RB Nick Chubb, DE Myles Garrett among injured Browns back at practice

The bye week helped ease a lot of Browns injuries

Monday marked the first time the Cleveland Browns got together for a practice since last Wednesday. The time off during the bye weekend did the Browns’ walking wounded some good.

Several players who have been sidelined or battling through injuries were back at practice. Most notable is the return of Pro Bowl RB Nick Chubb, who was designated for return from I.R. by the club and practiced without restrictions for the first time since Week 4.

Defensive end Myles Garrett was also back. Garrett injured his knee in the Week 8 loss to the Raiders. So was right guard Wyatt Teller, who has been sorely missed in the run game since suffering a strained calf in Week 4.

Also back were top wide receiver Jarvis Landry, fullback Andy Janovich and rookie LB Jacob Phillips. None of those players participated in the Browns last pre-bye practice.

Browns designate RB Nick Chubb for return from I.R.

Chubb has been out since Week 4 with a knee injury

It’s largely a procedural move, but the Cleveland Browns have officially designated running back Nick Chubb for return from the injured reserve list.

Chubb has been on the I.R. since after Week 4, when he injured his knee in the team’s win over Dallas. His MCL sprain did not require surgery. Chubb can now begin to practice with the team, and they have up to 21 days to activate him back to the active 53-man roster. Because he’s not yet on the active roster, no other player has been released.

The timeline matches the original diagnosis of a four-to-six week injury. Thanks to the bye week, Chubb has only missed three full games. He could be activated in time to play on Sunday against the visiting Houston Texans.

Report: Browns ‘hopeful’ Nick Chubb will return in Week 10

Chubb has been on I.R. since getting hurt in Week 4

Sunday morning’s news cycle provided quite the swing on the emotional pendulum for the Cleveland Browns. The upswing is a potentially great one: Nick Chubb is poised to return in Week 10, according to a report from NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport.

The Pro Bowl running back has missed the last four games with a knee injury. Chubb has rested and rehabilitated his sprained MCL enough that the team is hopeful he will return to practice after the bye week. If all goes well in practices, Chubb should be back out on the field when the Browns host the Texans in Week 10.

Chubb posted 335 yards on 57 carries, a 5.9 yards per carry average. He was third in the NFL in rushing when he went down.

Rapoport’s report comes on the heels of the Browns officially placing starting QB Baker Mayfield on the reserve/COVID-19 list. Mayfield came into close contact with a Browns staffer who tested positive, but the QB did not test positive himself.

TE Austin Hooper returned to Browns practice

Hooper should be fine to play in Week 10 when the Browns host the Texans

The Browns are on a bye, with players and coaches dismissed from the team’s facility in Berea until Monday. However, in the final practice before adjourning for the off week, the Browns got some positive news.

Tight end Austin Hooper was indeed out on the practice field on Wednesday. It was the first time Hooper has been active in practice since undergoing an emergency appendectomy prior to Week 7. He should be fine to play against the Texans in Week 10.

Hooper has been a hit in his first season in Cleveland. He has 22 receptions for 205 yards and a touchdown in six games, looking more integral in the passing offense by the week.

TE Austin Hooper ‘will definitely be back’ after the Browns’ bye week

Hooper had an emergency appendectomy prior to Week 7’s game

After missing the last two games with appendicitis, Browns tight end Austin Hooper will be back in Week 10.

Head coach Kevin Stefanski made it clear the big tight end would be back in the lineup when the Browns host the Texans in Week 10, following Cleveland’s bye week.

“Hooper will definitely be back for the next ballgame,” Stefanski said in his Monday press conference.

Hooper underwent an emergency appendectomy the Friday before Cleveland’s Week 7 trip to Cincinnati. His recovery has progressed without issue.

Harrison Bryant took over the top TE role in his absence, with David Njoku also seeing a spike in playing time in the last two games.

Myles Garrett expected to return after the Browns bye week

Myles Garrett expected to return after the Browns bye week with his knee injury

The Browns got some good news on the injury front with star defensive end Myles Garrett. An MRI on Monday showed no structural damage to Garrett’s injured knee.

