Utah Jazz at Brooklyn Nets odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Tuesday’s Utah Jazz at Brooklyn Nets NBA betting odds and lines, with basketball picks, tips and predictions.

The Brooklyn Nets (3-4) host the Utah Jazz (4-2) Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. ET at Barclays Center. Below, we analyze the Jazz-Nets NBA betting odds and lines, with picks and predictions.

Utah crushed the San Antonio Spurs 130-109 on the road Sunday, thanks to some red-hot shooting. The Jazz shot 55.1% from the field and made 21-of-41 3-pointers while the Spurs made just 6-of-19 from behind the arc. Jazz SF Bojan Bogdanovic—who missed the playoff last year due to a season-ending injury—scored a game-high 28 points and hit 6-of-7 threes.

After winning their first two games in spectacular fashion, the Nets have lost four of their last five including a 123-122 loss to the Washington Wizards as 7.5-point home favorites Sunday. Brooklyn was careless with the ball—turning it over 20 times—and had less of an interior presence than Washington; the Nets were outrebounded 59-55 and scored 12 fewer points in the paint.

The Jazz won both regular-season meetings last year but covered the spread only once and the Over cashed in each contest.

Jazz at Nets: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Jazz 121, Nets 110

Money line (ML)

PASS ON THE MONEY LINE. It’s too expensive to bet Utah straight up and there’s not even another money line I’d put in a parlay with the Jazz (-210).

Against the spread (ATS)

Utah and Brooklyn will have essentially the same rosters on the floor as last year when these teams played but the major difference is the Nets moving on from former head coach Kenny Atkinson and hiring Steve Nash. It’s still TBD if Nash can coach but Jazz head coach Quin Snyder is a sleeper contender for Coach of the Year.

Not only is Brooklyn missing an MVP favorite in Durant but the absence of Dinwiddie also hurts a Nets team whose strength is depth. Dinwiddie was Brooklyn’s second-leading scorer in both of its games against the Jazz last season.

Also, there isn’t a matchup the Nets win in my opinion. Sure, Irving could give it to Jazz PG Mike Conley but that’s more of an on-paper matchup as SG Donovan Mitchell is the real ball-dominant guard Irving has to compete against. I’d give Mitchell the edge over Kyrie if Jazz-Nets detours to a one-on-one game briefly.

GIMME JAZZ -4.5 (-120) for 1 unit.

Over/Under (O/U)

Utah’s opponents shooting at the third-highest clip from deep is more random than indicative of how the Jazz play defense. That being said, Brooklyn is sixth in 3-point shooting and the adjustment I could see them making against a good Utah defense and without KD is to chuck threes.

I am not crazy about it but I’ll lean OVER 226.5 (-110) for a quarter-unit.

Wizards at Nets: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Nets 129, Wizards 114

Money line (ML)

PASS ON THE MONEY LINE. I don’t have the bankroll to lay -350 for an outright Nets victory. I’d be fairly surprised if Brooklyn lost but not shocked and it’s not very sharp taking that big of a favorite in regular-season NBA action.

Against the spread (ATS)

Washington finally got a win its last time out by pasting the Minnesota Timberwolves 130-109 as a 1.5-point road favorite. The Wizards did most of their damage in the third quarter, outscoring the Timberwolves 40-14. Washington PG Russell Westbrook was inactive in the game but the team stepped up on his absence by knocking down 55.1% of its shots and notching 35 assists to Minnesota’s 17.

The Nets split a back-to-back with the Atlanta Hawks but lost the second meeting 114-96 on New’s Year Day after an exhilarating 145-141 win a couple of nights prior. Brooklyn’s offense cratered Friday as the Nets shot only 40.7% from the field, 18.9% from 3-point range and scored just 6 fast break points.

For what it’s worth, the Wizards won last year’s season series 2-1 (2-1 ATS) with the Nets winning their final meeting 118-110 as 4-point favorites in the Orlando Bubble Aug. 2. Nets PG Kyrie Irving played in only one of those games—a 113-107 Feb. 1 loss—and obviously, SF Kevin Durant didn’t suit up for Brooklyn last year.

Neither team is living up to bookmakers’ expectations—both are 2-4 ATS—but Brooklyn’s results are a little more concerning because it feels like the Nets carry themselves like a title team when they haven’t won jack.

Here’s the thing, though: Given Durant and Westbrook’s history, KD and by extension, the Nets should give a full-fledged effort. I am not saying there’s animosity there but hoopers always want to have bragging rights over basketball buddies. That’s aside from Brooklyn having way more talent and depth compared to Washington.

