Kevin Stefanski pleased with injury rehab for Odell Beckham and Jarvis Landry

Kevin Stefanski pleased with injury rehab for Odell Beckham and Jarvis Landry

Even though he hasn’t seen them in person in over a month, Cleveland Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski remains quite pleased with the injury rehabilitation progress from starting wide receivers Odell Beckham Jr. and Jarvis Landry.

Stefanski addressed their injury status with one of the first questions in his conference call with reporters on Thursday.

“Both are exactly where they need to be in terms of rehab progression,” Stefanski stated. “They were in the building quite a bit in January and February. They’re doing everything they need to do and they’re right where they need to be from a rehab standpoint.”

Beckham is recovering from what is commonly referred to as sports hernia surgery. Landry had a broken sacrum surgically repaired in February as well. Both Browns wideouts played through their injuries throughout the 2019 season.

Jarvis Landry opts for hip surgery, expects full recovery by 2020 kickoff

Landry revealed the news in an Instagram post

Cleveland Browns wide receiver Jarvis Landry announced he did have surgery on his hip after all. In an Instagram post, Landry revealed he had surgery to fix his injured hip on Feb. 4th in Minneapolis.

In the post, Landry’s doctor talked about the extent of the injury and the procedure. He noted Landry has “a really good looking hip joint”. The doctor also showed x-rays of the before-and-after with the surgery that highlights exactly what got fixed.

Landry battled through the injury all season, playing through the pain well enough to earn a Pro Bowl berth. It was at the Pro Bowl where Landry realized the pain was too much, and he opted to have the surgery despite previously stating he would eschew any procedure.

A Browns spokesman later added that the team expects Landry to be fully recovered by the start of the 2020 season and that the veteran wideout could be back for training camp in July. That meshes with the rehab plan and comments from Landry’s post, too.

Olivier Vernon back at Browns practice for 1st time since Week 9

Starting DE Olivier Vernon practiced on a limited basis on Wednesday for the 1st time since injuring his knee in the Browns loss in Week 9

Wednesday’s practice session in Berea gave Browns fans a little something to be thankful for on Thanksgiving eve. Starting defensive end Olivier Vernon was back on the practice field, working out with the team for the first time in nearly a month.

Vernon has not practiced since injuring his knee near the end of the team’s Week 9 loss in Denver. The veteran pass rusher still isn’t back in full; Vernon was a limited participant. But it’s a step in the right direction to getting back on the field on Sundays for Vernon.

Chad Thomas and Bryan Cox played extensively in last week’s win over Miami in his absence. Sheldon Richardson also played more at end to help fill the void left by Vernon’s injury and Myles Garrett’s initial game missed due to suspension.

David Njoku still not ready, will miss Week 12 vs. Dolphins

Browns TE David Njoku is still not ready to play despite being designated for return from I.R. and will miss Week 12 vs. Dolphins

There was some hope David Njoku could return to the Browns’ active roster in Week 12. The team designated Njoku for return from injured reserve this week, and the tight end was active in practices toward the end of the week.

However, Njoku will not be activated for the Week 12 visit from the Miami Dolphins. The Browns decided Njoku just wasn’t game-ready yet. He has been out since breaking his wrist and suffering a concussion in the Week 2 win over the New York Jets.

“I think we want to see David another week and see what we get at the end of next week,” head coach Freddie Kitchens said on Friday.

The team has two more weeks to decide to fully activate Njoku or keep him on injured reserve.

Browns injury update: Olivier Vernon, Eric Murray still not practicing

The Browns could be without 3 starters on the DL vs. Miami

Already down two starters on the defensive line due to suspensions, the Browns could also be without starting DE Olivier Vernon for a third straight week.

Vernon missed Thursday’s practice session in Berea. He has been out since injuring his knee near the end of the loss to Denver in Week 9. It’s hard to envision Vernon playing against Miami on Sunday in FirstEnergy Stadium if he doesn’t return to at least limited duty in Friday’s final practice session.

