Latest bowl projection for Tennessee football in Week 13

Updated bowl projection for Tennessee football in Week 13.

Two weeks remain in the regular-season ahead of conference championship games in Week 15.

Tennessee (8-2, 5-2 SEC) will host UTEP (2-8, 2-5 C-USA) on Saturday in its final regular-season home game at Neyland Stadium. Kickoff between the Vols and Miners is slated for 1 p.m. EST and can be watched on SEC Network+. Lowell Galindo (play-by-play), Foz Whitaker (analyst) and Marilyn Payne (sideline reporter) will be on the call.

Saturday’s Week 13 contest will also mark senior day for the Vols.

“Everyone keeps asking me if I’m excited or ready for it, and I don’t really know how to feel about it,” Tennessee senior tight end Miles Kitselman said of Saturday’s game. “I’m definitely sad. I don’t think the emotions have quite hit me yet. I wish I had a lot more time here in Knoxville, it’s a great place. I think I have enjoyed my time here a lot. I’m just really excited to go out there and play in Neyland. Hopefully not for the last time, but I’m just really excited.”

Ahead of the Tennessee-UTEP game, updated college football bowl projections were released. USA TODAY projects the Vols to play Illinois in the Citrus Bowl on Dec. 31.

Where are the Duke Blue Devils in the latest USA TODAY Sports bowl projections?

Check out where the Duke Blue Devils fit on the college football bowl schedule in the latest USA TODAY Sports projections.

With seven wins in their first 10 games, the Duke Blue Devils have done more than cement their place on the bowl calendar. Head coach [autotag]Manny Diaz[/autotag] and his team look poised for a primary spot on the schedule.

According to the latest projections from USA TODAY Sports’ Erick Smith, Duke fans can book a trip to the Duke’s Mayo Bowl for a January 3rd game against the Minnesota Golden Gophers.

The Golden Gophers have rebounded well from a 2-3 start to the season. They beat the USC Trojans, UCLA Bruins, and a ranked Illinois Fighting Illini squad during a recent four-game win streak. Minnesota already reached six wins, which is helpful with a closing schedule that includes the Penn State Nittany Lions and Wisconsin Badgers.

Smith still thinks the Miami Hurricanes are in line for the ACC title, setting them up for a first-round bye in the College Football Playoff bracket. The SMU Mustangs, Miami’s likely opponent in the championship game, didn’t make the 12-team field.

CBS Sports includes Florida in bowl projections after LSU upset

With Florida just one win away from becoming bowl eligible, CBS Sports’ Jerry Palm has included the Gators in his latest bowl predictions update.

Florida’s path to a bowl game has been in doubt all season long, but an upset win over the LSU Tigers on Saturday has the Gators just one win away from securing bowl eligibility.

As a result, CBS Sports’ Jerry Palm has included the Orange and Blue in its post-Week 12 bowl predictions. Palm projects Florida to matchup with Arizona State in the Las Vegas Bowl on Dec. 27 at 10:30 p.m. ET.

Should that prediction come true, it would provide Billy Napier and the Gators a chance at redemption after falling, 30-3, against the Oregon State Beavers in the 2022 Las Vegas Bowl. Adam Mihalek’s fourth-quarter field goal kept Florida’s now 458-game scoring streak alive, but the rest of the game was a complete disappointment.

The Gators finished the 2023 season 5-7 and failed to reach bowl eligibility, so any postseason appearance would be a sign of improvement for Napier and Co. Of course, Florida must win one of its final two games against Ole Miss and Florida State to reach the six-win mark.

Florida is projected to beat a 1-9 Florida State team in the regular-season finale, especially with true freshman quarterback [autotag]DJ Lagway[/autotag] back in the fold.

Who does Duke football draw in the latest USA TODAY Sports bowl projections?

Check out where the latest bowl projections from USA TODAY Sports have the Duke Blue Devils.