Garrett suffered what was termed a knee contusion during Sunday’s loss to the Las Vegas Raiders. He missed more than half of the team’s snaps and was largely ineffective when he did play through the pain.

Coach Kevin Stefanski relayed the good news in a conference call with reporters. He noted Garrett will return on Wednesday for further evaluation. The Browns are off on Tuesday and do not play in Week 9.

“We dodged a bullet,” Stefanski said of Garrett’s injury. “We just need him to come back Wednesday and see if he’s ready to practice. If he’s not, we’ll have a few days to rest and get ready to roll next week.”

Browns final injury report for Week 8: Myles Garrett good to go, 3 players out

Browns final injury report for Week 8: 3 players out, Myles Garrett good to go

Myles Garrett will be in uniform and in hot pursuit of adding to NFL-leading sack total against the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday. Garrett returned to Cleveland Browns practice on Friday after missing two days while nursing an ankle injury.

Coach Kevin Stefanski indicated Garrett will not carry an injury designation for the Week 8 visit from the Raiders.

The news isn’t so great for three other Browns. Tight end Austin Hooper (appendicitis), linebacker Jacob Phillips (knee) and right guard Wyatt Teller (calf) will all miss the game due to their injuries.

No other Browns players have any injury designation, so there are no game-day questionable decisions this week.

Browns injury update: Myles Garrett sits again, Wyatt Teller still out

Coach Stefanski still expects Garrett to play vs. Las Vegas

Thursday’s Browns practice saw the reigning AFC Defensive Player of the Month sitting out with a minor ankle injury. Myles Garrett continues to nurse an ankle he “tweaked” during the win over the Bengals in Week 7.

Garrett sat out for a second consecutive practice, a decision head coach Kevin Stefanski once again deemed precautionary and nothing more. The steady rain and sloppy field conditions at the practice facility played a role in the decision.

“(Garrett’s) not going to practice today. We’re outside, so just want to be cautious,” Stefanski said before Thursday’s practice. “He’ll get some work done inside.”

Also sitting out the practice session:

  • TE Austin Hooper (appendectomy)
  • RG Wyatt Teller (calf)
  • LB Jacob Phillips (knee)

Teller’s availability for Sunday’s game against the Raiders appears quite doubtful. He has not practiced since being labeled “week to week” by Stefanski following his calf injury in Week 5. With the Browns hitting the by week after Sunday’s game, it would be surprising to see Teller rushed back.

Center JC Tretter returned to practice after missing Wednesday’s session with a knee injury.

Myles Garrett held out of practice as Browns are ‘just being cautious’

Garrett sat out Wednesday’s practice for precautionary reasons

Myles Garrett did not practice on Wednesday. Before your stress eat a small animal, take heed of Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski and his explanation for why Garrett sat out the session.

“Just being cautious,” Stefanski said in his press conference Wednesday. “I’d expect that [Garrett returns Thursday], but we’ll gather more information and know more later in the week.”

Garrett was listed as missing the practice with an ankle injury. After playing 70 snaps on Sunday, it’s understandable Garrett has some need for rest and rehab in advance of Sunday’s Week 8 matchup with the Las Vegas Raiders.

The Browns will have another injury update on Thursday. There is little reason to worry about Garrett unless he’s also held out of that next session.

Browns officially place WR Odell Beckham Jr. on I.R.

Beckham will miss the rest of the 2020 season with a torn ACL

[jwplayer 3HPsgOPZ]

It was more of a paperwork formality than anything dramatic or unexpected, but the Cleveland Browns made it official on Tuesday. The Browns placed wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. on the injured reserve list.

Beckham is expected to miss the rest of the 2020 season with a torn ACL in his left knee. Beckham suffered the injury on the second offensive snap in the Week 7 win over the Cincinnati Bengals when he jumped to try and make a tackle on Darius Phillips’ interception.

The team did not immediately fill Beckham’s roster spot. With the expectation that wide receiver KhaDarel Hodge could be activated off injured reserve this week, the Browns might not need to make an outside move.
