LeBron James has famously reached the NBA Finals 10 times, ranking third in conference titles behind only Bill Russell and Sam Jones. This is a pretty amazing feat considering he has played in a 30-team era where three playoff rounds are required to make the championship series, compared to often just one in the 1960s when Russell and Jones played.

However, there’s a caveat: while Russell played in the toughest conference (or division, as it was called then) in each of his seasons in the league, LeBron has only done so in five of his 21 years as a pro – just 23.81 percent of the time.

Among the greatest players ever, this puts him near the bottom in terms of conference difficulty faced, per HoopsHype research.

In contrast, Dirk Nowitzki spent 19 of his 21 years in the league playing in the strongest conference, the most of any player. That he made all those playoff runs under those circumstances and without All-Star sidekicks says a lot about how underrated his career is.

Below, we’ve ranked the players in our HoopsHype78 based on how frequently they competed in the toughest of the two conferences (defined by the most regular season wins).

Does Boston Celtics Hall of Fame big man Bill Russell get enough respect?

It is a known fact that Boston Celtics Hall of Fame big man Bill Russell did not get the love he deserved while winning championships for the Celtics as a player or a coach.

It is a known fact Boston Celtics Hall of Fame big man Bill Russell did not get the love he deserved while winning championships for the Celtics as a player or a coach. While leading the team to 11 championships, he was not met with sold-out stadiums. Instead, Russell had to deal with the cruelty of racism on and off the court.

Now, the NBA Finals MVP honor is named after the Hall of Famer. He received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and many players have shared the influence Russell had on them. Although, when ranking the NBA top 10 best players of all time, the player with the most championship is not even cemented in many lists. Does Bill Russell get enough respect?

Celtics Champion and host of Boston Celtics Radio Network Cedric Maxwell recently joined the CLNS Media “Celtics Beat” podcast to reflect on the matter in the following clip.

Boston Celtics legends Bill Russell and Red Auerbach give a lesson on getting rebounds

The two Boston greats demonstrate proper rebounding technique in the classic clip from the ‘Red on Round Ball’ series.

There may have never been a greater rebounder in NBA history than Boston Celtics Hall of Fame big man Bill Russell, and no better general manager than Celtics icon Red Auerbach. And if you were to combine the legendary talent assessor and the most unstoppable board collector the game has ever seen in a training session on how to pull down rebounds, you’d have the best possible teachers on your side.

This was not lost on Auerbach, who put together a series of instructional clips called “Red on Round Ball” that he had his famous players help with. Russell and Auerbach teamed to do one on rebounding.

Take a look at the clip embedded below courtesy of the NBA’s YouTube channel, and, as an added bonus, you will hear Auerbach casually drop his G.O.A.T. argument into the conversation.

Who was the better player – Boston Celtics big man Bill Russell, or Los Angeles Lakers icon Wilt Chamberlain?

The two friends and rivals tried their hands at this old debate in this interview.

There may have never been and likely will never be a greater rivalry in the history of the NBA than there once was between Boston Celtics legendary big man Bill Russell and iconic Los Angeles Lakers center Wilt Chamberlain. The two Hall of Fame frontcourt phenoms famously went at it in the NBA Finals a dozen times, with the Celtics Russell winning a dominant 8 of those 12 meetings on his way to an NBA-record 11 championships.

But on the offensive end of the court, Chamberlain more than doubled the Boston legend’s output and had close to 3,000 more rebounds over the course of their respective careers. Which one was the better player?

Such arguments require firmer definitions of what one means when one says “best,” but the two fierce competitors and lifelong friends kept the debate going long after they had stopped playing, as can be seen in the video embedded below.

Interviewed by Ahmad Rashad on their historic rivalry, watch the video yourself to see what the duo had to say.

Just how important was Celtics icon Bill Russell’s impact on the NBA in its early years?

The Celtics legend and the excellence he sparked with his team fueled rivalries that spurred interest in the nascent league.

One can make a convincing case that without Boston Celtics Hall of Fame big man Bill Russell, there likely would not have been the Celtics dynasty of the late 1950s and 1960s.

But there might not even have been an NBA to speak of in the modern era without Russell and his battles with lifelong friend and rival Wilt Chamberlain. Or the Russell-led Celtics’ battles with the Los Angeles Lakers and Philadelphia 76ers, keeping a young and poorly watched NBA afloat and relevant in its early years. Just how important was Russell’s impact on the NBA in its early years in helping to spark interest in what was barely seen as a professional league in its first decade of existence?

