Tyson Fury on the mend, according to promoter Bob Arum

Promoter Bob Arum said heavyweight champ Tyson Fury seems to be regaining his health after testing positive for the coronavirus.

Bob Arum is encouraged about Tyson Fury’s health after speaking to the heavyweight titleholder.

Arum told BoxingScene.com that Fury, stricken with the coronavirus, sounded better on a phone call Monday than he did when the fighter’s co-promoter visited him Thursday in Las Vegas.

Fury’s title defense against Deontay Wilder, scheduled for July 24 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, was postponed after he tested positive for the virus. Organizers are targeting Oct. 9 at T-Mobile for the fight.

“His spirits were OK,” Arum told the outlet. “He had congestion in his chest [Thursday]. But as of [Monday] morning, he seems much better.”

Fury reportedly had received the first Moderna vaccination but not the second. Arum said he has agreed to get vaccinated before meeting Wilder for a third time.

“He’s fine with it,” Arum said. “He got vaccinated in Miami. He got the first shot. And then he said he didn’t want to get the second shot because he didn’t want to get sick [from the vaccination] so close to the fight. So he got COVID instead.”

Fury, who lives in Las Vegas, plans to return to his home country of England for a few weeks and then return to the U.S. to resume training. It’s not clear how he will be able travel with COVID-19.

Muhammad Ali’s grandson set to make pro boxing debut

Muhamma Ali’s grandson set to make pro boxing debut.

Another member of Muhammad Ali’s family is about to step through the ropes.

Nico Ali Walsh, the 20-year-old grandson of the late heavyweight icon, has signed a multi-fight contract with Top Rank and will make his pro debut in a four-round middleweight bout on Aug. 14. The fight will be televised on ESPN.

Ali Walsh is the son of Rasheda Ali Walsh, the legendary champion’s daughter, and U.S. Marine Corps Sgt. Robert Walsh.

“I’m doing what I love,” Ali Walsh said. “Signing with Top Rank is a dream come true. I’m going to have fun on Aug. 14 and the next time I fight. Top Rank will give me the name, date and location, and I’ll have a great time.

“I am honored to continue the fighting legacy that my grandfather started. It is a responsibility I don’t take lightly.”

Ali Walsh, who lives in Las Vegas, had roughly 30 amateur fights, according to Top Rank. He reportedly did the Ali Shuffle during his amateur debut as a child.

He said that some of his earliest memories in boxing were with his grandfather.

“To me, I was hanging out in the gym with my grandfather. Sometimes I have to remind myself that he’s everyone’s idol,” he said.

Ali Walsh is a student at UNLV and on track to graduate with a business degree next spring.

The Ali family has a history with Top Rank. CEO Bob Arum promoted 27 of “The Greatest’s” fights, including the “Thrilla in Manila” against Joe Frazier and the third fight with Ken Norton.

Ali Walsh’s uncle, Mike Joyce, brokered the deal with Top Rank and will serve as his manager, agent and attorney.

“Family history and legacy was a big factor in Nico signing with Top Rank,” Joyce said. “I’ve signed many fighters to Top Rank, and Bob has always treated them fairly. Nico was a little bit in awe of Bob, and it cemented his belief that he was with the right promoter. He thinks this is going to be a historic journey.”

Quipped Arum: “Nico’s grandfather was a pretty good fighter. Hopefully, Nico will emulate his success. He’s a young man of great character, which one would expect from Muhammad Ali’s grandson.”

Ali Walsh is working with trainer SugarHill Steward, the nephew of the late Emanuel Steward and the trainer of heavyweight titleholder Tyson Fury.

Laila Ali, another daughter of Muhammad Ali, also fought professionally.

Video: Shakur Stevenson “I have to live up to the hype.”

All the pressure is on Shakur Stevenson.

The 2016 Olympic silver medalist and former 126-pound titleholder is one of the hottest young fighters in the world. His opponent on Saturday is relatively obscure Jeremia Nakathila of Namibia, who is 21-1 (17 KOs) but also about a 30-1 underdog.

Stevenson (15-0, 8 KOs) is taking nothing for granted, though. He knows he has a job to do in the fight for the WBO’s “interim” 130-pound title.

“It feels good knowing that [promoter] Bob [Arum] thinks I’m the next superstar of the sport, and I have to live up to the hype,” he said at the final news conference to promote the fight on ESPN and ESPN+.

“At the end of the day, I listen [to the hype], but you can’t get too hot, You still gotta complete the task. I try to stay in between. I don’t try to listen to everything I hear and go off that.

“I try to make sure I do what I’m supposed to do. My preparation was good. My weight is good. I’m ready to fight Saturday.”

Tyson Fury, Deontay Wilder agree to terms for third fight: reports

Tyson Fury and Deontay Wilder have agreed to terms for third fight, according to reports.

Tyson Fury vs. Deontay Wilder III is all but set.

The heavyweight rivals have agreed to terms on a third fight in Las Vegas, according to multiple reports. The tentative date is July 24 but Aug. 14 reportedly also is a possibility.

The news comes only three days after an arbitrator ruled that a rematch clause in the contract for Fury-Wilder II is binding, which spoiled plans for Fury to fight fellow Briton Anthony Joshua for the undisputed championship on Aug. 14 in Saudi Arabia.

