Oklahoma Sooners’ Dillon Gabriel No. 10 in USATODAY Sports 2022 quarterback rankings

Oklahoma quarterback Dillon Gabriel comes in at No. 10 in USATODAY Sports quarterback rankings ahead of the 2022 season.

Just hours after Caleb Williams announced his intentions to enter the transfer portal, Dillon Gabriel flipped from his commitment to UCLA, turned east, and headed to Oklahoma.

The Sooners never looked back.

Gabriel, who had considered Ole Miss as a transfer destination before Jeff Lebby was hired away by Brent Venables and the Oklahoma Sooners, became the quarterback plan for OU. With Williams in the portal, it was all but a foregone conclusion he was gone and the likely destination was USC. Venables and Lebby committed to Gabriel about as quickly as Gabriel did to OU.

There was no faux quarterback competition. The job was handed to Gabriel who’s thrown for more than 8,000 yards in his college career and 70 touchdowns in two-plus seasons at UCF.

The Sooners’ quarterback situation may not be as highly regarded heading into 2022 as it was last offseason, but Oklahoma has a good one in Dillon Gabriel. He comes in at No. 10 in USATODAY Sports Paul Myerberg’s quarterback rankings for 2022.

After playing in just three games last season due to a broken collarbone, Gabriel reunites with former Central Florida coordinator Jeff Lebby as the Sooners’ replacement for Williams. Gabriel has thrown for 70 touchdowns against only 14 interceptions in 26 career games, with multiple scores in all but four appearances. He’s been even better against Power Five competition, with 13 touchdowns and an average of 9.1 yards per attempt in four such games in his three years with the Knights. – Myerberg, USATODAY Sports

No. 1 on the list is 2021 Heisman Trophy winner Bryce Young. Just behind him at No. 2 is 2022 Heisman favorite C.J. Stroud. [autotag]Caleb Williams[/autotag] checks in at No. 5. Surprisingly, and perhaps maybe not so surprising, is that Gabriel ranks ahead of [autotag]Spencer Rattler[/autotag], the guy who was the favorite for the Heisman heading into 2021.

Gabriel is in a good spot with a coordinator that he’s familiar with and experienced weapons in [autotag]Marvin Mims[/autotag], [autotag]Theo Wease[/autotag], [autotag]Brayden Willis[/autotag], [autotag]Eric Gray[/autotag], and an offensive line that has four guys that have started a bunch of games at the collegiate level.

As we saw during Oklahoma’s spring game, Gabriel has the tools to be a successful passer for the Sooners in 2022. His command of the offense, his accuracy, and his arm strength will help the Sooners remain one of the best offenses in the country in 2022.

Oklahoma Sooners 6th in ESPN’s future offense power rankings

The Oklahoma Sooners land at No. 6 in ESPN’s future offense power rankings.

As spring practice rages on for the Oklahoma Sooners, they’re in the midst of a turnover in the offensive system. Coming from Ole Miss, Jeff Lebby’s installing his up-tempo offense that has typically been in the top five in plays ran during his tenures with the Rebels and UCF.

Even with the turnover that Oklahoma experienced, they remain in great shape in 2022 and in the future on the offensive side of the football.

Adam Rittenberg of ESPN released his future offense power rankings for 2022. In 2021, the Oklahoma Sooners were first in the country, buoyed by former top quarterbacks Spencer Rattler and Caleb Williams and a host of talented players. A third-place finish in the Big 12, a coaching change, and a transfer portal cycle later, the Oklahoma Sooners are now sixth in the updated rankings for 2022, just one spot behind the USC Trojans.

Let’s explore what Rittenberg had to say about the Oklahoma Sooners offense and its future.

Who Oklahoma media is most intrigued to watch in Sooners spring practice

Getting ready for spring practice to kickoff, which Oklahoma Sooners are local media members most excited to watch in spring ball.

The Oklahoma Sooners kick off spring practice on Tuesday, March 21 to begin their preparations for the 2022 college football season. With so many departures in the transfer portal and to the NFL draft, and a new coaching staff in place, there’s a lot of anticipation about this year’s squad heading into spring practice.

With anticipation building, I took the opportunity to ask some of the prominent names that cover the Oklahoma Sooners in the Oklahoma City and Tulsa markets which player they were most excited to watch or follow this spring.

2022 spring preview: Projecting the offensive depth chart for the Oklahoma Sooners

Projecting the offensive depth chart with spring ball right around the corner for the Oklahoma Sooners.

