Washington Capitals at Boston Bruins odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Wednesday’s Washington Capitals at Boston Bruins NHL odds and lines, with hockey picks, tips and predictions.

The Washington Capitals (12-5-4) visit the Boston Bruins (12-5-2) Wednesday for a 7 p.m. ET puck drop at TD Garden. Below, we analyze the Capitals-Bruins odds and lines, with NHL picks and predictions.

Capitals at Bruins: Odds, spread and lines

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated Tuesday at 4:17 a.m. ET.

  • Money line: Capitals +125 (bet $100 to win $125) | Bruins -150 (bet $150 to win $100)
  • Against the spread/ATS: Capitals +1.5 (-225) | Bruins -1.5 (+180)
  • Over/Under: 6 (O: -120 | U: +100)

Capitals at Bruins: Projected starting goalies

Ilya Samsonov (2-0-1, 2.92 GAA, .878 SV%) vs. Tuukka Rask (8-3-1, 2.71 GAA, .896 SV%)

Samsonov will make his fourth start of the season, and each assignment has been on the road. His lone setback was a 4-3 shootout loss at the Pittsburgh Penguins Jan. 17. His most recent outing was his best showing, turning aside 19 of 21 shots in a 3-2 win at the New Jersey Devils.

Rask is projected as the Bruins’ starter. He will look to tap into whatever he did last time out at Madison Square Garden against the New York Rangers Sunday when he allowed just one goal on 21 shots, tying a season best for goals allowed (three times). He will face the Capitals for the first time since Jan. 30 when he lost 4-3 in overtime at Capital One Arena. Rask allowed four goals on 23 shots in that one.

Capitals at Bruins: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Bruins 4, Capitals 2

Money line (ML)

The BRUINS (-150) are moderate favorites on their home ice. While Washington has been hot, winning four of the past five games overall, it has dropped four of the past five as a road underdog. Boston is also 5-1 in the previous six at home, and 4-0 in its past four against teams with a winning record.

This goes against the series trends, however, as Washington has won 36 of the past 51 vs. Boston, including eight wins in the past nine trips to Beantown.

Play our new free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now!

Against the spread (ATS)

The BRUINS -1.5 (+180) are a tempting play as you can nearly double up if they can cover the puck line. This also goes against the trends in this series. It might take an empty-net goal late, but this is certainly worth a small-unit play.

Over/Under (O/U)

The O/U line is 6, and I am projecting a push in this particular matchup. If I had a lean, it would be to the Under, which is 19-6-1 in the previous 26 meetings in Massachusetts.

The alternate line of UNDER 6.5 (-125) is not a bad price.

Boston Bruins at New York Rangers odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Sunday’s Boston Bruins and New York Rangers NHL odds and lines, with hockey picks, tips and predictions.

The Boston Bruins (11-5-2) play the second game of a two-game set against the New York Rangers (7-8-3) Sunday with a noon ET puck drop at Madison Square Garden. Below, we analyze the Bruins-Rangers odds and lines, with NHL picks and predictions.

Bruins at Rangers: Odds, spread and lines

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated Saturday at 10:09 p.m. ET.

  • Money line: Bruins -165 (bet $165 to win $100) | Rangers +140 (bet $100 to win $140)
  • Against the spread/ATS: Bruins -1.5 (+155) | Rangers +1.5 (-190)
  • Over/Under: 5.5 (O: -120 | U: +100)

Bruins at Rangers: Projected starting goalies

Tuukka Rask (7-3-1, 2.86 GAA, .892 SV%) vs. Alexandar Georgiev (3-2-2, 2.81 GAA, .901 SV%, 1 SO)

Boston’s Rask and G Jaroslav Halak both were roughed up in their most recent starts. Rask is projected to go here, looking to redeem himself after letting in six goals on 34 shots in Friday’s 6-2 to the Rangers. Halak allowed seven goals on 37 shots in a 7-2 setback at the New York Islanders Thursday. So, neither is in very good form right now.

