Former Red Sox manager John McNamara dies at 88 and 1986 stirs through Boston

Former Red Sox manager John McNamara has died at 88 and the ill feelings from the 1986 World Series resurfaced

A fantastic piece of writing by Boston Globe columnist Dan Shaughnessy on the death of former Boston Red Sox manager John McNamara Tuesday in Tennessee at 88. His complicated legacy was never more apparent, 34 years after the 1986 World Series.

McNamara’s widow, Ellen, spoke to Shaugnessy and addressed the issue of whether her husband took Roger Clemens out of Game 6 in the eighth innng with a 3-2 lead in the game and Series before the historic collapse against the New York Mets.

“Game 6 is always going to be hanging over him,” she started.

“I just want to say one thing: My husband did not take Roger Clemens out of that game,” she insisted without solicitation. “Roger asked out of the game. He said he had a little cut or something.

“It tore John up that the press believed Clemens. John would not make something like that up. When Roger told him he wanted to come out, John said, ‘You’ve got to be [expletive] me!’ That’s what happened. When the chips were down, Roger spit the bit.

“That’s what happened, and I will believe John until I take my last breath. Why would John have taken out his best pitcher there? I couldn’t believe that anyone bought that crap. John deserves to have a better sendoff than for anybody to be critical of him.”

Just like that, it was Oct. 25, 1986, at Shea Stadium again for Bostonians. And despite four World Series championships since the wounds remain brutal.

Shaugnessy reached out to Clemens, who was 24-4 that season, and got text responses:

I informed Clemens, via text, that Ellen McNamara made some harsh remarks concerning his role in Game 6. He responded with, “Interesting. I think after Fish [pitching coach Bill Fischer] corrected him on the non-truthful things, they didn’t talk much after that. Need to focus on the positives . . .

“Sorry to hear of the passing of John. We had great success with him as our manager. All of us played extremely hard for him, Fish, and all the coaching staff. A lot of great memories!”

Shaughnessy concluded with a text from Ellen McNamara:

“I do not want John’s professional career defined by one game,” she wrote. “He was so much more than that. A good, kind, loving man.”

In all, McNamara was 1,160–1,233 over parts of 19 seasons, also winning the NL West title with the Reds in 1979 and leading Cincinnati to the best record in baseball in the strike-shortened 1981 season, when they did not make the playoffs. He was the 1986 AL Manager of the Year.

New York Mets at Boston Red Sox odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Tuesday’s New York Mets at Boston Red Sox sports betting odds and lines, with MLB betting picks, tips and best bets.

After taking the first game of the series by a 7-4 count, the New York Mets (2-2) will once again take on the Boston Red Sox (1-3) Tuesday night. The first pitch from Fenway Park is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET. We analyze the Mets-Red Sox betting odds and lines, with MLB picks and best bets.

Mets at Red Sox: Projected starting pitchers

LHP David Peterson vs. LHP Matt Hall

Peterson will be making his MLB debut tonight after posting a 3-6 record with a 4.19 ERA in 24 starts at Class-AA last season.

  • He struck out 9.5 batters per nine innings last year , but his WHIP left something to be desired at 1.345.
  • Peterson was a first-round pick by the Mets in 2017 but has yet to rise past Class-AA.

Hall has never started a game in the majors and has appeared in only 21 games across the last two seasons with the Tigers.

  • In his career, Hall has a 9.48 ERA but has averaged 9.2 strikeouts per nine innings pitched.
  • This will be his first appearance against the Mets, but in his lone interleague game, he allowed one home run in 1 1/3 innings.

Prediction

Mets 8, Red Sox 6

Moneyline (ML)

The Mets’ bats finally came alive against the Red Sox Monday night, and I’d expect that to continue against Hall. They’ve gotten solid performances from their starting staff, and if the bats begin to heat up, New York will go on a run.

At -115, the METS are still a good value on the moneyline because this is a game they should win. They just have to hope Peterson can keep Boston’s bats somewhat quiet.

New to sports betting? A $10 bet on the Mets to win returns a profit of $8.70.

Run line/Against the spread (ATS)

The Mets are -1.5 (+120) on the run line, but that’s a spread they should be able to cover. It’ll come down to pitching with a rookie on the bump, but it’s not as if Boston is trotting out an ace.

Bet the METS (+120) against the spread while expecting them to win by at least two runs.

Over/Under (O/U)

Once again, Mets-Red Sox has the highest total of the night at 11.5 runs. There’s plenty of unpredictability with each team’s pitcher, but both squads possess potent lineups.

