Atlanta selected Sears in the seventh round, becoming the fourth seventh-round selection in Nebraska history. Sears is now the fifth Husker pitcher under head coach Will Bolt to be drafted in the first 10 roundten, joining Spencer Schwellenbach, Cade Povich, Emmett Olson, and Jace Kaminska.

The senior is the sixth Husker to be selected by the Braves in the draft. Sears earned All-American and Academic All-American in the 2024 season, the first Nebraska player in the same season since Aaron Marsden in 2003.

He was also named Big Ten Pitcher of the Year and a First-Team All-Big Ten selection, posting a 9-1 record with a 2.16 ERA and 101 strikeouts in 104 innings. He finished among the national leaders throughout the season, ranking fourth with a 0.88 WHIP, fifth in ERA (2.16), 19th in strikeout-to-walk ratio (5.32), and 20th in hits allowed/9 inn. (6.23).

Sears is the first Husker to throw 100-plus strikeouts in a season since 2008, and his 101 strikeouts placed him ninth in program history. His 104 innings pitching also finished him tied for eighth in program history.

Senior Brett Sears was named a second-team Academic All-American on Tuesday, adding to the All-American recognitions he received back in June.

Sears joined the Huskers after playing two seasons at Western Illinois and one year at Iowa Central Community College. He is the first Husker baseball player to be an Academic All-American since 2016. He is the first Nebraska player to be an All-American and Academic All-American in the same season since Aaron Marsden in 2003.

The Westphalia, Iowa, native is the 19th player in program history to be named an Academic All-American, increasing Nebraska’s total to 22 all-time. Sears finished the year with a 3.65 cumulative GPA while earning a degree in child, youth, and family studies.

Nebraska pitcher Brett Sears has been named the Big Ten Pitcher of the Year.

Nebraska starting pitcher Brett Sears became the first Nebraska pitcher since the Huskers joined the Big Ten to win the conference’s pitcher of the year honors.

Overall, Sears was one of five Huskers to earn All-Big Ten honors for their performances during the 2024 season.

Sears this season in 15 starts, collected a 9-0 record with a 2.02 ERA in 98 innings pitched. He allowed just 22 earned runs on the season while also only allowing 18 walks in his 98 innings pitched while striking out 96.

It was a stark difference from Sears’ 2023 season, in which he pitched his way to a 5.29 ERA in just 11 games and 17 innings.

Mason McConnaughey, Tyler Stone, Case Sanderson, and Drew Christo also earned Big Ten honors for their performances this regular season.

Nebraska pitcher Brett Sears was named the Big Ten’s Pitcher of the Week on Monday afternoon.

Nebraska pitcher Brett Sears was named the Big Ten’s Pitcher of the Week on Monday afternoon. Sears threw a two-hit complete-game shutout in the Cornhuskers 3-0 win against Ohio State last Friday.

The two hits are the fewest allowed in a complete game by an NU pitcher since Matt Waldron against Michigan State in 2019. Sears had a career-high ten strikeouts with zero walks in the performance.

The Iowa native is 6-0 on the season with a 1.14 ERA in 55 innings pitched. Nebraska is currently ranked No. 21 by the USA TODAY Coaches Poll.
