Packers WR Bo Melton becomes go-to player for Jordan Love on third down

Bo Melton’s 11 catches have produced nine first downs and a touchdown, including five conversions on third down.

Green Bay Packers wide receiver Bo Melton, who was signed to the 53-man roster after producing a career-best 105 receiving yards on Sunday night in Minneapolis, has quickly become a go-to player in big spots for Jordan Love the Packers passing game.

Consider this: Melton’s 11 catches over the last three weeks have produced nine first downs and one touchdown, including five conversions on third down.

On Sunday night against the Vikings, Melton had four different conversions on third down, including a 9-yard touchdown catch that essentially put the game away in the third quarter.

Melton has played only 94 snaps and run 52 routes in 2023, but Love and coach Matt LaFleur clearly trust him in big spots.

In Carolina, Melton converted a 3rd-and-10 with an 11-yard catch and was targeted on two other third downs.

In Minnesota, Melton converted 3rd-and-1, 3rd-and-6, 3rd-and-3 and 3rd-and-7 with catches.

Melton has also converted a 2nd-and-10 with a 14-yard catch (in Carolina) and a 2nd-and-8 with a 28-yard catch (in Minnesota).

If there’s one blemish for Melton, it came on Sunday night. The second-year receiver attempted to make a sliding catch on fourth down near the scoring area but couldn’t finish the catch. With a better throw, Melton might have scored, but he still should have made the play and the conversion. It was just another example of Love and the Packers trusting Melton in a big moment.

He might be needed in more big spots in the season finale. Jayden Reed is dealing with a chest injury and could be in danger of missing Sunday’s showdown with the Chicago Bears. If Reed can’t go, Melton will be on the field plenty in a game where the Packers can clinch a playoff spot with a win.

Packers sign WR Bo Melton to 53-man roster, place WR Samori Toure on IR

The Packers signed WR Bo Melton to the 53-man roster and placed WR Samori Toure on injured reserve.

Fresh out of practice squad elevations and one day after producing 105 receiving yards in a win over the Minnesota Vikings, receiver Bo Melton was signed by the Green Bay Packers to the team’s 53-man roster on Monday. Melton will take the roster spot of receiver Samori Toure, who was placed on injured reserve.

Melton caught six passes for a career-high 105 yards and his first NFL touchdown on Sunday night at U.S. Bank Stadium. He had catches of 28 yards and 37 yards, and his 9-yard score put the Packers up 30-3 in the third quarter.

Over the last two weeks, Melton has caught 10 passes for 149 yards and rushed one time for seven yards. Of his 11 catches this season, 10 have created first downs or touchdowns, including five conversions on third down.

Melton became the first Packers player to reach 100 receiving yards in 2023.

Melton’s signing to the active roster allows him a chance to play in the season finale against the Chicago Bears. He was previously elevated from the practice squad three times, the maximum for one player in a season.

Toure suffered an undisclosed injury against the Vikings. He fumbled away a punt return and caught one pass for -6 yards but the Packers did not report an injury in-game.

Toure’s season is now over. He caught eight passes for 78 yards over 18 targets and 11 games in 2023.

If everyone is healthy and available, the Packers will go into Sunday’s game against the Bears with Melton, Christian Watson, Romeo Doubs, Jayden Reed, Dontayvion Wicks and Malik Heath at wide receiver.

The Packers also signed safety Tyler Coyle to the practice squad, replacing Melton.

Rutgers in the NFL: Bo Melton gets his first touchdown with the Green Bay Packers

Bo Melton got his first career-touchdown with the Green Bay Packers this week.

Bo Melton grabbed his first career touchdown on Sunday as the Green Bay Packers rolled to a big Week 16 win. The former Rutgers football wide receiver having a strong overall Sunday for the Packers.

In a 33-10 win over the Minnesota Vikings, Melton had six catches for 105 yards with a touchdown.

Melton has emerged over the past couple of weeks as a significant contributor to the Packers offense. On the year (four games, he has 11 receptions for 156 yards with a touchdown).

A former All-Big Ten selection at Rutgers, Melton was a seventh-round pick of the Seattle Seahawks in the 2022 NFL draft.

