Milwaukee Brewers at St. Louis Cardinals odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Thursday’s Milwaukee Brewers at St. Louis Cardinals odds and lines, with MLB picks and predictions.

The Milwaukee Brewers (95-63) put an end to the 17-game win streak of the St. Louis Cardinals (88-70) Wednesday night. They’ll look to win the rubber game of the series when the teams meet again Thursday at 1:15 p.m. ET at Busch Stadium. Let’s analyze the lines around the Brewers vs. Cardinals odds with MLB picks and predictions.

Brewers LHP Brett Anderson (4-9, 4.30 ERA) makes his 23rd start. He has a 1.39 WHIP, 2.7 BB/9 and 5.6 K/9 through 90 IP.

  • Missed three weeks this month due to a shoulder contusion, returning last week against St. Louis and allowed 6 runs (2 earned) over just 1 2/3 IP.
  • Has made 13 starts on the road this year, where he has posted a 4.79 ERA and 5.4 K/9 across 47 IP.

Cardinals LHP J.A. Happ (9-8, 5.86 ERA) makes his 30th start. He has a 1.48 WHIP, 3.0 BB/9 and 7.1 K/9 through 146 IP.

  • Put up a 6.77 ERA over 19 starts with the Minnesota Twins; he recorded a 2.22 ERA in five August starts with the Cardinals but in five starts since has a 6.52 ERA and 1.9 HR/9.
  • Has made five starts at Busch Stadium this season, where he has recorded a 3.91 ERA and 21/4 K/BB through 25 1/3 IP

Prediction

Brewers 6, Cardinals 4

Money line (ML)

Neither pitcher comes into this game on a high note. We already mentioned Happ’s recent struggles, and Anderson has allowed 18 runs (14 earned) across just 16 1/3 IP over his last five outings with a 12/8 K/BB.

Milwaukee has been excellent on the road all year, as their 50-27 mark ranks second in all of baseball. The Cards have obviously been red-hot, but they are 29th on the season in runs per game at home. Look for the BREWERS (-108) to get the job done.

Run line/Against the spread (ATS)

Both pitchers are susceptible to blowups, but Anderson at least keeps the ball in the park, as his 1.0 HR/9 is far better than Happ’s 1.8 mark. There’s enough value here for a small play on the road team. Side with the BREWERS -1.5 (+145).

Over/Under (O/U)

Happ’s five-start hot streak following his arrival in St. Louis proved to be a fluke, and he has been getting knocked around again for the past month. Anderson hasn’t been great, either, and the St. Louis offense has been clicking, averaging 8 runs per game over their last seven prior to Wednesday’s shutout loss.

Neither offense is likely to get shut down in this one, while both are capable of a big day. Get in on OVER 8.5 (-130), as it’s the best bet on the board in this game.

Milwaukee Brewers at St. Louis Cardinals odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Wednesday’s Milwaukee Brewers at St. Louis Cardinals odds and lines, with MLB picks and predictions.

The Milwaukee Brewers (94-63) attempt to even their series against the streaking St. Louis Cardinals (88-69) Wednesday. First pitch is scheduled for 7:45 ET at Busch Stadium. Let’s analyze the lines around the Brewers vs. Cardinals odds with MLB picks and predictions.

Brewers RHP Adrian Houser (9-6, 3.34 ERA) makes his 26th start and 28th appearance. He has a 1.29 WHIP, 4.1 BB/9 and 6.8 K/9 through 137 1/3 IP.

  • Has allowed only 1 earned run over 20 innings en route to a 2-0 record through three starts against St. Louis this season.
  • The Brewers are 17-8 in his starts this season and have won three of his last four.

Cardinals RHP Miles Mikolas (2-2, 4.15 ERA) makes his ninth start. He has a 1.18 WHIP, 2.3 BB/9 and 5.5 K/9 through 39 IP.

  • He allowed 2 runs and 4 hits over 7 innings in a 10-2 win against the Brewers his last time out.
  • The Cardinals have won his last three starts. He has only allowed 2 earned runs in his last 12 2/3 innings pitched.

