The Bruins were on the short end of a 1-0 loss in the Steel City in the first half of the two-game set. It was the first time the B’s were blanked since March 28, also by a 1-0 score, against the New Jersey Devils. Boston had scored 27 goals across its previous seven games before the shutout loss.

The Pens have rattled off four straight victories and outscored the opposition 17-9 during the span. Pittsburgh enters this game 11-2 in its last 13 games as a home underdog and 4-1 in its past five against winning teams.

Rask took a no-decision against the lowly Buffalo Sabres Friday, as he allowed 4 goals on 28 shots. He is still 3-0-0 with a 2.17 GAA and .931 SV% through four starts in April.

Jarry made 30 saves Sunday for his first shutout of the season. He has rattled off four consecutive victories, and he hasn’t lost in regulation since March 18. Jarry is 2-1-1 with a 1.96 GAA and .938 SV% in four games against Boston.

The PENGUINS (+100) are a great play as even-money underdogs at home. Jarry is playing with a lot of confidence right now, and Pittsburgh won eight of its past nine home games against Boston.

Against the spread (ATS)

The Penguins +1.5 (-275) will cost you nearly three times your potential return, and that’s just not a good play. If you like the Pens, just play them straight up as home underdogs.

AVOID.

Over/Under (O/U)

UNDER 5.5 (-110) is the best play on the board in this game. The teams just played to a 1-0 score, and Rask and Jarry won’t cough up a ton of goals.

The Bruins saw their six-game win streak come to a surprising halt when they lost at the Buffalo Sabres 6-4 in the finale of a three-game set.

It was yet another cautionary tale on why you never bet huge money line favorites straight up as Boston failed at -310. If you bet the B’s in the first two wins, you would still be in the red at -110 despite a 2-1 betting record.

The Penguins enter on a three-game win streak after sweeping the visiting New Jersey Devils in three straight while outscoring them 16-9.

Jeremy Swayman (5-1-0, 1.65 GAA, .943 SV%, 1 SO) vs. Tristan Jarry (20-8-3, 2.79 GAA, .908 SV%)

Swayman, who is confirmed to start, is being kept around in a three-goalie rotation of sorts. He enters with three straight wins and has two or fewer goals allowed in five of his six starts this season, emerging as the goalie of the future in Beantown.

Jarry was ice-cold to start the season, but he has picked up the pace significantly. In fact, he hasn’t lost back-to-back starts in regulation since Jan. 28-Feb. 6 in a two-game stretch on the road against the Bruins and New York Islanders.

“Jar Jar Wins” is 1-1-1 with a 2.60 GAA and .919 SV% in three starts against the B’s this season.

The Penguins +1.5 (-275) aren’t worth playing on the puck line as you need to risk almost three times your potential return, and there is no sense in doing that. If you like the Penguins, just take them straight up.

The UNDER 5.5 (+100) is even money and a value play based on the recent production of both backstops in this game. Swayman has yielded two or fewer goals in five of six, and Jarry has coughed up two or fewer goals in five of his past six appearances.

Vladar, a third-round pick of the 2015 NHL Entry Draft, is set to make his first NHL start and just his second appearance after allowing 3 goals on 15 shots in one game last season. Jaroslav Halak started and took the loss Monday, and Tuukka Rask (back) remains sidelined by injury.

DeSmith has won two straight outings and three of his last four games, including a 24-save shutout victory over the Buffalo Sabres Saturday. He has stopped 75 of 78 shots in three games since Feb. 28, but his best performances this season have been on the road.

The PENGUINS (-120) are a fine play coming off Monday’s 3-goal win.

Boston opened the scoring but Pittsburgh went up 2-1 by the end of the first period, added a power-play marker in the second frame and finished things off with a late empty-netter. Boston registered 59.55% of the 5-on-5 shot attempts Monday but scoring chances at full strength were split 50-50.

Most importantly, the Bruins will be turning to an inexperienced goaltender for their second road game in two days. Expect Penguins Cs Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin to give him a rude welcome.

Against the spread (ATS)

PASS on the puck line with only a slight lean to Penguins -1.5 (+225). It took special teams play and an ENG to secure the multi-goal win and puck line cover Monday.

DeSmith has been hot of late, but he was prone to some bad goals early in the season.

Over/Under (O/U)

The OVER 5.5 (-120) is the top bet for this game.

Both teams have lengthy injury reports mainly consisting of defensemen. Add in tired legs, a growing sense of desperation for Boston and Vladar’s first NHL start, and it adds up to 6-plus goals fairly quickly.