Here is a look at his first career NFL touchdown, which came late in the third quarter to give the Packers a 30-3 lead over the Vikings:

On Nov. 22, the Packers elevated Melton from the practice squad to the active roster.

In 2020, his final season at Rutgers, Melton finished with 47 catches for 638 receiving yards and six touchdowns.

Stock up, stock down in 33-10 loss vs. Packers

Plenty of stocks fell, while others went up during the 33-10 loss against the Packers.

Flat. Unprepared. Disappointing.

The Green Bay Packers came into U.S. Bank Stadium and kicked the Minnesota Vikings’ playoff hopes into a ravine by a score of 33-10.

There are usually a few positives that can be found in even the worst of performances from this season. Not this one. This was bad from beginning to end.

The defense looked unprepared for the Packers’ game plan and wasn’t able to adapt. The offense looked as disjointed as they have this season after the Kirk Cousins injury.

While searching for any semblance of a positive, there will be plenty of negatives to point out from an overall perspective.

Chasing Ambulances

QB Will Levis – Injured his foot and was carted to the locker room. Test results will be known later in the week but the final game doesn’t matter much. Ryan Tannehill will replace him if needed.

QB Tua Tagovailoa – Left the blowout loss to the Ravens with an injury to his throwing shoulder. He was ruled out since the game was already out of hand but he said after the game that he was “good, just  sore.”

RB Christian McCaffrey – Left early in the second half because of a calf injury and never returned. HC Kyle Shanahan said that he thought that McCaffrey would be “alright”, but he didn’t know if McCaffrey would be available next week. The 49ers have sewn up the No. 1 seed and will likely rest several players. McCaffrey is unlikely to be seen until the 49ers first game in the Divisional Round.

RB Alvin Kamara – He was already questionable to play with an illness, but Kamara was active and effective until he injured his ankle in the first quarter after ten rushes. It was not known if he had a high ankle sprain or not. The Saints are the current No. 9 seed and would need help to reach the playoffs next week.

WR Tee Higgins – Left the game with a hamstring injury but managed to return in the third quarter.

WR Devonta Smith – Was injured while blocking near the end of the game. He was on crutches with a walking boot after the game. The prognosis wasn’t released but there should be more information early in the week. The injury was serious enough for the boot and crutches which throws a shadow onto Week 18 when they finish up at the Giants.

WR Jayden Reed – He had already caught two touchdowns when he injured his chest during the second quarter in the win over the Vikings. He underwent CT scans after the game but his prognosis has not been disclosed. The Packers host the Bears next week and need all hands on deck since the Packers are currently the No. 7 seed.

Free Agents, Flops and Other Notables

QB  Jordan Love – He was likely on many benches if his fantasy owner even made the playoffs, but the Packers quarterback is looking better and erasing some of the early season fears. He threw for 256 yards and three touchdowns at the Vikings and rushed in a touchdown as well.

RB Kyren Williams – Taken as just running back depth in summer drafts, the Rams tailback has become an elite producer and fantasy team owners in large contests did very well in Week 17 when he ran for 87 yards, gained 14 yards on two catches and totaled three touchdowns.

RB James Conner – Playing at the Eagles meant lowering expectations against the No. 1 defense against running backs. Except Conner rushed for 128 yards on 26 carries with two touchdowns as a visitor.

RB Justice Hill – The Ravens lost Keaton Mitchell, so they just switched back to Hill as the RB2. The third-down back ran for 48 yards on three carries and caught five passes for 64 yards and one score. Any back on that powerhouse team carries fantasy value.

WR Julio Jones – The Eagles receiver caught two passes for 34 yards in the loss to the Cardinals. But he scored on each and Philly may be without DeVonta Smith.

TE Isaiah Likely – The replacement for Mark Anderson is becoming a factor in games thanks to playing in an offense that likes to throw to tight ends. Likely made a one-handed catch on a reception and while he only caught two passes for 42 yards, he caught two of the eight touchdowns by a tight end this week.

TE David Njoku – Since Joe Flacco showed up, Njoku was a scoring machine with a touchdown in four straight games. He failed to score this week, but led the position with 134 yards on six catches.

