Friday Night Notes: Oklahoma QB commit dazzles, 2 top recruits joined at hip, more

We begin in Denton, Texas.

USA TODAY High School Sports‘ Friday Night Notes is a weekly high school football recruiting recap that looks at the latest news from around the country—from the Class of 2023 to ’24 and beyond.

We begin in Denton, Texas, where one of the top quarterback recruits of the class of 2023 put on a show Thursday night in his season debut. Denton Guyer starting quarterback Jackson Arnold has committed to playing his college ball at Oklahoma, and Sooners fans should be salivating at what he put on tape last night.

In a 47-14 win over Rockwell-Heath (Texas), the five-star recruit posted some Sportscenter-worthy highlight plays.

Arnold threw three touchdown passes, including this 63-yard bomb.

Later on, Arnold also ran for a 64-yard touchdown.

Arnold is ranked No. 14 in the country and he’s the No. 5 quarterback in his class. More performances like this will have him moving up those rankings soon…

Gators leading the pack early on for this 4-star 2024 safety recruit

The Gators are working hard on the next crop of recruits, including this stand-out safety.

Billy Napier and his staff are not wasting any time getting ahead of the game when it comes to recruiting. While the 2023 class is wrapping up this fall, Florida football continues to push forward into the next round of prep prospects, especially those from within the borders of the Sunshine State.

Among those the Gators are in hot pursuit of is four-star 2024 safety [autotag]Brayshon Williams[/autotag] out of Lakeland, which is a little more than two hours south of Gainesville. The 5-foot-11-inch, 173-pound defensive back has been quiet when it comes to talking about his recruitment so far, but things are likely to pick up once the dead period ends.

“It’s been slow just because I really haven’t been going anywhere, and since I have to call coaches,” he told 247Sports. “I haven’t really been doing it as much just because I’ve had school and practice. I know that will change when it’s September 1 and coaches can start calling me.”

However, the rising junior has made his way to campus on several occasions already, including a stop during the Friday Night Lights recruiting event at the end of July, which he said was “great”. He also plans on attending the team’s season opener against the Utah Utes on September 3.

Williams is ranked No. 148 overall and No. 16 at his position nationally according to the 247Sports composite, while the On3 consensus has him at Nos. 161 and 13, respectively. Florida holds an early lead for his talents according to On3’s Recruiting Prediction Machine with a 40.9% chance of landing him while the Miami Hurricanes trail in second at 12.7% and the Georgia Bulldogs third at 10.9%.

Florida football on top for this 4-star in-state 2024 safety

The Gators are doing everything right so far in the recruitment of 2024 four-star safety Brayshon Williams.

Heading into the fall, the Florida Gators sit atop the recruitment of 2024 four-star safety [autotag]Brayshon Williams[/autotag].

The Lakeland High defensive back has already been to campus three times, and he’s planning his next trip to the Swamp, according to Gators Online. Williams will be in town for Florida’s season opener against the Utah Utes on Sept. 3.

Transferring from Lake Gibson to Lakeland has only helped Florida’s chances with Williams. Former Gators defensive back Ahmad Black is his position coach, and the school has served as a bit of a pipeline to UF recently.

“For starters, it’s kind of like tradition now because I got to Lakeland High School (laughter),” Williams said to Gators Online. “Coach P-Toney ([autotag]Patrick Toney[/autotag]) in my eyes is one of the best coaches in college football. I see a better person in me getting coached by P-Toney. Lastly, the home vibe I get there in Gainesville. It feels like I belong.”

While the Gators are leading right now, that won’t stop other Power Five programs from pursuing a recruit ranked inside the top 100 nationally by On3. [autotag]Billy Napier[/autotag] has focused on keeping in-state talent at home, and On3 ranks Williams No. 16 overall among Florida recruits.

He has offers from Alabama, Georgia, LSU, Miami, Oklahoma, Oregon and Texas A&M among others. Florida currently leads the pack with a 40.9% chance on On3’s Recruiting Prediction Machine, followed by the Hurricanes with 12.7%, the Bulldogs with 10.9% and the Aggies with 9.1%.