GIMME NETS -7.5 (-110) for 1.5 units.

Over/Under (O/U)

The whole KD-Westbrook rivalry thing works both ways and I think we see a bevy of awesome offensive performances in Wizards-Nets. Wizards SG Bradley Beal, Westbrook, Durant and Irving are all ballers and we’re getting a little value presumptively on the Nets’ offense given the stinker they just put up in their last game.

Both teams are in the top-10 in offensive efficiency and Washington is continuing last season’s trend of playing to the Over (4-2 O/U this season). The reason for all the Overs is because the Wizards can get buckets but cannot stop anyone (28th in opponent’s points per game). It’s a huge number so I’ll lean OVER 241.5 (-110) for a quarter-unit.

Atlanta Hawks at Brooklyn Nets odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Friday’s Atlanta Hawks at Brooklyn Nets NBA betting odds and lines, with basketball picks, tips and predictions.

The Atlanta Hawks (3-1) try to bounce back from a loss to the Brooklyn Nets (3-2) in the second of a back-to-back between the two teams on New Year’s Day. The tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET at Barclays Center.

The Nets outlasted the Hawks 145-141 as 5.5-point home favorites in what was the most high-octane matchup of the NBA season. Brooklyn’s Kevin Durant was spectacular as he poured in a season-high 33 points on 11-for-22 shooting with 11 rebounds and 8 assists. But a couple of the Hawks’ building blocks came to play as fourth-year PF John Collins and third-year All-Star PG Trae Young both scored 30 points in Atlanta’s loss.

Atlanta has scored 141 points in each of their previous two meetings with Brooklyn dating back to last season—both with Young in the lineup—but only scored 86 points in the first game vs. the Nets last year, which Young missed with an injury.

Below, we analyze the Hawks-Nets NBA betting odds and lines, with picks and predictions.

Hawks at Nets: Betting odds, spread and lines

Hawks at Nets: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Nets 127, Hawks 113

Money line (ML)

PASS ON THE MONEY LINE because I like the favorite but have a personal rule of not betting an NBA team in the regular season favored -150 or greater.

Against the spread (ATS)

Brooklyn’s early season troubles with controlling the glass showed itself last game when they were out-rebounded 64-45 by Atlanta. But if the Hawks don’t maintain that same tenacity on the glass, then I don’t see how they can beat the Nets Friday.

Atlanta is 27th in defensive rating, and Brooklyn is the only playoff team last year they’ve faced thus far. Plus while Hawks-Nets come into Friday’s game as first and second in points per game in the NBA, Brooklyn has a higher net in effective field-goal percentage.

BET NETS -6.5 (-110) for 1 unit.

Over/Under (O/U)

It’s easy to assume we’ll get a similar Hawks-Nets game like the one we saw Wednesday, but these teams are only a combined 3-6 O/U so far this season and it’s not like their offensive firepower is a surprise. Bookmakers have already moved this total down from a 247-point consensus opener to its current number.

From a basketball POV, I like the Nets to slow down the pace of this game and try to run some more half-court offense as a pose to getting into an up-and-down shootout with a young upstart like the Hawks. Officially, I lean UNDER 244.5 (-105) for a half-unit.

Memphis Grizzlies at Brooklyn Nets odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Monday’s Memphis Grizzlies at Brooklyn Nets NBA betting odds and lines, with basketball picks, tips and predictions.

The Brooklyn Nets (2-1) host the Memphis Grizzlies (0-2) in the second game of their back-to-back Monday at Barclays Center for a 7:30 p.m. ET tip-off. Below, we analyze the Grizzlies-Nets NBA betting odds and lines, with picks and predictions.

Grizzlies at Nets: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Grizzlies 114, Nets 109

Money line (ML)

The Nets were upset as 11-point road favorites by the Charlotte Hornets 106-104 Sunday. Durant and PG Kyrie Irving held up their end of the bargain; KD scored 29 points on 9-for-15 shooting with 4 assists while Irving had 25 points on 10-for-17 shooting and 6 assists. Brooklyn’s major issue was Charlotte feasting on the inside as the Hornets outscored the Nets 64-26 in the paint.

Memphis took a 122-112 home loss to the Atlanta Hawks as a 2.5-point favorite Saturday. The double-digit margin doesn’t indicate how close the game was but the Grizzlies did have an off-night shooting as Memphis made only 40% of its field goals and 30% of 3-pointers.

