New Orleans Saints game previews: Week 11 vs. Cleveland Browns

New Orleans Saints game previews: Week 11 sends the Saints into their bye week after hosting the Cleveland Browns

It’s been a while since the Cleveland Browns visited the New Orleans Saints at the Caesars Superdome. Of the 46 Saints players who were active for that last meeting in 2018, only seven remain on the roster in 2024.

And this game is all that stands between the Saints and a much-needed breather during their Week 12 bye. But there’s the catch — the Browns will be well-rested for this game, having enjoyed their own bye week before making the trip down to New Orleans.

The Saints have won each of their last two games against the Browns, including the 2018 matchup we mentioned earlier and a snowbound 2022 game in Cleveland. Will they make it three in a row? The Browns own a 13-6 lead against the Saints since their first meeting in 1967, and they won five of their last six games with New Orleans before that 2018 defeat, so the Saints can’t let some recent success go to their head.

This might be the year Deshaun Watson finishes knocking off the rust. The Browns won a bidding war with the Saints for Watson’s services back in 2022, Dennis Allen’s first year as head coach, but he hasn’t found much success. He’s missed time with injuries and a suspension and wasn’t available for their loss to the Houston Texans in January’s playoffs, so he has a lot to prove. This midseason game could be a real now-or-never moment with the playoff fields taking shape.

But that’s also true for Allen and the Saints, who haven’t reached the postseason either. Going into the bye week with a win would mean a lot to a Saints team many outside observers are already writing off for 2024.

Seahawks announce dates and times for 2024 preseason schedule

Here’s the info for the trio of August exhibition games:

The Seattle Seahawks have finalized the dates and times for the three preseason games on their 2024 schedule.

Here’s the info for the trio of August exhibition games:

  • Week 1 at Los Angeles Chargers: Saturday, Aug. 10 – 4:05 p.m PT
  • Week 2 at Tennessee Titans: Saturday, Aug. 17 – 4:00 p.m. PT
  • Week 3 vs. Cleveland Browns: Saturday, Aug. 24 – 7:00 p.m. PT

The most significant matchup in the three is likely to be Week 2 against the Titans. While the first and final preseason games are generally reserved for sorting out the bottom end of the 53-man roster, the second week of the preseason is now typically the “dress rehearsal” type game for most teams, meaning starters get more snaps – usually around the entire first half. Seattle beat Tennesse 20-17 this past season.

Saints will play two teams coming off of bye weeks in 2024

The New Orleans Saints will play two teams coming off of bye weeks in 2024:

NFL teams always want more time to prepare for their next game, but the inverse is also true — it’s frustrating whenever an opposing team is getting more time to rest and plan for them. Fortunately for the New Orleans Saints, they’ll be playing just two teams coming off of bye week breaks in 2024. And both of those matchups are scheduled for kickoff at the Caesars Superdome.

The Cleveland Browns will be off in Week 10 before traveling to New Orleans in Week 11; last year, Cleveland limped into the playoffs with an 11-6 record after injuries sidelined starting quarterback Deshaun Watson and running back Nick Chubb, only to get shellacked by the Houston Texans in the wild card round. The Browns have built a playoffs-ready roster with plenty of talent on both sides of the ball.

As for the Washington Commanders? They’re visiting the Saints in Week 15 after resting during their Week 14 bye. Few teams have experienced as much turnover as Washington this offseason. They only won four games last season before cleaning house in the front office and on their coaching staff. They’re a bit of a wild card themselves with all these new pieces, including head coach Dan Quinn and rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels, but the Saints can’t take them lightly.

What about the Saints themselves? Their bye week this year is in Week 12, and they’ll come out of it hosting the same Los Angeles Rams team that embarrassed them last December. Head coach Dennis Alllen and his staff must come up with a better game plan than we saw last year, and they’ll have plenty of time to do so before this rematch in New Orleans.

Saints won’t face either the Cowboys or Browns in Week 1

The Saints are scheduled to play both the Cowboys and Browns in 2024, but they won’t see either of those teams in Week 1. Tom Brady will:

Who knew the NFL could turn something as mundane as a schedule release into a weeklong media event? The New Orleans Saints are scheduled to play both the Dallas Cowboys (away) and Cleveland Browns (at home) in 2024, but they won’t see either of those teams in Week 1. But Tom Brady will, and FOX Sports is expecting quite a crowd.