Prediction

Brewers 5, Cardinals 2

Money line (ML)

The Brewers have the NL Central division title already locked up but want to end their five-game losing streak to the Cardinals, who are the hottest team in baseball.

The Cardinals have won 17 straight games and 19 of their last 20. They are now 10-7 against the Brewers this season.

However, Houser has been dominant against St. Louis. He gave up only 1 run in 6 innings before the Cardinals scored 7 against the Milwaukee bullpen to beat them 8-5 in his last start.

The streak comes to an end tonight. Take the BREWERS (-103).

Run line/Against the spread (ATS)

The Brewers are 86-71 ATS overall and 49-27 ATS on the road, the second-best mark in the majors.

The Cardinals have covered the spread in 17 of their last 20 games. They are 85-72 ATS on the season but are 35-41 ATS at home.

With the inverted spread (the Cardinals are favored on the money line but the Brewers are favored on the run line), this game offers great value on the Brewers.

Can they not only win but beat the Cardinals by at least 2 runs? This is as good a night to do it as any. Houser has been fantastic against the Cardinals and Mikolas is the Cardinals starting pitcher you can count on the least in their rotation.

Take the BREWERS -1.5 (+160).

Over/Under (O/U)

Nine of the 17 games between the two teams this season have had totals of 8 or more runs.

Seven of the last 10 games for the Cardinals have had 8 or more runs.

Half of the Brewers’ last eight games have had 8 or more runs.

Houser’s pitching will keep the Cardinals bats at bay and this will stay a low-scoring game. Take UNDER 7.5 (+100).

Milwaukee Brewers at St. Louis Cardinals odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Tuesday’s Milwaukee Brewers at St. Louis Cardinals odds and lines, with MLB picks and predictions.

The Milwaukee Brewers (94-62) and St. Louis Cardinals (87-69) open a three-game series Tuesday at Busch Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 7:45 p.m. ET. Let’s analyze the lines around the Brewers vs. Cardinals odds with MLB picks and predictions.

Brewers RHP Brandon Woodruff (9-10, 2.52 ERA) makes his 30th start. He has a 0.95 WHIP, 2.2 BB/9 and 10.7 K/9 through 175 1/3 IP.

  • Held the Cardinals to 1 earned run on 2 hits and 1 walk with 10 strikeouts over 6 innings in a 2-1 loss Sept. 21.
  • Top seven among qualified starters in SIERA, xFIP and K-BB%.

Cardinals RHP Adam Wainwright (16-7, 3.05 ERA) makes his 32nd start. He has a 1.04 WHIP, 2.2 BB/9 and 7.6 K/9 through 200 1/3 IP.

  • Gave up 5 earned runs on 4 hits and 2 walks with 1 strikeout through 4 innings Thursday against the Brewers.
  • 1-1 with a 3.80 ERA, 1.45 WHIP and 6.3 K/9 over 21 1/3 IP across four starts against Milwaukee.

Prediction

Brewers 5, Cardinals 3

Money line (ML)

This is a tough matchup for Milwaukee who was just swept in a four-game home series by St. Louis last week, but despite the sweep and the Cardinals’ 16-game win streak, I’m going to back the Brewers Tuesday.

Wainwright and Woodruff have been lights out in the second half of the season, but Woodruff retains the edge. The Brewers’ right-hander ranks in the 92nd percentile for HardHit rate and 94th percentile in Average Exit Velocity while ranking in the 84th percentile or better in Chase Rate, K%, xERA and xwOBA; Wainwright is in the 71st or worst percentile by all of those measurements.

The bullpens for each team have performed similarly throughout September, and while the Cardinals have been the better team at the plate Woodruff was dominant against them in his Sept. 21 start.

It’s just a small lean, a partial-unit play perhaps, on MILWAUKEE (-125).

FANTASY BASEBALL: Serious about winning your league? Sign up for BaseballHQ.com to dominate the competition. Subscribe now!

Run line/Against the spread (ATS)

The Brewers trail just the San Francisco Giants league-wide in road cover percentage as they have posted a 49-26 (65.3%) ATS record away from American Family Field.

