Aggies alumnus Braden Montgomery is ‘feeling great again’ after trade to Chicago White Sox

“I went down to Fort Myers, Florida to work with the Red Sox staff. They got me back on my feet. I’m moving around, feeling great again.”

Former Texas A&M baseball player Braden Montgomery has had a whirlwind of a year.

In 2024, Montgomery transferred from Stanford to the Aggies, quickly asserted himself as a top 10 MLB prospect and broke his right ankle during the College World Series. The injury caused Montgomery to drop to the 12th overall pick, where he was selected by the Boston Red Sox.

Montgomery was asked about his recovery on Hot Stove with Matt Vasgersian and Harold Reynolds last week on MLB Network.

“I’m doing great! I went down there to Fort Myers, Florida to work with the Red Sox staff. They were awesome. They got me back on my feet,” Montgomery said. “I’m moving around, feeling great again. Back up to sprinting, hitting and everything. Ready for the game plan.”

Last Wednesday, he was traded to the Chicago White Sox as part of a package for All-Star pitcher Garrett Crochet. Montgomery was dealt to the south side alongside Kyle Teel, Chase Meidroth and Wikelman González.

Former Texas A&M outfielder Braden Montgomery has been traded to the White Sox

Before even stepping on the field Braden Montgomery has been traded to the Chicago White Sox

The 2024 Texas A&M baseball team had a historic run ending the season as the College World Series runner-up after an exciting series against a great Tennessee Vols team.

A major reason for that run was because of Stanford transfer Braden Montgomery who came in and made an instant impact. Even with his season cut short due to injury he didn’t too down and was the biggest cheerleader for the team. Before his injury, he was on pace to hit over 30 home runs and 90+ RBIs ranking him as the top overall performer on the Aggies team.

There was some hope that Montgomery might return to A&M for his senior year, however, as an expected high first-rounder coming back realistically didn’t make sense. Montgomery was drafted by the Boston Red Sox with the 12th pick of the first round becoming one of the highest picks in the school’s history.

On Dec. 11, approximately five months after the draft and before even touching the field it was announced that Montgomery was part of a five-person trade that sent him and three others from the Red Sox to the Chicago White Sox for Garrett Crochet. No matter where he is once he finally takes the field, I’m willing to bet he will be just as impactful as he was in the Maroon & White.

After weeks of speculation, Texas A&M superstar outfielder Braden Montgomery has signed his deal with the Boston Red Sox. The franchise drafted him 12th overall during the 2024 MLB Draft.

After one year with the Aggies, Montgomery only needed one season to endear himself to the fan base, as his stellar play on the field during the 2023-2024 regular season was a huge reason for A&M’s run to the College World Series finals for the first time in program history.

Poised to steadily rise through the minor league system, Montgomery’s season-ending ankle injury is not expected to hamper his readiness for next season but was one of the main reasons A&M failed to bring home its first championship due to his regular season production.

Montgomery is an equally awesome human being. His professionalism makes him a perfect fit for one of the league’s oldest and most successful franchises. At the same time, his 27 home runs last season showed scouts how powerful he could be at the plate for years to come.

According to MLB.com’s Jim Callis, Montgomery’s deal with the Red Sox is reportedly worth $5 million.

Chicago White Sox pick Aggies senior catcher Jackson Appel in 6th round of 2024 MLB Draft

Catcher Jackson Appel joined the group of drafted Aggies on Monday as he was selected by the Chicago White Sox with the 169th overall pick.

As DJ Khaled likes to say, “Another one!” Six Texas A&M baseball players have been selected in the 2024 MLB Draft thus far.

Senior catcher Jackson Appel joined the group on Monday as he was chosen in the sixth round by the Chicago White Sox with the 169th overall pick. Two selections prior his batterymate, junior right-handed pitcher Tanner Jones, was picked by the Kansas City Royals.

Appel and Jones join juniors, outfielder Braden Montgomery and RHP Chris Cortez, sophomore LHP Ryan Prager and 2024 shortstop commit Wyatt Sanford as fellow Aggies draftees. At 12th overall to the Boston Red Sox, Montgomery became the highest draft pick in Texas A&M program history.

Cortez was selected in the second round by the Los Angeles Angels at 45th overall. Two picks later, the Pittsburgh Pirates chose Sanford. In the third round at 81st overall, Prager joined his teammate in Anaheim.

Appel comes from a family of athletes. His mom Sharon played basketball at SMU and his grandpa Jerry hooped at Arkansas.

Jackson graduated from Memorial High School in Houston. He spent his first three years in college at Penn where he racked up the accolades.

Appel was an All-Ivy League second team selection in 2022, then made the first team the following season. He was also a member of the 2023 Auburn Regional All-Tournament team.

Braden Montgomery speaks after being selected by the Boston Red Sox

Braden Montgomery take a few minutes after his draft selection to speak about the big night!

Braden Montgomery capped off a great college career by being the highest-ever Texas A&M position player to be drafted in the MLB Draft. On Sunday night, the Aggie outfielder heard his name called as the 12th pick to the storied Boston Red Sox franchise.

