Panthers still haven’t decided on starting QB for Week 9

Panthers HC Dave Canales still did not name a starting QB for the Week 9 matchup against the Saints.

We still don’t know who will be under center for the Carolina Panthers in Week 9.

Just as he was on Sunday, head coach Dave Canales was asked this afternoon if he’s decided on his starting quarterback for the team’s upcoming matchup against the New Orleans Saints. And again, just like Sunday, no dice.

“It’s gonna be a couple of days,” Canales told reporters. “These are really important days. The next few, really getting all the way out there to Wednesday to play some live snaps and to do that.

“So, I’ll give you guys more information about that. But we really have to look at Andy [Dalton], where he’s at in the next couple of days to make a decision.”

Dalton, the team’s starter from Weeks 3 to 7, was inactive for yesterday’s 28-14 loss to the Denver Broncos. The 14th-year veteran sustained a sprained right thumb in a minor car accident this past Tuesday.

His injury gave way to second-year quarterback Bryce Young, who made his first start since Week 2. Young completed 24 of his 37 attempts for 224 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions.

Bryce Young explains what it was like facing Broncos’ defense

“Credit to the Broncos and their defense, they did a really good job,” Panthers QB Bryce Young said after Sunday’s game.

The Carolina Panthers benched quarterback Bryce Young after two games this season, turning the offense over to Andy Dalton.

After Dalton injured his thumb in a car accident last week, the Panthers went back to Young for their game against the Denver Broncos in Week 8. It was a tough matchup for Young to return to the lineup as Denver’s defense ranks near the top of the NFL in most major categories.

Considering the circumstances, Young had a decent performance. The second-year QB completed 64.9% of his passes for 224 yards and two touchdowns. He was also sacked twice and threw two interceptions.

Young led a 10-play, 49-yard scoring drive to begin the game. After that, Carolina’s offense struggled to get things going until late in the fourth. Young was asked after the game what happened after the opening drive.

“Just execution,” the QB said. “Credit to the Broncos and their defense, they did a really good job. Especially at the beginning, we felt like we were just one play away. Whether it was self-inflicted or just execution stuff.

“In the second half, we just got to do a better job of stringing along drives and executing. Credit to them they did a good job. For us, we have to watch the film and then see what we have to do to get better.”

Young was later asked what Denver’s defense did to take away the Panthers’ deep passing game on Sunday.

“They did a good job of mixing things up,” Young explained. “Giving a lot of different presentations, especially third down, doing different things. Same on base down, too. Again, credit to them.

“For us, we don’t want to let the defense dictate what we’re able to do or not able to do. We have to do a better job of executing. There was one that I missed. There was stuff left out there that I have to wear. We just got to watch the film and then see how we can be better.”

Carolina dropped to 1-7 following a 28-14 loss to the Broncos, who improved to 5-3. Up next for the Panthers is a home game against the New Orleans Saints (2-6). Denver will go on the road to take on the Baltimore Ravens (5-3) in Week 9.

Panthers HC Dave Canales gives his thoughts on Bryce Young’s performance in Week 8

Panthers HC Dave Canales on Bryce Young’s Week 8 performance: “We’re just asking Bryce to do his one part of it, and I thought he did a pretty good of that today.”

Carolina Panthers head coach Dave Canales didn’t give us a definitive answer as to who’ll be starting under center in Week 9. He was, however, willing to give his thoughts on the performance of his Week 8 starter Bryce Young.

Canales spoke with reporters following his team’s 28-14 loss to the Denver Broncos—where Young was, well, mostly underwhelming. In his first start since Week 2, the 2023 No. 1 overall pick completed 24 of his 37 throws for 224 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions.

So, how did he look according to Canales?

“I thought he had some excellent drives, I thought he had some excellent throws in there,” he said. “I think the offense will be the first to tell you—there were some things all across the board, in the run game and the pass game. We’re just asking Bryce to do his one part of it, and I thought he did a pretty good of that today.”

The Panthers finished the afternoon having converted on five of their 14 third-down tries with 16 first downs and 284 total yards. That’s not too shabby against a Broncos defense that allowed the fewest yards per game coming into the weekend.

Young, who was without the offense’s top two receivers in Diontae Johnson and Adam Thielen, recorded 224 net yards—the most allowed by Denver all season.

Dave Canales is asked who Panthers will start at QB in Week 9

Will it be Bryce Young or Andy Dalton under center for the Panthers in Week 9? HC Dave Canales was asked that question following Sunday’s loss in Denver.

Did Bryce Young do enough on Sunday to reclaim the starting job under center?

Week 8 brought some familiar results for the Carolina Panthers, as they took a 28-14 loss courtesy of the host Denver Broncos. The outing also saw some familiar results for Young, who led a mostly stagnant offense in yet another underwhelming performance.

Head coach Dave Canales, however, was asked if Young will remain the team’s starter over Andy Dalton for Week 9.

“We will look at all the information,” Canales replied. “We’ll look at Andy’s health over the next couple of days, and we’ll make that decision and we’ll have an answer for you in the next couple of days.”

