Where do Kentucky Wildcats land in latest USA TODAY Sports bowl projections?

Here’s what USA TODAY Sports experts think of Kentucky’s bowl aspirations following their 20-17 upset win at Ole Miss.

Things look a lot brighter for Kentucky football after the past two weeks.

After posting a 41-6 victory over the Ohio Bobcats in their Week 4 nonconference matchup, the Wildcats scored the biggest upset of a top-ranked team this year in their first road test of the season. Mark Stoops’ team took down then-No. 5 Ole Miss last Saturday at Vaught Hemingway Stadium in a stunning 20-17 victory.

It was Kentucky’s first win against a top 10 team on the road since 1977 when they defeated Joe Paterno and the Penn State Nittany Lions, 24-20, at Beaver Stadium in Happy Valley. It was also their first win in Oxford since 1978.

At 3-2 entering their bye week, Kentucky’s hopes of extending their streak of eight consecutive bowl games are also looking a little brighter. Earlier this week, USA TODAY Sports released its latest bowl projections entering Week 6.

Analyst Erick Smith sees Kentucky playing in the Liberty Bowl in Memphis against the Oklahoma State Cowboys on Dec. 27.

It’s a bowl game that the Wildcats have played in just once. That was back in January 2009 when Rich Brooks’ team defeated East Carolina, 25-19. The win capped a 7-6 season, one of four straight winning seasons for Brooks as head coach from 2006-2009.

As for Kentucky and Oklahoma State, the two programs have never met on the gridiron. Meetings between Kentucky and a Big 12 program are rare. The last time the Wildcats met a team from the Big 12 was all the way back in 1983 — when it still the Big Eight Conference. In a battle of ‘Cats, Kentucky defeated the Kansas State Wildcats, 31-12, at Commonwealth Stadium.

Kentucky has a bye this week before facing the Vanderbilt Commodores on Oct. 12 at Kroger Field. Kentucky-Vandy was announced earlier this week as a 7:45 p.m. ET kickoff. The game will be televised on SEC Network.

UNC included in latest bowl projections despite consecutive losses

Despite losing their past two games, the Tar Heels are still projected to a postseason bowl.

The North Carolina Tar Heels’ football season quickly went from unblemished to unpromising.

UNC started the year off with consecutive wins against Minnesota, Charlotte and NC Central, despite struggling for large parts of each. North Carolina did this with new quarterbacks each week, an inexperienced receiving corps, a young offensive line and first-year defensive coordinator.

The Tar Heels were then exposed in a Week 4 loss to James Madison, facing a 31-point halftime deficit en route to a 770-50 loss. UNC gave fans false hope against archrival Duke, shutting out its archrival in the first half and building a 20-point lead, then its defense allowed 21 unanswered points in a devastating loss.

Despite the inconsistencies in its on-field play, North Carolina is still projected to a bowl game.

In its post-Week 5 bowl projections, USA Today has the Tar Heels playing South Florida in the Tampa, Fla.-based Gasparilla Bowl on Friday, Dec. 20. This projection would practically be a home game for USF, which is also located in Tampa.

It wouldn’t be UNC and USF’s first matchup with each other if they end up facing off, as the two programs played in both the 2006 and 2007 seasons. The Bulls beat the Tar Heels in both games: winning 37-20 in Chapel Hill during 2006, then 37-10 the following year in Tampa.

You could make a case for UNC and USF’s current seasons mirroring each other, with each squad losing its last two contests. The Bulls lost by 35 points to Miami (50-15) two weeks ago and at Tulane (45-10) last weekend, though they appeared on the verge of upsetting Alabama in Week 1, before the visiting Crimson Tide pulled away.

If North Carolina wants to even think about playing in a bowl game, it’ll have to start winning – fast. The Tar Heels need three more victories for bowl eligibility, while the Bulls need four more.

Where does Duke fit into the USA TODAY Sports college football bowl projections?

Duke football need one more win to reach the postseason. Here’s where USA TODAY Sports thinks they fit in the bowl picture.

It’s only October 1, and the Duke Blue Devils already sit within one win of a bowl appearance.

Duke came back in dramatic fashion against the North Carolina Tar Heels on Saturday, scoring the final 21 points of the game to remain undefeated and reclaim the Victory Bell for the first time in six years. After starting the year right on the edge with 6.0 projected wins, head coach Manny Diaz needs one win over the final seven games for a postseason berth.

USA TODAY Sports released their updated bowl projections on Tuesday, and Erick Smith pitted the Blue Devils against the Washington State Cougars in the Holiday Bowl, which is slated for December 27.

The Cougars, one of two teams competing for the Pac-12 Conference this season, recently lost their first game to a ranked Boise State team. Washington State still won its first four games of the season, including a rivalry victory over the Washington Huskies, and quarterback John Mateer leads the team with 453 rushing yards while also throwing for 1,429 yards in five games.

Despite a near-upset at the hands of Virginia Tech, the undefeated Miami Hurricanes remained in position for the conference champion berth into the College Football Playoff. The Clemson Tigers, now riding a three-game winning streak, also earned an at-large berth into the expanded field.

Duke football draws new assignment in USA TODAY Sports bowl projections

USA TODAY Sports released its updated bowl projections on Tuesday. Who are the Duke Blue Devils projected to play?

