Trade kickers: Players who would receive a bonus if moved this season

Here are all the NBA players who would receive a trade bonus if traded during the 2023-24 season.

There are a handful of ways NBA players can earn more money on top of their base salaries. The most common way is through incentives where players earn extra cash if they or their teams meet specific performance-based criteria.

Another type of bonus is a trade kicker, where players earn extra money if traded during the duration of their contract. They can be negotiated into a veteran contract or extension for up to 15 percent of the player’s remaining base contract. If a player has multiple years left on his contract, the trade bonus is distributed evenly to the remaining years except those with pending options.

Below is a list of every player that would have their salaries increased if traded this season. It includes what their current trade bonus is if moved before the season starts and what the prorated amount would look like if dealt at the trade at the deadline. The exact date of the deadline hasn’t been decided yet, but we’ll use February 15, 2024 as a placeholder since it is the same amount of days into the season as last season’s deadline. If a player isn’t eligible to be moved right now, his prorated amount for the day he is trade-eligible is listed.

Seahawks WR Tyler Lockett’s contract extension details revealed

The specific details of Seattle Seahawks wide receiver Tyler Lockett’s four-year, $69.2 million contract extension have been revealed.

The Seahawks signed wide receiver Tyler Lockett to a four-year, $69.2 million contract extension last week, and ESPN’s Field Yates recently revealed the details of said extension.

Lockett will carry a $9.25 million cap hit for the 2021 season, which gives the Seahawks a little more cap space to work with.

The contract extension will give Lockett incentives, notably roster bonuses down the line, and a $1.05 million escalation of his base salary if he totals 55+ receptions or 800+ receiving yards or at least eight touchdowns, per Spotrac.

The Seahawks will have one of Russell Wilson’s most reliable targets in Seattle through 2025, including what looks to be the remainder of the veteran’s prime years. Here’s hoping Wilson and Lockett will continue their strong connection in a pivotal year where it will be needed.

Broncos OL Elijah Wilkinson receives bonus worth nearly 30% of his 2019 salary

Broncos offensive lineman Elijah Wilkinson has received a performance-based bonus adding an increase of nearly 30% to his 2019 salary.

The NFL will pay out $147.952 million worth of 2019 performance-based bonuses this month. Denver Broncos offensive lineman Elijah Wilkinson is among the veteran players who received the largest bonuses.

Wilkinson, who joined the team as an undrafted free agent in 2017, played 82.19 percent of the team’s offensive snaps last season, which earned him a performance-based bonus of $192,217, the league announced Thursday.

That’s an increase of nearly 30 percent to Wilkinson’s 2019 salary ($645,000).

“The Performance-Based Pay program is a collectively bargained benefit that compensates all players, including rookies, based upon their playing time and salary levels,” according to a press release from the NFL.

Only 19 veterans received larger bonuses than Wilkinson. Chiefs cornerback Charvarius Ward earned the largest bonus in the league: $654,750.

Wilkinson is scheduled to become a restricted free agent next month and Denver is expected to place a second-round tender on him, which would give him a salary worth more than $3 million in 2020.

The bonus for Wilkinson will be paid by the league, not the Broncos.

Which Saints players can earn contract incentives against the Panthers?

New Orleans Saints players including Teddy Bridgewater and P.J. Williams can earn contract incentives by standing out against the Panthers.

The New Orleans Saints are hours away from closing out the 2019 regular season against the Carolina Panthers, but there’s more on the line for some players than others. Performance-based contract incentives are on the line, and multiple Saints could cash an extra check or two. Others have already missed out on potential cash-ins (like Demario Davis, who was undercut by a badly-designed Pro Bowl ballot from earning $500,000 by getting voted in), while some are just a big play or two away from it.

Fortunately, the Saints have a history of paying out these bonuses even if players come up a little short. Just last year, defensive end Alex Okafor missed out on a $400,000 incentive for logging four sacks (he bagged three), but the Saints cut him a check anyway. Those actions mean a lot to players, and it wouldn’t be surprising in the least if they award some bonuses again this year.

According to The Athletic’s Nick Underhill, several Saints players could trigger bonus payouts by meeting certain criteria in Week 17. Here’s who could bring in some extra money after standing out against the Panthers:

Bridgewater can earn as much as $5.25 million through contract incentives, but realistically speaking he’s only going to qualify for $500,00 of that thanks to his extended starting-time earlier this season — and only if he throws a touchdown pass against Carolina. Here’s the breakdown:

  • Earned: $250,000 for improving upon playing-time from 2018
  • Within reach: $250,000 for scoring 10 touchdowns; or $500,000 for 16 touchdowns; or $750,000 for 21 touchdowns. Currently has 9 touchdowns
  • Not likely to be earned: $250,000 per playoff appearance where Bridgewater plays 50 percent of the snaps. Unlikely, unless Drew Brees gets injured again
  • Not likely to be earned: $250,000 for 2,500 yards; or $500,000 for 2,751 yards; or $750,000 for 3,001 yards. Currently has 1,370 yards
  • Not likely to be earned: $2.5 million for playing 50% of the snaps. Currently at 39.1%, would need to start and play more than 130 snaps against the Panthers to catch up