Georgiev, who is confirmed to start for the Rangers, is looking to build on his Friday victory. He allowed just two Boston goals on 33 shots in the 6-2 win, and that came on the heels of a 3-2 shootout victory at the Philadelphia Flyers Feb. 18 in his previous start. His confidence is building by the day.

Special NHL Betting Promotion! Bet $1 on either team’s money line, WIN $100 (in free bets) if either team scores a goal in the game. Betting offer available in CO, IA, IN, MI, NJ, PA, TN, VA and WV. Place your legal, online bets at BetMGM. New customer offer, terms and conditions apply. Bet now!

Bruins at Rangers: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Bruins 3, Rangers 2

Money line (ML)

The BRUINS (-165) are moderate favorites against a Rangers team which destroyed them in the front end of this double dip. It’s hard to see the Blueshirts beating the Bruins in two straight, especially since the B’s are 9-4 in the past 13 against teams with a losing record.

Play our new free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now!

Against the spread (ATS)

The RANGERS +1.5 (-190) are a little expensive on their home ice, but they’re a good play with the goaltenders of the Bruins an absolute disaster in the past week. Georgiev is playing with a lot of confidence at the other end of the ice. When Boston wins, it will likely require overtime or a shootout.

Over/Under (O/U)

The UNDER 5.5 (+100) is risky business given the fact the B’s have allowed 13 total goals in the past two games, but Boston should be able to pull it together defensively. Boston is still No. 3 in shots against, and No. 3 on the penalty kill, and it is 12th in goals against at 2.7.

Boston Bruins at New York Rangers odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Friday’s Boston Bruins at New York Rangers NHL odds and lines, with hockey picks, tips and predictions.

The Boston Bruins (11-4-2) and New York Rangers (6-8-3) begin a two-game set at Madison Square Garden with a 7 p.m. ET puck drop Friday. The second game will be played Sunday afternoon. Below, we analyze the Bruins-Rangers odds and lines, with NHL picks and predictions.

The Bruins will try to quickly move on from a 7-2 shellacking they were handed by the New York Islanders Thursday. The 5-goal margin was by far Boston’s worst loss of the season but was also their third loss in four games.

The Rangers took a 4-3 loss against the Philadelphia Flyers Wednesday and return home from a three-game road trip. They remain without LW Artemi Panarin (personal), D Jacob Trouba (thumb), and likely D K’Andre Miller and RW Kaapo Kakko due to COVID-19 protocols.

Bruins at Rangers: Odds, spread and lines

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated at 10:57 a.m. ET.

  • Money line: Bruins -185 (bet $185 to win $100) | Rangers +155 (bet $100 to win $155)
  • Against the spread/ATS: Bruins -1.5 (+150) | Rangers +1.5 (-185)
  • Over/Under: 5.5 (O: -105 | U: -115)

Bruins at Rangers: Projected starting goalies

Tuukka Rask (7-2-1, .901 SV%, 2.56 GAA) at Alexandar Georgiev (2-2-2, .893 SV%, 2.95 GAA)

Rask was off Thursday night as backup Jaroslav Halak was left in for all 7 goals against the Isles. Rask last played Sunday and allowed 3 goals on 19 shots but got the win over the Flyers. He faced the Rangers two weeks ago and stopped 33 of 35 shots in a win.

Georgiev is coming off a win over the Flyers exactly one week ago. He faced the Bruins Feb. 10 and allowed 3 goals on 32 shots in an overtime loss. He has a better save percentage at home than on the road but his goals against average on home ice is 3.23.

The BRUINS (-185) are heavy road favorites and while the price may seem a little scary for a team coming off a 7-2 loss, the veteran B’s will bounce back. The rested Rask has the edge in the goaltending battle and the Rangers are likely to still be without too much firepower to give him a real test.

Despite Thursday’s disaster, the Bruins are fourth in the NHL with a 5-on-5 Corsi For percentage of 54.25. The Rangers are 24th at a rate of just 48.43%.