I wouldn’t get too crazy here as the Cardinals are on a franchise-record win streak, but getting one of baseball’s best teams at +140 to win by 2 or more runs has some value – they’ve done so in six of their seven victories over the Cardinals in the season series.

BREWERS -1.5 (+140) is my play.

Over/Under (O/U)

Wainwright and Woodruff have both put up clunkers against the opposing team in recent meetings – Wainwright allowed 5 earned runs over 4 innings last week, and Woodruff was dinged for 6 earned runs over 5 innings in August. They’re not immune to rough starts against their division rival.

This number is a bit too low for me; however, I think it can get there and I lean toward OVER 6.5 (-145).

Brewers RHP Brandon Woodruff (7-6, 2.18 ERA) makes his 24th start of the season. He enters Thursday with a 0.91 WHIP, 2.3 BB/9 and 10.5 K/9 through 140 1/3 IP.

Milwaukee Brewers at St. Louis Cardinals odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Saturday’s Milwaukee Brewers at St. Louis Cardinals odds and lines, with MLB picks and predictions.

The Milwaukee Brewers (3-4) and St. Louis Cardinals (5-2) continue their three-game series Saturday at 2:15 p.m. ET at Busch Stadium. Let’s analyze BetMGM Sportsbook‘s lines around the Brewers vs. Cardinals odds with MLB picks and predictions.

RHP Adrian Houser is the projected starting pitcher for the Brewers. A year ago, Houser went 1-6 with a 5.30 ERA, 1.50 WHIP, 7.1 K/9 and 3.4 BB/9 in 56 IP over 12 appearances. He went five frames, allowing two runs in his 2021 debut. Houser owns a 210-point split in his vs.-left/vs.-right-effectiveness (.853 OPS allowed vs. left-handed bats; .643 OPS allowed vs. right-handed bats).

RHP Carlos Martinez is the Cardinals’ choice for Saturday. Martinez started just five games in 2020; he went 0-3 with a 9.90 ERA, 2.10 WHIP, 7.7 K/9, and 4.5 BB/9 in 20 IP. He missed games due to a COVID diagnosis and an oblique injury. Martinez started the Cards’ April 4 game at Cincinnati; he allowed four runs in 5 IP. He was cruising until the second time through the order when things derailed.

  • Money line: Brewers -105 (bet $105 to win $100) | Cardinals -115 (bet $100 to win $115)
  • Against the spread/ATS:  Brewers -1.5 (+155) |  Cardinals +1.5 (-190)
  • Over/Under: 8 (O: -110 | U: -110)

Prediction

Brewers 5, Cardinals 4

Money line (ML)

This series started Thursday and included a Friday off day. Still, considering top-end work Thursday and on the previous couple days, the Milwaukee bullpen is in better shape heading into Saturday.

Houser’s platoon edge plays into this wager as well. Against righty starters, the Cardinals lineup leans more to the right than most.

Milwaukee outscored St. Louis, 41-29, in a 10-game split a year ago. Getting Houser plus a sharper edge of the relief exchange makes for Brewers value on anything less than -120.

BACK THE BREWERS -105.

FANTASY BASEBALL: Serious about winning your league? Sign up for BaseballHQ.com to dominate the competition. Subscribe now!

Run line/Against the spread (ATS)

PASS on the juicier run line, and protect your bankroll against prices that are difficult to outrun.

Over/Under (O/U)

Looking at the batting average on balls in play is instructive to analyzing the offenses on both sides here. Both attacks have been BABIP-beaten down early, Milwaukee with a .233 BABIP and St. Louis with a .250 figure. The Brewers numbers are also dodgy when leading off an inning, a stat that is as important as any late-game, man-on numbers with how clutch and impactful they are.

Weather conditions for Busch Stadium are forecast as cool, but humid, and with a 17-mile-an-hour wind blowing out to center. Both starters get a lot of ground balls, but both pens are prone to the aerial game.

TAKE THE OVER 8 (-110).