WR Bo Melton – The Packers wideout was called up from the practice squad to help cover for all the wideout injuries in Week 17. He responded by leading the Packers with nine targets for six catches and 105 yards with a touchdown. It was the first 100-yard performance by any Packer receiver this year.

RB Najee Harris – He lost his job as a receiver out of the backfield, and was listed below Jaylen Warren on the depth chart. He never had a 100-yard game and scored just once in the last month. So right when you need him the most and trust him the least, Harris turned in a season-best 122 yards on 27 carries with two touchdowns.

CeeDee Lamb  –  He was already well represented on fantasy playoff teams and then helped to deliver the trophy for many when he caught 13 passes for 227 yards and a touchdown. 41.7 fantasy points is a difference-maker.

Bo Melton becomes first Packers WR to eclipse 100 receiving yards in 2023

The first Packers player to get to 100 receiving yards this season? Bo Melton in Week 17 against the Vikings, of course.

Just as everyone predicted during training camp, Bo Melton became the Green Bay Packers’ first receiver to eclipse the 100-receiving mark in a game this season.

In a 33-10 win over the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday night, Melton led the team with nine targets and finished with six receptions – tied for the team lead – totaling 105 yards and a touchdown.

Melton surpassed 100 yards on Green Bay’s final possession. With 1:48 left on the clock and the Packers facing a 3rd-and-8, Sean Clifford connected with a wide-open Melton for 37 yards.

He also caught his first touchdown pass — a 9-yard score in the second half that put the Packers up 30-3.

“He’s done a tremendous job on special teams in practice, and he’s doing a great job on scout team, and every time I give him a rep, speaking of Bo, he would go out there and make a play at practice with Jordan,” wide receivers coach Jason Vrable said.

Had it not been for Jayden Reed exiting the game at halftime with a chest injury, it very likely would have been him who topped 100 yards first. Through two quarters, Reed had 89 yards on six receptions with two touchdowns.

Melton has been a practice squad elevation in each of the last three games and has seemingly come out of nowhere offensively. Against Tampa Bay, he primarily played special teams, catching one pass for seven yards. But against Carolina, Melton delivered an efficient performance totaling 44 yards on just 15 routes ran.

While on the outside, Melton’s emergence has appeared sudden, he has been capitalizing on the opportunities that have come his way in practice recently.

“He stepped up huge,” said Jordan Love post-game. “I talk about it all the time; it’s always the next man up mentality, and Bo’s a guy whose been working every week, even when he’s not been in the role. He’s working on scout team, trying to find ways to get better, and it’s not surprising anybody when he goes out there and does what he does. He did a lot of good things.”

Due to injuries at the receiver position, specifically to Christian Watson, Dontayvion Wicks and Jayden Reed in recent weeks, which has led to them missing various amounts of practice time and created more opportunities for Melton with Jordan Love and the starting offense, helping to make his transition to Sundays more seamless.

Melton is now out of practice squad elevations, with the Minnesota game being his third. This means that if the Packers want him on the game-day roster in Week 18 against Chicago, he has to be signed to the 53-man–something that one would expect to happen this week, regardless of what the injury situation in the receiver room is.

At the beginning of the season, with all of the youth and inexperience at receiver, this position was a major question mark. But Melton’s emergence is the latest example of just deep this position group actually is for the Packers.

“We’ve seen it in practice, you guys are just seeing it now,” said Matt LaFleur. “For Bo, and for many players in general, it all starts with their attitude. This guy has been team first since the day he got here. He’s always striving to get better no matter what is asked of him.

“Whether it’s on the scout team. Whether he’s getting reps with the first team offense, whatever it may be. Whether it’s on special teams and he’s had a great attitude and mentality. We’ve all seen a lot of growth and a lot of progress from him.”

Packers WR Bo Melton catches first career touchdown pass

Green Bay Packers wide receiver Bo Melton caught his first career touchdown pass during Sunday night’s showdown with the Minnesota Vikings at U.S. Bank Stadium.

Melton’s 9-yard touchdown catch gave the Packers a 30-3 lead in the third quarter. The score capped off a 91-yard drive after the Packers held on fourth down to open the second half.

The Seattle Seahawks made Melton a seventh-round pick in the 2022 draft. He arrived in Green Bay in December of last year and is appearing in his fourth career NFL game.