If Vernon can’t go, the starting EDGEs figure to be Chad Thomas and Chris Smith, with Bryan Cox Jr. as the only healthy reserve currently on the active roster.

Defensive back Eric Murray also remains sidelined with a knee injury of his own. Murray has also missed the last two games.

They were the only two Browns players who did not participate on even a limited basis in Thursday’s practice.

David Njoku designated for return from I.R., back at practice

Njoku could be activated this week if he proves in practice he’s ready to roll

Good news on the injury front. Browns tight end David Njoku is back at practice and has been designated for return from injured reserve.

Coach Freddie Kitchens made that declaration during his meeting with the media on Wednesday. Per Kitchens, Njoku has been cleared for full contact and will be a full participant in the practice sessions leading into the Week 12 visit from the Miami Dolphins.

Njoku has been on I.R. since suffering a broken wrist and a concussion in the Week 2 win over the New York Jets. He eschewed surgery on the wrist with an eye towards returning after missing the mandatory eight games.

The Browns have up to three weeks to activate Njoku from I.R. now that he has been designated to return. They could do so as soon as this week, and with Larry Ogunjobi on suspension and Morgan Burnett now on I.R. they have the open roster space to activate Njoku immediately.

Browns officially place Morgan Burnett on injured reserve

Morgan Burnett’s 2019 season with the Cleveland Browns is now officially over. The Browns placed the starting safety on injured reserve on Tuesday with his torn Achilles tendon.

Burnett suffered the injury in the second quarter of Thursday night’s 21-7 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers. He was having a great game against his former team, notching an interception and a tackle for loss among his five total stops.

His first season in Cleveland ends with 41 total tackles, two sacks, one interception and four TFLs. He has one year remaining on the 2-year, $7.5 million contract he signed as a free agent this offseason.

Browns injury update: Morgan Burnett out with an Achilles injury

Burnett left the Browns game against the Steelers before halftime with an Achilles injury

Morgan Burnett was in the midst of a fantastic game in Week 11. Facing his old team, the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Browns safety had an interception, a tackle-for-loss and five total tackles in the first half.

Unfortunately, his night — and almost certainly his 2019 season — is over. Burnett suffered a lower leg injury late in the first half and limped off to the locker room. He was diagnosed with an Achilles injury and will not return.

It’s a blow to the Browns defense, which has rotated players in and out all season due to injuries. Burnett has been initially replaced in the lineup by Juston Burris.

Olivier Vernon officially ruled out for Week 11

Expect more of Chad Thomas, who played well vs. Buffalo

The Browns defense will once again be without a key contributor when the Pittsburgh Steelers visit FirstEnergy Stadium on Thursday night. Starting defensive end Olivier Vernon has been ruled out for the Week 11 game with his lingering knee injury.

Vernon suffered the injury at the end of the Week 9 loss to the Denver Broncos. He missed Sunday’s win over the Buffalo Bills, replaced in the lineup by Chad Thomas. The second-year end played well, containing Josh Allen’s running and notching a sack. Expect more of Thomas against Pittsburgh and the less-mobile Mason Rudolph at QB.

The only other Browns player ruled out is defensive back Eric Murray, who is also battling a knee injury. Like Vernon, Murray did not practice all week.

Olivier Vernon, Eric Murray still out from Browns practice

The quick turnaround doesn’t give much time to heal for the injured Browns

The short week leading into the Thursday night game at FirstEnergy Stadium doesn’t give the Cleveland Browns much time to lick any wounds from last week. Tuesday’s walkthrough (in lieu of a full practice) saw both DE Olivier Vernon and CB Eric Murray still out from the session.

Vernon and Murray both missed the Week 10 win over the Buffalo Bills with knee injuries. With just one more practice before the game, it seems unlikely either will play against Pittsburgh on Thursday. Coach Freddie Kitchens seemed more optimistic on Vernon than Murray, however.

The only other player with a limited status listing is tight end Ricky Seals-Jones. He also missed Week 10 with a knee injury. Kitchens termed Seals-Jones as “probably a game time decision” in his press address.
