WATCH: Bruno Fernando gets 9 points, 11 rebounds, 3 assists with Celtics vs. 76ers in Las Vegas Summer League

The Boston big man adds a new twist to the Celtics’ summer league rotation.

Fans of the Boston Celtics have had a pleasant surprise from the addition of former Atlanta Hawks big man Bruno Fernando to the team’s Las Vegas Summer League roster. Fernando offers a bit of ball movement alongside his interior scoring and rebounding to the undefeated summer Celtics’ frontcourt rotation.

He put that on display in Boston’s 100 – 80 blowout of the Philadelphia 76ers on Saturday, putting up 9 points, 11 boards, 3 assists, and a block in just 16 minutes of playing time. Fernando fouled 3 times, turning the ball over twice. He shot a very healthy 3-of-5 from the charity stripe and floor both, providing a reliable near-basket presence on both ends.

Watch the video embedded below put together by fan videographer Tomasz Kordylewski to see the best of Fernando’s game against the Sixers this weekend while we wait for the Celtics to gear up for the 2021 Las Vegas Summer League title game.

Celtics add big man Bruno Fernando to Las Vegas Summer League roster

The former Hawk could make his debut in a Boston uniform as soon as Tuesday night against the Nuggets.

If you notice a new face on the Boston Celtics’ Las Vegas Summer League roster as they take on the Denver Nuggets, your eyes are not deceiving you. Per the team, the Celtics added recently acquired big man Bruno Fernando to their Sin City summer league squad.

Fernando was part of the three-team trade this week that sent veteran center Tristan Thompson to the Sacramento Kings and brought back point guard Kris Dunn and the Luanda, Angola, native from the Atlanta Hawks. While the former Maryland standout has played for two seasons already in the NBA, he has yet to click as quality role player, so it makes sense to give him some run in Nevada.

With career averages of 3.3 points and 3.1 rebounds per game over 10.6 minutes per contest and the rudiments of a passing game, Fernando could prove a helpful option off the bench if he can stay on the floor.

With the team also reportedly exploring potential trade interest for him and Dunn, Boston could also be trying to drum up a little interest in the former Terrapin around the league.

43-year-old Vince Carter on Thursday officially announced his retirement from the NBA, a professional career that lasted 22 years and spanned four different decades.

The announcement came on the “Winging It With Vince Carter and Annie Finberg” podcast as the eight-time NBA All-Star made it official that he is done playing professional basketball. Carter announced last year that the 2019-20 season would be his last.

“I’m officially done playing basketball professionally,” Carter said.

Carter, the fifth overall pick in the 1998 NBA Draft, this year became the first player in NBA history to suit up in four different decades — the 1990s, 2000s, 2010s and 2020s. He made 60 appearances with the Atlanta Hawks this season, averaging five points per game.

Carter played his last game on March 11 as news of a possible season suspension began to surface. With the possibility of it being his last game, Carter was inserted into the game in the final seconds and drilled a 3-pointer, which proved to be the final shot of his career.

With Carter making it official on Thursday, several players of past and present took to Twitter to honor Vinsanity and his wonderful career in the NBA.
