Big Ten Power Rankings: How the conference’s 18 teams rank entering the spring

How do the Big Ten’s 18 teams rank heading into the spring?

It’s been an eventful season in all of college football but especially in the Big Ten.

It was less than a month ago that the Michigan Wolverines won the national championship but yet it feels much longer. In an offseason that was already going to be historic thanks to conference realignment, the entire landscape of college football continued to change including Jim Harbaugh leaving Michigan just a week after delivering a national championship to his alma mater.

Some Big Ten programs attacked the transfer portal in major ways, others saw their rosters raided by the portal and are having to start over this offseason. But now with the dust settling, how does the Big Ten’s 18 teams rank entering the spring?

Michigan State basketball had a pretty darn good week.

The Spartans avoided an upset bid from Minnesota earlier in the week and finally picked up its first road win of the season on Sunday over Maryland to close out the week. Michigan State wasn’t at its best in either game but still found a way to win, which is really promising for the Spartans.

So where does Michigan State sit in our updated power rankings?

Way-too-early power rankings for the new Big Ten Conference in 2024

Check out where MSU ranks in the 2024 way-too-early Big Ten power rankings:

The 2023 college football season has come and gone, and now there is much anticipation for what is to come in 2024.

In 2024, fans will watch the new look Big Ten Conference, as the conference adds former Pac-12 powerhouses Oregon, UCLA, USC and Washington. In addition, the new 12-team College Football Playoff will debut next season, and the Big Ten has more than a few teams expected to end up in the mix there.

The new look Big Ten will bring numerous new matchups and interesting conversations when conference play unfolds, but let’s start the conversation with way-too-early power rankings:

LOOK: CBB analyst Dane Fife puts MSU basketball near top of his Big Ten rankings

College basketball analyst Dane Fife lists MSU as one of the top teams in the Big Ten

College basketball analyst Dane Fife is high on the Spartans.

Fife — who was a longtime assistant coach under Tom Izzo at Michigan State — released his current Big Ten rankings and he has the Spartans near the top of the league. Michigan State comes in at No. 5 on his list behind only Wisconsin (No. 1), Purdue (No. 2), Indiana (No. 3) and Northwestern (No. 4).

Michigan State is 10-7 overall on the year. The Spartans are 2-4 in Big Ten play.

Having Michigan State at No. 5 seems about right from what we’ve seen out of the Spartans recently. But the rest of his list has some head-scratchers for sure — check out the complete rankings below:

Updated way-too-early power rankings for new expanded Big Ten Conference in 2024

An early look at what the power rankings should be for the new expanded Big Ten Conference at the start of the 2024 offseason.

Update: We originally released these power rankings on Thursday, but a lot has happened since then that has altered the landscape of the Big Ten. From Washington losing their head coach Kalen DeBoer, to Ohio State getting some massive announcements that key players are returning for 2024, it’s clear that things have changed. On top of that, the Oregon Ducks have added a pair of elite transfer portal players, improving their outlook for the season as well. Because of this, we updated the ‘way-too-early’ power rankings at the top. The updates only impacted the top 8 teams; everyone below that stayed in their original spots.

The 2023 college football season has officially come to an end, which means that the past several days have been spent prematurely looking ahead to the 2024 season and what it might bring.

What it will bring is a completely new era of college football. Conference realignment will bring the death of a Power Five conference, and an expanded College Football Playoff will allow 12 teams to compete for a championship. As the week has gone on, we’ve looked at ESPN’s way-too-early Top 25 rankings, and we also made some predictions of our own, projecting which 12 teams will ultimately make it into the first expanded playoff.

Now we want to look at the predictions by conference. The Oregon Ducks, along with USC, UCLA, and Washington, are joining the Big Ten Conference, where they will compete with Michigan, Ohio State and Penn State for a conference title.

With the transfer portal still churning and recruiting classes yet to be finalized, it’s a bit too early to get a perfect look at roster construction for each school, but at this moment in time, here are our power rankings for the 2024 season in the Big Ten:

Michigan State’s hot streak came to a screeching halt on Sunday and because of that the Spartans have dropped in our weekly power rankings.

The Spartans fell at Northwestern on Sunday evening to snap a five-game winning streak and prove that Michigan State still has a lot to work on. But how far should the Spartans drop after the road loss?

Big Ten Basketball Power Rankings: Spartans rise after staying hot to end December

See where MSU and the rest of the league lands in our weekly Big Ten basketball power rankings

Michigan State basketball is back near the top of the league in our weekly power rankings after a strong finish to December.

The Spartans fought off a pesky Indiana State team on Saturday to increase its winning streak to four games. The win also moved Michigan State to 8-5 overall on the year and capped off its non-conference slate at 8-3.

Michigan State and the rest of the league will return to conference play this week, with Big Ten games picking up again on Tuesday. So where does the Spartans sit in comparison to the rest of the league now that they are playing better ball?

Way-too-early 2024 Big Ten Power Rankings: Oregon and Michigan battle for top spot

A way-too-early look at the 2024 Big Ten Power Rankings with the new additions from the West Coast joining the fold.

The 2023 season may not be completely wrapped up just yet, with an entire bowl season left to go before we can crown a champion, but that doesn’t mean that it’s too early to start getting a lay of the land for what’s to come.

Looking ahead to the 2024 season, we certainly are in for something quite entertaining.

Thanks to conference realignment, the entire landscape will look drastically different a year from now, and it will culminate in the first-ever 12-team College Football Playoff at the end of the year. What we’re focused on is the Big Ten, where the group of Oregon, Washington, USC, and UCLA will head east and join a new conference.

So how do those four former Pac-12 teams fit in with their new compatriots? It’s hard to predict exactly, because we will are in the midst of the transfer portal, learning which players teams are adding or subtracting each and every day. However, based on past performance, expected departures, and additions via recruiting cycles and the portal, we can at least set up a framework for how to view the balance of power in the Big Ten going forward.

Here’s our first official Big Ten Power Ranking for the 2024 season:
