Tim Banks named finalist for Broyles Award

Tim Banks becomes second Tennessee assistant coach under Josh Heupel to be named Broyles Award Finalist.

Tennessee defensive coordinator Tim Banks was named one of five finalists for the Broyles Award, announced by The Frank and Barbara Broyles Foundation.

The award was created in 1996, recognizing coach Frank Broyles’ legacy of selecting and developing great assistant coaches during his hall-of-fame career as head coach at Arkansas.

The Broyles Award selection process includes the Football Writers Association of America, broadcasters, a college football hall-of-fame selection committee and current college head coaches.

Banks, who is in his 18th season as an FBS defensive coordinator, and his fourth with the Vols, is one of two SEC assistants announced as semifinalists. Banks joins Texas’ Pete Kwiatkowski on the list. Other candidates are Arizona State’s Marcus Arroyo, Indiana’s Bryant Haines and Notre Dame’s Al Golden.

Banks is the second assistant coach to be named a Broyles Award finalist during Josh Heupel’s tenure as head coach at Tennessee. Former offensive coordinator and current South Florida head coach Alex Golesh was recognized as a semifinalist in 2022.

Notre Dame defensive coordinator makes final cut for Broyles Award

Way to go, Al!

Notre Dame wouldn’t have made the College Football Playoff without its defense. That wouldn’t be possible without a solid defensive coordinator in [autotag]Al Golden[/autotag].

The Irish bet big on Golden by signing him to a four-year contract extension in the offseason. Golden has rewarded their faith and then some.

Now, Golden could be recognized nationally for his work as he has been named one of five finalists for the Broyles Award, which is given to the best assistant coach in college football. The winner will be announced at a ceremony Feb. 13.

Broyles fellow finalists also helped their teams make the playoff. Arizona State’s Marcus Arroyo is the only offensive coordinator who made the cut. The rest, all defensive coordinators, are Indiana’s Bryant Haines, Tennessee’s Tim Banks and Texas’ Pete Kwiatkowski.

Golden would be the second Irish assistant coach to win this award, joining [autotag]Bob Diaco[/autotag] in 2012. Let’s hope that comes to pass.

Florida running backs coach nominated for Broyles Award

Florida running back coach is being recognized as one of the best assistants in college football with a Broyles Award nomination.

Florida’s running back room has consistently produced for the past three years under position coach [autotag]Jabbar Juluke[/autotag] and now he’s being recognized as one of the nation’s top assistants.

On Tuesday, Juluke was nominated for the Broyles Award, which honors college football’s top assistant coaches. He’s one of 65 nominees in the class, selected out of approximately 1,500 coaches across 131 FBS programs.

“The Broyles Award selection process includes the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA), broadcasters, a college football hall-of-fame selection committee, and current college head coaches,” according to the Frank and Barbara Broyles Foundation official website.

Two former Florida coaches have finished as finalists for the award — defensive coordinator and defensive line coach Dan Quinn in 2012 and wide receivers coach Dwayne Dixon in 2001.

Jabbar Juluke at Florida

Juluke followed Billy Napier to Florida after four years on his staff at Louisiana. Under Juluke, Florida has produced 11 200-yard rushing games, and his 2024 position room has combined for more than 1,500 yards and 20 total touchdowns.

He recruited both Montrell Johnson Jr. and Trevor Etienne, one of 15 running back duos to rush for more than 700 yards apiece in 2022. His latest success story is four-star freshman Jadan Baugh, who has led the position room with 522 yards and seven touchdowns while Johnson battles injuries.

Johnson is still on pace to eclipse 500 yards with 494 on the year and two more games to play. Junior college transfer Ja’Kobi Jackson has also contributed greatly with 401 yards and six touchdowns. Both Jackson and Johnson are averaging 5.5 yards per carry, which would rank inside the top 50 nationally with more touches.

Frank and Barbara Broyles

John Franklin Broyles was a head football coach at both the University of Missouri (1957) and the University of Arkansas (1958-76) before transitioning into the athletic director role at Arkansas from 1974 to 2007.

More than 30 of his former players have gone on to coach in college or professional football, including five national championship winners — Hayden Fry, Joe Gibbs, Jimmy Johnson, Johnny Majors and Barry Switzer. Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones played on Broyles’ 1964 national championship team at Arkansas.

His foundation, also named after his wife Barbara, aims to support caregivers of Alzheimer’s patients. Barbara was diagnosed with the disease in 2005 and Frank succumbed to complications of Alzheimer’s in August 2017. The Coach Broyles’ Playbook for Alzheimer’s Caregivers has been translated into 11 languages and is distributed electronically across the world.

Duke defensive coordinator Jonathan Patke named a Broyles Award nominee

Duke defensive coordinator Jonahtan Patke was one of 65 assistant coaches nominated for the Broyles Award on Tuesday.

Duke defensive coordinator Jonathan Patke was one of 65 assistant coaches nominated for the Broyles Award on Tuesday afternoon.

The trophy is given to the nation’s best assistant coach each season, and Patke’s work in his first year with the Blue Devils deserves commendation.

Through 11 games this season, the Blue Devils have racked up 99 tackles for loss (second among FBS defenses), 25 turnovers (also second), and 36 sacks (fifth) while allowing 6.0 yards per pass attempt (14th). Miami quarterback Cam Ward, a seasonlong contender for the Heisman Trophy, was the only quarterback to throw for more than 258 yards against Patke’s squad, and the Blue Devils nearly ended the season with as many interceptions (12) as touchdowns allowed (14).

The Blue Devils allowed 22.6 points per game this season, fifth-fewest in the ACC, and held seven of their first 11 opponents to 21 points or fewer.

Patke spent four years as [autotag]Manny Diaz[/autotag]’s linebackers coach with the Miami Hurricanes from 2018-21 before heading to Incarnate Word to coordinate the Cardinals’ defense. He spent one season there and one season in the same role at Texas State before rejoining Diaz in Durham.

Notre Dame defensive coordinator Al Golden nominated for Broyles Award

Congrats, Al!

The coaching ranks within Notre Dame have churned out some prominent names over the years. [autotag]Al Golden[/autotag]’s coaching career already was decades old when he was hired as [autotag]Marcus Freeman[/autotag]’s defensive coordinator in 2022. Fast forward to 2024, and the Irish have one of the best defenses in college football.

So it’s only fitting that the man behind that dominant defense be up for an award. Sure enough, Golden has been named one of 65 nominees for the Broyles Award, which is presented every year to college football’s best assistant coach. A Golden victory would be the second for the Irish and second for one of their defensive coordinators after [autotag]Bob Diaco[/autotag] in 2012.

Golden has a long way to go before he can start making space in his trophy case. He’s up against a large field, so the list eventually will be cut to 15 semifinalists and then five finalists before a winner is named. In the meantime, here’s Golden speaking about the Irish’s upcoming game with USC:

Here’s hoping the Irish prove again how fruitful being a coach for them can be.

The Broyles Award is presented annually to the top assistant coach in college football.

“Phil Parker is an incredible football coach, and I am extremely pleased that he has been recognized for his career success by the Broyles Committee,” Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz said. “We simply would not have achieved the success we have as a program without Phil’s dedication and leadership. He is one of a kind, and I am so happy that he has been by my side in this program throughout the past 25 years.”

No. 23 Tennessee (8-4, 4-4 SEC) will play No. 17 Iowa (10-3, 7-2 Big Ten) in the Cheez-It Citrus Bowl on Jan. 1, 2024.