The Bruins are 0-4 straight up in their last four games on no rest, but the pivot back to Rask and the depleted Rangers roster will buck that trend.

Play our new free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now!

Against the spread (ATS)

Grab the BRUINS -1.5 (+150) as the better value play. They’ve won six straight against their Original Six rivals and three of those were by multi-goal margins.

The shorthanded Rangers faced two multi-goal deficits against the Flyers Wednesday before narrowing the gap early in the third period.

Over/Under (O/U)

Take the UNDER 5.5 (-115) as the strongest play on this game. The Under is 5-1 in the Rangers’ last six home games, 10-1 in their last 11 games when playing on one day of rest and 4-0 in their last four games against teams with a winning percentage over .600.

The Under is also 6-2 in the Bruins’ last eight games after allowing 5 or more goals.

Philadelphia Flyers vs. Boston Bruins odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Sunday’s Philadelphia Flyers vs. Boston Bruins NHL odds and lines, with hockey picks, tips and predictions.

The Philadelphia Flyers (8-3-3) and the Boston Bruins (10-3-2) meet Sunday for a 7:30 p.m. ET puck drop in an outdoor game near Lake Tahoe in Stateline, Nev. Below we analyze the Flyers-Bruins NHL odds and lines, with picks and predictions.

Flyers vs. Bruins: Odds, spread and lines

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated at 4:47 a.m. ET.

  • Money line: Flyers +165 (bet $100 to win $165) | Bruins -200 (bet $200 to win $100)
  • Against the spread/ATS: Flyers +1.5 (-165) | Bruins -1.5 (+140)
  • Over/Under: 5.5 (O: -110 | U: -110)

Flyers vs. Bruins: Projected starting goalies

Carter Hart (5-2-3, 3.31 GAA, .902 SV%) at Tuukka Rask (6-2-1, 2.51 GAA, .906 SV%)

Hart hasn’t been able to beat the Bruins in Boston or Philadelphia. Now he’ll hope to get it done in the high country near Lake Tahoe. In three starts against the B’s, Hart has posted a 0-1-2 record, 4.53 GAA and .865 SV%. That’s the bad news. The good news is that Hart hasn’t lost in regulation in his past five starts since Jan. 23 in Boston.

Rask in confirmed to be in the crease for the Bruins. He has had a flare for the dramatic this season as six of his nine starts have been decided in either overtime or a shootout. He is 3-1 in overtime and 2-0 in shootouts. He is a perfect 3-0-0 with a 2.60 GAA and .893 SV% in three starts against Philly.

Flyers vs. Bruins: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Bruins 4, Flyers 1

Money line (ML)

The Bruins (-200) will cost you two times your potential return, and that’s risky business given the neutral site and potential difficult ice conditions. The game was moved from 3 p.m. ET to 7:30 p.m. ET after Saturday’s Vegas Golden Knights-Colorado Avalanche showdown in Stateline was delayed and finished in the evening as they played just one period in the midday sun. AVOID.

Play our new free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now!

Against the spread (ATS)

The BRUINS -1.5 (+140) are a better play on the puck line than the money line, especially since Hart has struggled so much against the B’s this season. Again, the ice conditions and neutral site are concerning, but given Boston’s dominance against Philly in every other venue, why should Tahoe be any different?

Over/Under (O/U)

The lean is to the UNDER 5.5 (-110). The Under cashed in Saturday’s 11-hour odyssey between the Avs and Golden Knights. The Under also cashed in last season’s game at the Air Force Academy between Colorado and the Los Angeles Kings. The Under is actually 3-1 in the past four NHL games played outside.

Of course, the last time Philly played on home ice in the Stadium Series outdoors, it hit the Over in a 4-3 overtime win over the Pittsburgh Penguins Feb. 23, 2019. The last time the B’s were outside, they topped the Chicago Blackhawks 4-2 at Notre Dame Stadium Jan. 1, 2019.

