Broncos injuries: 4 players limited at Thursday’s practice

Broncos WR KJ Hamler (knee) was limited at Thursday’s practice.

The Denver Broncos are mostly healthy as they prepare for their Monday Night Football showdown with the Seattle Seahawks this week.

Broncos starting inside linebacker Jonas Griffith (elbow) fully participated in Thursday’s practice, which is a great sign for his availability this week. Elsewhere on the injury front, outside linebacker Randy Gregory (shoulder/knee), inside linebacker Josey Jewell (calf), right tackle Billy Turner (knee/hip) and wide receiver KJ Hamler (knee/hip) were limited Thursday.

Denver’s complete injury report can be seen below.

Broncos hoping Billy Turner will play ‘whole game’ vs. Seahawks

“We definitely want him to play the whole game,” Broncos coach Nathaniel Hackett said of OL Billy Turner.

Before the Denver Broncos released their Week 1 depth chart, coach Nathaniel Hackett seemingly let it slip on Tuesday that Billy Turner is the team’s first-choice option at right tackle.

Turner was sidelined for much of the summer while recovering from a knee injury, but he’s practicing this week and Hackett said Tuesday that the team is hopeful he will play the “whole game” against the Seattle Seahawks on Sept. 12.

“We definitely want him to play the whole game,” Hackett said. “I’ve been in the building for a long time, so I trust that he will let us know if he’s ready to go.”

Elsewhere on the injury front, Broncos outside linebacker Randy Gregory (shoulder) and inside linebacker Jonas Griffith (elbow) have also been practicing this week. Hackett’s hoping to see them get comfortable being back on the field before Monday’s opener.

“Just [wanting to] have all the guys getting comfortable, comfortable in their set,” the coach said. “Billy, particularly, just comfortable in his sets and everything so he’s ready to go. He’s a veteran, so he will know if he’s ready to rock.”

Denver’s final Week 1 injury report will be released on Saturday.

Broncos injuries: 4 players trending toward playing in Week 1

The Broncos are hopeful that Tyrie Cleveland, Billy Turner, Randy Gregory and Jonas Griffith will all be available in Week 1.

The Denver Broncos seem to have mostly good news on the injury front as they prepare for a Monday Night Football showdown with the Seattle Seahawks in Week 1.

After missing all of preseason with a throat injury, wide receiver/special teams ace Tyrie Cleveland now appears to be on track for Sept. 12.

“That’s what we’re aiming for … he’s going to be able to get some reps [at practice],” Broncos coach Nathaniel Hackett said earlier this week. “We’re very excited for him to get back.”

The Broncos have also said that they’re aiming for offensive lineman Billy Turner (knee) and outside linebacker Randy Gregory (shoulder) to be ready for Week 1, but they’re being cautious with both players.

“We still want to be careful with both of those guys because of the severity of those things,” Hackett said. “We’ll keep continuing to work them in.”

Hackett also said the Broncos are “crossing our fingers” that inside linebacker Jonas Griffith (elbow) will be available against Seattle.

We’ll know more when the Broncos release their first injury report of the season next week.

Broncos OL Billy Turner ‘getting back into the groove of football’

After missing training camp with a knee injury, Broncos OL Billy Turner is back and aiming to get fit in time for the team’s season opener.

After missing all of training camp with a knee injury, Denver Broncos offensive lineman Billy Turner was activated off the physically unable to perform list this week, making him eligible to practice.

Turner is way behind his teammates from a physical standpoint, but he’s been taking mental reps all summer and he spent three years in Nathaniel Hackett’s offense with the Green Bay Packers. So while he’ll have to work up his fitness, Turner should have a pretty good understanding of the offense.

“I know what it takes to go and play a game for 60 minutes against any team in this league,” Turner said Monday. “It’s not a mental aspect as much as it is the physical and the timing part — getting back into the groove of football.

“These other guys out here have had a two-and-a-half to three-week head start on me. It’s time to pick up and recover that ground as I go on as quick as possible.”

Once he’s fully recovered, Turner will presumably compete for the starting right tackle spot. He can also play as a guard, but the Broncos have good depth inside, so Turner might be most helpful at tackle.

Denver’s coaching staff is hoping that Turner will be good to go in time for the team’s season opener against the Seattle Seahawks on Sept. 12.

