Former Broncos Bill Kollar and Tim Tebow inducted into College Football Hall of Fame

Congrats to former Broncos DL coach Bill Kollar and former quarterback Tim Tebow for being inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame!

Former Denver Broncos coach Bill Kollar and former quarterback Tim Tebow were inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame on Tuesday. The two were first elected to the Hall of Fame in January.

Tebow was a college standout at the University of Florida, where he was a member of two national championship-winning teams, in 2007 and 2009. He was drafted 25th overall by the Denver Broncos in the 2010 NFL draft. In 2011, Tebow’s fourth-quarter heroics led the Broncos to a wild-card playoff berth. Denver made it to the AFC divisional game before losing to Tom Brady’s New England Patriots. After that season, Tebow was traded to the New York Jets when the Broncos signed Hall of Fame quarterback Peyton Manning. Tebow is now an ESPN college football analyst.

Kollar was one of the masterminds behind the 2015 “No-Fly Zone” defense that helped Denver win Super Bowl 50. In college at Montana State, Kollar had a stellar 1973 season, when he recorded 17 tackles, one sack, three fumble recoveries and three pass breakups. Kollar is the first former Bobcat to be enshrined in the College Football Hall of Fame.

The College Football Hall of Fame announced 22 new honorees are joining their ranks on Monday, and two former Denver Broncos are in the class.
Former Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow and longtime Denver defensive assistant coach Bill Kollar were elected into the Hall of Fame from a national ballot of more than 170 players and 40 coaches.
Tebow was drafted by the Broncos 25th overall in the 2010 NFL draft out of the University of Florida, two spots behind teammate Demaryius Thomas, who became one of Tebow’s go-to targets during his Denver tenure. Tebow led the Broncos to the 2011 playoffs, winning the AFC West that year. In the 2011 AFC Wild Card game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, Tebow hooked up with Thomas in what has become one of the most iconic moments in franchise history, an 80-yard overtime touchdown. “Tebowmania” gripped the nation, before Denver signed Pro Football Hall of Famer Peyton Manning ahead of the 2012 season.
Kollar has been a long-time Denver assistant coach, and had an integral role in the 2015 “No-Fly Zone” defense that set NFL marks for being one of the best units in history. Kollar’s election into the College Football Hall of Fame stems from his time as a defensive tackle at Montana State, where he made 17 tackles, one sack, three pass breakups and had three fumble recoveries in the 1973 season. Kollar is the first Bobcat to receive the honor of election into the Hall of Fame.

Tim Tebow, Bill Kollar among candidates for 2023 College Football Hall of Fame

Ex-Broncos QB Tim Tebow and assistant coach Bill Kollar are among the candidates for 2023 College Football Hall of Fame class.

The National Football Foundation announced 176 players and 42 coaches who will be on the ballot for the 2023 College Football Hall of Fame.

Included on the ballot are four connections to the Denver Broncos, including former Florida quarterback Tim Tebow. After winning two national titles and the Heisman Trophy with the Gators, Tebow went on to spend two seasons with the Broncos to begin his NFL career.

Broncos defensive/special projects coach Bill Kollar also made the ballot in recognition of his standout college career as a defensive end at Montana State. Kollar earned first-team All-American honors in 1973 and then won Senior Bowl MVP recognition in 1974. After college, Kollar spent eight years as a defensive lineman in the NFL before transitioning to coaching in 1984.

Former Broncos executive Matt Russell is also on the ballot. Russell was a star defender at Colorado, winning the Butkus Award, given to the nation’s best linebacker. He went on to spend three years in the NFL before a brief stint as a college coach and then a switch to scouting. He worked in Denver from 2009-2020 and now serves as a senior personnel executive with the Philadelphia Eagles.

Former Illinois linebacker Simeon Rice is also on the ballot, but his tenure with the Broncos was brief. Rice totaled 44.5 sacks with the Illini before going on to play for the Arizona Cardinals and Tampa Bay Buccaneers, winning a Super Bowl with the Bucs. He signed with Denver in 2007 but only played in six games and was cut halfway through the season.

The College Football Hall of Fame class will be announced in early 2023 followed by an induction ceremony in December next year.
