Former Notre Dame guard one win away from first WNBA championship

Good luck in Game 5, Kayla!

[autotag]Kayla McBride[/autotag] has experienced a lot in her 11 WNBA seasons, including four All-Star selections, one of which came this year. But the former Notre Dame guard has yet to call herself a champion. That could be about to change.

McBride and the Minnesota Lynx forced a decisive Game 5 in the WNBA Finals after defeating the New York Liberty in Game 4, 82-80. Bridget Carleton made a pair of free throws with two seconds left to put the Lynx in front. Sabrina Ionescu’s would-be buzzer-beating 3-pointer wound up an air ball, denying the Liberty their first championship for the moment.

McBride led the Lynx with 19 points. She also grabbed two rebounds and dished out four assists. Through four games in the series, she is averaging 17.0 points, 1.8 rebounds and 2.8 assists while shooting 43.1% from the field.

The Lynx currently have four championships in their history. A fifth would give them the most for any WNBA franchise. Here’s hoping McBride gets to be part of that fifth title, assuming she can bring herself to watch:

Game 5 will be played Sunday in Brooklyn.

Caitlin Clark crossed up Lynx’s Bridget Carleton on the way to this ankle-breaking layup

Caitlin Clark broke this Minnesota Lynx player’s ankles on this beautiful cross-up.

Indiana Fever rookie guard Caitlin Clark isn’t just one of the most dangerous 3-point scorers in the WNBA.

She’s absolutely devastating when she’s able to get a lane to the basket for a layup, as Minnesota Lynx forward Bridget Carleton learned the hard way on Sunday.

As Clark was going in for the bucket, she crossed up Carleton with a swift move and made it right in the paint for the score.

Carleton had no chance against this very nifty Clark cross-up, as the Fever rookie glided to the basket and earned a heck of a highlight in the process.

Minnesota Lynx win their first ever Commissioner’s Cup championship

The Lynx defeated the Liberty, 94-89, to claim the title as champions of the 2024 WNBA Commissioner’s Cup.

The Minnesota Lynx defeated the New York Liberty, 94-89, to claim the title of 2024 WNBA Commissioner’s Cup champions. The Lynx won the $500,000 prize pool and raised $27,000 for their selected non-profit organization.

Napheesa Collier and Bridget Carleton each scored over 20 points a piece to defeat the reigning champion, Liberty. Collier had six rebounds and three assists along with her 21 points and won the game’s MVP award.

“It’s really good,” Collier said. ” I always want to win championships. This is a championship we won, but there’s still work to be done. A lot of games to be played. We want to build on this. We don’t want to peak here. This is amazing. At the end of the day, we want to achieve bigger things than this at the end of the season.”

The Liberty’s Breanna Stewart scored 24 points and Sabrina Ionescu added 23, but it was not enough to overcome the 20 turnovers they had and the generally lackluster performance of the team as a whole.

“I think that they executed better than us and that’s it, both ends of the floor,” Stewart said. “We weren’t able to get anything we wanted. Twenty-one turnovers are never going to win the game.”