Broncos injuries: Randy Gregory, Billy Turner activated off PUP list

Mostly good news on the injury front for the Broncos this week.

Reinforcements are on the way.

The Denver Broncos activated outside linebacker Randy Gregory (shoulder) and offensive lineman Billy Turner (knee) off the physically unable to perform list on Monday, the team announced.

That means the two players are now eligible to practice again, but it doesn’t necessarily mean both players will jump into starting spots right away.

The Broncos are hopeful that both players will be ready to face the Seattle Seahawks on Monday Night Football in Week 1, but the team won’t rush them in their respective recoveries. It remains to be seen if either player will get any snaps in the team’s final two preseason games.

Elsewhere on the injury front, coach Nathaniel Hackett confirmed Monday that inside linebacker Jonas Griffith (elbow) will miss 4-6 weeks. Denver signed veteran Joe Schobert to help replace Griffith in the meantime.

Hackett also announced that guard Netane Muti had a knee procedure. The offensive lineman will be week-to-week going forward.

Additionally, Hackett said running back Melvin Gordon (foot) and running back Ronald Darby (chest) will be day-to-day this week.

The Broncos will face the Buffalo Bills on the road in Week 2 of preseason on Saturday.

Broncos lose another offensive lineman to PUP list

Broncos OL Tom Compton (back) will be placed on the PUP list. Denver’s also without OL Billy Turner (knee) to begin training camp.

After opting to let Bobby Massie walk during free agency, the Denver Broncos re-signed Calvin Anderson and brought in veterans Billy Turner and Tom Compton. The trio of tackles were set to compete for the right tackle job at training camp, but Anderson is now the last man standing.

The Broncos placed Turner (knee) on the physically unable to perform list on Tuesday, then Compton (back) was held out of practice on Wednesday.

“He had a back procedure, so he’s going to be out for a little bit and he’s going to be put on PUP,” coach Nathaniel Hackett said after practice.

Compton did not appear on the NFL’s transaction wire on Wednesday, so he will presumably officially go on the PUP list tomorrow.

“It’s something that has come up in the past and we wanted to make sure we took care of it as soon as we could,” Hackett said of Compton’s injury.

Hackett said Compton will be out “for a little bit,” but he wasn’t willing to give a timeline for when Turner will return.

“We are just playing that whole thing by ear,” the coach said. “We just want to be sure that we work him in the right way. Billy is so great with his body. [He] understands it. We just communicate. We have been together for a while, and I know what he’s all about. We will get him in at the right time.”

With Turner and Compton both sidelined, Denver brought back Cam Fleming on a one-year contract.

“We always try to have 15 healthy bodies at that position,” Hackett said. “That’s why there are always three groups to go, especially with the preseason game. I think that’s just one of those things that because of that, we want to be sure we have good depth there.”

Until Turner and/or Compton return, Anderson will be the front runner at right tackle.

5 notes from Day 1 of Broncos training camp

“We feel really good about this team,” Broncos GM George Paton said.

The Denver Broncos took to the practice field for Day 1 of training camp on Wednesday. Following the arrival of a new coaching staff and a new star quarterback in Russell Wilson, expectations are high in Denver.

“We know expectations are higher than they’ve ever been here,” general manager George Paton said during his pre-camp press conference on Tuesday. “We’re not blind to that. We embrace expectations, but we have a long way to go. We haven’t won here in five, six years.

“We won seven games last year. We’re 0-0 now. The work starts now, [and there’s] a lot of work to be done. I know we’re going to embrace the process, and I look forward to the journey with Coach [Nathaniel] Hackett, with this team, and everyone involved.”

Here are five quick notes on the Broncos following the first day of practice at the team’s UCHealth Training Center in Englewood.

Broncos place OLB Randy Gregory, OL Billy Turner on PUP list

Broncos OLB Randy Gregory and OL Billy Turner will begin training camp on the PUP list.

The Denver Broncos are placing two key players on the active/physically unable to perform list ahead of the start of training camp.

Broncos outside linebacker Randy Gregory (shoulder) will begin camp on the PUP list, according to a report from KUSA-TV’s Mike Klis. Gregory will be joined on the list by offensive lineman Billy Turner (knee), per Klis.

