There are a few different ways this deal could go. The likely option is for the Sixers to take back a second-round pick or two from Golden State and just keep it pushing. The Warriors could also loop in the Dallas Mavericks and the Minnesota Timberwolves who Golden State has separate sign-and-trade deals and make it a bigger deal than it currently is.

The second option benefits Philadelphia much better.

The Athletic’s Jon Hollinger broke it down like this:

If the Golden State Warriors send Gui Santos to Philadelphia and sign second-round pick Quinten Post to a rookie minimum deal, that leaves them about $14 million under the tax apron for Buddy Hield. But the only way I can see to import him at that salary is to incorporate Hield and Kyle Anderson into the same sign-and-trade that sent Klay Thompson outbound, turning it into a five-team mega trade between Charlotte, Dallas, Minnesota, Golden State and Philadelphia.

The potential acquisition of Gui Santos in this Hield deal would greatly benefit the Sixers. Hollinger explained the reason why Philadelphia would want to do something like that in order to make future deals:

Why Santos? Philadelphia acquiring him into cap space would mean the Sixers could aggregate him into a trade immediately. That, perhaps, would allow them to combine his salary and Paul Reed’s to acquire a player not attainable with Reed’s salary alone, such as Cleveland’s Caris LeVert or Sacramento’s Kevin Huerter.

This doesn’t mean that Caris LeVert or Kevin Huerter would all of a sudden become available, but the Sixers would be able to make immediate deals with Santos on the payroll. There is still work to do, but it appears that the Sixers and Warriors are in the midst of working on this Hield deal to make it all work.

Report: Warriors ‘in serious talks’ on sign-and-trade to acquire Buddy Hield from 76ers

The Warriors are reportedly in “serious talks” to acquire Buddy Hield from the 76ers in a sign-and-trade.

After bringing in De’Anthony Melton and Kyle Anderson in the opening window of free agency, Mike Dunleavy Jr. and the Golden State Warriors are still working to build out the remainder of their roster.

Following the departure of Klay Thompson to the Dallas Mavericks, the Warriors are reportedly working to acquire another sharpshooter.

According to Shams Charania of The Athletic, the Warriors are “in serious talks” on a sign-and-trade to acquire Buddy Hield from the Philadelphia 76ers. The Warriors and Sixers are in “deep discussions” as they work to finalize a deal, per Charania.

Via @ShamsCharania on Twitter:

Earlier on Tuesday, the Warriors swapped second-round picks in a sign-and-trade with the Minnesota Timberwolves for Anderson. The remaining details of Hield’s sign-and-trade with the Warriors have yet to be released.

Hield was the No. 6 overall pick in the 2016 NBA draft out of Oklahoma. In eight seasons, Hield has played for the New Orleans Pelicans, Sacramento Kings, Indiana Pacers and Philadelphia 76ers.

Last season, Hield was traded from the Pacers to the Sixers. During the 2023-24 season, Hield averaged 12.1 points on 43.6% shooting from the field and 38.5% from deep to go along with 3.2 rebounds and 2.8 assists in 25.7 minutes per game.

Hield is a prolific 3-point shooter, taking nearly seven triples a game. Hield has made over 200 3-pointers in each of the last two seasons, along with four other times in his career.

Hield will slide into the backcourt alongside Steph Curry, Brandin Podziemski, Moses Moody, Gary Payton II and fellow new addition Melton.

Sixers in talks to send Buddy Hield to Warriors in sign-and-trade deal

The Philadelphia 76ers are in talks to send Buddy Hield to the Golden State Warriors in a sign-and-trade deal.

The Philadelphia 76ers made a big deal at the deadline to acquire Buddy Hield from the Indiana Pacers in an effort to boost their playoff chances. The sharpshooter out of Oklahoma shot 38.9% from deep in 32 games with the Sixers, but his production was up and down.

Hield seemed to have a tough time adjusting to Joel Embiid when the big fella returned from injury and he had a tough playoff series against the New York Knicks. He was struggling through the first three games of the series before not playing in Games 4 and 5 and then scoring 20 points in the Game 6 elimination loss.

Now, Hield appears headed to the Golden State Warriors. The free agent guard looks like he will agree to a deal with the Warriors and the Sixers are in deep discussions on a sign-and-trade deal with Golden State.

The Warriors lost Klay Thompson to the Dallas Mavericks in free agency so to replace him, they will look to Hield. He is an elite shooter who will likely be a good fit next to Stephen Curry.

Sixers’ Buddy Hield back in the gym working on different types of jumpers

Philadelphia 76ers guard Buddy Hield is back in the gym working on different types of jumpers.