With seven wins in their first 10 games of the season, the Blue Devils could really work their way into the prestigious parts of the bowl calendar with another victory or two.

After Duke’s 29-19 victory over the NC State Wolfpack in Week 11, USA TODAY Sports’ Erick Smith pitted the Blue Devils against Minnesota in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl on January 3rd in his updated projections on Tuesday.

The Duke’s Mayo Bowl has become something of a crowd favorite in recent years thanks to its zaniness, embracing a jay of mayonnaise named Tubby as a mascot and dunking winning coaches in mayo instead of Gatorade.

The Golden Gophers have also cemented their bowl eligibility with a 6-4 record to start the season, including wins over the USC Trojans and UCLA Bruins.

Despite their first loss of the season to Georgia Tech on Saturday, Smith still thinks the Miami Hurricanes end up as the ACC champion in the College Football Playoff. He had Cam Ward and the Hurricanes losing to the Alabama Crimson Tide in the quarterfinals.

Are the Oklahoma Sooners bowling in latest Bowl Projections?

Did the Oklahoma Sooners make the cut in USA TODAY Sports latest Bowl Projections after week 10?

The Oklahoma Sooners are a win away from qualifying for a bowl game after their 59-14 win over Maine. Bowl eligibility on the line in November wasn’t what anyone expected but with the way the season has gone, expectations have recalibrated.

Earning a bowl game allows the Sooners to get extra practice in, which would give them a headstart on the 2025 season. In particular, it would give the Sooners young offensive linemen critical snaps to prepare to compete for a starting job next season.

With games against Missouri, Alabama, and LSU remaining, three top 25 teams, the Sooners will have to pull off an upset to earn a postseason bowl berth. But USA TODAY Sports believes the Sooners will get there. College Football writer Erick Smith projects the Sooners to make the Texas Bowl, which takes place on Dec. 31 in Houston at NRG Stadium.

Their opponent would be a red-hot Baylor Bears team that’s won three in a row, beating Texas Tech, Oklahoma State, and TCU. In the three wins, they’ve averaged 44 points per game and, in the process, made head coach Dave Aranda’s seat a little cooler.

The last time the two teams met was in 2022, when Baylor beat the Sooners 38-35. The Bears have won the last two matchups. The Sooners’ last win came with Caleb Williams under center towards the end of the 2021 season.

Oklahoma’s search for that elusive sixth win begins when they take on the [autotag]Missouri Tigers[/autotag] this Saturday evening in Columbia.

Duke Blue Devils headed to Duke’s Mayo Bowl in new USA TODAY Sports projections

Duke football drew one of the more popular bowl games on the schedule in new projections from USA TODAY Sports.

The Duke Blue Devils seem like a strong candidate for the Duke’s Mayo Bowl this season.

The newest USA TODAY Sports projections from Erick Smith released on Tuesday paired the 6-2 Blue Devils with the Iowa Hawkeyes in the popular bowl game.

The Hawkeyes, long known for their defensive prowess under head coach Kirk Ferentz, are off to a 5-3 start in 2024 thanks to three wins in their first five conference games. The Iowa defense is allowing 19.0 points so far this season, its ninth straight year surrendering fewer than 20.0 points per game.

The Duke’s Mayo Bowl has become a fan favorite on social media thanks to some unique traditions like its mascot, a jar of mayonnaise named Tubby. The winning coach gets a mayo bath instead of a Gatorade bath, and former ESPN commentator Mike Golic Jr. went viral for dunking an Oreo in mayonnaise during the 2021 edition of the game.

CBS Sports writer Jerry Palm put the Blue Devils in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl in his Week 10 update as well, albeit against the defending national champion Michigan Wolverines.

What does CBS Sports say about Oklahoma’s Bowl Chances?

CBS Sports thinks OU could miss the postseason entirely for the first time since 1998.

The Oklahoma Sooners will take on the Ole Miss Rebels on Saturday, looking to break a two game losing streak and get back in the win column.

