Blue-White Game: How to watch the Penn State football spring game

How to watch Penn State’s Blue-White spring football game on Saturday

Penn State will bring a close to its spring football practice schedule on Saturday afternoon with the playing of the annual Blue-White spring game in Beaver Stadium. The spring game will return to a more traditional format this year with two teams battling for bragging rights to take into the summer, with a few players playing on both sides.

Coming off a Rose Bowl victory to cap an 11-2 season, the bar is being raised by national pundits for the Nittany Lions in 2023. Many of the featured players that will determine the fate of the season will be on display on Saturday afternoon, although how much paying time they truly see may vary. The competition for pivotal roles in the fall could see some momentum swings and confidence boosts during the spring game, while the focus for many will be on the quarterback situation.

[autotag]Drew Allar[/autotag] is assumed to be the successor to Sean Clifford at quarterback, and the spring game won’t be changing that trajectory. But after so much attention was given to the amount of playing time [autotag]Beau Pribula[/autotag] was receiving during practice this spring, it will be interesting to see how Penn State’s other quarterback could be utilized in ways Allar can’t or won’t.

Don’t expect to see Penn State break open the entire playbook during the spring game, but it will be worth paying attention to for one final taste of college football before the fall. Here’s how to watch the game.

Blue-White Game Preview: 5 defensive keys to watch

Here are 5 things to watch on the defense during Penn State’s Blue-White Game this weekend

The 2023 Blue-White Game taking place on Saturday, April 15th will be a return to a standard format, unlike the previous year. Last season, [autotag]James Franklin[/autotag] treated the game like an enhanced practice to limit any potential injuries that could happen.

This year it will be more of a full-scrimmage type of format.

Penn State is navigating through the offseason with a Top-10 preseason roster. Fans are eager to see what this team will look like and there is a potentially record breaking crowd expected to be in attendance.

Coming off their Rose Bowl Victory, there is real buzz surrounding the talented Penn State roster. Whether it’s fair or not, fans are expecting coach Franklin to get the Nittany Lions into their first ever College Football Playoff soon. For his part, it seems like Franklin also is setting those expectations.

Contributing to the hype around the team are some exciting new faces that will play prominent roles this season on the defensive side of the ball.

Here are five things to watch during the Blue-White Game on Saturday.

Blue-White Game Preview: 5 offensive keys to watch

What are the offensive keys to pay attention to during Penn State’s spring Blue-White Game?

Spring is officially here and that means team practices are underway as they lead up to the traditional Blue-White Game on Saturday.

Last year was a year with mild expectations that eventually led to a grand finale in the form of a Rose Bowl win and a total of 11 wins on the year. They started the season unranked but ended in the top ten, this year they are likely to keep that ranking and start off with larger temptations.

The defense has been ole reliable for the Nittany Lions but it may finally be the offense’s turn to take center stage. With so many young and promising faces on that side of the ball, the spring game will be a fun preview of what could be coming this season.

4-star defensive lineman in 2024 class sets visit to Penn State

Penn State set to welcome four-star defensive lineman during Blue-White Game weekend.

The Blue-White game means a ton of things for Penn State football. Getting the first look what players look like in a live setting, position battles and  welcoming the fans back into the stadium. It also serves as an opportunity to invite some recruits to come see Beaver Stadium and get a feel of the atmosphere.

One player seems excited to be making the trip to State College for the spring game festivities this weekend.

[autotag]Nigel Smith II[/autotag] is a four-star defensive lineman from Texas who will be in attendance. The 6’4″ 260 pound prospect is ranked 70th in the country according to On3’s industry comparison rankings.

He’s been a heavily recruited prospect boasting 37 scholarship offers from teams around the country. In early February, Smith cut his list to 16 schools which included Penn State. His Twitter profile has been closely following the recent commitments the Nittany Lions have gotten.

Now, it’s confirmed that he’ll be making his return to State College for the second time on Saturday.

His most visited school has been Oklahoma, going to Norman seven times. Ohio State and Texas A&M have been visited six times according to On3’s tracker. It’s no surprise that those three schools are the favorites to land Smith. Oklahoma is given a 72.2% chance by On3’s Recruiting Prediction Machine.