The Oklahoma Sooners are less than a week away from the start of spring ball, and with everything that’s gone on over the last few months, getting on the practice field will feel like a breath of fresh air. Though workouts have been going on, this will be the first opportunity for the team to get the pads on and get to work preparing for the 2022 season.

The biggest question is how quickly can players adopt the new offensive and defensive systems Brent Venables and offensive coordinator Jeff Lebby want to install? Veterans Dillon Gabriel, Marvin Mims, Theo Wease and Brayden Willis will help the Sooners adopt Lebby’s system, but the quicker they can understand it, the better the work on the field will be.

With Lebby comes a new influence on how the offensive depth chart will look. With what we know now, let’s look at our first depth chart projection of the spring for the Oklahoma Sooners.

2022 Spring Preview: What does tight end look like for the Oklahoma Sooners?

What does the tight end position look like for Oklahoma entering the spring?

Oklahoma received steady if not spectacular play from its tight ends a season ago. Jeremiah Hall, who entered the 2022 NFL draft, finished last season as OU’s leading tight end with 32 receptions for 334 yards and four touchdowns. His receptions total and receiving touchdowns were tied for third-highest for Oklahoma and his receiving yardage ranked fifth on the team.

Where does Hall’s departure leave Oklahoma entering the 2022 spring season, and what does the tight end position group look like moving forward? We’ve broken down the wide receivers and the quarterbacks heading into spring ball, now let’s take a look at Oklahoma’s tight ends.

Dillon Gabriel slated for a breakout year with the Oklahoma Sooners

What has many optimistic about the Oklahoma Sooners contender status is Dillon Gabriel, who ESPN’s Mark Schlabach expects to breakout in 2022.

The biggest moves of the off-season came at the quarterback position for the Oklahoma Sooners. Spencer Rattler and Caleb Williams transferred out, but the Sooners weren’t left without a plan as Dillon Gabriel committed to OU soon after Williams transfer decision.

Bringing on Gabriel, coupled with the new coaching staff and several other transfer additions, is what has many thinking the Sooners are right back to where they were a year ago; favorites in the Big 12.

Over at ESPN, they had a round table discussion on several topics, but asked the question, “which quarterback will breakout this season?” Mark Schlabach of ESPN, chose Dillon Gabriel.

The move makes a ton of sense for both sides. Gabriel threw for more than 7,000 yards with 61 touchdowns and 11 interceptions in two seasons at UCF in 2019 and 2020 (he missed much of 2021 with a broken clavicle). New Oklahoma offensive coordinator Jeff Lebby was the architect of UCF’s offense in 2019, so it should be a very fruitful reunion. – Schlabach ESPN

One could make the argument that Dillon Gabriel has already experienced his “breakout.” The experience is there and the production is too. At the same time, he’s not quite the household name that quarterbacks like Bryce Young, C.J.Stroud, and to a lesser extent Caleb Williams are. The Sooners are still being slept on nationally because of the perceived drop off in quarterback talent. Right or wrong, that’s the perception.

But coming from UCF to play for the Oklahoma Sooners, Gabriel has a chance to assert himself as one of the best quarterbacks in college football. Reuniting with Jeff Lebby on a team that has a good group of wide receivers, a dynamic pass catching running back (Eric Gray), and an experienced tight end ready to breakout himself (Brayden Willis), Gabriel is set up to shine in 2022.

Gabriel has an opportunity to make a name for himself in 2022. Though the Big 12 will represent a step up in competition, he’s got the attitude and the ability to carry over his past production in a league that’s gotten more defensive over the last couple of years.

As OU looks to recapture it’s Big 12 throne from the Baylor Bears, Dillon Gabriel will be a big reason why the Sooners are Big 12 and national contenders.

ESPN’s Chris Low picks OU offensive coordinator Jeff Lebby as most sought after assistant coach in next coaching cycle

ESPN’s Chris Low selected Oklahoma offensive coordinator Jeff Lebby as his assistant coach to watch in next year’s coaching carousel.

If ESPN reporter Chris Low’s prediction comes to fruition, then Oklahoma fans just might be popping champagne when it’s all said and done. Slight exaggeration maybe, but it would no doubt be a great sign for how the 2022 season played out for the Sooners.

Low selected Oklahoma offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Jeff Lebby as the most sought after assistant coach for the next coaching carousel.

