Anonymous Lakers player has harsh words about Bronny James’ special treatment

Has the hoopla surrounding Bronny James gone too far?

Bronny James, the son of Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James, seemed to be the biggest story at the NBA’s summer league this year. He was taken by the Lakers with the No. 55 pick in last month’s draft, but for obvious reasons, he has been the most talked-about member of this year’s draft class.

He started the summer league poorly, but he played well in his last two games, which has given people hope that perhaps he can be a viable NBA player after all.

While many reports have indicated the younger James has humility and a great attitude, a report outlined some very troubling “star treatment” he received and how it affected L.A.’s summer league team (h/t Lakers Daily).

Via The U.S. Sun:

“The attention he attracted was ‘very frustrating’ for the players to see, and his alleged star treatment caused friction among the team, which went 0-5 to start the tournament, per a Lakers insider,” wrote Steve Brenner and Damian Burchardt of the US Sun.

“‘That kind of tension didn’t help the group of players to build chemistry,’ said the source, who noted they have ‘nothing against’ Bronny.

“‘And you could feel that there was no unity [between] this group of guys as Bronny was the main guy and the others didn’t feel that it was right, that he deserved that.’”

Members of the media on hand in Las Vegas scrambled to interview the younger James, but there were times they couldn’t get to him.

“Along the way, Bronny’s reps made the guard unavailable for media availability on several occasions, which the source labeled as ‘not nice’ toward his teammates and other franchise members,” wrote Brenner and Burchardt.

“‘This isn’t a good look for us,’ the insider said.

“‘And with dealing with Bronny’s attention and treatment, plenty of the other young guys that are trying to make the roster for next season couldn’t show their best side and show their A game.’”

One member of the Lakers’ summer league squad had some unflattering things to say about how much the rookie guard was prioritized, and he felt it was to the detriment of other players.

“A player who was part of the Lakers’ Summer League team confirmed that with ‘almost everything centered around Bronny,’ it was tough to enjoy hooping,” wrote Brenner and Burchardt.

“‘I mean, he was treated as someone apart, not like all of us, and that is very annoying as we didn’t feel any chemistry in this group of players,’ the player said.

“The Lakers player said that given the attention on Bronny, he didn’t feel he had the opportunity to showcase his potential.

“‘I ended up being very frustrated because I was never put in the best situation, or even put in some plays or game plans because they wanted Bronny to show his skills and shine,’ he said.

“‘If you talk to any other player that was part of the roster of the California Classic and the Summer League, most of them would tell you the same thing.’

“‘The tensions were visible, and pretty much we were all thinking about the end of the Summer League to get out of here and focus on our next step in our careers.’”

That player did make it clear, however, that all this wasn’t necessarily the younger James’ fault and that he even felt “a bit bad” for the 19-year-old. He did add, however, that “he is not ready for all this, and he isn’t ready for the NBA in my opinion.”

He also had this final comment about the whole experience.

“It was pretty much Bronny On Tour,” he said.

With almost three months to go before the start of the NBA regular season, one has to hope this friction will not continue.

Brandon Jennings: Bronny James is better than Matthew Dellavedova

Former NBA player Brandon Jennings praised Bronny James with a backhanded diss of several players and possibly entire championship teams.

Bronny James has become a very polarizing figure in the NBA before he has even played his first official game in the league, and it is all because of who his father is and the optics that situation has created.

While some see decent potential in him and have been encouraged by solid performances in his last two summer league games, others feel he’s nothing more than the product of nepotism. Clearly, it will be a while because the basketball world can accurately judge the younger James as a player.

Former NBA player Brandon Jennings said on X (formerly Twitter) that he already feels the younger James is “better than a lot of role players that played on championship teams in the NBA,” and he seemed to challenge others to name players he would take the younger James over (h/t Cavaliers Nation).

Two people mentioned Matthew Delladedova, a role player on the elder James’ Cleveland Cavaliers teams several years ago. Jennings responded by saying the younger James is better than Dellavedova while saying that other members of those Cavaliers teams were “trash.”

The elder James went to war in the 2015 NBA Finals against the Golden State Warriors with a rag-tag group of players after co-stars Kyrie Irving and Kevin Love went down with injuries. Dellavedova, who to that point had been a lackluster young guard in the NBA, had an admirable 20-point effort in Game 3 as Cleveland won to take a 2-1 series lead.

After playing heavy minutes in both Game 2 and Game 3 of the series, the Aussie was so exhausted that he had to be taken to the Cleveland Clinic to be treated for severe cramps.

The elder James tried so hard to lead Cleveland to what would’ve been the city’s first world championship in any major sport since 1964 by averaging 35.8 points, 13.3 rebounds and 8.8 assists a game in the finals. But he shot just 39.8% from the field, and the undermanned Cavs lost in six games.