Bob Arum, Fury’s co-promoter, expects contracts to be signed in the next few days. He told ESPN that Fury, the WBC titleholder, will get the lion’s share of a 60-40 purse split.

Arum told BoxingScene.com that T-Mobile Arena, MGM Grand Garden Arena and Allegiant Stadium are all possible venues for the fight. Arum had said earlier that he reserved the stadium – home to the NFL’s Raiders – on July 24.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nWY3S2v773Y

“We’re finishing the paperwork,” Arum said Thursday, according to BoxingScene. “July 24th is the working date. Hopefully, we can get it done today. All of the terms are spelled out in that old rematch clause that we had in the original [two-fight] deal.

“There was very little work to do, almost nothing. It was a two-page document.”

Fury hasn’t said much following the arbitrator’s ruling but he did take a shot at both Wilder and Joshua Tuesday on Twitter.

“I’m smoke Wilder first then you will get yours,” he tweeted to Joshua.

Fury (30-0-1, 21 KOs) knocked out Wilder (42-1-1, 41 KOs) in seven rounds to take Wilder’s heavyweight title in February of last year, the last time either of them was in the ring. They fought to a draw in 2018.

Meanwhile, Joshua, who holds three of the four major titles, is in talks to defend them against mandatory challenger Oleksandr Usyk. Joshua has said he wants to fight this summer.

Fury and Joshua could meet late this year if they win their interim fights.

Anthony Joshua prepared to move on to Oleksandr Usyk

Promoter Eddie Hearn said Anthony Joshua is prepared to move on to Oleksandr Usyk if Tyson Fury must fight Deontay Wilder a third time.

Anthony Joshua and his team remain hopeful that he’ll fight Tyson Fury on Aug. 14 but they already are making plans to fight someone else this summer, most likely Oleksandr Usyk.

A deal was in place for Fury and Joshua to fight for the undisputed heavyweight championship on that date in Saudi Arabia. However, an arbitrator ruled on Monday that a rematch clause in the contract for Fury’s fight with Deontay Wilder last year is binding.

In the wake of that news, Bob Arum, Fury’s co-promoter, said his client will face Wilder a third time rather than pay the American to step aside so Fury-Joshua could go forward.

Fury and Joshua could then meet in December, assuming Fury beats Wilder and Joshua doesn’t lose an interim fight.

Eddie Hearn, Joshua’s promoter, held a news conference Tuesday morning in the U.K. to address the situation.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GLFIW619_Vo

“We’re here, we’re breathing,” he said. “[Joshua is] still the champion. We know what we want to do. We want to win the undisputed heavyweight championship, we want to fight Tyson Fury. But, really, if his hands are tied, we have to look elsewhere.

“I have been focusing on Plan A,” he said. “The only fight we had our mind on was Tyson Fury. I hope it will still take place on Aug. 14 but the game changed last night and we have to have a Plan B in place, and probably a Plan C as well.”

Plan B could be Usyk, the mandatory challenger to Joshua’s WBO title.

The sanctioning body had agreed to postpone enforcement of the mandatory defense so Fury-Joshua could take place but, in light of Monday’s news, a door seems to be open for Usyk to get his title shot immediately.

Hearn said he hopes Joshua can maintain his three belts so he and Joshua can still fight for all four major titles late this year if Fury ends up defending his WBC belt against Wilder in his next fight.

Arum said he has reserved Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas on July 24, the presumed target site and date for Fury-Wilder III.

“We have a couple of different options,” Hearn said. “Of course, the one that springs to mind immediately is the WBO mandatory of Oleksandr Usyk. They’ve been quiet patient and I think, really, we’re in a situation now that if Team Fury don’t’ get themselves together, don’t’ get their act together by the end of this week, we will have no option but to look for an alternative fight.

“AJ wants to fight this summer. Oleksandr Usyk is the mandatory.”

Hearn said he spoke with Usyk’s promoter Alexander Krassyuk on Tuesday morning.

“I just sort of said to him, and I was very honest, I said, ‘Look, Team Fury are trying to resolve the issue. If they don’t, there’s a very good chance we could be fighting you,” Hearn said.

Krassyuk spoke to Sky Sports on Tuesday.

“There is no other reasonable excuse for AJ now,” he told the outlet. “If he is not avoiding Usyk, it is high time to face the mandatory. Two London Olympic champions to face each other, nine years later. What a story.

“We are now in the position to make the fight happen as soon as possible.”

One problem: Where do they fight?

“We’re in a situation where we just don’t know how likely it is to get a full venue in August in the U.K.,” Hearn said. “That was one of the reasons it was ruled out for the Fury fight. We couldn’t get confirmation from Wembley [Stadium] and other venues that they would be allowed full capacity [because of COVID-19].

“But we’ll move forward we that and continue to have talks with Alex Krassyuk this week.”

Fury knocked out Wilder in seven rounds in February of last year, the British fighter’s most-recent fight. The two fought to draw in December 2018.

Joshua regained his titles – IBF, WBA and WBO – from Andy Ruiz Jr. by a wide decision in December 2019. He successfully defended them this past December against Kubrat Pulev, who was stopped in nine rounds.