New Jersey Devils at Boston Bruins odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Thursday’s New Jersey Devils at Boston Bruins NHL odds and lines, with hockey picks, tips and predictions.

The New Jersey Devils (5-3-2) visit the Boston Bruins (10-2-2) Thursday for a 7 p.m. ET puck drop. Below we analyze the Devils-Bruins NHL odds and lines, with picks and predictions.

Devils at Bruins: Odds, spread and lines

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated at 7:30 a.m. ET.

  • Money line: Devils +190 (bet $100 to win $190) | Bruins -225 (bet $225 to win $100)
  • Against the spread/ATS: Devils +1.5 (-150) | Bruins -1.5 (+125)
  • Over/Under: 5.5 (O: -110 | U: -110)

Devils at Bruins: Projected starting goalies

Mackenzie Blackwood (3-0-1, 1.92 GAA, .948 SV%) vs. Tuukka Rask (6-2-1, 2.51 GAA, .906 SV%)

Blackwood returned to the crease Tuesday for the first time in nearly a month due to COVID-19. He picked up right where he left off, stopping 37 of the 39 shots he faced in a 5-2 win at Madison Square Garden against the Rangers. He’ll get a much bigger test on the road against the B’s. It will be his third appearance against Boston, and he handled himself well in both previous outings. He allowed two goals on 37 shots in a 3-2 shootout loss Jan. 14, and he stopped 27 of 28 shots in a 2-1 overtime victory Jan. 16.

Rask has faced the Devils once this season, stopping 20 of 22 shots in the 3-2 shootout win opposite Blackwood Jan. 14 in Newark, N.J. Rask saw his three-game win streak snapped last time out at N.Y. Islanders, yielding four goals on 42 shots.

Devils at Bruins: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Bruins 3, Devils 2

Money line (ML)

The Bruins (-225) will cost you more than two times your potential return. While that looks like a good play on paper for the red-hot B’s, the Devils (+190) played them tough in each of the two previous outings. It’s risky business, so look to the spread instead. PASS.

Play our new free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now!

Against the spread (ATS)

The DEVILS +1.5 (-150) are actually a pretty decent play on the puck like. Rarely, if ever, do I suggest the underdog, but New Jersey has played two one-goal games against the B’s so far. And each of Boston’s past four victories have been by just one goal, so consider betting New Jersey lightly plus a goal-and-a-half.

Over/Under (O/U)

The UNDER 5.5 (-110) is the way to be in this outing. Both of the previous outings, with Blackwood in the crease, hit the Under. The teams combined for just eight total goals in the first two games in this series. Look for Rask and Blackwood to toss up plenty of donuts in this one, too.

Boston Bruins at New York Islanders odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Saturday’s Boston Bruins at New York Islanders NHL odds and lines, with hockey picks, tips and predictions.

The Boston Bruins (10-1-2) come off a two-game sweep of the New York Rangers and relocate to Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum Saturday to play the New York Islanders (5-4-3). Puck drop will be at 7 p.m. ET. Below, we analyze the Bruins-Islanders NHL odds and lines, with picks and predictions.

The Bruins dropped the Rangers 3-2 in overtime Wednesday and then by a 1-0 score Friday in the first half of this back-to-back. The Islanders suffered a 4-3 shootout loss against the Pittsburgh Penguins Thursday and were off Friday.

Bruins at Islanders: Odds, spread and lines

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated at 9:55 a.m. ET.

  • Money line: Bruins -130 (bet $130 to win $100) | Islanders +110 (bet $100 to win $110)
  • Against the spread/ATS: Bruins -1.5 (+220) | Islanders +1.5 (-275)
  • Over/Under: 5.5 (O: +110 | U: -135)

Bruins at Islanders: Projected starting goalies

Tuukka Rask (6-1-1, .906 SV%, 2.31 GAA) vs. Semyon Varlamov (5-2-2, .929 SV%, 1.98 GAA)

Rask is coming off his best outing of the season with 33 saves on 35 shots in Wednesday’s win over the Rangers. He has backstopped the Bruins to three straight wins and has gotten them at least one point in all but one of his eight starts.

