Learn about Big Ten football teams and their coaches from an expert

Our friend @MarkRogersTV talked about his experience at #B1G media days. Learn about the teams #USC will soon join.

Our friend Mark Rogers runs the USC YouTube channel at his site, The Voice of College Football. We join Mark every Monday night for our weekly show. The USC channel at The Voice of College Football has additional USC spin-off shows such as Trojan Conquest Live with Tim Prangley and Rick Anaya, plus our upcoming live postgame shows after every USC football game this season.

Mark Rogers doesn’t just run his USC channel. He has lots of other team-specific channels. He covers a lot of teams in the Big Ten Conference and was able to attend Big Ten media days as a credentialed journalist. Yes, Big Ten media days — held last week in Indianapolis — were overshadowed by Colorado leaving for the Big 12 and all the realignment stories created by that very significant development. Nevertheless, Mark was there at Lucas Oil Stadium. He asked questions to Big Ten coaches. He was able to see the 14 Big Ten coaches perform on a public stage.

USC fans will find Mark’s comments interesting. The Big Ten segment of our recent show with Mark begins at the 49-minute mark of the video below.

Husker volleyball player named preseason All-Big Ten

A Nebraska volleyball player was named to the Preseason All-Big Ten Team.

A Nebraska volleyball player was named to the Preseason All-Big Ten Team. Junior Lexi Rodriguez was one of three players unanimously selected to the team by the league’s 14 head coaches.

The Huskers were also picked to finish second in the conference. Wisconsin was selected to win the Big Ten this season.

Rodriguez is a two-time All-American and All-Big Ten selection. She was also a Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year and the AVA National Freshman of the Year in 2021.

In 2022, Nebraska finished with a record of 26-6 overall and 16-4 in the conference. They ended the season with a Regional loss to Oregon in five sets.

Husker players talk about head coach Matt Rhule

Nebraska sent three players to represent the team at Big Ten media days last week.

Nebraska sent three players to represent the team at Big Ten media days last week. Offensive lineman Ethan Piper, linebacker Luke Reimer, and quarterback Jeff Sims joined head coach Matt Rhule in Indianapolis.

The three players met with the Big Ten Network to discuss their new head coach. Piper talked about the new staff that was brought in last offseason.

I don’t like talking about the past. We always talk about learning from the past but preparing for the future. I can tell you what’s going on at Nebraska right now. Coach Rhule came here and brought a staff that believes in the players that were already here… that belief made us believe in ourselves even more.

Reimer talked about Matt Rhule’s attention to detail.

There’s a lot of structure with coach Rhule. He runs a tight ship. Not too bad mouth anything from the past. A lot of emphasis on structure, detail and unity.

Georgia Tech transfer Jeff Sims explained why he decided to come to Nebraska.

On my visit I was talking with Coach Rhule. Listening to the goals and vision for the future, it just aligned with what I wanted. I’ve heard the fanbase is nice and supportive. And I always wanted to be at a college that has fans like that and is in a college town. It was the right fit.

Nebraska will kick off the 2023 season on August 31 at Minnesota.

Oregon needs the Big Ten, but the Big Ten might need Oregon just as badly

A perfect outcome for Oregon is a seat at the table next to USC and UCLA. The Big Ten may need to jump on that while they have the leverage.

In the history of the United States, there have been war-time presidents and peace-time presidents; leaders who are aggressive and ready to take action to protect the future of the nation, and leaders who are good at negotiating and offering comfort to all of their constituents.

Rob Mullens, John Karl Scholz — which side do you more align yourselves with?

For the University of Oregon, it appears that things are moving from a nice decade of peace into a period of war that will leave many teams behind and feinding for themselves while others jump ship for cushy spots in new conferences.

By all means it appears that the Pac-12 is a sinking ship right now, and the remaining nine teams in the conference have to be looking for a landing spot should they choose to jump.

For the Ducks, a perfect dismount would see Oregon as the newest member of the Big Ten, following a path blazed by the USC Trojans and UCLA Bruins.

We know that the Ducks would desperately love to join that conference, but many think that the Big Ten might not want Oregon. Former commissioner Kevin Warren was interested in further expanding west, but new commissioner Tony Petitti has pumped the brakes.

I think that they not only should want the Ducks, but they may need them just as badly as Oregon needs the Big Ten. Let me explain.

Gary Danielson looks back at his history with Nebraska football

The Big Ten is entering a new era of broadcast deals.

The Big Ten is entering a new era of broadcast deals. This season will mark the first year of a seven-year broadcast deal between the conference and its broadcast partners, CBS, Fox, and NBC.

The deal is estimated to be worth a record $1.2 billion and will run through the 2029-30 season. CBS is also entering the final year of its SEC deal this season and will air seven Big Ten games in various windows before expanding to a full schedule starting in 2024.