Baseball fans love the long ball, and football fans love offenses that are entertaining and can light up scoreboards. Jeff Lebby, who will be in his first season as Oklahoma’s offensive coordinator, has shown at both Ole Miss and UCF that his offenses can be balanced, creative and innovative. And with the game being as quarterback-centric as it’s ever been, Lebby’s ability to develop quarterbacks will also make him a hot commodity.

Matt Corral blossomed last season at Ole Miss under Lebby and Lane Kiffin, and while it was Kiffin’s offense, Lebby is the one who actually called the plays during the games and has a knack for calling plays at lightning speed based on formations. If UCF transfer Dillon Gabriel comes in and keeps OU’s offense rolling, Lebby will find his way on several coaching short lists following the 2022 season. – Low, ESPN.

It’s not at all difficult to envision Lebby being one of the top head coaching candidates nationally if he turns Gabriel into a Heisman Trophy candidate and Oklahoma’s offense resembles Lebby’s last three. In 2019 with Gabriel as his starting quarterback, Lebby’s UCF offense ranked second nationally in total offense averaging 540.5 yards per game and fifth nationally in scoring offense with at 43.4 points per game.

Then, at Ole Miss in 2020, Lebby and quarterback Matt Corral ranked third nationally in total offense averaging 555.5 yards per game. Corral led led the nation with his 384.9 yards of total offense per game and ranked fifth in the country with his 333.7 passing yards per contest in 2020. Ole Miss also broke the SEC record for total offense in league play during the 2020 campaign, averaging 562.4 yards per game.

Ole Miss finished No. 6 in the nation in total offense in 2021 after averaging 492.5 yards per game. Corral passed for 3,349 yards and 20 touchdowns against five interceptions in 2021.

All of that is to say that Lebby arrives at Oklahoma with quite the reputation. It will be regarded as highly impressive if Lebby can turn the Sooners’ 2022 offense into one of the nation’s best after replacing the starting quarterback, losing its leading rusher, four of its top five receiving yardage leaders and a pair of starting offensive linemen from last season.

At the quarterback position, Gabriel is a proven starter that has thrown over 8,000 yards and 70 touchdowns in his college career. OU is searching for depth at wide receiver and doesn’t have a bonafide No. 1 running back entering 2022, though.

Running backs Eric Gray and Marcus Major return and will be granted every opportunity for starring roles. OU also signed a pair of four-star running backs in Jovantae Barnes and Gavin Sawchuk that will have the chance to see the field from day one if it doesn’t click with the aforementioned two running backs.

At wide receiver, Oklahoma is bolstered by the return to good health of five-star signee Theo Wease. The Sooners bring back one of the country’s best in Marvin Mims. Jalil Farooq showcased in the Alamo Bowl that he is perhaps ready for an increased role within OU’s offense. Drake Stoops, Brian Darby and Trevon West return as well. All of those receivers will be joined by four-star signees Nic Anderson and Jayden Gibson.

On its offensive line, Oklahoma brings in Cal transfer offensive lineman McKade Mettauer who made 28 starts at right guard over the last three seasons. His presence will be a key addition along with OU’s returning starters up front in left tackle Anton Harrison, center Andrew Raym and right guard Chris Murray.

There’s some questions to be answered with this offense, but OU has good options to step in and take over leading roles.

Top 5 returning Oklahoma Sooners receiving yardage leaders for 2022

Marvin Mims leads the way for Oklahoma pass-catchers set to return in 2022. Who else returns production for OU?

There’s no getting around it. Oklahoma is replacing a lot when it comes to receiving yardage leaders. In fact, OU is set to replace four of its top five in that category.

Oklahoma’s second-leading receiver was Michael Woods II who declared for the 2022 NFL Draft. Woods caught 35 passes for 400 yards and a pair of touchdowns. The Sooners’ No. 3 receiver, Jadon Haselwood, transferred to Arkansas. Haselwood finished just behind Woods in yardage, pulling in 39 catches for 399 yards and had six touchdown receptions.

Mario Williams ranked fourth for Oklahoma with 35 receptions for 380 yards and four touchdowns, but he’s off to USC with former head coach Lincoln Riley and former starting quarterback Caleb Williams. Tight end Jeremiah Hall also declared for the 2022 NFL Draft after recording 32 grabs for 334 yards with four touchdowns.

Where does it leave Oklahoma entering 2022 with returning receiving yardage leaders?

‘Very clear what the goals were’: QB Dillon Gabriel on joining Oklahoma

Oklahoma starting quarterback Dillon Gabriel made his first public comments since joining the Sooners on “The Podcast on the Prairie.”