Varlamov’s numbers through nine games are strongly buoyed by his back-to-back shutouts to open the season, but he turned in his third clean sheet Monday by stopping all 30 shots he faced from the Rangers. He blanked the Bruins earlier this season by stopping all 27 shots he faced.

Bruins at Islanders: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Islanders 2, Bruins 1

Money line (ML)

The ISLANDERS (+110) can be backed for what would be a slight upset on home ice. The Bruins are 1-4 straight up in their last five games when playing on no rest.

Boston dominated possession in its first meeting with the Islanders this season, posting a 5-on-5 Corsi For rating of 63.77% and registering 56.25% of the scoring chances at full strength. New York had more high-danger shot attempts.

The Bruins were able to rest Rask Friday by turning to backup Jaroslav Halak for Game 2 against the Rangers, but Varlamov has stymied Boston once already this season and returned to top form earlier this week before taking a 4-3 shootout loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins Thursday.

Side with the rested home time.

Play our new free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now!

Against the spread (ATS)

Stick with the upset win for the Islanders, and PASS on the expensive puck line play.

At -275 odds, a $10 bet on the Isles to lose by just a single goal would return a profit of just $3.64.

Over/Under (O/U)

Stick with the UNDER 5.5 (-135) in what’s expected to be another goalie battle.

The last seven head-to-head clashes have gone 0-6-1 against the projected total, and Boston enters Saturday on a run of three consecutive Unders.

Boston Bruins at New York Rangers odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Wednesday’s Boston Bruins at New York Rangers NHL odds and lines, with hockey picks, tips and predictions.

The Boston Bruins (8-1-2) and New York Rangers (4-5-2) begin a two-game set at Madison Square Garden with a 7 p.m. ET puck drop Wednesday. Below, we analyze the Bruins-Rangers NHL odds and lines, with picks and predictions.

The Bruins have been off since Friday after having a two-game set against the Buffalo Sabres postponed due to a COVID-19 outbreak through the Buffalo organization. Boston had previously won three in a row.

The Rangers are 2-1-0 to begin February and had a game of their own postponed Saturday due to COVID issues for the New Jersey Devils.

Bruins at Rangers: Odds, spread and lines

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated at 12:05 p.m. ET.

  • Against the spread/ATS: Bruins -1.5 (+165) | Rangers +1.5 (-200)
  • Over/Under: 5.5 (O: -115 | U: -105)

Bruins at Rangers: Projected starting goalies

Tuukka Rask (5-1-1 .898 SV%, 2.36 GAA) vs. Alexandar Georgiev (1-2-1, .886 SV%, 3.27 GAA)

Rask has won four of his last five starts; three of those victories were against the high-scoring Philadelphia Flyers. The veteran has allowed just 1 or 2 goals in four of his seven outings. Rask didn’t face the Rangers last season.

Georgiev continues to split time fairly evenly with Igor Shesterkin but the second-year Bulgarian will start on his 25th birthday. He last allowed 5 goals on 38 shots in an overtime loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins at MSG Jan. 30.

Bruins at Rangers: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Bruins 4, Rangers 2

Money line (ML)

The BRUINS (-165) are the play on the road as the much better team early this season. Boston is third in the NHL in Corsi For percentage and 11th in scoring chances for at 5-on-5; the Rangers are 18th and 19th, respectively. Boston has a sizable edge in both power-play and penalty-kill success rates.

Give the goaltending edge to Rask even though he hasn’t seen the Rangers in some time and back Boston to spoil Georgiev’s birthday in NYC.

Play our new free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now!

Against the spread (ATS)

The BRUINS -1.5 (+165) can be backed for extra profit with a win by 2 or more goals. Three of their last five victories were by multi-goal margins, and they’ve scored at least 4 goals in five of their last seven games.

The Rangers are 8-3 ATS but trust Boston’s advantage in the analytics at 5-on-5 and its special teams’ edge.