Penn State currently sits at a 1.4% chance, but things could change in their favor after his visit to the Blue-White Game on Saturday.

5 Things to watch in Penn State’s spring game

Penn State’s Blue-White Game is this week. Here are five things to watch.

Football is in the air in State College in the month of April, and it is that time of year once again for the annual Blue and White Game.

Penn State’s spring game has taken it up a notch in previous years under [autotag]James Franklin[/autotag] and this Penn State team is coming off one of its best years in program history. With that comes expectations being raised and more eyeballs on them.

It all starts in the spring game as mentioned but it can all be boiled down to five things that need to be looked at in the Blue and White Game.

Is there a real quarterback competition this spring?

James Franklin continues to suggest there is a real quarterback competition at Penn State this spring.

It’s long been assumed that the next quarterback of the Penn State Nittany Lions will be former five-star quarterback [autotag]Drew Allar[/autotag]. When[autotag]Sean Clifford[/autotag] graduated, Penn State fans were ready for the Allar era to be in full effect.

It seems like [autotag]James Franklin[/autotag] has some other ideas as of now.

After meeting with the media on Tuesday, it seems like the quarterback competition is as real as it gets between Allar and redshirt freshman [autotag]Beau Pribula[/autotag].

Pribula does not have the recruiting profile of Allar, the former five-star prospect and third-ranked quarterback in the class of 2022. Pribula was a three-star recruit and the 26th-ranked quarterback in the same class.

The recruiting profiles aren’t stopping Franklin from making this a true competition.

“I think those two guys are both battling, they’re two guys that we are really excited not only for this year, but for their futures,” Franklin told the media Tuesday.

When asked about how long the competition will last he said, “Until it is obvious and has been decided.”

This may remind some fans about the battle between long-time quarterback Clifford and [autotag]Will Levis[/autotag] in 2019. Clifford won the starting role and Levis transferred out of the program to Kentucky in 2021 after 14 career games for Penn State. Now, it seems like Levis might have been the better option, considering he’s expected to be a first-round draft pick in the 2023 NFL Draft.

Discussing the competition this offseason, Franklin said, “This spring is just to get those guys as many reps as we possibly can to be able to evaluate them, to create a competition and to also create depth.”

“Sometimes, it’s hard to compare and contrast because our one defense is really good and talented. So, who they’re going against is important as well. So, making sure that Drew gets some reps with the twos and Beau gets some reps with the ones and vice versa, those things are important,” Franklin told the media Tuesday.

Ultimately, it would be surprising if Allar is not the quarterback of Penn State for the 2023-24 season considering the reps he got last year. It seems like he’ll have to earn the starting position this offseason because it’s been a battle going into the Blue-White Game on April 15th.

Start time for 2023 Blue-White Game announced

Penn State has announced the start time for this year’s Blue-White spring game.

We already knew what day the Penn State Blue-White Game was going to be played. Now we know the scheduled start time.

On Tuesday, Penn State announced the official start time for this year’s spring game, the highlight of the weekend in State College. Penn State’s annual Blue-White Game will begin at 2:00 p.m. ET on Saturday, April 15.

It is unconfirmed at this point in time if the game will be available for viewing on the Big Ten Network or any other network, but that information will be made available at a later time.

Penn State will head into the 2023 Blue-White Game with a rising sense of optimism surrounding the team after an 11-2 season with a victory in the Rose Bowl to cap things off. Penn State finished at no. 7 in both the USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll and the AP Top 25, and the Nittany Lions are a trendy top 10 pick already in the various way-too-early top 25 projections for next season.

