Big Ten Football: Cornhuskers see Big Ten West hopes slip away

Nebraska’s Big Ten West title hopes took a massive hit on Saturday with their loss to Maryland.

Week 11 of the 2023 college football season is in the books, and it helped determine quite a bit in the race for the Big Ten Championship Game.

The most significant result was in Happy Valley, as Penn State’s offense faltered against Michigan in a 24-15 loss. Following the loss, James Franklin fired offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich and now will search for his sixth offensive coordinator in his tenure at Penn State. Franklin will be entering year 11 with the Nittany Lions next fall.

Northwestern pulled off a surprising win with a big 24-7 win over Wisconsin to improve to 5-5 on the season. David Braun continues to do a fantastic job in Evanston.

Elsewhere, Ohio State dominated Michigan State 38-3, Iowa shutout Rutgers 22-0, and Purdue had a huge day offensively against Minnesota in a 49-30 win.

Illinois and Indiana had one of the most entertaining games of the year, with the Illini defeating the Hoosiers 48-45 in overtime with quarterback Joe Paddock throwing for over 500 yards. There was also, of course, the Cornhuskers falling to Maryland 13-10 on a last-minute field goal by the Terrapins.

Big Ten Football: Nebraska still in the Big Ten West race despite loss

Despite a loss to Michigan State, Nebraska remains in the Big Ten West race

Another week of the 2023 college football season has passed in the Big Ten. Last week, the Big Ten saw five games played throughout the conference, with three being decided by one score.

In Piscataway, Rutgers gave Ohio State all they could handle, but the Buckeyes were able to pull away late on Saturday en route to a 35-16 victory. In College Park, Penn State routed Maryland thanks to a big fourth-quarter effort, giving the Nittany Lions a 51-15 win and handing the Terrapins their fourth straight loss.

Iowa and Northwestern lived up to the hype of two terrible offenses going at it at Wrigley Field. The Hawkeyes were able to win 10-7 on a Drew Sanders field goal in the final seconds.

The Illinois Fighting Illini rallied in the final minutes of their matchup against Minnesota to win 27-26 in Minneapolis, while the Cornhuskers were beaten by Michigan State in East Lansing 20-17.

Big Ten Football: Where does Nebraska stand in the Big Ten West

The race in the Big Ten West is coming down to the wire.

It was a smaller slate of games in Week 9 for the Big Ten Conference, with just five games being played last week.

One of those games was, of course, the Huskers’ 31-14 win over the Purdue Boilermakers, giving Matt Rhule’s program their fifth win in their last six games. With the win, the Cornhuskers, like most of the Big Ten West, control their destiny. It’s straightforward, if the Huskers can win out the remainder of their schedule, they’ll represent the Big Ten West in the Big Ten Championship game in December in Indianapolis.

Beyond the Huskers and Boilermakers, the Big Ten also saw the now No. 1 Ohio State Buckeyes defeat the Wisconsin Badgers 24-10 in Madison behind a big day from Treyveon Henderson.

Penn State survived an upset scare from Indiana, the Hoosiers and Nittany Lions being tied late in the fourth quarter before a 57-yard touchdown pass in the final minutes won the game for Penn State.

Northwestern won their fourth game of the season with a 33-27 win over Maryland, the Terrapins third consecutive loss, and Minnesota defeated Michigan State 27-12, giving the Spartans their sixth straight loss.