Melton came into the contest with five career catches for 51 yards. He was signed to the 53-man roster for the Packers’ Thanksgiving Day win over the Detroit Lions and has been elevated from the practice squad three times.

Through three quarters vs. the Vikings, Melton has three catches for 49 yards and the touchdown, with a long catch of 28 yards.

Here’s Melton’s first career touchdown:

Melton will revert back to the practice squad on Monday and would need to be signed to the 53-man roster to play in a game for the Packers again this season. Green Bay hosts the Chicago Bears at Lambeau Field next week.

Packers elevate WR Bo Melton from practice squad for Week 17 vs. Vikings

The Packers elevated WR Bo Melton from the practice squad to the gameday roster for Week 17 vs. the Vikings.

The Green Bay Packers elevated receiver Bo Melton from the practice squad to the gameday roster for Week 17. The move was announced Saturday, making Melton available for Matt LaFleur and the Packers for Sunday night’s showdown with the Minnesota Vikings at U.S. Bank Stadium.

Melton, a second-year receiver out of Rutgers, has been elevated each of the last three weeks.

Once again, depth was needed at receiver, a position where Christian Watson (doubtful, hamstring) isn’t expected to play and Dontayvion Wicks (questionable, chest/ankle) didn’t practice all week. While the Packers will return Jayden Reed, Melton has earned more playing time after catching five passes and producing four first downs over the last two games. Last week, Melton caught a career-high four passes and delivered a couple of key conversions against the Carolina Panthers.

Melton became the fifth player to be elevated from the practice squad three times by the Packers this season.

Last week, receivers coach Jason Vrable said he really liked the way Melton has progressed over the 2023 season.

“He’s done a tremendous job on special teams in practice, and he’s doing a great job on scout team, and every time I give him a rep, speaking of Bo, he would go out there and make a play at practice with Jordan,” Vrable said.

Melton played a career-high 25 snaps on offense during last week’s win in Charlotte. He was targeted six times and finished with five touches.

The Packers also signed safety Benny Sapp III to the 53-man roster from the practice squad. Sapp was out of elevations.

Green Bay’s final injury report on Friday featured nine players with playing status designations, and the addition of Eric Stokes made it 10 on Saturday. Reinforcements from the practice squad were likely needed to complete an active 46-man roster for Sunday night.

All teams are allowed to elevate up to two players from the practice squad each week. An individual player can only be elevated from the practice squad three times per season, so Melton is out of elevations and would need to be signed to the roster to play for the Packers again this season. On Monday, Melton will revert back to the practice squad.

Packers elevate WR Bo Melton, S Benny Sapp III from practice squad for Week 16 vs. Panthers

The Packers elevated WR Bo Melton and S Benny Sapp III from the practice squad to the gameday roster for Week 16 vs. the Panthers.

The Green Bay Packers elevated receiver Bo Melton and safety Benny Sapp III from the practice squad to the gameday roster for Week 16. The move was announced Saturday, making Melton and Sapp available for Matt LaFleur and the Packers for Sunday’s showdown with the Carolina Panthers at Bank of America Stadium.

The moves provide depth at two positions dealing with injuries entering Sunday.

Melton gives the Packers another option at receiver, where Christian Watson (hamstring) is doubtful and both Jayden Reed (chest, toe) and Dontayvion Wicks (ankle) are questionable to play. This is the second straight elevation for Melton, who caught one pass on two targets for seven yards while playing 18 offensive snaps last week against the Buccaneers. He could once again factor in on pre-snap motion looks and from the slot if Reed is limited.

The other healthy receivers on the 53-man roster are Romeo Doubs, Malik Heath and Samori Toure.

Sapp was elevated for the third and final time. He can help the Packers fill in the gaps with Darnell Savage (shoulder) out and Rudy Ford now questionable due to a back injury. In his previous two games as a practice squad elevation this season, Sapp played three snaps on defense and 13 on special teams.

The Packers did not elevate a running back, suggesting A.J. Dillon (questionable, thumb) will play. Nor did they elevate a defensive lineman, so expect T.J. Slaton (questionable, knee/foot) to go on Sunday.