Mets 1B Pete Alonso will begin to heat up, as should Red Sox SS Xander Bogaerts and DH J.D. Martinez. Bet the OVER 11.5 (-110) tonight.

New York Mets at Boston Red Sox odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Monday’s Mets at Red Sox sports betting odds and lines, with MLB betting picks, tips and best bets.

The New York Mets (1-2) will make the short trip north to take on the Boston Red Sox (1-2) on Monday. First pitch is scheduled for 7:35 p.m. ET from Fenway Park. We analyze the Mets-Red Sox betting odds and lines, with MLB picks and best bets.

Mets at Red Sox: Projected starting pitchers

RHP Michael Wacha vs. LHP Josh Osich

Wacha is in his first season with the Mets after going 6-7 with a 4.67 ERA with the Cardinals in 2019.

  • Wacha has never faced the Red Sox but is 6-7 with a 4.02 ERA in interleague play in his career.
  • He’s 39-19 all-time against teams that are below .500.

Osich will operate as the Red Sox’s opener and won’t be a true starting pitcher Monday.

  • He has appeared in one game so far this season, pitching one inning with one hit allowed and a strikeout.
  • Osich has never started a game in the majors and owns a career ERA of 4.86.

Prediction

Mets 7, Red Sox 5

Moneyline (ML)

The moneyline for each team is set at -106, almost making it a pick-em. Neither team is off to a great start this season, going 1-2 in their first three games, but the Mets are the wiser bet in this one.

With Wacha on the bump against an opener in Osich, New York is at an immediate advantage. Boston doesn’t lack offense, but the pitching staff is weak, and that’ll show tonight against reigning NL Rookie of the Year Pete Alonso and the rest of the solid-to-great Mets lineup.

Bet on the METS to win outright. (New to sports betting? A $10 bet on the Mets to win returns a profit of $9.43.)

Run line/Against the spread (ATS)

The Mets are favored by 1.5 runs on the road tonight, which doesn’t come as much of a surprise. The Red Sox aren’t rich with bullpen arms, and going with an opener will put them at a disadvantage. They’ll keep it close thanks to their bats but will still fall by two runs.

Bet the METS (+135) to cover the run line.

Over/Under (O/U)

The over/under is set at 11 runs, the highest total of any game Monday night. Each team’s offense can score in a hurry, and neither Wacha nor Osich is dominant.

Bet the OVER (-110) in this one.

Baltimore Orioles at Boston Red Sox odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Saturday’s Baltimore Orioles at Boston Red Sox sports betting odds and lines, with MLB betting picks, tips and best bets.

The Baltimore Orioles (0-1) continue their series against the division rival Boston Red Sox (1-0) Saturday at Fenway Park for a 1:35 p.m. ET first pitch. We analyze the Orioles-Red Sox MLB betting odds and lines, with betting advice and tips around the matchup.

Orioles at Red Sox: Projected starting pitchers

RHP Alex Cobb vs. LHP Martin Perez

Cobb was limited to just three starts with the Orioles in 2019, posting an 0-2 record, 10.95 ERA and 1.86 WHIP across only 12 1/3 innings before suffering what was called a lumbar strain. He later ended up having surgery for a hip impingement.

  • Cobb didn’t face the Red Sox in 2019, but he was 1-2 with a 5.82 ERA and .361 opponent batting average across 17 innings over three starts vs. Boston in 2018.
  • Cobb is winless in his past six appearances in the month of April, last winning in the season’s opening month on April 26, 2017 as a member of the Tampa Bay Rays in Baltimore against his current team.

Perez will make his first start as a member of the Red Sox after coming over in the offseason after one year with the Minnesota Twins. His first seven seasons in the majors were with the Texas Rangers.

  • The southpaw picked up 10 victories last season in 17 decisions, posting a 5.12 ERA and subpar 1.52 WHIP across 29 starts and three relief appearances for the Twins.
  • The Venezuelan won his only start at Fenway Park last season for the Twins. He was also 2-0 with a 3.75 ERA and six strikeouts over 12 innings in two outings against the O’s.

Prediction

Red Sox 9, Orioles 6

Moneyline (ML)

The RED SOX (-209) are heavy chalk against the Orioles (+185), who simply cannot be trusted. Boston improved to 15-6 in its past 21 at home vs. Baltimore after Friday’s series-opening 13-2 rout. The Red Sox are 36-16 in their last 52 meetings vs. the Orioles.

New to sports betting? A $10 bet on the Red Sox (-209) to win straight up nets a return of just $4.78.

Run line/Against the spread (ATS)

The RED SOX (-1.5, -110) are a much better value on the run line than eating all of that chalk on the moneyline. Even with OF Mookie Betts now playing his baseball in Los Angeles with the Dodgers, the Red Sox have more than enough firepower to put away the Orioles in the ultra-competitive AL East. Boston’s bats were certainly alive and well in Game 1.

Over/Under (O/U)

OVER 10.5 (-110) is the play here. Cobb could be rather rusty while making his first start since late April 2019, and Perez is always very hittable and yields plenty of runs. It wouldn’t be surprising to see a run total well into the double digits.

The Baltimore Orioles travel to meet the division rival Boston Red Sox Friday at Fenway Park for a 7:30 p.m. ET first pitch. We analyze the Orioles-Red Sox MLB betting odds and lines, with betting advice and tips around the matchup.

Orioles at Red Sox: Projected starting pitchers

LHP Tommy Milone vs. RHP Nathan Eovaldi

The journeyman southpaw Milone posted a dismal 4-10 record with a 4.76 ERA and 94 strikeouts last season for the Seattle Mariners.

  • Milone hasn’t faced the Red Sox since 2016. That might be a good thing, as he was hammered for eight runs – four earned – on 10 hits in just 4 2/3 innings in a loss at Fenway Park as a member of the Minnesota Twins July 24, 2016.
  • The southpaw was actually better on the road than at home last season. Away from Seattle, he was 3-4 with a respectable 3.91 ERA across 50 2/3 innings over two starts and nine relief appearances. However, he was 1-6 with a 5.56 ERA at home.

Eovaldi struggled with a 2-1 record, 5.99 ERA and 1.58 WHIP with 70 strikeouts and 35 walks across 12 starts and 11 relief appearances in ’19.

  • Eovaldi was tagged for eight earned runs on six hits and seven walks with just four strikeouts in seven innings across two starts vs. Baltimore last year, going 0-1 with a 10.29 ERA.
  • He also didn’t fare well at Fenway Park last season, going 0-1 with a 7.20 ERA, 29 K’s and 22 walks across 30 innings over five starts and seven relief showings.

Red Sox

Prediction

Red Sox 6, Orioles 4

Moneyline (ML)

The Orioles (+180) might be a tempting play on the road, but AVOID. The Red Sox (-209) are heavily favored for a reason, even if they’re expected to be a mediocre team overall. Boston is 14-6 in their past 20 at home vs. Baltimore, and 35-16 in the previous 51 meetings overall.

New to sports betting? A $10 bet on the Red Sox (-209) to win straight up nets a return of just $4.78.

Run line/Against the spread (ATS)

The RED SOX (-1.5, -115) are a better play, albeit make it just a small-unit wager. Boston is not expected to be a championship-caliber team, but Baltimore is likely to be terrible again. The BoSox might get off to a fast start against their overwhelmed rivals.

Over/Under (O/U)

OVER 9.5 (-110) is worth playing, but don’t get carried away with a big bet. The starting pitchers are pretty horrendous in this one, and we could see both sides go to the bullpen early. As such, the offenses for both sides could get off to a bit of a quick start.

MLB world reacts to Mookie Betts’ record-breaking $365M extension with the Dodgers

Mookie Betts just signed the biggest extension in MLB history.

Mookie Betts is going to be a member of the Los Angeles Dodgers for way more than just 60 games as he signed a 12-year extension with the team on Wednesday that is worth a reported $365 million, per ESPN’s Jeff Passan. That, along with the $27 million he will make this season, means he’s just under the $400 million mark with LA.

That also means that Boston Red Sox fans, who for some reason held out hope that he’d return with a free agent deal after this season, are sad because Mookie isn’t coming back to Boston any time soon.

The Dodgers have a ridiculously talented team this season and now for likely many years to come with the second best player in MLB locked in for the next 13 years.

Here are the details on the record-breaking extension:

Watch: Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder with outstanding trick shot for ALS Research

Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder connected with a baseball while wakeboarding in a Boston Red Sox helmet for ALS Research.

Pearl Jam lead singer Eddie Vedder stepped up to the plate — sort of — in a Boston Red Sox helmet no less as part of the #TrickShot4Snowy challenge in the fight against ALS.

Vedder was challenged by his friend, current Cubs, and former Red Sox boss Theo Epstein. The #TrickShot4Snowy challenge was started to help out Calgary Flames Assistant GM Chris Snow who is battling ALS.

As part of the challenge, people are asked to complete a trick shot of some athleticism and post it with the #TrickShot4Snowy hashtag, helping to bring attention to ALS, then make a donation to directly fund ALS Research.

For his trick shot,  Vedder was wakeboarding — towed behind a boat on a surfboard — with a bat in hands and delivered a sweet swing and connection..You can watch his trick shot below.

Vedder then challenged his Pearl Jam bandmate Jeff Ament, and retired NHL superstar Chris Chelios.

2020 MLB Futures Odds: How many games will the Boston Red Sox win?

Looking at 2020 MLB futures odds for how many games the Boston Red Sox will win in the 60-game MLB season.

How many games will the Boston Red Sox win in the 60-game 2020 MLB season? We look at the Red Sox’s MLB futures odds, including their projected 2020 win total and Over/Under odds at BetMGM, and make our best bet.

Boston Red Sox’s 2019 recap

The Red Sox endured a rocky 2019 season, finishing 84-78 in Alex Cora’s last season as manager. The bats were alive, but the pitching staff failed to come close to expectations, including Chris Sale, who finished 6-11.

Boston was the second-worst MLB team vs. the run line last season, going 69-93 – only ahead of the Detroit Tigers (66-95). The Red Sox were profitable to OVER betters, however, going a 90-67-5 Over/Under record.

Against the AL East, the Red Sox finished below .500 at 35-41.

Boston Red Sox’s offseason

The Red Sox’s biggest departure of the offseason was undoubtedly Mookie Betts, who they traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers in a package with SP David Price. SP Rick Porcello, IF/OF Brock Holt and IF Eduardo Nuñez also left by way of free agency.

As for additions, there weren’t many notable ones made by the Red Sox. SP Martin Perez was their most expensive ($6 million one-year deal with a $6.25 million club option for 2021), while CF Kevin Pillar was also brought in to help the outfield.

Also see:

Boston Red Sox’s 2020 schedule

The schedule will be limited to 60 games: 40 against the AL East and 20 against the NL East. Tough matchups with the New York Yankees, Tampa Bay Rays, Philadelphia Phillies, New York Mets and Washington Nationals will make this a road to face.

Travel won’t be a concern with most of the teams in the same relative area, which was the goal for MLB with this modified schedule.

How many games will the Red Sox win in 2020?

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated Thursday, July 2 at 4:45 p.m. ET.

The win total projection for Boston is 31.5 games – third in the AL East – with both the Over and Under carrying -110 odds. The Red Sox have finished above .500 each of the last four years, winning the division three consecutive seasons from 2016-18 … but these aren’t those same Red Sox.

With how much the front office stripped the roster and ace Sale out for the year (Tommy John surgery), it’s hard to see the Red Sox competing for the AL East title unless they get a miraculous effort from the other starters.

I’d take the UNDER 31.5 (-110) on this bet, though it’ll be close because I expect Boston to be right around .500.

Boston Red Sox’s World Series odds

Boston is +3500 to win the World Series, behind 15 other teams. The AL is loaded with championship-caliber clubs, particularly in Boston’s own division.

Thus, the Red Sox are NOT WORTH A BET, even with the big-reward potential of a 35-to-1 payoff. There’s just too much uncertainty.

Boston Red Sox’s playoff odds

Their odds to win the AL pennant is 18-to-1 (+1800), while an AL East crown is 10-to-1 (+1000). I just don’t see it. AVOID.

Red Sox condemn racist fans at Fenway: ‘Torii Hunter’s experience is real’

“True change starts from within.”

Last week, former MLB outfielder Torii Hunter detailed the racial abuse he experienced as a visiting player in Boston during his playing career.

He told Golic & Wingo in a radio appearance that the experience at Fenway Park was so bad that he made a point to include a non-trade clause to the Red Sox in all of his contracts. And Hunter wasn’t alone. Black players have long faced racial abuse during visits to Fenway Park. Adam Jones spoke out about his experience in 2017.

And despite those numerous allegations of racism from Boston fans, there were Red Sox fans who dismissed the notion that Fenway could have a racism problem.

On Wednesday, the Red Sox organization made a surprising public acknowledgment of Fenway’s racist incidents, condemning those racist fans in a statement while offering support for Hunter.

In the statement, the Red Sox said that “Torii Hunter’s experience is real.” The team also disclosed that the organization handled seven reported incidents of racism last season and expected more went unreported.

The team also vowed to do a better job, saying, “True change starts from within.”

Let’s hope the Red Sox follow through on those remarks.
