Bearden baseball player Brooks Wright details his decision to play for the Vols.
Tennessee baseball signee Brooks Wright discussed signing with the Vols at the first annual East Tennessee Baseball Coaches Media Day.
The event took place Wednesday at Dick’s House of Sport in Knoxville.
Wright signed with Tennessee on Feb. 7. He committed to play for the Vols in 2020 while in eighth grade.
“It was a dream come true,” Wright said. “I just always wanted to play for the Vols. I’ve always been a guy that wanted to stay close to home.”
Wright said his decision to play for his hometown school was not based on Tennessee’s recent success.
“I wanted to play there when I was a kid and I remember going there, and I remember going to games over there when they weren’t very good,” Wright said. “They really weren’t very good until coach (Tony Vitello) got there, and he got there in 2018.”
The 2024 prospect is from Bearden High School in Knoxville, Tennessee. He played catcher, first base and pitcher at Bearden.
As a junior in 2023, Wright recorded a .415 batting average, six home runs, 26 RBIs, 10 doubles and 34 walks.
He also surrendered 12 stolen bases in 155 innings last season.
Wright enters his senior campaign at Bearden in 2024. He started for three seasons and was the District 4-4A Defensive Player of the Year as a junior.
Two Tennessee baseball commits have been named All-State by the Tennessee Baseball Coaches Association.
Brooks Wright (Bearden High School, Knoxville Tennessee), a sophomore pitcher, catcher and first baseman, was named to the TBCA’s Division I Class 4A All-State team.
Bearden reached the district tournament championship game after finishing sixth in the regular season standings. The Bulldogs lost to eventual state champion Farragut.
Daniel Parris, a pitcher and infielder for Catholic High School (Knoxville, Tennessee) helped the Fighting Irish reach the Division II-AA state tournament in Lebanon, Tennessee.
Catholic was eliminated by Lipscomb Academy, 11-3.
Parris pitched a two-hit shutout in the semifinals and went 2-for-8 with a home run in the tournament.
KNOXVILLE — The coronavirus pandemic might have brought the University of Tennessee’s 2020 baseball season to a premature end, but recruiting never stops and the Volunteers secured a verbal commitment from an up-and-coming high school star.
Bearden High School’s Brooks Wright announced his intentions to play for the Vols upon graduating in 2024.
Wright is a Perfect Game All-American and is a two-way player. He plays catcher when not on the mound.
The Vols were 15-2 when the Southeastern Conference and the University of Tennessee canceled the remaining games of the 2020 campaign.
The Vols returned to national prominence in 2019, going 40-21 and making their first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2005.