Green Bay’s final injury report on Friday featured 13 players with playing status designations, so LaFleur and general manager Brian Gutekunst had to be especially intentional about the practice squad elevations this week.

All teams are allowed to elevate up to two players from the practice squad each week. An individual player can only be elevated from the practice squad three times per season, so Melton has one elevation remaining and Sapp is out of elevations. On Monday, Melton and Sapp will revert back to the practice squad.

Packers WR Bo Melton showing progress, earns another elevation to gameday roster

The Packers elevated WR Bo Melton from the practice squad for Sunday vs. the Panthers.

For the second time in two weeks, the Green Bay Packers have used one of their two practice squad elevations on wide receiver Bo Melton.

The second-year pass catcher will be available for Matt LaFleur on Sunday against the Carolina Panthers.

The reason(s) that Melton was elevated this week could be two-fold. On the one hand, the Packers are a bit banged up at receiver, with Christian Watson listed as doubtful, while Jayden Reed and Samori Toure are both questionable. But the other important reason for Melton’s elevation is that he is performing well in practice.

“He’s done a tremendous job on special teams in practice,” said receivers coach Jason Vrable on Thursday, “and he’s doing a great job on scout team, and every time I give him a rep, speaking of Bo, he would go out there and make a play at practice with Jordan. Today, he caught one as well. I was like, man, I really like the way that he has progressed.”

Melton has made two appearances this season. The first came in Week 12 against Detroit, where he was signed to the 53-man roster for that one game. The second came last week against Tampa Bay. Melton has played 11 special teams snaps, all of which have come on the kick coverage unit.

After seeing only two offensive snaps against Detroit, Melton played 18 versus the Bucs. He was often utilized as a pre-snap motion man and vertical threat with that 4.34 speed he possesses–an element that has been missing with Watson sidelined.

With Melton active last week, that meant that Samori Toure was inactive. Again, there are layers to this decision, most notably that Melton has been outperforming Toure in practice, but other factors include Melton’s ability to contribute on special teams. So far this season, despite being active in nine games, Toure doesn’t have any special teams snaps.

Melton’s aforementioned speed in Watson’s absence was likely a preferred element that Green Bay wanted to have as well.

“Every day in practice the competition is open,” added Vrable. “I never tell a guy, hey, you could be the third receiver this week. If things aren’t going well and you’re not performing in practice, whether you’re not making catches or blocking or I’m not seeing things I need to see.”

We know that the Packers will be without Watson again, but now the question becomes, is Melton the preferred option at receiver over Toure, or is Green Bay going to have to rely on both pass catchers this week because of injuries to Reed and Wicks?

This season, Toure has 15 targets, including four in the Giants game, and has caught seven of them for 84 yards. Carolina isn’t exactly a common opponent, but there will be some familiarity for the Green Bay offense, going up against Panthers’ defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero, who runs a very similar style of defense as Joe Barry.

“Samori this week has had a tremendous week of practice,” Vrable said, “and maybe because he’s getting those reps, but he’s playing at a fast pace. Playing confident. Catching the football the right way. He’s attacking.

“With him and everybody else, I say, you’re only as good as that day’s practice. You’ve got to continue to stack wins. I evaluate it every day. Our staff talks and I told him this week, these last two days you’ve been on it, had a great practice, so we will see where we are at at the end of the week.”

This is now the second time that Melton has been elevated to the active game-day roster. He has one elevation remaining and after that, if Green Bay wants him available on Sundays, he will have to be signed to the 53-man roster.

Joining Melton as a game day elevation is safety Benny Sapp. With Darnell Savage already ruled out and Rudy Ford questionable, Sapp will provide needed depth. His primary role will come on special teams where he’s played 13 snaps this season. If Ford can’t go, he may see a few defensive snaps as the third safety when the Packers are in dime. This is Sapp’s third and final elevation.

It’s also worth noting that Jonathan Ford was not elevated, which is hopefully a good sign that TJ Slaton will be available. Slaton is currently listed as questionable. Without Ford or Slaton, the Packers wouldn’t have a true run-stuffing presence along the defensive front, not to mention that they would have only four interior defenders available if that were the case. Green Bay has consistently used a five-man rotation all season.