FOX Sports’ Michael Strahan announced Monday that Brady will be on the call for his first game in the booth, with the Cowboys visiting the Browns in Week 1. Kickoff is scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 8 at 3:25 p.m. CT. Brady is making his broadcasting debut after inking an unprecedented $375 million contract with FOX Sports before he even finished his playing career.

So we’re still waiting to see who the Saints will kick off their season with. With earlier slots on Thursday and Friday being filled by high-profile matchups (including other Saints opponents this year like the Kansas City Chiefs, Green Bay Packers and Philadelphia Eagles), it’s looking like the Saints will start their season either on Sunday, Sept. 8 or Monday, Sept. 9. You can find their full list of opponents here, with the 2024 schedule release airing on Wednesday, May 15. Stay tuned for updates as more information becomes available.

Steelers stuck in the middle of the pack in latest ESPN NFL power rankings

Despite a productive offseason, the Steelers dropped in the latest ESPN NFL power rankings.

Few teams have put in more work this offseason than the Pittsburgh Steelers. The front office completely rebuilt the quarterback depth chart and added serious talent on the offensive line. Nevertheless, the rest of the league has worked on getting better as well.

ESPN put out its latest NFL power rankings after the NFL draft and despite all that work, they dropped the Steelers two spots from 13 to 15. Here’s what they had to say about the Steelers from writer Brooke Pryor:

It’s tempting to go with the offensive line here, but the veteran quarterback additions eke out the rookie offensive linemen. Russell Wilson threw for 26 touchdowns to eight interceptions a year ago, while a combination of Kenny Pickett, Mitchell Trubisky and Mason Rudolph threw 13 touchdowns to nine interceptions. At the very least, Wilson and Justin Fields should offer a mixture of more stability and a higher ceiling at the position — especially in a run-first, play-action heavy offense that plays to their strengths.

Among the AFC North, ESPN has Pittsburgh as the lowest-ranked with even the Cleveland Browns coming in at No. 12, The Baltimore Ravens checking in at No. 3 and the Cincinnati Bengals are No. 9.

Former NFL DE Aaron Lynch participating in Dolphins rookie minicamp

Aaron Lynch hasn’t appeared in an NFL game since 2020, but is attempting a comeback.

Aaron Lynch hasn’t appeared in an NFL game since the 2020 season, but the twice-retired pass rusher is attempting a comeback and will participate on a tryout basis at the Miami Dolphins’ rookie minicamp.

Lynch, 31, began his NFL career with the San Francisco 49ers as a fifth-round pick in the 2014 NFL draft. After recording 15 sacks in four seasons, Lynch signed with the Chicago Bears as a free agent in 2018. He recorded five sacks in two seasons with the team and joined the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2020.

During training camp with the Jaguars, Lynch announced his retirement, but made his return just two months later and recorded one sack in eight games with the team.

Since then, Lynch has been out of the league. However, he kicked off his comeback efforts earlier this year with a March tryout with the Cleveland Browns.

Now he’s set to be the only veteran participant in the Dolphins’ rookie minicamp, which will begin Friday.

Lynch, who was listed by the Jaguars as a 6’5, 285-pound defensive end in 2020, is a linebacker on the Dolphins’ rookie minicamp roster and listed at 6’5, 260 pounds.

NFL teases upcoming 2024 schedule release with a hype video

We’re about 7-14 days away from the 2024 NFL schedule reveal, and the league is helping build the hype by releasing a video teasing the looming matchups.

The Bengals, Ravens, and Rams highlight the Eagles’ 2024 opponents list, and we already know that Philadelphia will open up in Brazil against the Green Bay Packers.

There’s a cycle of inter-conference faceoffs; each NFC division rotates through each AFC division every four seasons and the other NFC divisions every three seasons.

In addition, where a team finishes within their division dictates a same-finish matchup with one team from the opposite conference and whichever divisions aren’t in the rotation for that season.

Philadelphia previously had one of the more difficult schedules over the past two years, but 2024 will see the Eagles among the top ten easiest schedules based on win-loss percentages from last year.