It’s also an important game for OU’s postseason hopes, as at 4-3 the Sooners are suddenly in grave danger of missing a bowl game. They’ve got to find two more wins on their schedule in order to get to 6-6, otherwise, they’ll miss the postseason for the first time since 1998.

CBS Sports college football witter Will Backus released his Bowl Eligibility Heat Check on Friday as we head into week nine of the college football season. Plenty of big names are in danger of missing a bowl game, and Oklahoma was, of course, included in Backus’ piece.

“No one necessarily expected Oklahoma to hit the ground running when it arrived in the SEC, but it was also hard to anticipate that the Sooners would be mentioned in the same breath as the Mississippi States of the conference (no offense to Mississippi State, at least the Bulldogs know how to actually score the football),” Backus said. “Oklahoma’s offense has been such a disaster that the Sooners let offensive coordinator Seth Littrell go just seven games into his tenure as a full-time assistant. [autotag]Brent Venables[/autotag] certainly hit the nail on the head when he called the offense an “abomination” — Oklahoma scored a combined 12 points in its last two losses to Texas and South Carolina. Traditionally, being two wins away from a bowl is a decent spot to be in one week out from November. But then you look at Oklahoma’s schedule, which features one game that it should win and four that — if recent results are any indication — it would be lucky to compete in.”

Of course, those four games where OU will be huge underdogs are Ole Miss, Missouri, Alabama, and LSU. It’s not that the Sooners couldn’t beat those teams if they played like they were expected to when the season began. No one has any faith in the offense right now to do anything useful or helpful to win football games.

A home game against Maine, out of the FCS, should be one of the two wins that the Sooners need, but Oklahoma is going to have to pull off a major upset somewhere along the line if they want to play in a bowl game. It’s an unfamiliar spot for this proud program, to say the least.

Venables’ team will have four chances to do so, beginning in Oxford, Mississippi, at 11:00 a.m. on ESPN against the Rebels.

Pair of Big 12 teams in latest CFP projection, BYU not among them

Despite perfect record, BYU not among CFP projections.

The Big 12’s college football regular season is roughly halfway through with each team having played four conference matchups. With five conference games left on each team’s remaining slate, there is still plenty to be determined with the Iowa State Cyclones and BYU Cougars leading the way. Iowa State is the highest-ranked team in the latest US LBM Coaches Poll checking in at No. 10 overall, BYU is on their heels at No. 12.

Beyond the top two teams in the conference, it is crowded at the top with six teams separated by just a game. One of those teams is the Colorado Buffaloes, who just keep winning football games in an impressive turnaround from Year 1 of the Deion Sanders era. The start of the season was a bit rough but Shedeur Sanders and Travis Hunter have this team humming along. This week the Buffs take on Cincinnati at home.

Before we dive into Week 9 action, Erick Smith of USA TODAY Sports released his weekly bowl projections. There are two teams from the conference projected to make the College Football Playoffs and one of them is not BYU.

College Football Playoff Projections

Despite a close call the last time out against the UCF Knights, who have been hot and cold, the Iowa State Cyclones are very much in the thick of the CFP chase. They land at No. 11 overall in Smith’s projections and would face the Oregon Ducks in Eugene in the opening round. That is a tough matchup but perhaps they beat the Ducks in a bowl game again, just as they did in the 2020-21 Playstation Fiesta Bowl?

As for the second team in the projections who hails from the Big 12 we have the Kansas State Wildcats. It might surprise some to see BYU get overlooked but the Wildcats are a proven commodity. They get the nod and based on the projection are viewed as the favorite to win the conference. The only argument and a valid one is BYU’s 38-9 win over Kansas State in Provo, Utah, on Sept. 21.

  • Iowa State vs Oregon (Campus site CFP first-round matchup)
  • Kansas State vs Texas (Fiesta Bowl, CFP quarterfinal matchup)

Big 12 Bowl Projections

Of the 16 teams in the conference, 11 are going bowling according to the latest projections.