After his passing, the hosts of the CLNS Media “A-List” podcast explored the Celtics icon’s contributions to the league, his team, and the world more generally.

To celebrate his life and legacy, a panel that includes Adam Silver, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Paul Pierce and many others put together a video for TNT.

When it comes to why the NBA decided to globally retire the number of Hall of Fame Boston Celtics big man Bill Russell after his passing this past July, it was not just his unmatched achievements on the basketball court.

A pivotal figure of the U.S. civil rights movement of the 1960s who kept up his humanitarian efforts up to his death, Russell touched the lives of millions in ways too profound to easily grace the page in textual form.

To celebrate his life and legacy, a panel of such people that includes NBA Commissioner Adam Silver, Los Angeles Lakers legends Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Jerry West, Celtics icon Paul Pierce, fellow Hoops Hall member Shaquille O’Neal, Charles Barkley, Kenny Smith and Ernie Johnson and many others put together a video for TNT.

Watch the clip embedded below to see it in full, and to reflect on the sort of man the world still sorely needs today who will never be forgotten.

The relationship between Bill Russell and Red Auerbach that made the Boston Celtics champions

Their mutual respect and drive to win created the Celtics’ dynasty.

The ties between legendary Boston Celtics head coach and general manager Red Auerbach and Hall of Fame Boston big man Bill Russell created one of  the most fruitful on-court relationships in the history of the NBA. It produced an unprecedented 11 championships.

It was a friendship and partnership based on respect, honesty and an indomitable desire to win that saw each amplify the other in their common goal of winning at the highest level in their chosen sport. Through their mutual interest in NBA excellence, they set the stage for the golden age of the Celtics, firmly establishing Boston as a premier franchise in the league, and the NBA as a serious player in the world of sports.

To hear more about how that partnership began and played out, watch the video embedded below put together by the folks at NBC Sports Boston.

Bill Russell’s bond with the Boston Celtics organization

Though his abuse at the hands of Bostonians complicated his relationship with the city, Bill Russell bled green when it came to the Celtics.

For some fans of the NBA and Boston Celtics, Hall of Fame big man Bill Russell is a name from the distant past. An apocryphal figure whose 11 titles and five MVP awards were from a time long ago in a league that was very different.

But for the NBA itself and the Celtics organization, the presence of Russell was never far even in the years Russell was out of the public eye as the Boston great’s support and mentorship of players and coaches continued. The Celtics in particular benefitted from his love of the organization if not the city, and several related how his influence affected their own careers.

Watch the video embedded below to hear from Doc Rivers and Kendrick Perkins about Russell’s impact on them and the 2008 Banner 17 title team.

Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce reflect on Bill Russell’s legacy: ‘He was what greatness was all about’

The duo of Boston icons had plenty to say about the greatest Celtics player of all time.

When it comes to greatness on the Boston Celtics, there are few who one might rank above Hall of Fame Celtics forwards Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett. But that duo of Boston icons had plenty to say about the greatest Celtics player of all time and perhaps the greatest in the history of the league itself — legendary Boston big man Bill Russell.

Between his risky and historically important humanitarianism and the 11 titles with all the accompanying accolades that came with them, there will never be a greater winner than Russell, nor a better person to emulate beyond the court.

The Big Ticket and The Truth recently got together to sing the praises of the late, great Russell in a clip put together for the Showtime Basketball YouTube channel.

Take a look at the clip embedded above to hear what the duo had to say.

Renowned NBA journalist Jackie MacMullan credits Celtics’ Bill Russell for being ‘fearless’

‘This man was a fearless civil rights activist at a time when our country was really very racially divided,’ said Jackie Mac.

“I would argue (that Boston Celtics Hall of Fame big man Bill Russell) was the most important and impactful athletes that ever lived,” offered renowned sports journalist Jackie MacMullan in an interview on ESPN’s “Sports Center” show after news broke of Russell’s death at age 88 this past Sunday.

“Certainly the most impactful basketball player,” she added, a legend in her field in her own right. “I don’t say that he won at every level — which he did — I don’t say that because he won 11 championships in 13 seasons, which will never, ever be duplicated. I say that because in the face of all that, there was so much to lose.”

“This man was a fearless civil rights activist at a time when our country was really very racially divided,” added MacMullan.

The famed sports journalist had plenty more to say about the Celtics legend in the clip embedded above.

Watch it in full to get MacMullan’s perspective on a true legend of our times, both on and off the court.
