Brendan Schaub details harrowing scene of rescuing kids from car wreck that killed mother

Brendan Schaub unexpectedly found himself caught up in a tragic situation on a Southern California freeway.

On Tuesday’s episode of “The Fighter and The Kid,” former UFC heavyweight [autotag]Brendan Schaub[/autotag] shared a harrowing story of how he rescued three kids from a horrific car wreck last week in the Los Angeles area.

According to ABC 7, a mother of four was killed on the freeway in Encino after a wrong-way crash that allegedly was intentionally caused by the victim’s husband, who drove a Lincoln SUV into oncoming traffic before crashing into a tractor trailer while the couple’s four children, all under age 9, were in the vehicle.

The children suffered only minor injuries. The mother, identified as 26-year-old Aimee Garcia, died in the wreckage. The husband, 31-year-old Cesar Iban Torres, allegedly tried to flee the scene, but he was arrested on the freeway after California Highway Patrol said he fought with officers.

Schaub said he was driving out to dinner with his girlfriend when they saw the wrecked vehicle ahead of them, with one of the kids sitting on top of the SUV waving for help. Schaub said he stopped and was the first person on the scene, along with another man. He said “debris was everywhere” with a heavy amount of gasoline leaking from the 18-wheeler.

“I’m like, ‘God, this isn’t safe,'” Schaub said. “In my head I’m like, ‘F*ck, I have kids, man. I can’t go out like this.’ But I’m thinking of those kids (in the SUV).”

Schaub said he had to smash an already broken window in order to access two kids stuck in the SUV. He described a heartbreaking moment as he pulled one of the kids out.

“In the front is a lady who passed away – brain matter everywhere, blood everywhere. And the kid’s going, ‘Mama, mama!’ I go, ‘Bubba, look at me. Look at me, don’t look over there,'” Schaub said. “He was so young, it would’ve completely f*cked him up. I look at the guy and go, ‘Get a blanket, cover his mom.’

“A lady walks up. I don’t know where she came from. I go, ‘Take these two kids and run that way, run away from the car.’ She goes, ‘Well, I think it’s better to go that way.’ And I go, ‘Don’t go that way. Because the mom’s there, and they can’t see the mom. Go that way.'”

Schaub said once the kids were removed safely from the vehicle, he went back to his car and left.

Torres, the husband and driver of the car, was arrested and charged with murder, according to TMZ. Garcia’s brother, Juan Zavala, told ABC 7 how he received a disturbing phone call from Torres before the crash.

“And he said God talked to him, and he said he has to give his family to God,” Zavala said of Torres. “And I’m like, ‘No, what are you talking about? Come back.'”

MMA MAGAs who hate socialism took government loans. Maybe there’s a lesson there | Opinion

A whole lot of right-wing MMA types lined up for socialist federal loans while they preached self-reliance. Maybe there’s a lesson to be learned.

You heard it all throughout the 2020 election campaign from conservative voices in the MMA space: Socialism is bad. The government is a nanny state. Real men are self-made. They pull themselves up by their bootstraps and get to work and would never think of taking a handout.

The UFC, and by extension the sport of MMA, became deeply tied to this message and perhaps the most active proponents of President Donald Trump’s failed reelection campaign in the American sporting landscape.

UFC president Dana White, whose relationship with Trump goes back well before the latter’s political career, spoke at the Republican National Convention, much as he did in 2016. White also led a UFC contingent to appear at Trump campaign rallies in the swing state of Nevada, and several UFC fighters also appeared with Trump at rallies in Florida.

MMA’s MAGA brigade were undefeated champions in the fight against the gluttonous pig that is the evil government.

Until it was their turn to feed from the federal trough, that is.

In response to the terrible economic disruption caused by the coronavirus pandemic, the government created two avenues to help small business owners through the CARES act, which was signed into law March 27.

One, the Economic Injury Disaster Loan program, is a low-interest loan program for which the lender has 30 years to repay. The second, the Paycheck Protection Program, helps employers meet payroll during the pandemic. If certain benchmarks are met, these loans don’t have to be paid back.

As it turns out, several prominent names in the MMA MAGA sphere had already taken their government handouts while they spoke out against the evils of socialism. In a report released Friday, Bloody Elbow took a deep dive into public records and found the following:

  • [autotag]Tito Ortiz[/autotag], current Huntington Beach mayor pro tem, longtime Trump supporter, and staunch anti-mask crusader, took out a $32,292 PPP loan June 8. The loan is in the names of both Ortiz and ‘Triple JJJ LLC.” (Does this mean the company is called JJJJJJJJJ?)
  • Miletich Fighting Systems, founded by MMA legend and outspoken libertarian Pat Miletich, took out an $8,700 PPP loan on May 1.
  • [autotag]Brendan Schaub[/autotag], granted, was not a part of the crew that went out campaigning for Trump. He did, however, use his platform to push the notion COVID was overblown early on during the pandemic, right up until he caught the virus after doing a standup comedy gig. Turns out that during the period Schaub was telling his podcast listeners COVID was no big deal, Brendan Schaub MMA found it real enough to take out a $22,427 PPP loan April 29.
  • Then there’s First Round Management, one of the sport’s largest agencies. Among its client base is Jorge Masvidal, who actively campaigned for Trump. To this day, he’s tweeting nonsense about a stolen election, to which we won’t link. FRM went to the federal till more often than anyone else on the list. It received a $4,620 PPP loan April 8, a $10,000 EIDL April 18, and a $140,000 EIDL June 30. FRM president Malki Kawa took out a $39,300 EIDL loan Aug. 4.

There were a few other big names on the list, as well, but we’re not going to name them, because, you know what? They didn’t spend most of the past year telling us how they did everything all by themselves and how government money is for weak-minded snowflakes. That also goes for the lesser-known names, by and large gym owners and smaller-scale fight promoters who were hit hard by state and local shutdowns to combat the virus.

Americans faced unprecedented hardships in 2020 during the worst public health crisis of the past century. The federal government’s role is to help people get through such situations, a belief system underscored by President-elect Joe Biden trouncing Trump by more than 7 million ballots in the popular vote. Even those who fancy themselves as the biggest and strongest need a hand sometimes. Hopefully those who preached one thing but practiced another in 2020 will show a little more humility in the future.

On Brendan Schaub and what NOT to do in the fight against COVID-19

When in doubt about coronavirus, here’s a rule of thumb: Whatever Brendan Schaub is doing, do the opposite.

In case you tuned out the news for a while on Fourth of July weekend — and honestly, even those of us who work in the business won’t blame you if you want to shut off your computer and get a break from 2020’s onslaught — here are a handful of news items that came out Friday:

The last three items actually demonstrate the UFC is doing an excellent job with its fight-week related coronavirus safety protocols. Burns was tested in Las Vegas, along with the rest of the card, UFC staff, basically all involved with travel to Abu Dhabi. By flagging a positive test, Burns was kept off the charter plane headed to the Middle East, which meant he wouldn’t expose others to the virus during a seriously long flight.

That’s the good news.

The bad news is the sheer volume of COVID-related news items shows MMA won’t be spared from the viral resurgence regardless how many precautions are taken.

Which brings us to one other news item, one we can no longer ignore: If the UFC’s strict testing protocols are the equivalent of Gallant in the classic “Highlights for Children” comic strip, then [autotag]Brendan Schaub[/autotag] is Goofus.

The former UFC heavyweight competitor has a high-profile platform with his podcast, “The Fighter and the Kid,” and has used it repeatedly to spout nonsense about coronavirus. With COVID-19 escalating (once again) in the United States at a time when the rest of the world seems to be getting a grip on things, we’re not going to link and amplify Schaub’s messages, but you can Google them yourself if you’re interested.

But there’s a new wrinkle to this: Schaub and co-host Bryan Callen recently did a stand-up comedy gig in Texas, which is losing control of the pandemic. Schaub ended up testing positive. Callen has experienced symptoms and got tested. We sincerely wish them a return to full health as soon as possible.

But even though Schaub contracted COVID-19, he still doesn’t get it. Schaub posted-then-deleted a picture of himself taking an outdoor bike ride while he still has the virus, while he’s contagious, while he should be quarantined. While there’s no location tag on the post, Schaub lives in the Los Angeles area, where California is under a statewide mandate that people must wear face coverings in the state, and Schaub was not wearing one in the photo.

It’s good Schaub is feeling better. The fact that he’s recovering is also good. But it’s not proof COVID-19 isn’t serious. Every person who came in contact with Schaub and Callen in a tightly packed club could get the virus, and they could pass it to someone in a high-risk zone.

(Want proof how this works? Here’s a story about how an 88-year old Texas grandmother ended up with the worst of a family-wide outbreak.)

The response from the far too loud, ignorant contingent in the MMA community is as tiresome as it is predictable: Bro, this is no big deal, it’s just the flu, you’re a cuck if you don’t think this is a conspiracy, I learned on YouTube the Chinese created this in a lab and also the world is flat, blah blah blah …

Here’s a question for that crowd: Would you say any of this to Khabib’s face?

But don’t take this from me, take it from comedian Bill Burr, who no one has ever accused of being politically correct.

This really shouldn’t be that tough. Wear a face covering in public. Keep six feet distance from people you don’t know. Outdoor activity is way safer than indoor, unless you’ve tested positive, in which case you should be quarantined at home.

The sooner we follow all of this, the sooner it will be safe to go see Brendan Schaub and Bryan Callen at the Chuckle Hut again. In the meantime, when in doubt about COVID-19, here’s a rule of thumb: Whatever Schaub is doing, do the opposite.

The Blue Corner is MMA Junkie’s blog space. We don’t take it overly serious, and neither should you. If you come complaining to us that something you read here is not hard-hitting news, expect to have the previous sentence repeated in ALL CAPS.