  • Oklahoma State vs Maryland (Guaranteed Rate Bowl)
  • Cincinnati vs Vanderbilt (Liberty Bowl)
  • Utah vs Missouri (Las Vegas Bowl)
  • Colorado vs Duke (Holiday Bowl)
  • Texas Tech vs Pittsburgh (Pop-Tarts Bowl)
  • BYU vs Washington State (Alamo Bowl)
  • Arizona State vs Tulane (Independence Bowl)
  • TCU vs South Carolina (Texas Bowl)
  • West Virginia vs Marshall (First Responders Bowl)

Who gets left out of the postseason

The teams that are left out of the postseason projection all share an identical 1-3 conference record. The only team with one conference win that is projected to make the postseason is the Utah Utes, who are currently 4-3 overall. The Oklahoma State Cowboys are the only team in the Big 12 with a conference win at 0-4, were included in the postseason bowl projections. That’s a bold move Cotton, let’s see if it works out for them.

  • Houston (2-5, 1-3)
  • Baylor (3-4, 1-3)
  • Kansas (2-5, 1-3)
  • UCF (3-4, 1-3)
  • Arizona (3-4, 1-3)

Duke football slated to play Deion Sanders and Colorado in new bowl projections

The latest bowl projections from USA TODAY Sports have the Duke Blue Devils playing Deion Sanders and the Colorado Buffaloes.

The Duke Blue Devils already have six wins in 2024, so the only question about the upcoming bowl schedule is where they will go and who they will play. And the latest projections from USA TODAY Sports have quite the matchup for head coach Manny Diaz.

According to Erick Smith on Tuesday, the Blue Devils drew the Deion Sanders and the Colorado Buffaloes in the Holiday Bowl, which is scheduled for December 27 in San Diego, California.

Sanders, in his second season at the helm of the Colorado program, has the Buffaloes rolling. They’ve won five of their first seven games, including a dramatic overtime victory over Baylor that included a game-tying Hail Mary on the final play of regulation. Two-way star Travis Hunter is a Heisman contender with 51 receptions for 604 yards and six touchdowns as a wideout and two interceptions and a forced fumble on defense, and quarterback Shedeur Sanders is fifth among FBS quarterbacks in both passing yards (2,268) and passing touchdowns (19).

The Blue Devils would provide a worthy challenge for Sanders and the Colorado passing attack. Duke is surrendering 4.9 yards per attempt through the air, one of four defenses in the country averaging fewer than five yards per throw.

Smith also had the Miami Hurricanes and Clemson Tigers making the College Football Playoff from the ACC, but he actually thinks that Dabo Swinney and the Tigers win the conference and earn the first-round bye despite Miami being the undefeated team right now.

Duke Blue Devils slated for one of the earliest bowl games in CBS Sports projections

After seven weeks of the college football season, CBS Sports has Duke slated for one of the earliest bowl games on the calendar.

The Duke Blue Devils are a virtual lock for the college football postseason with five wins in their first six games, but as of Week 8, CBS Sports doesn’t think Duke would need to wait very long for a bowl assignment.

The site’s projections have the Blue Devils facing off against the Miami-Ohio RedHawks in the Boca Raton Bowl on December 18th.

The game, which takes place at Florida Atlantic University’s stadium, takes place less than three weeks after the end of the regular season.

The RedHawks, last year’s Mid-American Conference champions after upsetting Toledo in the championship game, have lost four of their first six games of the season. However, three of those losses came against Northwestern, Cincinnati, and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, so a torrid closing stretch to reach six wins isn’t out of the question.

The Miami Hurricanes, still undefeated despite double-digit deficits against Virginia Tech and California, remain in line for the automatic bye as conference champions. The Clemson Tigers, as the 10th seed, are the only other ACC program in the 12-team field.