Admittedly, it was a whirlwind for quarterback Dillon Gabriel once he entered his name into the transfer portal on Nov. 27.

After taking several visits, Gabriel announced on Dec. 16 he would be transferring to UCLA. Part of the rationale for Gabriel’s decision was then-Ole Miss offensive coordinator Jeff Lebby’s move to join Oklahoma’s staff.

Of course, things changed quickly with the Sooners’ quarterback situation when true freshman Caleb Williams entered his name into the transfer portal on Jan. 3. It was later on that same day that Gabriel announced his commitment and transfer to OU.

What many didn’t know was that it was also the same day that Gabriel was set to start class at UCLA. Gabriel detailed as much in his first public comments since joining Oklahoma with hosts Jeremiah Hall and Brayden Willis on Wednesday’s edition of “The Podcast on the Prairie.”

“Definitely on the day of me committing, just on my side—I think a lot of people know on Caleb’s side—but on my side, a lot was just going on. I was starting school at UCLA at the time. Didn’t end up going to class, because in the NCAA there’s also a rule that, you know, there’s a couple of things you have to pass to officially be enrolled in that school. So, didn’t end up going to class on that Jan. 3 and then once obviously Caleb announced, you know, called coach Leb and there was just an open opportunity. It was a chance to play with a really good team. This school’s got a lot of history with quarterbacks, but also just with great players,” Gabriel said.

It didn’t take long for Gabriel to get acquainted with the expectations at Oklahoma either. In fact, the 6-foot, 186 pound signal-caller said those standards were clear straight away.

“I think the biggest thing is obviously, you know, not looking past there’s a conference championship, taking care of business on that side of things and then, you know, obviously, being at this caliber school, that national championship is something we always chase. That was not no unknown when I first walked in. Right when I walked in, it was very clear what the goals were. Being around guys like that, shoot, we all make each other better and we all push each other. Even in the workouts, the type of leadership we’ve got in the building, man, it’s crazy to see. I’m just blessed to be here, grateful and, shoot, we’re going to get to work,” Gabriel said.

Something else that has been made evident is that Gabriel is Oklahoma’s guy entering 2022. Lebby wasted no time on national signing day announcing that Oklahoma would proceed with Gabriel as its starter.

“Yeah, Dillon’s our guy right now as we move forward. Again, we’ve got one guy on our roster that’s thrown a college football pass. Obviously, he’s thrown a bunch of them and he’s thrown them really, really well, so we’re going to move forward that way and go get ready,” Lebby said.

Gabriel has made 25 collegiate starts and thrown for 8,037 yards and 70 touchdowns in his career, so he’s accustomed to being the guy.

“I think for me that doesn’t really change anything in terms of like continue to compete, continue to work, be who I am. That’s who I am, too, so it’s a bit easier for me, because I ain’t got to fake it. I continue to work and grind every day because that’s what a quarterback does. They set the standard, but also bring the guys around them to do the same thing. With that, it’s just continue to be cohesive, because it’s a new staff but also because it’s a new team, it’s a new squad. Just getting it all together. You know how it is every single year. That’s really the big thing. The faster we click, the more growth that can be made,” Gabriel said.

Now, it’s about the opportunity that has been presented and continuing to build the relationships with his teammates in the months leading up to the start of the 2022 college football season.

“I think just the whole opportunity in general. It’s just…a lot comes with it, but I’m also the man for the job and excited for it. I know there’s a lot of guys around me too. Just being able to be at a different program and then coming to this one, there’s a lot of great things that come with this program too that a lot of people don’t get to see. There’s a bunch of great dudes. There’s a bunch of smart dudes, too. Just great men and just being around those kind of guys just uplifts the whole program and all the guys in that building. For the most part, just a bunch of great dudes that have opened up, or let me come in with open arms and I’m grateful for it,” Gabriel said.

Gabriel reunites with Lebby in Norman. During his freshman season at UCF in 2019 with Lebby as his offensive coordinator, Gabriel passed for 3,653 yards and 29 touchdowns.

“It’s funny because I think that I’ve got the memory of the UCF Leb, but, man, dude’s grown. I can even see in the offense a lot of things that we were talking about and trying to find answers to. Now, it’s on a whole other level in a really good way. Shoot, I’m just excited. I’m glad to be back with Leb. Obviously, love being coached by him, pushed me to be a lot better than I play and gets me to play at a higher level, so that’s all I can ask for,” Gabriel said.

The Sooners open the season and the Gabriel era on Sept. 3 when they play host to UTEP.