The Philadelphia 76ers acquired Buddy Hield at the trade deadline from the Indiana Pacers looking to bring in an elite shooter next to Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey.

On paper, Hield looked like a perfect fit. However, it was a bit up and down for him and he had issues finding his groove next to Embiid. He was also benched for Games 4 and 5 of the playoffs against the New York Knicks before breaking out for 20 points in Game 6.

As he now enters free agency, his trainer in Dallas posted a video on his TikTok account of Hield working on different types of jumpers. He also is wearing Sixers gear which is an interesting sight.

Overall, Hield averaged 12.1 points, 3.2 rebounds, and 2.8 assists while shooting 38.6% from deep split between the Sixers and the Pacers. The Sixers could bring him back on a smaller deal after chasing after the big names in free agency, but he will need to figure out how to play next to Philadelphia’s stars if he does return.

Bleacher Report suggests Buddy Hield as offseason signing for Rockets

After an underwhelming run in Philadelphia, could veteran sharpshooter Buddy Hield turn to the Rockets? Bleacher Report thinks so.

The Rockets appear to be prioritizing shooting in the 2024 NBA offseason, and Milwaukee guard Malik Beasley (41.3% on 3-pointers) is reportedly among Houston’s free agency targets.

Bleacher Report’s Andy Bailey suggests Buddy Hield is another name to monitor in 2024 free agency.

Of Hield and the Rockets, Bailey writes:

It’s about solidifying supporting cast around that [young] core, and shooting should be a priority there. Houston was 23rd in 3-point percentage this season, and Hield is certainly a player who can help on that front. Signing for the non-taxpayer’s mid-level would be a step down in pay, but it may be worth it for an opportunity to play for an up-and-comer like this.

For his eight-year NBA career, Hield is a 40% shooter from 3-point range on high volume (7.6 attempts per game).

On paper, that type of efficiency might make Hield too expensive for the non-taxpayer mid-level exception (NT-MLE), which, with a starting annual salary of around $13 million, is the maximum financial tool the Rockets have available to use this offseason.

Then again, Hield is 31 years old, and the 6-foot-4 guard is coming off an underwhelming run in Philadelphia where he fell out of the 76ers’ rotation during the first round versus New York. In all, Hield averaged just 12.8 minutes per game against the Knicks and missed two games altogether (at the decision of head coach Nick Nurse). Former Rockets general manager Daryl Morey, who heads basketball operations there, gave a less-than-glowing review.

That could make it less likely the Sixers want to retain Hield, and it might also lower his leverage on the open market. In turn, that could make Hield more affordable to a team like the Rockets. On the other hand, it’s entirely possible that Hield might not defend at a high enough level to interest Rockets head coach Ime Udoka.

Stay tuned! Free agency negotiations can begin on June 30.

Buddy Hield tops list of potential Bulls free agency targets

If the Chicago Bulls want to improve their roster this summer, one of their top priorities should be to add some three-point shooting to the mix. Zach Buckley recently road a free-agent big board for Chicago, and he put Buddy Hield at the top of the list.

“If the Bulls get nothing else done this offseason, they should at least find ways to up their three-point volume,” Buckley wrote. “There is a cap on how efficient this offense can be when it holds bottom-five rankings in three-point makes (27th) and attempts (26th), never mind what better spacing might mean for attackers like DeRozan and Coby White. It wouldn’t be shocking to see Chicago throw the entire non-taxpayer’s mid-level exception at this perimeter deficiency, and if it does, that might be enough to snag Buddy Hield.

“He is an elite outside shooter who routinely wows with volume and efficiency. The 31-year-old is already top-25 all-time in three-point makes (1,924, 22nd), a feat made all the more impressive by the fact he’s also a 40 percent perimeter shooter for his career. Hield is probably hoping for a bigger payout than this, but there aren’t a slew of win-now teams with money to spend, and the 76ers might be focused on bigger-fish pursuits.”

Hield has been one of the best three-point shooters since he’s stepped in the league, and he would undoubtedly help Chicago’s offense.

Buddy Hield receives season review from Sixers president Daryl Morey

Buddy Hield receives a review from Philadelphia 76ers President of Basketball Operations Daryl Morey.

CAMDEN, N.J. — The Philadelphia 76ers acquired Buddy Hield from the Indiana Pacers at the trade deadline. The free agent to be was expected to provide the necessary shooting to complement Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey on the offensive end.

In 32 games for the Sixers, Hield averaged 12.2 points and shot 38.9% from deep. He played most of his games without Embiid due to the injury the big fella suffered. He played five regular-season games with Embiid.