USA TODAY Sports’ Erick Smith released some updated college football bowl projections on Tuesday, and the undefeated Duke Blue Devils drew a new assignment for the first time in weeks.

After three straight weeks in the Gasparilla Bowl against South Florida, the Blue Devils were promoted to a Holiday Bowl assignment against Washington State.

Duke, one of the four remaining unbeaten teams in the ACC, beat Middle Tennessee 45-17 on Saturday to clinch its second straight 4-0 start. First-year coach [autotag]Manny Diaz[/autotag] and his team host the rival North Carolina Tar Heels, including Diaz’s former boss, in Durham this weekend to open ACC play.

The Cougars, who are also undefeated, stunned the Washington Huskies for a 24-19 victory in Week 3. Washington State also overcame a 38-24 lead in the fourth quarter against San Jose State on Saturday, scoring 22 points in the final 14 minutes to force overtime before completing the comeback in extra time.

Smith put two ACC teams, the Clemson Tigers and the Miami Hurricanes, in the 12-team College Football Playoff bracket with Miami earning the first-round bye as conference champion.

Looking at the updated bowl projections for Kentucky football

ESPN projects where Kentucky football will play during bowl season after their week four win.

The Kentucky football team was going to have a tough time this season in an expanded SEC, and with one of the most difficult schedules in the country. After four weeks, they stand at 2 – 2 with a match-up with top five Ole Miss coming up.

On Sunday, ESPN updated their 2025 season bowl projections, and Kentucky is on the list. Analysts Kyle Bonagura and Mark Schlabach went through every bowl game, and predicted the match-ups.

Bonagura has the Wildcats playing Tulane in the Birmingham Bowl. Schlabach has Kentucky in the TransPerfect Music City Bowl against the Iowa Hawkeyes.

Obviously, playing Iowa would be a more high profile game, but either would be a bit disappointing with the excitement around the team before the season.

Kentucky can certainly change things with a big win or two. They narrowly lost to Georgia, and will get chances against some other ranked SEC teams. Win a few of those, and they might find themselves in a bigger bowl game.

UNC projected to play 2024 CFP finalist after Week 3 games

The Tar Heels only need to win three more games to make a bowl. Their post-Week 3 projections didn’t change.

The North Carolina Tar Heels sit 3-0 entering Saturday’s game against James Madison, which concludes their long, 3-game homestand.

UNC was lucky to escape Minnesota with a win after Week 1, needing five made Noah Burnette kicks and a missed one from Dragan Kesich. North Carolina created significantly more breathing room in each of its past two games, beating easier opponents in Charlotte and NC Central.

If the Tar Heels are hoping of making a bowl game, they’re halfway there. Teams now have to win six games, with only one victory against an FCS team (NCCU) counting towards that total.

Good news for UNC, it’s projected to a bowl game. In USA Today’s latest bowl projections, North Carolina will play Washington in the El Paso, Texas-based Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl.

This is the same exact bowl game – and opponent – the Tar Heels were projected to after Week 2.

UNC has a lengthy history in the Sun Bowl, playing in it five times and winning twice. North Carolina most recently played in the Sun Bowl during 2016, when it lost to new ACC school Stanford. The Tar Heels’ last win in El Paso came in 1982 against Texas, when Dick Crum was the head coach.

UNC and the Huskies have never played each other before. Will they actually meet up in December?

Which bowl game did USA TODAY Sports put Duke football in during Week 3 projections?

Check out where the Duke Blue Devils fit on the bowl schedule in the latest USA TODAY Sports projections.

USA TODAY Sports’ Erick Smith released his updated bowl projections on Tuesday, and despite a disappointing win over Connecticut on Saturday, Duke football remained in his postseason field.

For the third straight week, Smith paired the Blue Devils with South Florida in the Gasparilla Bowl. The Bulls came within 15 minutes of upsetting the Alabama Crimson Tide in Week 2, having possession while trailing by a single point at the start of the fourth quarter, but four late Alabama touchdowns created a lopsided 42-16 final margin.

The Blue Devils are favored by two touchdowns over Middle Tennessee in Week 4, a win that would improve first-year head coach Manny Diaz to 4-0. ESPN FPI, in turn, thinks Duke has more than a 77% chance to win six games.

Two different ACC teams, the Miami Hurricanes and the Clemson Tigers, made the 12-team College Football Playoff field. Miami clinched a semifinal appearance as the conference champion, but both teams lost their first game in Smith’s projections. A dozen ACC teams made the bowl calendar in total.

CBS Sports predicts fascinating bowl matchup for LSU against Big Ten team

The Tigers have a thin margin for error if they want to remain in College Football Playoff contention.

Two weeks into the 2024 season, LSU already has some ground to make up if it wants to be in College Football Playoff contention by the end of the season.

A loss to USC in Week 1 made the margin for error fairly thin when this team gets to SEC play, and in his latest bowl projections, CBS Sports’ Jerry Palm predicts a landing spot that would probably be widely viewed as disappointing for Tigers fans.

Palm has LSU playing in the Music City Bowl in Nashville on Dec. 30, but he does project an interesting matchup against a Nebraska team searching for its first bowl berth since 2016.

The Cornhuskers look improved in Year 2 under Matt Rhule after a convincing win over Colorado, but LSU will hope it draws a more high-profile postseason matchup than the Music City Bowl.
