Right on brand! Texas A&M outfielder Braden Montgomery was taken 12th by the Boston Red Sox in the 2024 MLB Draft. This selection is the highest-selected Aggie position player in team history.

The former Stanford transfer came to Aggieland for the 2024 Aggie team and had an instant impact. As an elite hitter and great defender, Montgomery can make a similar impact in Boston. Montgomery showed throughout the season that he has big-league power, hitting 27 home runs on a shortened season due to injury.

If it wasn’t for a season-ending injury that took him out of the College World Series, he might have been a top 5 pick this season. However, to still be a day one top 15 pick is a testament to how great of a pro prospect Montgomery has become.

Former UNC baseball ace earns Minor League Player of the Week honor

It might be time for the Boston Red Sox to call this former Diamond Heel back up from the Minor Leagues.

Even though the 2018 season was his lone as a North Carolina Tar Heels baseball player, Cooper Criswell quickly became one of the top pitchers in recent memory.

Criswell was an integral part of the UNC squad which made a run to the 2018 College World Series. That North Carolina team beat Oregon State in its CWS opener, with Criswell notching the save, then lost two consecutive games to Mississippi State and the Beavers.

In the regular season, Criswell pitched to a a 6-2 win-loss record and an impressive 2.99 earned run average. He struck out 86 batters, too, climbing up the MLB Draft boards of many scouts.

Criswell’s college performance earned him a selection in the 2018 MLB Draft, with the Los Angeles Angels selecting him in the 13th round. Criswell has since bounced around, going to the Tampa Bay Ray and – now – the Boston Red Sox.

Criswell spent time in Boston, but is now playing in Triple-A Worcester, a move that may have paid off for his career development.

For the week of July 1-7, Criswell was named the International League Pitcher of the Week.

Criswell earned the win in Worcester’s 4-0 victory over the Syracuse Mets on Saturday, July 6, pitching six innings of 1-hit baseball while striking out eight batters. This was Criswell’s longest outing of the year, with his eight punch outs one short of a season-high nine in Boston.

With struggles in the back end of the Red Sox’s pitching staff, performances like Saturday’s could earn Criswell another call-up.

A Yankees fan absolutely lasered a Rafael Devers home run ball back to the mound

    What a throw!

Remember in Rookie of the Year when Henry Rowengartner throws a ball back and everyone’s wowed by how amazing the toss was?

Well, here it is in real life. As Boston Red Sox third baseman Rafael Devers was busy single-handedly owning the New York Yankees on Sunday night, one of his home run balls made into the hands of a fan. He walked over to the wall and gave it a toss.

That ball proceeded to make its way BACK to the mound. WOW! The fan appears to be a guy named Lou Valentino, who said he hasn’t played baseball in nearly 10 years. You wouldn’t know it from this throw!

The Yankees celebrate George Costanza Night by spectacularly blowing a sure thing

Who could’ve possibly seen this coming except for everyone who watched Seinfeld?

Maybe instead of hosting a George Costanza bobblehead night next year the New York Yankees should do the opposite.

That would probably help them avoid another embarrassing meltdown in the ninth inning like Friday night, when the Yankees saw a 3-1 lead with two outs become a 5-3 extra innings victory for the Boston Red Sox instead.

It happened exactly how you’d imagine. Clay Holmes came on in the ninth to close out the win and promptly sat down Rafael Devers and Connor Wong when Dom Smith was called upon to pinch hit. A single brought up Masataka Yoshida, who saw seven pitches before launching a sinker 405 feet to right field to tie the game.

Ceddanne Rafaela opened the top of the 10th inning with a two-run homer and the Yankees were left wondering how it all went so wrong as Kenley Jansen closed out the frame for Boston.

You could applaud the commitment to Costanza bit of ruining a sure thing, but the vibes in New York clubhouse beg to differ now that the Yankees are 5-15 in their last 20 games with four straight losses.

“It’s a difficult time and we’ve got to dig down and quick turnaround tomorrow, get ready to play and find out what we’re made of a little bit,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone told reporters. “You’re going to be tested all the time with tough spots in the season. which clearly we are right now.”

It might be time to dig out those cotton uniforms in The Bronx to see if they can’t turn this slump around.

The Boston Celtics are for sale; could Red Sox’ John Henry be interested?

If you are a little baffled by this sudden curveball pretty much no one but our April Fools’ Day joke saw coming, you are far from alone.

The Boston Celtics finally won Banner 18 after defeating the Dallas Mavericks in five games in the 2024 NBA Finals. They followed that up by locking up all of their core players with new deals or contract extensions, save for backup forward Sam Hauser. And then they decided to sell the team?

You read that right, and if you are a little baffled by this sudden curveball pretty much no one but our April Fools’ Day joke saw coming, you are far from alone. Boston Celtics said in a statement that the owners will sell a “majority interest” in 2024 and 2025, finalizing the sale in 2028. Wyc Grousbeck is expected to remain Governor until 2028.

Could John Henry, the owner of the Red Sox, be an option to purchase the reigning NBA champions? On the latest episode of the “Garden Report” podcast, CLNS Media’s John Zannis and Bobby Manning discussed the recent news. Check it out below!

The party continues for the Boston Celtics a week removed from winning the 2024 NBA Finals. The champions headed to Fenway Park to celebrate with the Boston Red Sox and their fans Monday night. The Celtics were announced just ahead of the game to massive applause, and the starters threw out the ceremonial first pitch, too. They also made sure to bring along the Larry O’Brien trophy, a symbol of their hard work and success. After the festivities, the team stuck around to watch the game itself, a tightly contested affair between the Red Sox and the visiting Toronto Blue Jays. To cap off the night, Boston won thanks to a walk-off single from Jaren Durren in the bottom of the ninth inning, rounding out a special evening for the fans in attendance. Triston Casas tells the wildest Father’s Day story on air about his dad getting arrested

One of the wilder stories to tell on Father’s Day on ESPN.

Ah, Father’s Day. A time to share wonderful stories about your dad.

Boston Red Sox first baseman Tristan Casas did just that, but this one … has quite the twist. While doing an interview with ESPN’s Sunday Night Baseball, Casas remembered being a kid playing baseball and crying on the bench while his team was out in the field.

Casas’s dad came into the dugout and, per the player, “grabbed me by my shirt, dragged me to the line and Loony Tunes-style kicked me out on to the field.”

Then? His friend’s mom called Child Services and Casas’s dad was arrested and spent the night in jail. And the first baseman talked about the lesson he learned from all of that.

    Like we said, wild.

Former Notre Dame Baseball Star Ripping Up AAA for Red Sox

    On fire!

Former Notre Dame baseball standout [autotag]Niko Kavadas[/autotag] had quite the career for the Fighting Irish and now he’s trying to kick down the door to earn a spot in the majors.

Kavadas was drafted in the 11th round of the 2021 MLB draft by the Boston Red Sox and if April of 2024 is any indication, it won’t be long until he’s getting at-bats at Fenway Park for the big club.

Kavadas hit the cover off the ball in April, batting .290, cranking five home runs, and producing a 1.104 OPS for the Worcester Red Sox, the Triple-A affiliate of Boston.  For comparison, Kavadas had a 1.200 OPS for Notre Dame in 2021 when he earned All-American honors.

Here’s to hoping Kavadas continues his tear and finds himself in Boston before long.

Former Vol Trey Lipscomb by the numbers against the Red Sox at Fenway Park.

Boston (21-19) completed a series win against Washington (19-20) on Sunday at Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts. The Red Sox won, 3-2, in the series finale.

Former Vol Trey Lipscomb appeared in all three contests for the Nationals. He went 1-for-7, totaling two RBIs, two walks and one stolen base.

Washington won the series opener on Friday, 5-1, while losing Saturday’s game No. 2, 4-2.

Lipscomb was selected by Washington in the third-round of the 2022 Major League Baseball draft (No. 84 overall).

He played at Tennessee from 2019-22 and appeared in 103 games, including 78 starts. Tennessee won the Southeastern Conference East division, the league regular-season and tournament championships in 2022.

Rob Gronkowski spiked his first pitch for the Red Sox and, honestly, what did we expect?

What better way to honor Patriots Day than with a Patriot legend doing the thing that helped make him legendary?

Rob Gronkowski found a way to make one of the NFL’s oldest and simplest touchdown celebrations — the spike — and make it his own. He did this not through a clever twist or innovative move, but because he’s big as hell and found the end zone a lot. 107 times in nine seasons as a pro, in fact.

While the final two years of that career came as a Tampa Bay Buccaneer, he’s best remembered for the seven he spent in New England. Gronkowski won three Super Bowl rings alongside Tom Brady in the Patriots’ second dynasty era. Thus, it made sense for him to be invited to Fenway Park to toss out the ceremonial first pick of the Boston Red Sox’ annual Patriots Day game.

And Gronk made sure to remind everyone what holiday it was once he took the mound.

Rather than risk the humiliation of a horrible first pitch — known these days as a 50 Cent but previously a dishonor claimed by Baba Booey and Michael Jordan — Gronkowski leaned in and smashed the ball into the mound. Though it didn’t have the resilient, unpredictable bounce of a football, the point was made. Gronk remains Gronk, whether he’s at Gillette Stadium or Fenway Park.
