Dolphins requesting permission to interview Bills OC Brian Daboll

The Dolphins have made their first reported interview request.

After the Miami Dolphins fired Brian Flores early on Monday, they are gearing up to start the interview process to find their next head coach.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Dolphins requested permission from the Buffalo Bills to interview offensive coordinator Brian Daboll for the job.

Dolphins fans may be familiar with Daboll, as he was the team’s offensive coordinator back in 2011.

The 46-year-old has done a lot to help the Bills establish themselves as a contender in the AFC since he joined Sean McDermott’s staff in 2018. He’s also been credited with a lot of Josh Allen’s growth since entering the league, as he’s become a potential MVP candidate in recent years.

Prior to his time with Buffalo, Daboll spent a year at Alabama, where he was the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach the year Tua Tagovailoa came in to relieve Jalen Hurts during the national championship. Tagovailoa won the MVP in that game.

The Dolphins aren’t the only team that has requested an interview with Daboll. Chicago has jumped on that boat, and other teams will follow quickly.

Where Brian Flores ranks in Dolphins head coach history

The history hasn’t been great.

The Miami Dolphins decided to fire head coach Brian Flores following their ninth win of the season that came in Week 18 against the New England Patriots.

Flores’ three seasons with the team didn’t go exactly the way he would’ve hoped. They had different offensive coordinators and a different offensive line coach every year, and some of the team’s top draft picks never developed into the players they were expected to be.

While the drafting can partially fall on general manager Chris Grier, who is reportedly safe from being fired at this time, the goal of a coach is to be a contender for a championship. In his tenure, Miami was never that.

At this point, it’s a good time to reflect on Flores’ time in Miami and compare him to his predecessors. Here’s a ranking of the all full-time Dolphins head coaches based on their winning percentage.

6 potential targets for Dolphins to hire as next head coach

These guys could make sense for Miami.

The Miami Dolphins have fired head coach Brian Flores after the team’s 33-24 win over the New England Patriots in Week 18.

There were likely going to be questions about the status of general manager Chris Grier as well, but reports Monday morning declared him safe at this point.

Now, Miami joins the Chicago Bears, Minnesota Vikings, Jacksonville Jaguars, Denver Broncos, Las Vegas Raiders, and likely more as teams who will be in the market for a coach.

While there are sure to be numerous reports and rumors floated around in the coming days and weeks, these are six names that the Dolphins may be interested in bringing in to be their next head coach.

Here is Brian Flores’ statement regarding his firing

The former head coach sent a statement to ESPN.

The Miami Dolphins announced on Monday that they have head coach Brian Flores after three seasons. With the announcement, owner Stephen Ross released a statement about Flores and the decision that he and general manager Chris Grier, who is reportedly safe, were making.

In his three seasons with Miami, Flores was 24-25 and failed to get the team to the postseason in any of those three opportunities. There were a lot of things that could’ve been questioned during his tenure, but for the most part, it seemed like he had control of his locker room, and the players in there liked him.

Late Monday morning, Flores released his statement to ESPN.

Flores will likely begin looking for another opportunity this offseason, and it shouldn’t be too difficult for him to find one.

Dolphins players react emotionally, unhappily to Brian Flores’ firing

Several Dolphins players reacted emotionally on Twitter to head coach Brian Flores’ firing.

The Miami Dolphins’ Monday decision to fire head coach Brian Flores as unquestionably the most surprising termination of employment in 2022’s Black Monday firing cycle. Handed a lackluster roster and a rancid culture after the Adam Gase experience, Flores rose to 10-6 in his second season of 2020 despite the fact that his team was obviously tanking for more and better draft picks. 2021 started with a 1-7 record, but the Dolphins won eight of their last nine games, and it seemed as if everything was finally on the right track.

Team owner Stephen Ross did not agree.

“I made a decision today to part ways with Brian Flores,” Ross said in a statement. “After evaluating where we are as an organization and what we need going forward to improve, I determined that key dynamics of our football organization weren’t functioning at a level I want it to be and felt that this decision was in the best interest of the Miami Dolphins.  I believe we have a talented young roster in place and have the opportunity to be much better in 2022.  I want to thank Brian for his hard work and wish him nothing but the best in his future.”

The players Flores coached were less sure about the move, and many of them were obviously — and publicly — emotional after it happened.