Gregory signed a five-year, $70 million contract with Denver earlier this year. He’s expected to start across from Bradley Chubb once he recovers from an offseason shoulder procedure.

Turner signed a one-year deal with the Broncos in March after he was cut by the Green Bay Packers with a failed physical designation. Turner’s still working his way back from a knee injury he suffered during the 2021 season. Once healthy, Turner is expected to compete for the right tackle job.

Players placed on the active/PUP list before training camp are not eligible to practice, but they can be elevated off the list any time before the regular season begins.

If a player stays on the PUP list through preseason and is not elevated before the regular season, he then reverts to the reserve/PUP list and has to sit out the first six weeks of the season. Gregory and Turner are both expected to be back on the practice field well before Week 1.

Ranking the AFC West offensive tackle duos

Ranking the AFC West offensive tackle duos

Offenses rely heavily on the pass protectors in order to be able to execute their plays. If the edge rushers get into the backfield, it doesn’t matter how open the receivers get, the quarterback isn’t getting the ball to them.

The common theme in the AFC West seems to be quality left tackles, with less talent at the right tackle spot. You’re only as strong as your weakest link, after all.

1. Denver Broncos

Starters: LT Garrett Bolles, RT Billy Turner

After some troubles early in his career, Bolles has become one of the best tackles in football. He was second-team All-Pro a season ago and was still among the highest-rated tackles this season. Meanwhile, Billy Turner has quietly played pretty well at right tackle, giving up just three sacks last season.

2. Kansas City Chiefs

Starters: LT Orlando Brown Jr, RT Lucas Niang

Brown headed to his third straight Pro Bowl last season, his first with the Chiefs since they acquired him in a trade with the Baltimore Ravens. He gave up just four sacks last season. On the other side, Niang has taken ahold of the right tackle job and performed pretty well over nine starts last season. The 2020 third-round pick gave up just two sacks from the right side.

3. Los Angeles Chargers

Starters: LT Rashawn Slater, RT Trey Pipkins

As a rookie first-round pick, Slater headed to the Pro Bowl. That says all you need to know about his talent level. There is some uncertainty on the other side, but Pipkins looked fairly good in two late-season starts — giving up no sacks — that if they decide to go with him, they could feel confident in doing so.

4. Las Vegas Raiders

Starters: LT Kolton Miller, RT Alex Leatherwood

Miller can hang with the best in the division at left tackle. There’s no question about that. But there are serious questions about the other side. Leatherwood has been lining up there throughout the offseason after playing himself out of a job four games into last season. It’s no certainty he continues to be the first-team right tackle, but the fact that he’s been lining up there so far says there aren’t any great options there.

Broncos’ offensive line competition could drag out into preseason

Who will the Broncos start on the OL this year? That’s tough to predict because the competition’s just getting started.

Who’s going to start on the offensive line for the Denver Broncos this season?

Your guess is as good as ours.

The Broncos have multiple options at every position on the line but only four starting spots up for grabs. Right now, it only seems safe to say one job — Garett Bolles at left tackle — is a lock.

At guard, Denver’s list of candidates includes Graham Glasgow, Dalton Risner, Quinn Meinerz, Netane Muti and rookie Luke Wattenberg. Five players competing for two spots.

At center, Lloyd Cushenberry is the incumbent, but Meinerz, Glasgow and Wattenberg could all push him for the starting job due to their versatility.

At right tackle, Billy Turner and Tom Compton will be competing with Calvin Anderson to replace Bobby Massie, who started in 2021.

With a new head coach, a new offensive coordinator, a new offensive line coach and a new blocking scheme, the Broncos could see several shakeups on the offensive line this summer, so projecting a starting lineup is tough this early in the offseason.

It might not get much easier to predict until the end of preseason, either, because Denver’s staff has a big competition planned.

“It’s going to be a competitive environment in that room all the way through training camp,” offensive coordinator Justin Outten said on June 14. “Like I’ve said before, when the pads come on, that’s traditionally when you start to see the movement and you see the solidification up front. That’s when you get an idea of who your guys are going to be.”

Outten wouldn’t give a timeline for when the starting five would be chosen other than to say “ideally” it will be decided by Week 1. May the best five win.