The Grizzlies won and covered the spread in both meetings with the Nets last season but it’s hard to take a lot away from those performances as Durant wasn’t playing for Brooklyn and Irving played in only the first head-to-head meeting—a 134-133 overtime win for Memphis.

Last season, Memphis led the NBA in points in the paint per game with 55.9 PPG and was 4th in fast-break points (17.2 PPG). Brooklyn was 10th in opponent’s PITP last year and didn’t have any notable bigs depart the team so the Nets’ last game could’ve been an aberration or a result of new coach Steve Nash’s game plan. The Grizzlies had a meager 44 PITP vs. the Hawks but had 66 PITP in their first game against the San Antonio Spurs last Wednesday.

Also, being as Grizzlies-Nets is part of a back-to-back for Brooklyn, KD could take a precautionary rest-day since he spent last season sidelined by injury. If Durant isn’t playing, I like the Grizzlies outright and we’re going to get an awesome price.

For now, I’ll “LEAN” GRIZZLIES (+280) for a quarter-unit with a plan to bet the spread heavier.

Against the spread (ATS)

BET GRIZZLIES +5.5 (-110) for 1.5 units. The pro-Memphis argument is in the section above and all we’re doing is making the safer/wiser play on Grizzlies plus points.

Over/Under (O/U)

PASS ON THE TOTAL.I’ve projected this game to fall short of BetMGM’s total; however, the market is betting the Over, according to Pregame.com. The market sees something I don’t, apparently, and I don’t feel like fading it.

Nets at Hornets: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Nets 119, Hornets 103

Money line (ML)

The price tag on the Nets (-375) is a little steep, costing you nearly four times your potential return. Over the long haul, playing heavy favorites is not a winning strategy. While the Hornets (+290) are winless through the first two games, you can’t back them, either.

PASS.

Against the spread (ATS)

The NETS -8.5 (-110) are worth a roll of the dice laying more than four buckets on the road. They roughed up the Celtics on Christmas Day in Beantown 123-95, and they have won each of their first two games by an average of 27.0 points per game, easily covering each.

Over/Under (O/U)

UNDER 226.5 (-110) is the way to go, as Brooklyn has held the opposition to just 97.0 PPG through the first two outings. The Hornets hit the Under Saturday in a narrow two-point loss to OKC, and Charlotte might have some tired legs after the quick turnaround.

Nets at Celtics: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Celtics 113, Nets 109

Money line (ML)

“LEAN” CELTICS (+125) for a quarter-unit to pull off an upset, but also because I like Boston plus the points. Generally, I’ll sprinkle some coin on an underdogs’ money line if I’m betting them to cover the spread. If it’s either-or, take the spread instead of the money line.

Against the spread (ATS)

The Celtics took down last season’s 1-seed Milwaukee Bucks 122-121 Wednesday in their first game of the season. It took a go-ahead, 28-foot bank 3-point shot from SF Jayson Tatum and a missed free throw by reigning NBA MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo with 0.5 seconds remaining for Boston to pull off the upset as a 4.5-point underdog.

Brooklyn put on a show in the NBA’s first game of the season and smoked the Golden State Warriors 125-99 as a 7.5-point home favorite Tuesday. PF Kevin Durant had a ho-hum 22 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists, and PG Kyrie Irving went off for 26 points on 10-for-16 shooting, 24 of which came in the first half.

The last time these teams met was in the NBA bubble back in August and they were headed in opposite directions. Boston rolled Brooklyn 149-115, but the Nets did win and cover in two of the four meetings last season.

Irving didn’t play in any of the four games against his former team and the matchup between him and Celtics PG Marcus Smart will be key. Smart is a defensive hound and is a perfect counter stylistically for Irving. If Smart can pester Irving effectively, hindering the Nets’ offense, then the Celtics should get an upset.

Finally, since 2017 (Tatum’s rookie campaign and SG Jaylen Brown’s second season), Boston is the best team against the spread at 157-117-8 ATS and it’s an NBA-best 16-3 ATS with an 8.8-point ATS margin as a home underdog. The Celtics hold down the home court when playing good teams. It starts with coach Brad Stevens, who’s young talent has a real chance to show out this season.

BET CELTICS +3.5 (-115) for 1.5 units.

Over/Under (O/U)

PASS. There’s a lot of offensive firepower on both sides and there is a crowd-less arena so this could be a shootout.

However, it is a Christmas game, which is one of the most-hyped games of the regular season and there could be a playoff-like atmosphere. If there ever was a spot for Brooklyn’s lack of familiarity to be a factor, it would be against a Stevens coached Celtics team.