Twitter reacts to the Miami Dolphins firing Brian Flores

The internet went wild.

The Miami Dolphins announced on Monday that they have fired head coach Brian Flores after three seasons with the team.

While Flores may not have gotten them to the playoffs in any of those three seasons, he brought them to a winning record in the last two. The players in Miami seemed to love playing for him because he was an honest communicator. Tua Tagovailoa mentioned how much he appreciated how candid Flores was throughout the rumors of a potential Deshaun Watson trade.

Anytime there’s breaking news this big, the people of social media are going to lose their minds. Here’s how the internet reacted to the news.

Report: Dolphins are not targeting Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh

It’s not expected that the Michigan Wolverine will make his NFL return in Miami.

The Miami Dolphins have fired head coach Brian Flores on the Monday after Week 18, as they join the pool of teams now looking for a new coach.

With all of the rampant speculation that will come with the coaching search, one name that reportedly hasn’t been on that list is Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh, according to ESPN’s Jeff Darlington.

Harbaugh had one of his best years at Michigan this season since signing on in 2015. He led his team to a 14-2 overall record and a trip to the College Football Playoff, where they were defeated by Georgia in the Orange Bowl.

While Dolphins owner Stephen Ross has large connections to Michigan, it appears that they will be looking elsewhere to find the next leader of their locker room.

Dolphins firing head coach Brian Flores was Black Monday’s big surprise

The Dolphins’ decision to fire head coach Brian Flores was Black Monday’s big surprise.

Despite winning eight of his final nine games in the 2021 regular season, Dolphins head coach Brian Flores was fired by the Miami Dolphins on Monday morning.

“I made a decision today to part ways with Brian Flores,” Dolphins owner Stephen Ross said in a statement.

Hired by the team on February 4, 2019, Flores, who had worked his way up in the Patriots organization from scouting assistant to pro scout to special teams assistant to defensive assistant to safeties coach to linebackers coach and de facto defensive coordinator, Flores seemed to avoid many of the issues common to former Bill Belichick assistants. He didn’t assume he knew everything because of his professional lineage, and he was successful in creating a culture in an organization that had very little after the disastrous tenure of Adam Gase.

Flores went 5-11 in 2019, his first year with the Dolphins, with a roster very much under construction and Ryan Fitzpatrick as his quarterback. 2020, which was supposed to be the Dolphins’ tanking and rebuilding year, turned into a 10-6 record and near playoff berth, which was the shock of the NFL.

The 2021 Dolphins started the season with a 1-7 record, and Flores could have handled the quarterback situation better with Tua Tagovailoa and Jacoby Brissett. But led by an outstanding defense that he build and coordinated to a great degree in concert with general manager Chris Grier, the Dolphins were able to rattle off a bunch of wins later in the season, including a season-finale win against (and a season sweep of) the Patriots.

Flores concludes his Dolphins tenure with a 24-25 record.

Dolphins GM Chris Grier will not be fired with Brian Flores

They are keeping the general manager but not the coach.

On the Monday following the conclusion of the NFL’s regular season, the Miami Dolphins fired head coach Brian Flores.

Flores’ tenure with Miami lasted just three seasons. The team was 24-25 in games that he coached including a horrible 2019 season that was a rebuilding year.

After news of Flores’ firing, there’s obviously been speculation regarding the job status of general manager Chris Grier. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Grier is safe and will remain in his current position.

This move comes as a bit of a surprise considering many would point out that Dolphins haven’t made the postseason since Grier’s first season as general manager. He will now be on his third head coach during his tenure which is more than most at his position can say.

Here’s the Dolphins’ statement on the firing of Brian Flores

Stephen Ross commented on moving on from Brian Flores.

The Miami Dolphins fired Brian Flores Monday morning following the end of the NFL’s regular season.

After three seasons with the team, Flores had a 24-25 record and was unable to make it to the postseason. The 2021 season was one of the more difficult to follow at points, as the Dolphins lost seven of their first eight games, making it extremely difficult for them to reach the playoffs. However, after winning seven in a row, the team had a shot by Week 17, but they fell just short.

Owner Stephen Ross has been a force working behind the scenes on multiple fronts this season, as he was the one who gave the final decision to move fire the coach.

The team released this statement on the move:
