All Kier Meredith wanted out of an MLB team after he decided to wrap up his time at Clemson was a shot to showcase his skillset.

On Thursday his dream of pursuing a career in baseball became a reality when Meredith signed a free agent contract with the Boston Red Sox.

The Clemson graduate spent the second half of the 2021 MLB Draft anxiously waiting to hear his name called. But ultimately Meredith was relieved to get the call for the Red Sox after the draft and get an idea of what his future would hold.

“The last five days have been super stressful not having an idea what was going on and just sitting around,” Meredith said. “But I’m just super happy to know where I am heading next.”

The left fielder and Clemson graduate battled back from injuries in his first two seasons to finish the 2021 season with a .283 batting average this season in 47 starts. He was drafted in high school by the Cubs in the 29th round of the 2017 draft but chose to go to college and get his degree.

Meredith showed his ability to get on base with a .383 on base percentage as he drew 12 walks and led the Tigers in hit by pitches with 19. He hopes to utilize his speed more at the next level as he continues to develop.

“First of all speed has always been my best tool so in order for me to have success at the next level I need to utilize that as much as I can,” Meredith said. “I need to continue to develop as a better defender and continue to develop as a better hitter. If I do those three things it will help me have as much success as I’m going to have.”

Meredith credited all of his coaches by name from his time at Clemson for his progression as a player on the field and a man off of it. He especially thanked head coach Monte Lee, assistant coaches Andrew See, Bradley Lecroy, Jared Broughton and Thomas Brittle as well as former Tigers’ hitting coach Greg Starbuck.

“They taught me how to deal with adversity and they taught me how to move on by grinding, pushing and moving forward,” Meredith said. “That’s the biggest thing I learned at Clemson and will help me be more successful than any of the tangible skills they could have taught me.”

Meredith reports to the Fort Meyers training facility next week.

Red Sox select Notre Dame slugger Kavados

It took longer than expected but it was still quite the landing spot for this Irish star

It took longer than most had thought but Notre Dame All-American first baseman Niko Kavadas finally heard his name called Tuesday, in the 11th round of the 2021 MLB draft.

The Boston Red Sox selected Kavadas with the 316th overall pick.  If Kavadas isn’t pleased with where he was drafted he does have one more year of eligibility to return to Notre Dame.

Kavadas set a Notre Dame single season record with 22 home runs in 2021 and was a big reason why the Irish came within one win of reaching the College World Series.

Boston Red Sox select Jud Fabian in 2nd round of 2021 MLB draft

Fabian will likely ask for more than his slotted amount, and that negotiation process could determine whether he returns to Florida.

Florida center fielder Jud Fabian‘s wait finally came to an end, as he was selected by the Boston Red Sox with the 40th overall pick in the second round of the 2021 MLB draft on Monday. Many projected Fabian to be a first-round pick, but he went unselected in the first 36 picks on Sunday night.

The No. 13 high school recruit in the nation back in 2019, according to Perfect Game, Fabian entered his “COVID” sophomore season in 2021 as a potential No. 1 overall pick.

He was productive in his 59 starts, leading the team in home runs with 20. That mark was tied for second-best in the SEC and ninth-best nationally. He also notched 10 doubles and 46 RBI.

But Fabian was inconsistent at the plate. He only managed a .249 average, and he struck out 79 times, 25 more than anyone else on the entire team. Still, Fabian is an elite defensive player, finishing with a .971 fielding percentage in 2021.

His slide past the first round could have something to do with a report from D1Baseball’s Kendall Rogers, which indicated that Fabian was looking for a hefty signing bonus and would be content with returning to Florida if he doesn’t get what he’s looking for.

With his selection at No. 40, Fabian is slotted to make $1.86 million at signing. But given the fact that he was projected to be selected higher and could leverage a potential return to Florida, he will likely ask for more than the slotted amount.

How that negotiation process progresses with the Red Sox will likely determine whether Fabian will sign or return to school in 2022, but with his early-round selection, it’s very possible his time in the Orange and Blue has come to an end.

Red Sox pitcher Adam Ottavino had fiery trash talk for Shohei Ohtani after recording final out

That was rude.

For the past few weeks, it had seriously felt like Angels star Shohei Ohtani was hitting home runs on a daily basis. The pitching and hitting phenom leads the league with 31 homers, but Monday’s matchup with the Red Sox did not include a Ohtani dinger, sadly.

It did, however, have its share of trash talk from Red Sox reliever Adam Ottavino.

As the Angels rallied from four runs down against Boston to cut the deficit to a run, Ohtani was at the plate with two outs and runners on second and third in the ninth. Ohtani would end up smoking a line drive right into the shift in shallow right field to end the game.

But keep an eye on Ottavino after he got Ohtani to hit into the final out. It sure looked like he had some choice words for the Angels star.

Some lip-reading guesses had Ottavino referencing Ohtani’s birthday, which was Monday, in a NSFW manner.

But still, that was a pretty odd reaction from Ottavino. He has every right to be pumped about recording the save against one of the game’s most dangerous hitters. But there’s a difference between celebrating and blatantly taunting an opponent for no reason.

Ottavino crossed that line.

A Yankees fan was really happy to catch a Red Sox home run and MLB fans couldn’t stop laughing

This guy was so happy to catch a home run hit by the Red Sox.

The New York Yankees went to Fenway Park over the weekend and got swept yet again by the Red Sox.

It was a brutal weekend for a Yankees team that has struggled a bunch this season and is currently in third in the AL East.

On Sunday they saw their ace, Gerrit Cole, get shelled in Sunday’s 9-2 loss. Things got away from Cole from the very his first pitch of the game, which Enrique Hernandez hit into the Monster Seats in left field for a solo home run.

One Yankees fan didn’t seem to mind that home run, though. I’m talking about this guy in the video below who caught the ball while wearing a bunch of Yankees gear. Sitting in those seats has to be an awesome experience and catching a home run has to be incredible, too. It’s just a tough look when it’s one that’s hit by your rival on the very first pitch of the game:

Again, sweet catch by that guy and it looks like he was there with his son, which is something they will never forget. That’s great. Making memories at the ballpark is one of the greatest things in life. I’m happy for the guy.

But Twitter did rightfully find it funny that the Yankees fan was so happy:

A Red Sox fan caught a bat like it was nothing and didn’t get off the phone while doing it

This guy was all business while on the phone.

When you go to a Major League Baseball game there’s usually a small part of you that wonders if that will be the day that you finally get a foul ball.

One fan at the Angels-Red Sox game on Sunday didn’t get a foul ball. Instead, he got something better as he made a nice play on a foul bat that went flying into the stands on a swing and a miss from Jose Rojas.

The fan was able to grab the bat, which he quickly handed off to someone in his group, while staying on a phone call. I don’t know who even makes phone calls these days, let alone one at a ballgame, but this fella did just that while making a play on the bat.

Check this out:

How casual.

Seriously, who makes a phone call at a baseball game?! Nice job though, dude.