Of course, he and his team got their revenge just a year later in the championship series when the Cavs overcame a 3-1 series deficit to defeat a Warriors team that had won a record 73 games.

A video breakdown of Bronny James’ summer league defense

Overall, Bronny James may be a work in progress, but his defense is already a bright spot, and he has shown good instincts in that area.

Bronny James, the No. 55 pick in last month’s draft by the Los Angeles Lakers, is clearly going to be a work in progress. His shot came and went during summer league play, and while he shot well in his last two games, one cannot expect him to be accurate right away in actual NBA games.

But the strongest aspect of his game right now, which has some scouts and Lakers head coach JJ Redick optimistic about his overall potential, is his defense. He is someone who will get after it on the defensive end.

People have expressed concern about the fact that he was measured at just 6-foot-1.5 at the scouting combine. But he does have a 40.5-inch vertical leap, as well as a robust 6-foot-7 wingspan.

Then there are his defensive instincts, which seem to be well-developed despite the fact that he is 19 years of age.

YouTube user Awful Coaching, which has spent lots of time breaking down the problems that former Lakers head coach Darvin Ham had, took the time to put together a positive video breakdown of James’ defense during summer league play.

One thing that is evident while watching this video is that James seems to know when to help or “stunt” defensively, and when to retreat back to his own defensive assignment. This is something that, when done effectively, can stymie opposing offenses.

He also does a good job during pick-and-roll coverage and is willing to fight through screens instead of merely going under them. Under Ham, the Lakers had a poor habit of going under screens and doing a poor job of playing drop coverage when facing pick-and-rolls.

If LeBron James’ son ever figures out how to consistently hit outside shots and create off the dribble, perhaps he can become an effective NBA rotation player after all.

NBA writer Chris Mannix on Bronny James’ long-term professional future

There’s a lot for Bronny James to think about, but his road to improvement is going to be long and hard.

After struggling in his Summer League debut, Los Angeles Lakers second-round pick and former USC Trojans guard Bronny James missed a game versus the Golden State Warriors. He then came back into the Laker lineup and struggled for a few games. Then he posted his two most encouraging games of the summer league against the Hawks and Cavaliers. Bronny’s overall collection of results was mixed, but the big picture is something everyone has to be honest about, including and especially Bronny himself: He is not ready to be a regular rotational player in the NBA. He will need time to develop. This was always the reality, and nothing about summer league changed that for Lakers fans who are eager to see James back on the court.

Sports Illustrated’s Chris Mannix joins Rich Eisen in-studio to discuss more in depth about all things Bronny James and his NBA summer league season with the Lakers. Just exactly how should we view Bronny’s long-term NBA future?

Chet Holmgren supports Bronny James after summer league performance

Chet Holmgren supports Bronny James after solid summer league performance.

Arguably the biggest storyline centered around this year’s summer league event is Bronny James. The 19-year-old was controversially selected with the No. 55 pick of the 2024 NBA draft.

The polarizing draft pick caused people to scream nepotism. Many thought the Los Angeles Lakers selected James because of his father LeBron James.

After a poor freshman campaign at USC, James had a rough start to his summer league stint. He failed to make a 3-pointer in several contests. Recently though, he’s played better.

In the Lakers’ summer league win over the Cleveland Cavaliers, the 19-year-old had his best outing of the July event. He totaled 13 points on 5-of-10 shooting, five rebounds and three assists.

Chet Holmgren went on social media to praise the second-round rookie. He said he looked like a professional basketball player. There have been questions about James’ abilities to be an actual NBA player.

He’s undersized as a guard at 6-foot-1 and had a forgettable college season coming off the bench for a bad Trojans squad. A health scare is also another cause for concern. He suffered a cardiac arrest in July 2023.

Amid national scrutiny, James seems to have a supporter in Holmgren. The 19-year-old will likely receive plenty of time in the spotlight next season with the Lakers.

NBA Finals MVP Jaylen Brown comments on Bronny James at summer league

Jaylen Brown is merely saying what most basketball insiders think.

NBA Finals MVP and Boston Celtics All-Star forward Jaylen Brown made some news earlier this week, commenting on former USC guard Bronny James’ NBA summer league struggles.

At one point during the game, TV cameras caught Brown as he turned to his girlfriend Kysre Gondrezick, a former WNBA player, and gave an assessment of the younger James’ play. While there is no audio available of the conversation, Brown appears to say, “I don’t think Bronny is a pro.”

Gondrezick appears to respond, in part, “I think he’ll be on the G League team, for sure.”

The CEO of Klutch Sports and childhood friend of LeBron James, Rich Paul, had this to say about Brown’s comments on ESPN’s Pat McAfee Show:

“At least he is someone who is actually in the league,” Paul added. “There’s a lot of ‘experts’ with no expertise. He’s actually an expert with expertise. So, if he has that opinion, he can have that opinion, but I know Jaylen. I know he doesn’t mean that with any malice. He was just having a conversation.”

