Shooter of Commanders running back Brian Robinson Jr. sentenced

The rookie running back was shot on Aug. 28 and made an amazing recovery to play in 12 games, rushing for 707 yards.

The teen who shot Washington Commanders running back Brian Robinson Jr. on Aug. 28, 2022, has been sentenced in a court of law.

The 15-year-old received the maximum sentence for a minor, and he will be in custody until he turns 21.

Prosecutors had earlier asked that the teenage suspect be committed to a youth rehabilitation facility.

Robinson was shot on Aug. 28 after being threatened by two young males in what appeared to be a carjacking attempt.

Robinson’s Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat was parked in the 1000 block of H Street Northeast when the two young males attempted to rob Robinson of his car at 5:28 p.m. The two suspects ran from the scene, and officers recovered a firearm nearby.

Two arrests had been made in November of 17 and 15-year-old males. In January, the 15-year-old plead guilty to shooting Robinson. He also plead guilty to the October fatal shooting of 15-year-old Andre Robertson.

Robinson (23) had surgery, recovered nicely, was able to play in 12 games, starting nine during the 2022 regular season. He rushed for 797 yards on 205 carries (3.9 YPC) and two touchdowns. He also caught nine passes for 60 yards and one touchdown. Robinson was drafted in the third round (98 overall) in the 2022 NFL draft.

Was Commanders’ Brian Robinson overlooked for comeback award?

How was Brian Robinson Jr. not even a finalist for NFL comeback player of the year?

On Friday, the PFWA [Pro Football Writers of America] NFL Comeback Player of the Year was announced… Can’t help but wonder what does this mean for Washington’s Brian Robinson Jr. and the annual award?

Seattle Seahawks quarterback Geno Smith was voted PFWA’s 2022 NFL Comeback Player of the Year award. Keep in mind this is the PFWA award, not the official AP honor, which will be revealed on Feb. 9 at NFL Honors. Smith is one of three finalists, along with 49ers RB Christian McCaffrey and Giants RB Saquon Barkley

Awards like this are, of course, subjective. This particular award is typically given to an NFL player who missed the previous NFL season due to a serious illness or injury. Yet, there have also been times a player received the award for overcoming such poor performance the previous season.

So, where does Commanders running back Brian Robinson fit into this equation? Robinson was shot twice on Aug. 28 in Washington DC, the victim of an attempted carjacking. Reports had Robinson shot in his glute and knee. Remarkably he suffered no long-term damage to the knee and returned to play only six weeks later against the Tennessee Titans at FedEx Field.

Perhaps the remarkable nature of the shooting not forcing Robinson to miss more than four weeks may eliminate Robinson from consideration for the award.

We can all be certain, Robinson shot by carjackers could have certainly lost much, much more than four weeks of NFL action. It is great news for Robinson that he was not permanently injured (or even killed) by the carjackers’ evil intentions.

Apparently, Robinson was not considered for this year’s award because he did not miss the previous NFL season. Having not missed this current 2022 NFL season, perhaps he will not be considered for next year’s award either?

The former Alabama running back led the Commanders in 2022 with 797 rushing yards on 205 carries for 3.9 yards per carry. Robinson played in the final 12 games of the season, starting nine. He also caught nine receptions for 60 yards (6.7 YPR).

Drafted in the third round of the 2022 draft (98th overall), Robinson had two rushing touchdowns and one receiving.

Alex Smith won the 2020 Comeback Player of the Year Award. having been forced to miss all of the 2019 season due to multiple surgeries, infections and nearly losing a leg.

Pro Football Weekly in 1978 voted Washington’s John Riggins its Comeback Player of the Year following Riggins being injured and only producing 203 rushing yards in 1977. In that ’78 season, Riggins rushed for 1,0014 yards and five touchdowns.

Smith was certainly deserving of the award, ending his 2022 season having passed for a career-best 30 touchdown passes. In addition, Smith also accomplished a new Seahawks franchise record of 4,282 passing yards, and Smith led the NFL in completion rate at 69.8%.

Commanders Ron Rivera: ‘Well, don’t ask the question, then’

Ron Rivera knew he would be asked about more off-field stuff when he spoke to the media Thursday.

Ron Rivera met with the press Thursday and knew a particular question would be asked.

On Wednesday, the Commanders (referenced Brian Robinson being shot) in a press release responding to a civil suit that was going to be announced the following day against Daniel Snyder and the NFL, by DC Attorney General Karl Racine.

Jason came out and made a statement last night and talked about it. Just going forward, as far as we are concerned it’s interesting. I’m being sincere.”

“We are trying to focus on what’s on the field. We can’t control that portion (off-field) of it again. What we control is the football aspect of it. What our players do, what our team does on the football field. We are going to remain focused on that.”

Rivera was understandably frustrated and admitted as much. “Yes, because it will be talked about; that’s the honest truth. To me, it’s a moot point because we control what’s on the football field. That’s what I told the players. ‘Let’s just focus on what we do, on what’s important for what we do and how we handle things’.”

“I know you guys are going to ask the question and somebody is going to ask me, ‘Well what do you think about the distractions’? Well, don’t ask the question, then. Leave him alone. You guys know how everybody feels and you know everybody is putting it out there. So let’s just focus on playing the game.”

When asked how the players reacted to Robinson being used in the statement, “When I talked to the players, the players seem to understand and be in a good place. I have an open-door policy if they want to come speak to me. I urge them to come talk to me. To date, nobody has talked to me.”

“I talked to Brian last night, and talked to him again today. Brian is in a great spot. Brian didn’t understand what the big fuss was. I have to decide whether or not this is going to get back to the players. If it’s something I feel will get back to the players, then I’ve got to address it with the guys. I do wonder about some of the reactions, the perception. So I mention it quickly ‘so you guys know what is out there. It doesn’t affect what we do on the football field, so let’s not be concerned with it. Let’s focus on playing the game’.”
