Titans’ NFL draft record could be broken in 2024

The Titans made NFL draft history when they took Bishop Sankey in 2014, but that record could be broken in 2024.

The Tennessee Titans drafted running back Bishop Sankey out of Washington in the second round of the 2014 NFL draft, and at the time it set a record that still stands today.

When Sankey was taken with the No. 54 overall pick, it was the latest the first running back has ever come off the board in the draft in NFL history.

But that record has a chance to be broken this year, as ESPN’s Adam Schefter notes that no running back is expected to be drafted until the middle of the second round.

Unlike last year, when two running backs were drafted in Round 1, no RBs are expected to be selected Thursday night. In fact, this draft could set a mark of a different sort. It could challenge the record for the latest the first running back has been selected, which stands at No. 54 in the 2014 draft, when the Titans picked Bishop Sankey. The top running backs in the 2024 class are considered to be Brooks, Jaylen Wright (Tennessee), Blake Corum (Michigan) and Trey Benson (Florida State). Many expect the first back to be selected in the middle of Round 2.

Unfortunately for the Titans, the record is the most notable thing to come out of drafting Sankey, who played in just 29 games over two seasons before not playing another snap in the league.

Ex-Titans RB Bishop Sankey joins scouting staff for training camp

Sankey will join the Titans’ scouting staff for training camp as part of the Nunn-Wooten Scouting Fellowship.

Former Tennessee Titans running back Bishop Sankey will join the team’s scouting staff during training camp as a Nunn-Wooten Scouting Fellow, the team announced on Tuesday morning.

“The Nunn-Wooten Scouting Fellowship, created by the NFL in January 2015, exposes interested and qualified candidates to a career in professional scouting,” the NFL writes on its website. “The program will give participants a unique glimpse into Player Personnel by introducing them to various areas related to college and pro scouting within a club.”

Along with Sankey, the Titans announced that former Auburn volleyball player Chesney McLellan, who is pursuing a master’s degree at Belmont, is this year’s Amy Adams Strunk Women in Football intern.

Tennessee also has five coaches participating as part of the league’s Bill Walsh Diversity Coaching Fellowship, including Eastern Kentucky’s Jeremy Hawkins, Wisconsin’s Ashley Cornwell, Jackson State’s TC Taylor, U.S. Coast Guard Academy’s Derik Abbott, and Virginia Tech’s Justin Hamilton.

Sankey is a former second-round pick of the Titans in 2014. He played in 29 games over two seasons with the Titans, tallying 199 rushes for 762 yards, 32 catches for 272 yards, and four total touchdowns (three rushing).

The Titans waived Sankey prior to the 2016 campaign. In the next year, Sankey landed with the New England Patriots, Kansas City Chiefs and Minnesota Vikings, but never played in a game for any of the three.

Sankey then tried his hand in the Canadian Football League, but that didn’t pan out, either, and he eventually retired in 2021 at the age of 29.

The Titans are set to begin training camp on July 26.

Ex-Titans in the CFL: Bishop Sankey retires, Kendall Wright suspended

Updates on a pair of former Tennessee Titans in the CFL.

It has been a long time since Tennessee Titans fans have heard the names Bishop Sankey and Kendall Wright, but we recently received an update on their respective careers in the Canadian Football League.

The former Titans draft picks, who were teammates in 2014 and 2015, were actually teammates on the CFL’s Toronto Argonauts until now.

According to the Argonauts’ media relations page on Twitter, Wright has been suspended, while Sankey has decided to retire. It isn’t clear what is behind Wright’s suspension, though.

Sankey originally signed with Toronto in 2019 but failed to play in any games during his time there. Meanwhile, Wright was just signed by the Argonauts this year.

Sankey, 28, was a second-round pick of the Titans in 2014, but lasted only two seasons in Nashville before being waived in 2016.

He later had brief stints with the New England Patriots, Kansas City Chiefs and Minnesota Vikings, but never suited up in a regular-season game for any of those three franchises.

Wright had more success in Tennessee, spending five seasons with the team that drafted him No. 20 overall in 2012, but he still ended up being a disappointment overall.

Wright would go on to play in one season for the Chicago Bears after parting ways with the Titans following the 2016 season, but didn’t suit up in the NFL after the 2017 campaign.
