Boston Red Sox at Baltimore Orioles odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Tuesday’s Boston Red Sox at Baltimore Orioles odds and lines, with MLB picks and predictions.

Needing a strong finish to the season in order to make the playoffs, the Boston Red Sox (88-68) will open a three-game series on the road against the Baltimore Orioles (50-106) Tuesday. First pitch from Camden Yards will be at 7:05 p.m. ET. Let’s analyze the lines around the Red Sox vs. Orioles odds with MLB picks and predictions.

Red Sox LHP Chris Sale (5-0, 2.57 ERA) makes his eighth start. He has a 1.29 WHIP, 2.1 BB/9 and 10.0 K/9 through 35 IP.

  • Sale’s longest outing of the season so far is 6 innings as the Red Sox limit his workload in his return from Tommy John surgery. He hasn’t allowed more than two runs in a single start.
  • In two starts against the Orioles, Sale has pitched 10 innings and allowed three earned runs, all solo home runs. He is 2-0 against Baltimore this season.

Orioles LHP Bruce Zimmerman (4-4, 5.13 ERA) makes his 12th start. He has a 1.48 WHIP, 3.0 BB/9 and 8.0 K/9 through 59 2/3 IP.

  • Zimmerman has allowed three or fewer runs and pitched at least 5 innings in each of his last four starts, going 2-1 in that span.
  • In two appearances against the Red Sox this season, Zimmerman allowed six runs in 12 innings and struck out nine, going 1-0.

Prediction

Red Sox 6, Orioles 2

Money line (ML)

Boston is in desperate need of a win, sitting one game ahead of the Toronto Blue Jays for the second AL Wild Card spot. The Red Sox have a favorable matchup with the Orioles this week, and I fully expect them to come out strong in Game 1 with Sale on the bump.

Bet the RED SOX (-270) to win outright, having won six of Sale’s seven starts.

Run line/Against the spread (ATS)

Despite getting swept by the New York Yankees at Fenway Park, the Red Sox are still 7-3 ATS in their last 10 games. Baltimore is only 4-6 ATS and has won only three of its last 10 games overall.

The Red Sox should be able to put runs across against the lefty Zimmerman, bouncing back from an underwhelming series against New York where they scored just three runs in each game.

Take the RED SOX -2.5 (-110) to cover.

Over/Under (O/U)

The total has gone Under in five of the Orioles’ last seven games as Baltimore’s offense continues to struggle. The Red Sox have scored the fourth-most runs this season, pushing the total Over in four of their last five road games.

With Sale on the mound, I’m taking the UNDER 9.5 (-125) tonight.