Over/Under (O/U)

Take the OVER 5.5 (-115) with the Bruins likely to continue their scoring surge since RW David Pastrnak returned to the lineup. Both teams enter well-rested and should be ready to score in this Original Six battle.

  • Over/Under: 5.5 (O: -115 | U: -105)

Bruins at Flyers: Projected starting goalies

Tuukka Rask (4-1-1, .888 SV%, 2.57 GAA) vs. Brian Elliott (3-0-0, .932 SV%, 2.22 GAA)

Rask stopped 22 of 25 shots faced in Wednesday’s win over the Flyers. It was his third victory in his last four outings with the loss coming in overtime against the Washington Capitals Saturday. He has allowed 3 or 4 goals in three of those four games.

Elliott comes in for Friday’s game after starter Carter Hart allowed 4 goals on 35 shots in the overtime loss Wednesday. Elliott hasn’t been charged with a loss yet this season, but he allowed 3 goals in each of his last two outings.

Bruins at Flyers: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Flyers 4, Bruins 3

Money line (ML)

The FLYERS (+120) are worth a shot for the upset on home ice after letting a 2-goal lead slip away Wednesday. The Bruins dominated puck possession with 53.68% of all shot attempts, including blocked and missed shots, at 5-on-5, but the Flyers had 58.33% of the even-strength scoring chances.

Boston was also opportunistic in scoring on 3 of 4 power-play opportunities. Even at a 28th-ranked 70.73% success rate, the Flyers penalty kill should be better than that.

The FLYERS +1.5 (-250) can also be backed for the insurance on the puck line with a small wager. Their last three games have gone to extra time, and they won two of those over the Islanders. The Bruins are 4-0-1 in their last five games, and three of those went to overtime.

These teams met for a two-game set in Boston Jan. 21 and 23; Boston won the first game by a 5-4 score in a shootout.

Over/Under (O/U)

All three meetings between these two teams have seen at least 7 total goals scored. Rask should get right sooner than later, but there’s little reason to hope for the correction to come in this spot against the high-scoring Flyers.

Back the OVER 5.5 (-115).

Boston Bruins at Washington Capitals odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Saturday’s Boston Bruins at Washington Capitals NHL betting odds and lines, with hockey picks, tips and predictions.

The Boston Bruins (5-1-1) are visiting the Washington Capitals (5-0-3) for a two-game set beginning Saturday with a 7 p.m. ET puck drop at Capital One Arena. Below, we analyze the Bruins-Capitals NHL odds and lines, with picks and predictions.

Bruins at Capitals: Odds, spread and lines

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated at 10:55 a.m. ET.

  • Money line: Bruins -150 (bet $150 to win $100) | Capitals +125 (bet $100 to win $125)
  • Against the spread/ATS: Bruins -1.5 (+180) | Capitals +1.5 (-225)
  • Over/Under: 5.5 (O: -120 | U: +100)

Bruins at Capitals: Projected starting goalies

Tuukka Rask (3-1-0, .905 SV%, 2.13 GAA) vs. Vitek Vanecek (4-0-2, .915 SV%, 2.75 GAA)

Rask has faced a total of just 95 shots through four starts, resulting in his strong goals against average but unimpressive save percentage. He faced a season-high 30 shots against the Pittsburgh Penguins Tuesday and made 28 stops for his second-straight win.

Vanecek remains the interim starter in Washington with Ilya Samsonov still in the league’s COVID-19 protocols. The 25-year-old rookie has faced at least 30 shots in all but one of his six starts, and he has gotten the Capitals at least a point in each one.

Bruins at Capitals: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Bruins 4, Capitals 2

Money line (ML)

The BRUINS (-150) are the play with RW David Pastrnak (hip) expected to return to the lineup; he’ll boost a Bruins offense with just 12 even-strength goals through seven games. Meanwhile, the Capitals LW Alex Ovechkin and D Dmitry Orlov will return from COVID protocols, but C Evgeny Kuznetsov and are Samsonov out. C Lars Eller (upper body) and D Justin Schultz (face) are also questionable.