Paul, who represents James and Brown said comments like that could end up being motivation for Bronny.

James will continue to develop but has had a rough summer for the Lakers. He has largely struggled to make 3-point shots and develop consistent offense. He has, however, scored in double figures in each of his last two games, showing improvement before the end of this summer league season.

LeBron James praises Bronny James after back-to-back strong games

LeBron James is confident his son Bronny will continue to work hard, stay focused and improve as a basketball player.

Just a few days ago, many people were piling on Bronny James after he got off to a poor start in summer league play. Through four games in both the California Classic and the NBA’s main summer league in Las Vegas, he was struggling mightily to hit his shots offensively, and it looked like perhaps he had made a mistake by turning pro after just one year of college basketball.

But on Wednesday, he shot relatively well in a win over the Atlanta Hawks. He then followed that performance up with another solid one on Thursday when the Los Angeles Lakers defeated the Cleveland Cavaliers.

His father, LeBron James, sounds optimistic about what lies immediately ahead for the 19-year-old (h/t Lakers Daily).

Via The Athletic:

“I mean, he’s 19 years old, so he has so much room to grow,” LeBron said Friday. “He has so much more to learn, but the best thing, he just keeps his head down and just stays focused.

“So the best will continue to come as he continues to work and continues to get better and better.”

The summer Lakers have another game left, which will take place on Saturday versus the Chicago Bulls. Another efficient offensive performance by the younger James would likely tantalize Lakers fans as far as what he could become over time.

He has already shown some real signs of becoming a true plus defender, as he has shown good instincts and discipline on that end of the floor.

Bronny James received a custom rug with his likeness as a gift

After back-to-back solid performances in the NBA summer league, Lakers rookie Bronny James was rewarded with a unique gift.

In his first four summer league games, Bronny James played poorly, shooting just 7-of-31 from the field and 0-of-15 from 3-point range. The buzzards were clearly flying over him, as various people voiced their doubts that he deserved to be in the NBA at all.

But the son of LeBron James has bounced back well in his last two games. He went 5-of-11 from the field on Wednesday against the Atlanta Hawks, and just one day later, he made half of his 10 shots, as well as a big 3-pointer down the stretch.

Not coincidentally, the Los Angeles Lakers won both of those games.

After Thursday’s victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers, the 19-year-old received a unique gift in the form of home decor with his own likeness on it.

The younger James will have one more opportunity to show people, particularly those who doubt him, that he can definitely become a serviceable NBA player. That will come on Saturday when the Lakers play the Chicago Bulls.

Did star Boston Celtics forward Jaylen Brown really slander Los Angeles Lakers rookie Bronny James?

How do we know what was actually said courtside?

Did star Boston Celtics forward Jaylen Brown really slander Los Angeles Lakers rookie guard Bronny James courtside at the NBA’s 2024 Las Vegas Summer League?

To talk it over, the hosts of the CLNS Media “Bob Ryan, Jeff Goodman, and Gary Tanguay!” podcast discussed Brown’s alleged quote put together by amateur lip-readers after the game regarding Bronny and his response to the lip-reading incident, the current US National Olympic team’s struggles to put away lesser squads in early exhibition play ahead of the 2024 Paris Olympics. They also get into how the New York Knicks have improved their roster this offseason and whether they pose a threat to Boston.

Bronny James names his top five NBA players of all time

Can you guess which non-LeBron players Bronny had in his list?

Bronny James spoke recently with ESPN, which asked him to rank his favorite NBA players of all time. Unsurprisingly, Bronny first picked his father, LeBron James.

He was asked to name his five favorite NBA players in order from first to fifth, and his father topped the list. Stephen Curry, Kyrie Irving, Kevin Durant, Anthony Edwards and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander rounded out the list. You might notice that’s six playes, not five. Bronny had Edwards and Gilgeous-Alexander tied for fifth, in case you were wondering.

Bronny also named Brazilian soccer star Neymar Jr. as his favorite athlete other than his dad. He said that he was star-struck the first time he met Stephen Curry.

The younger James got off to a poor start in summer league play, as he went a combined 6-of-26 from the field and 0-of-12 from 3-point range heading into this week. However, Bronny has since put together his two best games in the summer, finally making a few 3-pointers and scoring in double figures in games against the Atlanta Hawks and Cleveland Cavaliers. When Bronny shoots the ball reasonably well, he becomes a well-rounded player, because his defense and off-ball activity are good. His offense is where his game is conspicuously limited. His body also needs to fill out; remember, he would have been a sophomore in college had he stayed in school, so he is still very young and has not hit his physical prime.