Penn State will return some key pieces on defense with the returns of [autotag]Adisa Isaac[/autotag] and [autotag]Curtis Jacobs[/autotag] to go with the rising stardom of players like [autotag]Kalen King[/autotag] and [autotag]Abdul Carter[/autotag]. The offense will continue to build confidence in the running game with [autotag]Nick Singleton[/autotag] and [autotag]Kaytron Allen[/autotag] leading the way behind an offensive line that will return [autotag]Olu Fashanu[/autotag] and introduce some new stars in the Class of 2023 with [autotag]J’ven Williams[/autotag] and [autotag]Alex Birchmeier[/autotag]. And, of course, this spring will see [autotag]Drew Allar[/autotag] step into the leading role at quarterback as the successor to Sean Clifford, who leaves Penn State after rewriting the school’s record book for the past six years.

Blue-White Game Report Card: Grading Penn State’s spring football game

The grades are in for Penn State’s performance in the Blue-White Game.

Penn State’s spring game wasn’t exactly lighting up the scoreboard, even in a modified scoring system. And fans wanting to see drastic improvement from the program that has gone .500 over the past two seasons may be left wondering if Penn State is set up for another mediocre season in Happy Valley after watching the Blue-White Game. But Penn State’s final spring practice of the year had some positive developments and some reminders that help is on the way over the summer.

And now the grades are in for Penn State’s performance during the Blue-White Game. Here’s how each position group was graded for the spring game in Beaver Stadium on Saturday.

Quarterback: C

Matthew OHaren-USA TODAY Sports

A recurring theme when it comes to the offensive grades following Penn State’s game is probably chalked up to a simple “Eh, it could have been better.” That was the basic takeaway from the performance of the quarterbacks overall, but any expectation of any passer just lighting up the spring game may have been unreasonable.

We were never likely to see a whole lot out of [autotag]Sean Clifford[/autotag], the sixth-year senior who really has little more to prove at this point. We know pretty much exactly what Clifford is, and if given time to process the field, he can make plays. But he had some overthrown passes at times. He did, however, throw the game’s only touchdown of the game.

The backup competition behind Clifford is the real storyline here, and the future of [autotag]Drew Allar[/autotag] is what fans are eager to witness. But a rough spring debut for the true freshman shows there is still work to be done in the big picture. If based solely on one afternoon, [autotag]Christian Veilleux[/autotag] proved he should be the team’s primary backup option heading into the season, although Allar should improve quickly.

Next: Grading the running backs

How many fans attended Penn State’s spring football game?

How many fans showed up for Penn State’s Blue-White Game? And where did PSU rank in spring game crowds in 2022?

For the first time since 2019, Penn State allowed fans to step into Beaver Stadium for a spring preview of the football team. The annual Blue-White Game is traditionally a big draw for Penn State, and the crowds that make their way into Beaver Stadium for a spring game or glorified scrimmage every April tends to rank among the nation’s best when it comes to spring game attendance figures.

And this year was no different.

With a reported crowd size of 62,000 fans, Penn State’s Blue-White Game will once again go in the record books as one of the top spring game crowds for the 2022 season. And, unofficially, Penn State probably locked in a top-five crowd for the spring game, if not a top three.

Oklahoma, the lone Big 12 school that generally packs a big crowd for its spring game, is a bit of a surprise spring game attendance champion. The Sooners welcomed over 75,000 fans to witness the start of the Brent Venables era and to celebrate the new statue in honor of former Heisman Trophy winner Baker Mayfield. Oklahoma fans surely took joy in comparing the spring crowd size for the Oklahoma spring game compared to USC‘s spring crowd, with former Sooners head coach Lincoln Riley taking over the Trojans this year (and bringing along former Oklahoma quarterback Caleb Williams for the ride).

An updated look at the reported spring game attendance figures across the country recently had Penn State at No. 3 overall this spring. Part of that is because some traditional heavy hitters in spring game crowds have been hampered by inclement weather leading to significant reductions in crowd size. It’s also worth considering the COVID pandemic could still be playing a small fraction into the crowd size figures for a practice that doesn’t carry near the same weight as a game in the fall.

Whatever the case, Penn State will have the largest spring crowd among Big Ten schools this season. The Nittany Lions passed Nebraska and Ohio State, two other perennial spring crowd heavyweights, with its reported attendance for the Blue-White Game. Unfortunately for Penn State, the Big Ten doesn’t award a trophy for such an achievement.