Then, Hield had a tough start to the postseason and was out of the rotation for games 4 and 5 in the first round. He had 20 points in Game 6, however, as he found his rhythm.

“I think, at no fault of Buddy’s, the fit was less good than I thought,” said President of Basketball Operations Daryl Morey. “Obviously, most of his time was without Joel, but I thought when Joel was back that his impact and his shooting, that he’d get more open shots, he didn’t. So that’s on me that it didn’t work out as we hoped. I still think it was one of the better acquisitions.”

In theory, Hield should be a perfect player to put next to Embiid and Maxey due to his shooting. It was tough for him to find his rhythm midseason and with the injury issues up and down the roster. If he returns to Philadelphia in free agency, one has to assume a full training camp will help.

“I was really happy he showed what he can do in Game 6, and based on how they’re guarding us what he can do, but for sure, there was no one more disappointed than him that he fell out of the rotation,” Morey added. “I think Nick correctly saw based on how they were guarding us that it was hard for him to impact the game and then when they changed up how they were guarding us he did show what he can do.”

Other acquisitions such as Kyle Lowry and Cam Payne made an impact. Morey knows what Hield can do. It didn’t work out, but there is hope he can make an impact in the future.

“I think Kyle Lowry and Cam Payne, both of them really added to the team, they were able to add at a high level,” he finished. “And then Buddy, it just didn’t quite work as well as we had hoped, but I do think going forward it still could work depending on the players that are around Joel and Tyrese.”

Buddy Hield expresses his desire to return to Sixers in free agency

Sharpshooter Buddy Hield expresses a desire to return to the Philadelphia 76ers in free agency.

PHILADELPHIA — The Philadelphia 76ers brought in Buddy Hield from the Indiana Pacers at the trade deadline. His performance with the Sixers was a bit up and down as Hield adjusted to the new team. Overall, his production was solid.

In 32 games with the Sixers, including 14 starts, he shot 38.9% from deep and averaged 12.2 points and 3 assists. The playoffs were a struggle. His slow start, two points through three games, led to him being removed from the rotation, but he had a phenomenal Game 6.

After not playing in games 4 and 5, Hield had 20 points off the bench and shot 6-for-9 from deep in the elimination loss to the New York Knicks. After Philadelphia fell behind by 20, his production helped the Sixers get back in it.

Entering free agency, Hield expressed a desire to return to the Sixers.

“I’m here now,” he said after the loss. “Yeah, we didn’t get things done how we wanted, but I’d like to be in Philly again. Philly, they traded for me, and I feel like they want me, too. To me, I look at it like I came to the party late. There were a lot of injuries. Before I was here, the team was rolling.”

President of Basketball Operations Daryl Morey has other matters to focus on, but one has to assume he would like to have Hield on this roster. His skill set is perfect next to Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey. It showed in Game 6 after he was out of the rotation.

“They had their guys they trusted, and I can understand that,” Hield added. “Right now, Philly’s the priority for me. We’ll see when it comes down. My agent is one call away, and we’ll figure something out, but if not, I’ll put my head down and keep working and I’m sure God is going to open up doors for me and for others.”

The Sixers have numerous free agents they have to make a decision on. It will be interesting to see what happens this offseason in Philadelphia.

Nick Nurse gives credit to Buddy Hield for being a good teammate for Sixers

Coach Nick Nurse gives credit to Buddy Hield for being a good teammate for the Philadelphia 76ers.

CAMDEN, N.J. — The Philadelphia 76ers acquired Buddy Hield at the deadline from the Indiana Pacers hoping he would make an impact in the playoffs for them with his shooting ability.

Through three games in the playoffs, Hield is shooting 0-for-4 from deep and coach Nick Nurse made the adjustment to turn to Cam Payne rather than Hield. A natural competitor, Hield wants to be out there, but he has found other ways to contribute.

Tyrese Maxey, for example, gave the credit to Hield for helping him get back on track in the Game 5 win over the New York Knicks.

“I think that it’s obviously a big lift,” Nurse said of Hield. “I think it’s great. He’s been around a little bit. He has some experience, and it’s great that he’s being a good teammate. I tried to stress to him to be patient and do that.”

There are always moments in the playoffs when a player will step up and make an impact. For now, it’s Payne. However, Hield is not pouting. He is staying in the moment and encouraging his teammates. He knows his time will come again, and Nurse wants him to be ready.

“You just never know,” Nurse added. “I think that puts you in the best frame of mind when you’re pulling for your guys and all that kind of stuff, so it’s good that he did that.”

Who knows when Hield will get his next opportunity? The important thing for him at this stage is to just remain patient and continue to be a good teammate for the Sixers.
