Bowfisherman shoots record brown trout, sparking anger online

“Absolute waste of a trophy trout,” one critic wrote in response to the announcement by South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks.

South Dakota last week recognized a new state bowfishing record for brown trout, stirring anger on social media.

“New state record alert!” South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks exclaimed via social media. “Ty Smith broke a record in the ‘bowfishing’ category with this 6lb, 12oz brown trout out of Lake Oahe. Congratulations, Ty!”

The issue some had was that brown trout are prized by most hook-and-line anglers (notably fly anglers) as a catch-and-release species. Trophy-size trout, they maintain, ought to be returned to the water.

“Absolute [waste] of a trophy trout, no records broken only a giant lost,” reads the top Facebook comment, which garnered more than 600 reactions.

South Dakota keeps hook-and-line records in a separate category.

Bowfishing records are part of a larger category described as “unrestricted records.” Unrestricted methods include spearing, snagging, and bow-and-arrow.

“I didn’t know this was a thing, or even ethical or legal,” one follower chimed in, in reference to bowfishing.

While many were critical of Smith, lots of followers were supportive.

A sampling:

–“Awesome trophy and great eating! The great sport of bowfishing continues to be awesome!”

–“Probably cooked up just fine.”

–“Fly fishermen are liberals of the sport.”

For those wondering, the South Dakota hook-and-line record for brown trout stands at 24 pounds, 8 ounces, for a fish caught (and kept) at Canyon Lake in 1990.

The world record is listed as a 44-pound, 5-ounce brown trout caught in New Zealand in 2020.

Bowfisherman shoots world-record fish, adds to ‘collection’

One day last month after work, Mitchell Dering of Missouri decided to go bowfishing and wound up adding to his “collection” of record fish, this one a world record.

He was bowfishing at Duck Creek Ditch #105 on March 14 and “just got lucky, honestly,” Dering told the Missouri Department of Conservation. “We shoot a lot of smaller fish. I knew it was a bullhead, but didn’t know it was a brown bullhead. But I knew it was large for its size.”

He found out just how big the next day when he had MDC Southeast Regional Office staff weigh it on a certified scale in Wappapello. It weighed 4 pounds, and easily surpassed the state record of 2 pounds, 7 ounces caught from Wappapello Lake in 1994.

But it also qualifies as a bowfishing world record, which currently stands at 3 pounds, 4 ounces for a brown bullhead.

“That’s honestly pretty awesome,” Dering told MDC. “I’ve bowfished for quite a while. We’ve won a few tournaments in Kentucky and Tennessee and placed in numerous other tournaments. That’s cool [qualifying for a world record], I didn’t know that.”

Dering briefly held the state record for spotted gar in 2019 before it was broken. He told MDC he’s now working on his collection of state records, and plans to get his bullhead mounted.

“I’ve never mounted anything before,” he said. “I broke the state record for spotted gar a few years ago, but some guy broke the record two years later so it’s not in the record books anymore. But I’m working on getting me a collection of state records. I guess potentially world records now!”

A South Carolina bow fisherman has been granted a world record after landing a nearly 85-pound blue catfish on Jan. 6 at Santee Cooper Lakes.

Stuart Vandyke also established a new state record, according to the Bowfishing Assn. of America.

Vandyke “arrowed” the massive catfish just weeks after his friend, David Ard, hauled in an 80-pound blue catfish at Santee Cooper to set the state and world record.

Wrote Carolina Fish and Hunt: “Once [Vandyke’s] arrow pierced the fish, he knew it would be big enough to vie for the record. He and his friends wrestled it aboard, then called a friend with a certified scale.

“They weighed the fish and got it entered into the Bowfishing Assn. of America’s record book, ending Ard’s short-lived status as world record holder.”

Vandyke’s catfish weighed 84.8 pounds.

His state and world record are recognized by the Bowfishing Assn. of America. The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources only recognizes bowfishing records for bowfin, carp, and longnose gar.

For comparison, the South Carolina rod-and-reel record for blue catfish stands at 113.8 pounds.

The rod-and-reel world record is listed at 143 pounds, for a 2011 catch at Virginia’s Kerr Lake.