Montgomery came into Aggieland and instantly became a mainstay in an A&M lineup that was one of the most feared-hitting units in the country. If it wasn’t for his season-ending leg injury, he probably would have hit over 30 home runs and led the nation in RBIs.

Following his selection while putting on his Boston gear, Montgomery spent a few minutes talking about his journey to this point and what he was feeling at that moment. I think I can speak for all Aggies when I say that having Braden in Bryan-College Station was a joy to watch, and we wish him a healthy and productive pro career.

Right on brand! Texas A&M outfielder Braden Montgomery was taken 12th by the Boston Red Sox in the 2024 MLB Draft. This selection is the highest-selected Aggie position player in team history.

The former Stanford transfer came to Aggieland for the 2024 Aggie team and had an instant impact. As an elite hitter and great defender, Montgomery can make a similar impact in Boston. Montgomery showed throughout the season that he has big-league power, hitting 27 home runs on a shortened season due to injury.

If it wasn’t for a season-ending injury that took him out of the College World Series, he might have been a top 5 pick this season. However, to still be a day one top 15 pick is a testament to how great of a pro prospect Montgomery has become.

How to watch the 2024 MLB Draft

How to watch the 2024 MLB Draft, starting on Sunday night

For several stars from the 2024 Texas A&M baseball roster, the 2024 MLB Draft is just the next step in their playing careers, as three starters, including Braden Montgomery, Ryan Prager, and Chris Cortez, are predicted by several analysts to be selected in the first two rounds.

Amid Texas A&M’s legendary run to the College World Series Finals, Montgomery, who is currently slated to be selected within the first ten picks of the draft, sustained a season-ending ankle injury during the super regional round vs. Oregon, likely ending his college career after hitting 27 home runs in his first season with the program.

Prager, who returned to the mound after missing the 2023 seasons due to injury, almost immediately earned his starting role as A&M’s ace, finishing with a 9-1 record, including a 2.95 ERA and a team-high 124 strikeouts on the year. Cortez, under former pitching coach Max Weiner, all but remedied his previous issue with control, as his powerful arm produced 101 Ks with a 10-3 record 2.78 ERA.

On its face, Montgomery and Cortez might be the most MLB-ready, as Prager, who could easily end up being drafted in the first round, can still add to his repertoire if he opts to return for a final season with Texas A&M.

Starting with round one on Sunday night, here is how to watch all three rounds over the next two days:

    • Day 1: Rounds 1-2 on Sunday, July 14, which will air on ESPN
    • Day 2: Rounds 3-10 on Monday, July 15, which be available on MLB.com
    • Day 3: Rounds 11-20 on Tuesday, July 16, which will be available on MLB.com

Top 50 prospect, shortstop Wyatt Sanford, reaffirms commitment to Texas A&M baseball team

“One of the best defensive shortstops in the 2024 high school class, Wyatt Sanford has range to both sides and solid-to-plus arm strength.”

Texas A&M baseball head coach Michael Earley hasn’t wasted time since being hired, bolstering his coaching staff, retaining players in the transfer portal and recruiting top prospects from the high school ranks.

Class of 2024 shortstop Wyatt Sanford reaffirmed his commitment to the Aggies on Sunday. The 6-foot-1, 175-pound graduate of Independence High School in Frisco, Texas, is ranked No. 34 in the official MLB 2024 prospect rankings.

“One of the best defensive shortstops in the 2024 high school class, Sanford has range to both sides and solid-to-plus arm strength. There’s no doubt he can stay at the position, but his athleticism and tools would enable him to play almost anywhere on the diamond in a utility role. He produces consistent plus run times and is an asset on the bases,” MLB.com stated. “The Texas A&M recruit has a mature gap-to-gap approach and makes good swing decisions, but he has spread out more with his legs this spring in search of contact.

“He’ll probably need to rework his setup in pro ball and may top out at 15 homers per season.”

Texas A&M junior outfielder Braden Montgomery is slotted eighth in MLB’s rankings.

4 Texas A&M baseball players selected as All-Americans by D1Baseball and Baseball America

Four Texas A&M baseball players were selected as All-Americans over the last week, with an additional upperclassman being chosen Wednesday.

Four Texas A&M baseball players have been selected as All-Americans over the last week, with an additional upperclassman being chosen Wednesday amid the transfer portal madness.

Senior left-handed pitcher Evan Aschenbeck, junior outfielder Braden Montgomery and sophomores, LHP Ryan Prager and OF Jace LaViolette, were honored by Baseball America on Friday. The quartet were joined by junior RHP Chris Cortez on Wednesday as members of D1Baseball’s All-American teams. Cortez was selected to the third team.

LaViolette earned a spot on both first teams. Aschenbeck was a first team choice by D1Baseball and second team by Baseball America. Montgomery and Prager received spots on the D1Baseball second team. Montgomery was also chosen for the Baseball America second team while Prager was picked for the third team.

Fivee Aggies on D1Baseball’s squads was the most in the nation, as was the case with four among Baseball America’s teams. This was the fourth time this year that Texas A&M has had at least four players chosen for All-American units.