Play-by-play man Brad Nessler and lead color analyst Gary Danielson will lead the network’s coverage. Danielson was at the start of Big Ten media days and discussed his history with Nebraska football.

The analyst told Kevin Sjuts, sports director of 1011 News out of Lincoln, about his first time in a broadcast booth for a college football game.

“My very first game when I got the job at ESPN was a Nebraska game. I’m in the office with Tom Osborne. I didn’t even know what I was doing there. I think the whole stature of Nebraska back in the day. When you went to the game, you felt the bigness of the stadium and how important it was to the community… college football is better when Nebraska is better.”

The network will also air the Big Ten Championship Game in 2024 and 2028. All CBS games will also be streamed on Paramount+.

Big Ten said it had no plans for further expansion … before the Colorado news

Does the possibility of Colorado to the #Big12 mean the #B1G (and other conferences) will expand?

Wednesday began innocently and normally enough.

Big Ten media days began in Indianapolis. Some moderately interesting things were said by the coaches and players. The Northwestern hazing scandal was a constant point of focus from assembled media members. Big Ten Commissioner Tony Petitti addressed a wide range of subjects, including the arrival of USC and UCLA in 2024 and the need to accommodate the Trojans and Bruins.

Petitti was also asked about possible Big Ten expansion. He said the only focus among conference leaders and athletic department administrators was to smooth the path for USC and UCLA. Additional expansion was not mentioned and not viewed as a priority for the Big Ten.

That was before the huge news broke Wednesday afternoon, linking Colorado to a move to the Big 12.

If Colorado does move to the Big 12, it opens the door for the Arizona schools to leave for the Big 12 as well. If the Arizona schools leave, the Pac-12 could cease to exist.

In that case, the Big Ten might have to expand — less by choice and more as a matter of necessity. It’s going to be another wild realignment summer before we start playing football in a month.

2023 Big Ten media days: How the media ranked the full Big Ten this year

.@WolverinesWire beat Purdue in last year’s #B1G football title game. What’s the predicted matchup this year?

The 2023 college football season marks the end of one era in the Big Ten. The era of divisional play in the conference will come to a conclusion at the Big Ten Championship Game in Indianapolis. This year’s conference championship showdown will be the last Big Ten title game between two division champions. Next year, in 2024, the Big Ten title game will feature the teams with the two best records in the conference. USC will be part of that world, so it’s worth passing along the results of the Big Ten football preseason media poll, as gathered by Wolverines Wire.

We have given you the votes for each separate division in 2023. Now let’s give you the full 1-14 Big Ten football rankings based on point totals:

2023 Big Ten media days: How the media ranked the Big Ten West Division

In the last year of divisional play in the #B1G, @TheBadgersWire is expected to win the West. See how this division stacks up.

The arrival of Big Ten media days in Indianapolis gives USC fans a chance to see what’s going on in their future home. Last summer, USC and UCLA made their “B1G” move on June 30. When Big Ten media days were held just weeks later, no one knew if Oregon and Washington would also join the Big Ten. Realignment dominated the conversation, to the extent that USC’s Big Ten identity was harder to pin down.

Now we have 2024 and 2025 Big Ten schedules which include USC. The Big Ten does not seem likely to continue to expand in the near future. USC in the Big Ten is beginning to feel more like home, but the Trojans do have to wait one more year.

At any rate, Big Ten media days certainly feel different for USC fans this year. Let’s look at the preseason Big Ten media poll for the Big Ten West Division, keeping in mind that divisions will not exist in 2024 when USC joins:

2023 Big Ten media days: How the media ranked the Big Ten East Division

Since #USC is moving to the #B1G-time next year, we’re following Big Ten media days in Indianapolis. There are polls to review.

USC fans have never been more interested in Big Ten media days than they are this year. Yes, they will be far more interested in Big Ten media days next year, when the Trojans officially join the conference and play a league schedule in the Midwestern United States, but this year is the lead-in to 2024.

Trojans Wire begins its coverage of Big Ten media days by looking at the preseason media poll for the conference.

Our friends at Wolverines Wire collected the information. Editor Isaiah Hole offered this note:

“The last time Michigan football was picked to win the Big Ten, it was 2019. However, it did not go so well for the Wolverines, who were trotting out an injured Shea Patterson at quarterback after he suffered a torn oblique on his first snap, and with a defense that was starting to lose its luster. The maize and blue are hoping not to repeat history.

“The history that the Wolverines are hoping to repeat is to win a third-straight Big Ten championship, which is what the media is predicting via the annual Cleveland.com poll.”

Here is the Big Ten East Division preseason media poll order of finish. It’s the last year in which the Big Ten will use divisions. None will exist when USC joins next year:
