Can Brenton Cox break the sack record? Alex Brown is ‘rooting’ for him

Pat Dooley talks with Alex Brown about Brenton Cox’s chances of breaking his record this year… and more.

When Alex Brown heard, he was quick to respond.

Just as he has several times before.

“I sent him a message,” Brown said. “I told him, ‘I’m rooting for you.’”

That message was sent to Florida edge rusher [autotag]Brenton Cox[/autotag], who said this during spring camp, “I’m going for a sack every half. A sack a game or a sack a half. Either way, I’ve got to get it.”

Brown hopes he does get it because the former Gator great is still a Florida fan. He knows that if his school record for sacks in a season (13) is broken it will be good news for the 2022 Florida football team.

On the one hand, it will mean that Cox plays hard every play, something he admits he didn’t do all the time last season. On the other hand, if Cox is rushing the passer that much, Florida is probably playing from ahead because the other team has to throw the ball a lot.

“That’s what happened to me because I was playing for [autotag]Steve Spurrier[/autotag] and the other team was always behind,” he said.

But he also knows it won’t be easy. If it was easy, the record wouldn’t still be standing 21 years after it was established.

And there is this.

“They didn’t know anything about me my sophomore year,” Brown said. “They know about Brenton Cox.”

In three seasons as a Gator after transferring from Georgia, Cox has a total of 13.5 sacks, way short of Brown’s career record of 33.

“I’m a little surprised the single-season record is still there, but the career mark, I think that will stand for a while,” Brown said. “The issue with Brenton is that teams know about him and will double-team him.

“But I do think the single-season record will fall in the next five years because of the quality of players [autotag]Billy Napier[/autotag] is bringing in.”

Funny, but that sack record almost never happened.

This 4-star DL completes his fourth visit to Florida this weekend

Florida priority target and four-star defensive lineman Derrick LeBlanc visited Florida for the fourth time this past weekend.

Four-star defensive lineman [autotag]Derrick LeBlanc[/autotag] made his fourth trip to Florida and the Swamp this past weekend. After his visit, he told 247Sports that the Gators continue to push all the right buttons in his recruitment.

LeBlanc is a priority target for coach [autotag]Billy Napier[/autotag] and defensive line coach [autotag]Sean Spencer[/autotag]. The 247Sports composite rankings have him as the 87th overall prospect and as the 11th best player at his position. He hails from Osceola, Florida, and is teammates with fellow four-star defensive lineman [autotag]John Walker[/autotag], who is also a top target for the Gators.

He said he really wanted to spend more time around Spencer this weekend and came away accomplishing that. Spencer showed LeBlanc film from spring practice and started quizzing him on Florida’s defense because he’s been there so many times.

The Gators need more top defensive line prospects after the previous regime struggled mightily with recruiting. LeBlanc feels like he can see the field early if he chose Florida.

He also spoke with current defensive linemen [autotag]Gervon Dexter[/autotag] and [autotag]Brenton Cox[/autotag]. They said they love the new current coaching staff and that if they could stay two more years to play for them, they would.

LeBlanc will visit Miami next weekend and will take an official visit to Penn State during the weekend of June 10. He also wants to take official visits to the Gators, Hurricanes and Oklahoma during June. He also believes that these four schools are recruiting him the hardest.