The Bruins, minus Pastrnak, have been dominating puck possession with a Corsi For rating of 54.10% at 5-on-5 ranking fourth in the NHL. Boston is also recording 53.81% of scoring chances at full strength. Washington is sub-50% and in the bottom half of the league in both categories.

Finally, the veteran Rask gets the edge over Vanecek. The rookie has been impressive in helping Washington stay in the win column with Samsonov on the sidelines, but he’ll be outmatched Saturday.

Against the spread (ATS)

Take the BRUINS -1.5 (+180) for added value with a $10 bet fetching a profit of $17 if Boston wins by at least 2 goals. The Caps haven’t lost in regulation, but Pastrnak’s return adds too much firepower to a Bruins attack already doing all the right things in terms of generating pressure and controlling the pace of play.

Over/Under (O/U)

Lean to the OVER 5.5 (-120) in expectation of Pastrnak getting on the board right away and Vanecek finally showing some cracks in one of his toughest tests thus far.

Rask hasn’t been quite as sharp as usual, and he’s likely to face a higher shot count against a Capitals team with 3 or more goals in all but one game.

Pittsburgh Penguins at Boston Bruins odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Thursday’s Pittsburgh Penguins at Boston Bruins NHL odds and lines, with hockey picks, tips and predictions.

The Pittsburgh Penguins (4-2-1) travel to meet the Boston Bruins (4-1-1) at TD Garden Thursday for a 7 p.m. ET puck drop. Below, we analyze the Penguins-Bruins NHL odds and lines, with picks and predictions.

Penguins at Bruins: Odds, spread and lines

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated at 3:13 a.m. ET.

  • Money line: Penguins +110 (bet $100 to win $110) | Bruins -130 (bet $130 to win $100)
  • Against the spread/ATS: Penguins +1.5 (-250) | Bruins -1.5 (+200)
  • Over/Under: 5.5 (O: -120 | U: +100)

Penguins at Bruins: Projected starting goalies

Tristan Jarry (2-2-1, 3.91 GAA, .868 SV%) at Jaroslav Halak (1-0-1, 1.44 GAA, .938 SV%)

Jarry is projected as the starter again. He allowed three goals on 36 shots in Tuesday’s 3-2 overtime loss to Boston. G Casey DeSmith, a native of nearby New Hampshire, could be tasked with the start. DeSmith is 2-0-0 with a 2.76 GAA and .871 SV% in two starts and three appearances. Whichever goalie is in the crease, the Penguins might have to do without the services of one of their top defenders, as D Brian Dumoulin left the last game with an undisclosed injury.

Halak is confirmed to start for the B’s, as bench boss Bruce Cassidy sticks to his goaltender rotation. Halak will be looking to build upon his first win of the season as he made 16 saves in a 6-1 blowout against the Philadelphia Flyers Saturday. He has allowed just three goals on 48 shots in his two appearances.

Penguins at Bruins: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Bruins 3, Penguins 2

Money line (ML)

The BRUINS (-130) are the play as slight favorites on their home ice, as TD Garden has been a house of horrors over the years for the Penguins. The Pens are just 3-13 in their past 16 trips to Beantown, and just 8-18 across the past 26 overall against the B’s. The home side has cashed in 20 of the previous 26 head-to-head meetings with the favorite hitting in 22 of the past 29.

Against the spread (ATS)

While the Bruins -1.5 (+200) have dominated this series in recent years, a two-goal win is still a tall order. RW David Pastrnak (hip) will not play in this one, and the B’s have averaged just 2.25 goals per game in outings not against the Flyers. With Pasta sidelined, they’ll have a hard time generating offense.

Over/Under (O/U)

Back the UNDER 5.5 (+100). Halak has had it on lockdown in his two previous appearances, allowing a total of just three goals, and the Penguins matched a season-low two goals in the first end of the double dip. A total of five goals in this one is a good bet.
