Brentson Buckner: ‘Jacksonville didn’t pay me to be a big cheerleader’

Jaguars defensive line coach Brentson Buckner doesn’t see much benefit in being a cheerleader on the sideline.

The Jacksonville Jaguars could use better play from their defensive line in 2023. While the team was top 10 in the NFL in yards allowed per opposing rushing attempt last season, the Jaguars finished 26th in the league in sacks.

After Jacksonville opted against making many changes to the roster in the offseason, it’ll largely be up to the same group of players to find more production than they did in 2022. And it’s safe to say defensive line coach Brentson Buckner won’t be taking it easy on the players he’s tasked with developing.

“I’m always challenging them,” Buckner said on an episode of the Jaguars’ The Hunt. “I’m putting them in situations I know they’re not comfortable because I want them to grow as players and grow as people and be able to face those challenges. I don’t think Jacksonville paid me to be a big cheerleader and cheer what they do good. I think they paid me to make that bad good.

“If you do five things good and 10 things bad, let me make it 10 things good and five things bad. We’re gonna work on that every day. I’m gonna show up every day and you’re going to get tired of me telling you you’re not good at doing that until you finally get to a point, ‘Let me prove coach wrong.’ Then we both win.”

Most under the microscope is the development of 2022 first overall draft pick Travon Walker, who finished his rookie season with just 3.5 sacks. The Jaguars could also use more production from Josh Allen, who had 10.5 sacks as a rookie, but 17 sacks in the last three years.

Buckner, 51, previously coached the Arizona Cardinals, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and Oakland Raiders defensive lines. He was hired by the Jaguars in February 2022.

Davon Hamilton: ‘I don’t want to just be known as the run-stopper’

DaVon Hamilton wants to diversify his game and be a “whole defensive lineman.”

The slow and steady rise of DaVon Hamilton through his first three NFL seasons earned him a three-year, $34.5 million extension from the Jacksonville Jaguars. But the 26-year-old nose tackle says the new deal doesn’t mean he’s reached his peak.

In a feature with the Florida Times-Union’s Demetrius Harvey, Hamilton says he’s still trying to round out his game to become one of the better interior defensive linemen in the league.

“I’m really trying to diversify my game in general. I don’t want to just be known as the run-stopper even though I’m really good at it,” Hamilton told Harvey. “That’s my thing, but I really want to be more diverse as a whole defensive lineman in the NFL.”

Hamilton earned grades of 53.9 and 52.8 from Pro Football Focus in his first two seasons before breaking out with a 74.9 grade in 2022. While he was second on the team in run stops with 31, Hamilton was also sixth on the team in quarterback pressures with 31.

“I tell him, look at the growth of guys like Vita Vea. People said that Vita Vea was just gonna be a run-stopper coming out of Tampa Bay. And I think he ended up leading them in sacks this past year,” Jaguars defensive line coach Brentson Buckner told Harvey of Hamilton.

“You look at Daron Payne and those guys. The evolution of those guys, because they’re blessed with athletic ability, when the game goes to more pass, they can evolve into powerful pass rushers who could be very relevant in this game and DaVon has that type of ability. Now he’s got to go out there and do it.”

Hamilton is now under contract with the Jaguars through the 2026 NFL season.

A former Clemson standout has officially joined the Jacksonville Jaguars’ coaching staff.

The Jaguars announced Thursday that their 2022 coaching staff has been finalized and formally announced former Tiger and veteran NFL defensive line coach Brentson Buckner as their new defensive line coach.

Buckner spent the last two seasons in Arizona as the Cardinals’ defensive line coach after previous stops with the Raiders, Buccaneers, Cardinals and Steelers. A native of Columbus, Ga., Buckner brings eight years of NFL coaching experience and 12 years of NFL playing experience as a defensive lineman.

Buckner was an All-ACC defensive tackle for the Tigers from 1990-93 and was drafted in the second round of the 1994 NFL Draft by the Steelers. He played in the NFL for 12 seasons with the Steelers, Bengals, 49ers and Panthers, and played in two Super Bowls with the Steelers and Panthers.

Report: Jaguars expected to hire Brenston Buckner as DL coach

Brentson Buckner was a longtime NFL player and has been a defensive line coach in the league since 2013

New Jacksonville head coach Doug Pederson has already added a defensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, and it looks like he may be closing in on a defensive line coach hire, as well. According to a report from Pro Football Network’s Aaron Wilson, the Jaguars plan to hire Brentson Buckner to fill the vacant role which was held by current Oregon Ducks defensive coordinator Tosh Lupoi in 2021.