Dalton, who started Carolina’s previous five games, was sidelined due to a sprained right thumb he sustained in a minor car accident this past Tuesday. In his last contest before the injury, Dalton completed just 11 of 18 passes for 93 yards and two interceptions in a 40-7 loss to the Washington Commanders.

Young, in his stead, fared a bit better. In his first start since Week 2, the 2023 No. 1 overall pick connected on 24 of his 37 throws for 224 yards, two scores and two picks against a tough Denver defense.

The 1-7 Panthers will return home for Week 9 to host the 2-6 New Orleans Saints.

Bo Nix breaks franchise record as Broncos cruise to 28-14 win over Panthers

The Broncos improved to 5-3 following Sunday’s win over the Panthers and Bo Nix now has the most wins by a rookie QB in franchise history.

The Denver Broncos improved to 5-3 on Sunday with a convincing 28-14 win over the Carolina Panthers, who dropped to 1-7.

With the win, Bo Nix now holds the franchise record for the most wins by a rookie quarterback (five), passing John Elway (four) and Drew Lock (four). Nix previously broke the franchise record for the most completions by a rookie just six games into his career.

Nix had a historic day, but the game got off to a shaky start for the Broncos.

Denver’s offense got the ball first but Carolina took over near midfield after Broncos wide receiver Lil’Jordan Humphrey lost a fumble on the third snap of the game. The Panthers took advantage of that turnover as Bryce Young led a 10-play, 49-yard drive that ended with a six-yard touchdown pass to Xavier Legette to take an early 7-0 lead.

On their next drive, the Broncos drove down to Carolina’s 28-yard line before Nix took a 13-yard sack that knocked Denver out of field goal range on third down. Riley Dixon and Co. then pinned the Panthers at their own one-yard line. Carolina promptly went three-and-out and the Broncos got the ball back at its 45-yard line.

Nix then led a seven-play, 55-yard drive that ended with a three-yard touchdown pass to tight end/fullback Nate Adkins to tie the game at 7-7.

One series later, Nix and the offense went 92 yards on seven plays on a drive that was capped off by Nix’s 19-yard touchdown pass to tight end Adam Trautman to make it 14-7.

Following that score, Denver took over near midfield after Pat Surtain tackled Panthers running back Miles Sanders short of the line to gain on fourth down. The Broncos then went 48 yards and Nix scored on a one-yard QB sneak to extend the lead to 21-7 ahead of halftime.

In the second half, the Panthers turned it over on downs at their own 24-yard line after a fake punt fell incomplete when punter Johnny Hekker was unable to connect with gunner Sam Franklin. Denver took advantage of that field position four plays later when Nix threw a nine-yard touchdown pass to running back Jaleel McLaughlin to make it 28-7.

Later in the third quarter, Broncos cornerback Pat Surtain intercepted a Young pass, but Denver wasn’t able to capitalize off that turnover.

In the fourth quarter, Broncos kicker Wil Lutz lined up for a 60-yard field goal attempt, but the team ran a fake to tight end Lucas Krull. The fake failed as Krull was tackled five yards short of the line to gain.

Later in the fourth quarter, Denver cornerback Ja’Quan McMillian picked off a Young pass in the end zone, essentially sealing the game.

The Broncos attempted to pour it on late in the game with a trick play that featured wide receiver Courtland Sutton throwing a deep pass to fullback Michael Burton. Sutton completed the pass but Denver turned it over three plays later when Sutton lost a fumble on his eighth catch of the game.

The Panthers scored a garbage time touchdown late in the fourth when Young threw a 15-yard touchdown pass to receiver Jalen Coker. That made it 28-14, which ended up being the final score after Carolina failed to recover an onside kick.

Nix finished the game 28-of-37 passing for 284 yards with three touchdowns and no turnovers, good for a 124.2 passer rating. Nix also rushed four times for five yards and a score.

On the injury front, Krull left in the fourth quarter with a shoulder injury, but he later returned to the game. Surtain also suffered an ankle injury in the fourth quarter.

Up next for the Broncos is back-to-back road games against the Baltimore Ravens and Kansas city Chiefs (view the full schedule here).

Panthers QB Bryce Young throws TD in 1st drive back as starter in Week 8

Panthers QB Bryce Young stepped up on his very first drive back as the starter under center.

It may have taken 19 starts and a second chance under center, but Carolina Panthers quarterback Bryce Young just manufactured the first opening-series touchdown drive of his career.

With veteran Andy Dalton out due to a sprained right thumb, Young got the starting nod for the 1-6 Panthers here in Week 8. And the 23-year-old didn’t waste too much time making his presence known—leading a 10-play, 49-yard scoring trek on Carolina’s opening touch of the afternoon.

The possession started on the Denver 49-yard line, thanks to a forced fumble and recovery by defensive lineman Shy Tuttle. The offense took over from there, as Young completed all five of his throws for 39 yards and a touchdown.

That score found the hands of rookie and fellow first-round pick Xavier Legette, who rode around the end zone for six.

Two former Alabama QBs expected to return to NFL starting lineups this week

Tua Tagovailoa and Bryce Young both expected to start this week.

So far, the 2024 NFL season has been a struggle for former Alabama Crimson Tide quarterbacks. Tua Tagovailoa suffered a brutal Week 2 concussion, Bryce Young was benched after Week 2, Jalen Hurts has struggled quite a bit and Mac Jones is in a backup role on a 2-5 Jacksonville team.

However, things are starting to turn around for Tagovailoa and Young, who are both expected to return to their starting lineups this week.

Tagovailoa completed the NFL’s concussion protocol on Friday, and neurological experts have told him he’s not risking further damage by playing. The Dolphins are in dire need of his return as they are 1-3 without him this year. Miami hosts the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday.

As for Young, he returns to the lineup due to an injury Andy Dalton suffered in a car accident. With the Panthers firmly out of the Playoff race, it makes all of the sense in the world to give Young the reins and let him learn in the fire. Carolina travels out West to take on the Broncos this weekend.

Who knows, the way things are going for the Jaguars, Jones may get a chance before the season is over.

Broncos vs. Panthers: 5 things to watch for in Week 8

The Broncos are set to host the Panthers this weekend. Here are five storylines to watch for going into Week 8.

The Denver Broncos (4-3) are set to host the Carolina Panthers (1-6) in Week 8 of the 2024 NFL season on Sunday, Oct. 27. Here are five storylines to keep an eye on going into the cross-conference showdown at Empower Field at Mile High.

1. Pat Surtain’s (expected) return to action: Suratin’s final status will be revealed when the injury report is released later today, but PS2 seems to be trending toward playing in Week 8. In his first game back from a concussion, will the star cornerback have any rust or pick right up where he left off?

2. Audric Estime’s ball security: Broncos veteran running back Javonte Williams gave Estime a football to carry around this week after the rookie fumbled twice on his first nine carries in the NFL. If Estime wants to remain a part of the backfield rotation, he needs to protect the ball better on Sundays. This week is shaping up as a good matchup for Denver’s suddenly-hot rushing attack as the Panthers’ defense has allowed 162.1 rushing yards per game, making them the worst run defense in the NFL.

3. Bryce Young vs. Denver’s defense: Young was benched after throwing three interceptions and no touchdowns in his first two games this season. After Andy Dalton injured his thumb in a car accident earlier this week, Young is now set to start for the Panthers in Week 8. This week, the second-year QB will face a Broncos defense that ranks third in yards allowed (282.4), fifth in passing yards allowed (170.7) and third in points allowed (15.1) per game. Denver has 10 takeaways this season and the team’s 28 sacks rank second in the NFL. On paper, this looks like a nightmare matchup for Young to make his return to the starting lineup.

4. Josey Jewell and Co. vs. Broncos: Carolina’s defense is coached by ex-Denver coordinator Ejiro Evero, who has four ex-Broncos defenders on his squad. Most notable among those players is Jewell, who started 58 games for Denver from 2018-2023. Jewell would undoubtedly love to return to Empower Field at Mile High and beat his old team on Sunday.

5. Bo Nix’s continued progress: Nix has made progress this season, but there’s still plenty of room for improvement. The rookie needs to eliminate his happy feet in the pocket, and his deep passes haven’t been accurate outside of just a handful of exceptions. Nix will have a great opportunity to take a step forward this week against a Panthers defense that has allowed 223.6 passing yards (eighth-worst) and 34.7 points per game (worst) this season. Nix and coach Sean Payton will probably find ways to get the ball to No. 1 receiver Courtland Sutton after he was a good sport about drawing zero targets in the team’s last game.

Sunday’s game will be regionally televised on CBS. The Broncos are considered big favorites against the Panthers going into Week 8.

Broncos coach Sean Payton gives his take on Panthers QB Bryce Young

“He has good vision, quick release,” Sean Payton said of Bryce Young. “He shows accuracy [and] poise. He’s played in big moments.”

Through seven games this season, the Denver Broncos‘ defense has totaled 28 sacks, second-most in the NFL.

In the two games he started earlier this season, Carolina Panthers quarterback Bryce Young was sacked six times. He threw three interceptions and no touchdown passes before being benched (Young did rush for one score).

Five games after taking over as the starter, Andy Dalton injured his thumb in a car crash this week, forcing the Panthers to go back to Young. The second-year QB is now set to start against the Broncos on Sunday.

During his media availability earlier this week, Denver coach Sean Payton praised Young and noted the QB’s experience at Alabama.

“He has good vision, quick release,” Payton said. “He shows accuracy [and] poise. He’s played in big moments. In other words, I remember him coming out. He’s played in real big moments. I think that you flip the focus when you have a change in quarterbacks from like one to the other, and you study it the best you can.”

The 4-3 Broncos are considered big favorites against the 1-6 Panthers this week, understandably so. Denver has to avoid Sunday potentially becoming a trap game. On paper, the matchup certainly looks like a huge mismatch in favor of the Broncos’ defense.