Buckner is a longtime former player, registering 12 seasons in the league before beginning his coaching career. He has spent the last two seasons as the defensive line coach for the Arizona Cardinals and previously held the same position in Oakland, Tampa Bay, and in a previous stint with Arizona from 2013-17.

Wilson reported earlier that the Jaguars were also considering Phillip Daniels for the position. Daniels worked with Pederson in Philadelphia and was previously an executive in Washington but has been out of coaching since 2019.

This hire makes a lot of sense for Jacksonville, as Buckner is a well-traveled defensive line coach and is well regarded around the league. He could soon find himself as a coordinator candidate, but for now, the Jaguars seem to have landed a stud for the defensive coaching staff.

Buckner spent the last two seasons in his second stint as the defensive line coach for the Cardinals after previously holding the same position with the Raiders (2019) and Buccaneers (2018). He was also the Cardinals’ D-line coach from 2013-17 after interning for the Steelers from 2010-12.

Brentson Buckner hired by Jaguars to be DL coach, is 2nd Cardinals coach to leave

Buckner had been the D-line coach for the Cardinals the last three years in his second stint here. He reunites with Mike Caldwell.

The Arizona Cardinals now have two vacancies on their coaching staff. The first was created when Jim Dray, the offensive quality control coach for the last two seasons, took a promotion to be tight ends coach for the Chicago Bears.

After being one of the finalists for the job, Brentson Buckner, who in his second stint on the coaching staff, was defensive line coach for the Cardinals the last two seasons, has been hired by the Jacksonville Jaguars to hold the same position, according to Aaron Wilson.

Buckner will be reunited with Mike Caldwell, who is going to be the Jaguars’ new defensive coordinator. Caldwell was linebackers coach for the Cardinals under head coach Bruce Arians when Buckner was also defensive line coach.

The two were also teammates in 2003 with the Carolina Panthers. It was Caldwell’s final year in the NFL as a player.

Cardinals DL coach Brentson Buckner could leave for Jaguars

Buckner is under consideration for the Jags’ D-line coach position, which would reunite him with Mike Caldwell.

The Arizona Cardinals have at least one coach on the staff who is heading to another team. We know that offensive quality control coach Jim Dray, who held that position for the last two seasons, is taking a promotion to be tight ends coach for the Chicago Bears.

Defensive line coach Brenston Buckner could also be on the way out.

According to Pro Football Network’s Aaron Wilson, Buckner is under consideration to be defensive line coach for the Jacksonville Jaguars.

What this means is that Buckner’s contract with the Cardinals is likely expiring. The Jaguars would have to have asked permission to consider him, which might have happened, but with reports that Buckner has also drawn interest from college programs like Auburn and Clemson,

Heading to the Jaguars makes some sense. Mike Caldwell is going to be their defensive coordinator. Caldwell and Buckner were both position coaches together for the Cardinals under head coach Bruce Arians. Caldwell and Buckner were teammates in 2003 with the Carolina Panthers.

If he does leave, it would mean a changeup on the defensive staff.

It is something to pay attention to over the next several days.

Cardinals D-line coach Brentson Buckner being pursued by college programs

He turned down Clemson and is now being pursued by Auburn.

The Arizona Cardinals might lose one of the coaches on their staff. Defensive line coach Brentson Buckner, in his second stint with the team, is drawing interest from college programs.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Buckner was targeted by Clemson last week for a position on Dabo Swinney’s coaching staff, a position he declined. However, he is also being targeted now by Auburn with new head coach Bryan Harsin.

The question is whether the positions he is being offered come with a better title than position coach or come with a better salary.

If he turned down Clemson, it would be hard to see him leaving the Cardinals for Auburn. But we will see in the weeks to come.

Brenston Buckner returning to Cardinals as DL coach

He returns after two seasons away from the team.

Nothing has yet been announced officially by the team but it appears the Arizona Cardinals have found their new defensive line coach. He is a familiar face.

Brentson Buckner, who was the Cardinals’ defensive line coach from 2013-2017 under head coach Bruce Arians, is returning to the team in some capacity.

First, The Athletic’s Greg Auman reported Buckner was returning after getting let go by the Oakland Raiders.

Buckner’s own Twitter account shows his return to the team.

After he left the Cardinals following Arians’ retirement, he went to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to be defensive line coach. Last year, he was defensive line coach for the Oakland Raiders. Interestingly enough, Arians was head coach for Tampa Bay in 2019, but Buckner returns to the Cardinals rather than rejoining Arians’ staff.

The Cardinals reportedly cut ties with defensive line coach Chris Achuff after the season, who held the position in 2018-2019, working with both Steve Wilks and Kliff Kingsbury.

Although still unannounced, the Cardinals have reportedly added Derius Swinton and Jim Dray as well to the coaching staff.
